💡Ant Keepers

Ant keepers are hobbyists or enthusiasts who cultivate and maintain ant colonies, often in artificial environments known as formicaria. In the video, the speaker addresses this community, acknowledging their passion for creating homes for ants and their interest in learning about homemade ant farms.

💡Formicaria

Formicaria refers to artificial ant nests or habitats, which are the main focus of the video. The term is used to describe the various homemade ant farms discussed, including those made from materials like cork, white Tong, and plaster.

💡Nuptial Flights

Nuptial flights are the mating events of ants, where winged ants leave the nest to mate and potentially start new colonies. The video mentions that many viewers in North America are in their anting season, which includes these nuptial flights, indicating the timing for catching new queen ants.

💡Cork Nest

A cork nest is one type of homemade formicarium mentioned in the video, created using sheets of cork. It is highlighted for its ability to maintain a moisture gradient, which is essential for the ants' comfort and health, as demonstrated by the example where the upper part of the nest is more moist than the lower part.

💡White Tongue

White Tongue, also known as autoclaved aerated concrete, is another material used for creating formicaria. It is noted for its water retentive properties, making it suitable for creating tunnels and chambers for ants to inhabit, as shown in the video script where it is used in both upright and flat nest designs.

💡Capillary Action

Capillary action is the process by which water moves up through narrow spaces against gravity, driven by surface tension. In the context of the video, it is used to describe how water is distributed within certain formicaria designs, ensuring the ants' environment remains hydrated without over-saturation.

💡Plaster Nest

A plaster nest is a type of formicarium made from plaster of Paris or a similar material. It is praised in the video for its water absorption and the ability to support colonies over time. However, it also comes with the risk of mold if not properly managed.

💡Natural Nest

A natural nest, as mentioned in the video, is an ant habitat that closely mimics the ants' natural environment. It often includes real soil and plants, allowing the ants to behave as they would in the wild. The video script describes a natural nest housing an Aphaenogaster queen as an example of this type of formicarium.

💡Moisture Gradient

A moisture gradient refers to a variation in humidity levels within the ant's habitat. The video emphasizes the importance of this gradient for the ants' well-being, allowing them to choose their preferred environment within the nest.

💡Test Tube Setups

Test tube setups are a method of housing ants, often used for starting new colonies or as temporary habitats. In the video, it is mentioned that some ants use test tubes as satellite nests, indicating their versatility and practicality in ant keeping.

💡Omn Nests

Omn nests are a specific product mentioned in the video, designed and engineered for ant keeping with practicality in mind. They are fully disassemblable and allow for a clear view of the ants' activities, making them a popular choice among ant keepers.

play00:00

hello everyone all of you ant lovers out

play00:02

there this is Mikey buos from ants

play00:04

Canada thank you guys for watching my

play00:06

videos and welcome to the ants Canada

play00:08

ant Channel where we talk about ants you

play00:11

know a lot of you guys have been writing

play00:13

in saying ah I've caught a queen you

play00:14

know all of you in North America are hot

play00:17

into your anting season you know the

play00:19

ants there are having nuptial flights

play00:22

and you guys are catching your ants and

play00:23

a lot of you guys are starting to get

play00:26

into the hobby um and I think that's

play00:28

great a lot of you are saying that my

play00:30

tutorials have helped you a lot um I

play00:32

think it's awesome so I thought it was

play00:34

time to create another ant tutorial to

play00:36

talk about homemade ant farms it's

play00:38

basically an alternative to purchasing

play00:40

fully built formicaria your own nests a

play00:43

lot of you who've been writing in to me

play00:45

are young kids and you know as young as

play00:48

12 who are watching my videos so hello

play00:51

out there thank you guys so much for

play00:52

watching um with your parents and thank

play00:54

you to your parents for supporting your

play00:56

ant love um and a lot of you are teens

play00:58

as well and your students and you know

play01:00

some of you guys don't have jobs so of

play01:03

course you can't afford any Nest that

play01:04

you buy online or anything like that so

play01:07

you need to essentially create it

play01:09

yourself um a lot of you guys out there

play01:11

are just as crafty and um you know

play01:15

resourceful as the ants that you care

play01:17

for a lot of you ant Keepers out there

play01:19

like to create you you want to create

play01:21

the homes um of your ants and that's

play01:24

kind of the fun part of being a ant

play01:28

keeper and an ant hobbyist you get to

play01:30

create the nests yourself um it's a very

play01:33

satisfying feeling so I totally get that

play01:35

so for those of you who need ideas in

play01:38

terms of how to create your own

play01:39

formicaria here are some great ideas

play01:42

pictures that you guys have sent into me

play01:44

of your homemade formicaria and of some

play01:46

that I found online all right the first

play01:48

one here is a photo that I found online

play01:50

of someone who is keeping it looks like

play01:53

campones or formica in a cork nest for

play01:56

those of you who have access to sheets

play01:58

of cork where crafty you can essentially

play02:01

have two layers of cork you have the

play02:03

back layer and then a second layer to

play02:06

create the walls for this cork Nest you

play02:08

can see that um this person has

play02:10

established a gradient where the upper

play02:13

part of the nest is more moist and the

play02:17

lower part in this picture is drier um

play02:20

and that's always good you don't want to

play02:21

soak an entire Nest you want to have

play02:23

some kind of moisture gradient there so

play02:24

the ants can choose uh where to go it

play02:27

looks to me like these two Cor sheets

play02:30

are screwed together the glasses placed

play02:32

on top uh sandwiching the cut cork sheet

play02:36

there I've seen nests like this before

play02:38

um I don't know how long it takes before

play02:41

a nest like this would rot um and

play02:44

perhaps mold but it looks to me like

play02:47

this Nest would last at least a year for

play02:50

me I would probably try to keep konus in

play02:53

a nest like this um carpenter ants

play02:56

because you know carpenter ants are wood

play02:58

loving but also so they appreciate drier

play03:02

nests you know so you don't really have

play03:05

to soak this cork Nest which might cause

play03:07

it to rot quicker so uh yeah it's a

play03:10

great idea if you have access to sheets

play03:12

of cork now if you look at this Nest

play03:15

this here is a big block of white Tong

play03:18

also known as autoclaved erated concrete

play03:21

and what it is is it's created in an

play03:23

autoclave pressurized while it while the

play03:26

cement hardens so that there are

play03:28

minuscule air bubbles in the cement

play03:30

which causes it to have um water

play03:33

retentive properties what that means is

play03:35

it's a brick that absorbs water those

play03:38

tunnels there are drilled using a drill

play03:40

bit or a Dremel and from my

play03:42

understanding it's pretty easy to drill

play03:45

tunnels into this brick it looks to me

play03:47

like this person has the white tongue

play03:50

block sitting in a a long pan Which I

play03:53

suppose is used to hold the water um and

play03:57

it's a all around a very beautiful and

play04:00

practical Nest uh I see a piece of glass

play04:03

uh fastened there uh onto the block I

play04:07

see that this person has used uh some

play04:09

silicone cocking uh to do that and uh

play04:14

yeah so they've chosen for this white

play04:16

Tong Nest to be an upright Nest you can

play04:18

also create a white tongue Nest that is

play04:21

flat uh for those of you North America

play04:24

finding white Tong in autoclaved irated

play04:26

concrete is kind of hard um to come

play04:30

across I know in Europe you guys there

play04:32

and in Australia have a lot of access to

play04:35

AC as they call it or white Tong or

play04:37

hebble brick it's got a lot of names um

play04:39

and you might it might be easier for you

play04:41

guys to find that the thing about white

play04:43

Tong is uh once the ants completely soil

play04:48

it it's kind of hard to clean I mean you

play04:50

can scrub it but because of all those

play04:52

little bubbles in there uh some of the

play04:54

waste gets trapped into those micro

play04:57

bubbles it's the nest kind of becomes

play04:59

becomes a big sponge for um microbes if

play05:02

you uh don't control moisture like for

play05:06

those of ants that are moisture loving

play05:08

there's a higher risk there of like

play05:10

bacteria overtaking the entire Nest now

play05:13

as I said before white Tong nests can be

play05:16

created to lie flat as in this picture

play05:19

uh which is from Roy UT from Netherlands

play05:23

um now he essentially has the white

play05:26

tongue flat and a glass placed on top

play05:28

and of course a tube which attaches to

play05:30

the outworld there on the right very

play05:32

neat design me personally I prefer nests

play05:35

that lay flat um only because you know

play05:39

you can I find the the view of the ants

play05:41

better The Brood sits on the floor and

play05:44

you know rarely will you see ants

play05:46

hanging from the ceiling um unless the

play05:49

room is really really packed so for me I

play05:52

prefer having flat nests and I like to

play05:55

kind of look from the top uh from a

play05:58

bird's eye view but that's all Personal

play06:00

Taste that's completely up to you now

play06:02

another thing you can do is uh you can

play06:04

do what Lawrence here from New York did

play06:08

which was attach a white Tong carved out

play06:11

Nest uh into the inside of an aquarium

play06:14

so what he did here was he took a white

play06:16

Tong block carved a nest and then stuck

play06:19

it to the side of an aquarium then

play06:21

filled the rest of the space with uh

play06:25

some sand and it looks like dry sand um

play06:29

now the way this works is if you keep

play06:31

the sand relatively dry the ants will

play06:34

choose not to burrow in it and they will

play06:37

make use of the white Tong brick now

play06:41

some people instead of using sand like

play06:43

to use um cement or grout and then that

play06:48

way the ants for sure don't dig into the

play06:50

medium that they're not supposed to um

play06:53

and you see here that he has a little

play06:55

opening for the ants to enter the white

play06:58

tongue nest

play07:00

uh some of you guys have sent in some

play07:02

really cool formicariums not made of AAC

play07:05

but made of actual cement if you look at

play07:07

this formicarium created by Art Perez

play07:10

from Anaheim California you can see that

play07:12

he created uh a formicarium piece which

play07:16

is made of cement and he siliconed that

play07:18

to the glass and then on top of that he

play07:21

filled all of that space with some more

play07:23

cement and then added decorations on the

play07:25

top while it dried that to me is a heavy

play07:28

Nest but he says he filled um the most

play07:31

of the space behind that big block of

play07:34

cement with um a filler I believe it was

play07:37

styrofoam so the whole aquarium isn't

play07:40

heavy uh this is a great design um and

play07:43

he says that the way he Waters The Nest

play07:45

is there's like a sort of water duct

play07:47

over there to the right you can see it

play07:49

it runs from top to bottom and water

play07:51

goes in there and essentially there's a

play07:53

space between the nest and the glass so

play07:57

water spreads through capillary re

play07:58

action through that that really tight

play08:00

space really kind of clever similarly

play08:03

here is Rox solar malite from

play08:05

Philippines he sent in this formicarium

play08:08

design um and it's really neat you can

play08:10

see the top of the earth portion he's

play08:14

even got a um man-made I it looks like a

play08:18

a puddle or a lake I think that's great

play08:20

I think it's very creative uh so he used

play08:23

here uh cement as well and he sprinkled

play08:27

some sand and gravel on the top while

play08:29

cement was drying and also added twigs

play08:33

and fake plants you can buy fake plants

play08:35

from anywhere for those of you in the US

play08:36

and Canada Dollarama has tons of great

play08:39

great fake plants um so you can look uh

play08:42

for that stuff there um and as for Twigs

play08:46

you can find lots of Twigs outside or

play08:48

wherever uh so he made his out outworld

play08:51

very attractive very nice um easy to

play08:54

make you got to remember though you

play08:55

don't want to make it too complex and

play08:57

too decorated because remember you got

play08:59

to clean this space when the ants leave

play09:01

their garbage and create cemeteries now

play09:05

if you look here these are his ants I

play09:07

believe he's keeping solenopsis geminata

play09:10

and they are loving this cement

play09:12

formicarium now I assume this

play09:14

formicarium is also hydrated by way of

play09:18

capillary action you know when you pour

play09:21

water into the outworld it eventually

play09:23

just kind of spreads throughout the

play09:25

entire formicarium uh between the many

play09:28

spaces uh between the glass and the

play09:30

formicarium all right so moving on now

play09:32

to entire units uh which contain

play09:35

formicarium and outworld in the same

play09:37

unit I saw this really neat picture um

play09:41

online it's essentially a plaster Nest

play09:45

inside a well an outworld and instead of

play09:48

the nest portion facing the glass The

play09:52

Nest actually faces the inside of the

play09:55

formicarium and this also creates a cool

play09:57

option um you can see here this person

play10:00

has decided to plant some plants there

play10:03

uh I see real soil a shallow layer of

play10:06

real soil there um and they've just

play10:09

stuck it there looks really really nice

play10:10

really attractive they've got a

play10:12

hygrometer there and thermometer there

play10:13

as well to monitor temperature and

play10:16

hydration really cool uh design and uh

play10:21

the thing is the thing I'm concerned

play10:23

about here though is if the ground is

play10:26

kept really moist then I imagine the

play10:29

plaster as well would be moist and might

play10:32

possibly rot faster um now it as a rule

play10:37

I say if you add uh a thin layer of soil

play10:41

you should keep it dry but I see real

play10:43

plants there so that's the problem you

play10:44

got to wet you got to water the plants I

play10:47

mean they plants they need water so the

play10:49

soil will be relatively wet which also

play10:53

means the ants might be encouraged to

play10:55

dig and move into that soil and create a

play10:57

nest nesting site there

play10:59

um and as well it also means that all of

play11:02

that moist soil will be touching the

play11:04

bottom of that plaster

play11:06

formicarium which causes a risk for mold

play11:10

outbreak but hey it looks like it's

play11:12

working I see some ants there um and

play11:15

they're really

play11:16

inhabiting uh that plaster nest and it

play11:18

doesn't look like they're digging into

play11:20

that moist soil so hey if it works it

play11:22

works great this is a kind of cute

play11:24

formicarium this photo was sent in from

play11:27

Stacy Watson from Bristol United Kingdom

play11:30

it's a 3inch nest made of plaster kind

play11:33

of neat so she has this small little

play11:35

container um and she uh created a

play11:39

plaster nest and when I say plaster this

play11:42

is plaster of Paris by the way um and I

play11:44

believe they also have this substance

play11:46

which is more Hardy called hydr

play11:48

Stone um and plaster of Paris is very

play11:50

easy to buy it's cheap you can get it

play11:52

from any arts and craft store um and

play11:55

essentially you just need uh some kind

play11:57

of cast and mold thing where you can use

play12:01

Play-Doh she used Play-Doh I guess to

play12:03

create a tunnel and then you pour that

play12:06

plaster into that container let it dry

play12:09

pull that mold out remove the um clay

play12:14

the Play-Doh and then you have that

play12:15

design and it looks like also she used

play12:18

um some brown dyes now in terms of dyes

play12:22

and that sort of thing in formicariums

play12:24

I'm kind of I I'm kind of chemical

play12:27

phobic when it comes to the living space

play12:29

of my Ants um even the silicone that I

play12:33

use for my formicariums and for creating

play12:36

your formicariums for those of you who

play12:38

have purchased um my formicariums in the

play12:41

past I always use uh aquarium safe

play12:44

silicone for those of you in Canada you

play12:46

can buy this in a Canadian Tire Home

play12:48

Depot it says safe for

play12:51

aquariums um and I believe you in the

play12:53

states as well have access to this uh

play12:56

it's just uh ants a lot of times

play12:59

depending on the species are very

play13:00

chemical sensitive so I'm just afraid of

play13:03

using dyes even though they might be

play13:05

organic dyes or whatever I just I prefer

play13:08

to keep things as raw I guess as

play13:10

possible but nevertheless this is a cute

play13:13

Nest uh for a starting Colony I think it

play13:16

would be great and if you could connect

play13:17

many of these it uh makes an attractive

play13:19

piece for for anyone all right here's

play13:22

another example of a plaster Nest from

play13:24

Casper and Sophie from Poland this time

play13:27

in a round container and it looks to me

play13:29

like they are keeping formica in this uh

play13:33

plaster Nest really cool again the thing

play13:36

with plaster is it's great it absorbs

play13:39

water well and has proven to raise

play13:41

colonies over decades now it's been an

play13:45

option for a lot of end Keepers for many

play13:47

many decades but it also can mold you

play13:52

know when there's food sitting around it

play13:54

molds and so it needs to be changed the

play13:57

great thing about plaster nests is it

play13:58

forces you to keep changing the nests

play14:01

eventually when the you know all the

play14:03

bacteria and mold builds up you're just

play14:05

forced to move the colony to a new Nest

play14:07

which is great uh I've talked about Nest

play14:09

cycling in previous videos which is very

play14:12

important you know ants live in soil and

play14:16

the soil is always moving it's always

play14:18

circulating ants are bringing soil from

play14:20

the bottom up and just creatures are

play14:22

moving the soil around so they're never

play14:25

in stag stagnant media whereas in a

play14:29

captive for merium the ants have to stay

play14:32

in the same stuff that you give them you

play14:35

know and it's it gets kind of gross so

play14:38

um for those of you with plaster nests

play14:41

it forces you guys to Nest cycle which

play14:44

in my books is great now this Nest is a

play14:47

really cool Nest from Josh Richards um

play14:50

and it's a wood Nest I rarely see these

play14:53

but when I saw this picture I thought it

play14:54

was kind of neat this Colony housed in

play14:56

this formicarium is a cylindro Merm and

play15:00

they live in Wood they live in tunnels

play15:03

that are created by termites so what

play15:06

this guy's done is he's created um well

play15:09

an

play15:10

artificial wooden termite eaten

play15:14

formicarium I guess uh it's it's really

play15:18

neat he's used tools to create tunnels

play15:21

and um Chambers and he's moved the

play15:24

colony in there and if you look at this

play15:27

picture to the upper left there are tiny

play15:29

termites in there and that's what he's

play15:31

feeding these ants and the Ants are

play15:32

doing really really well if you see

play15:34

there's you've got Pupi and larva and

play15:37

eggs and it's just a really cool thing

play15:40

um for those of you with camponotus I'm

play15:42

sure this would work um again to hydrate

play15:46

the nest I'm sure all you need to do is

play15:48

just wet one portion of the nest um and

play15:51

not too much so that it does so you know

play15:53

you keep it from rotting um but uh most

play15:56

campanadas prefer medium to to dry nests

play15:59

so this actually would work uh for you

play16:02

if you have kutus the only thing though

play16:06

is you would need to line the

play16:08

outside uh with some maybe metal or

play16:13

plastic or I don't know perhaps even

play16:16

silicone cocking something that

play16:17

carpenter ants cannot chew through

play16:19

because these ants that he's keeping in

play16:21

here don't chew through wood they they

play16:23

just inhabit the homes of um

play16:26

termites which are the wants to board

play16:29

the the tunnels and the chambers so yeah

play16:31

wooden nests really cool really

play16:33

neat now I really hope this is a joke

play16:37

but we received this photo from Louis

play16:40

Pimentel in South Africa saying that he

play16:42

brings his ants

play16:45

everywhere so uh I don't even see any

play16:48

rooms or Chambers it just looks like a

play16:49

container with ants in them but I

play16:51

figured I'd include it in this video

play16:53

just for some comic relief all right

play16:55

this setup is from Michael Stewarts uh

play16:58

and he he's keeping his laus Colony um

play17:01

in a formicarium that basically is his

play17:05

outworld along with several test tube

play17:07

setups and it seems to be working for

play17:09

him and uh for the species he says the

play17:12

ants are using the test tubes as

play17:13

satellite nests and several of the test

play17:16

tubes have brood and other things in

play17:19

there so it's uh it's great that this

play17:21

setup works too if you don't have a

play17:23

formicarum and finally my personal

play17:26

favorite the natural nest this photo is

play17:29

from Thomas um who posted in the uh an

play17:33

and micology group on Facebook it's a

play17:37

natural Nest which is housing a queen a

play17:39

meria queen from Australia uh really

play17:42

really neat he's opted to just provide

play17:46

the ant some digging medium a piece of

play17:49

cork bark and just allow the queen ant

play17:52

to do what she does in nature people are

play17:55

always looking for the most natural Nest

play17:58

this here here is the most natural Nest

play17:59

giving your ants the freedom to

play18:01

completely dig if they want to dig away

play18:04

from the glass which they probably will

play18:06

they have that Liberty to do that and

play18:08

you know some end Keepers don't want to

play18:10

see the action that goes on in the nest

play18:12

they're just completely happy with

play18:13

seeing the ants that emerge um above the

play18:17

nest when you have super super large

play18:20

colonies anyways it's all the same you

play18:22

just see ants Chambers with babies you

play18:25

rarely ever see the queen so you know

play18:27

you might as well make your ants happy

play18:29

and give them a natural Nest it's a

play18:31

great alternative in my opinion and the

play18:33

great thing about natural nests is you

play18:35

can actually plant real plants and make

play18:37

it look really really attractive um as a

play18:40

display piece say in a living room like

play18:42

look at this picture really really

play18:44

beautiful the great thing about a

play18:46

natural Nest is the ants also behave

play18:48

naturally in terms of garbage disposal

play18:51

you know some ants will just create

play18:53

rooms just for garbage and completely

play18:55

block off those rooms and it in turn

play18:58

causes you know microbiota in the soil

play19:01

to come and break down the waste uh

play19:04

naturally fungus bacteria all of that to

play19:06

just naturally break down the ants

play19:09

garbage you know and so you essentially

play19:13

don't have to worry about cleaning as

play19:15

much because the ants just have their

play19:17

own uh compost system going on there

play19:20

it's really cool all righty and there

play19:23

you have it those are examples of some

play19:25

nests that you guys have sent in to me

play19:27

um and I wanted to share it with

play19:29

everyone else for those of you who are

play19:31

looking for ideas for creating for

play19:33

marcaria um and I know a lot of you guys

play19:35

are beginners so um yeah be sure to

play19:38

review this video and choose a design

play19:41

that you think best suits you your

play19:43

tastes and best suits your ants

play19:45

especially uh and of course to eliminate

play19:47

any of that guess workor feel free to

play19:50

check out our website antscanada.com we

play19:52

have formicariums there for you guys uh

play19:55

for any species that you guys have

play19:57

except for some of the more specialized

play19:59

species like Leaf Cutters and Weaver

play20:01

ends and if you do check out our site

play20:03

please do check out our Flagship for

play20:05

Marium the omn nests which just released

play20:08

in November last year you know it's a

play20:10

fairly new product but more and more

play20:12

people all over the world are ordering

play20:14

them and discovering just how great they

play20:16

are for keeping ants we had designed

play20:17

them and engineered these for marcaria

play20:20

uh with ant keeping practicality in mind

play20:23

they're fully disassemblable they can be

play20:25

cleaned they can be rearranged and you

play20:27

see everything absolutely all things

play20:30

that are happening in the nest it's a

play20:31

really really cool concept the response

play20:34

we've been getting from the mail just

play20:35

from people sending in photos of their

play20:38

ants uh in our omn nests it uh just has

play20:41

been fantastic a great response and

play20:44

definitely our number one selling for

play20:46

Marium so if you can save up or ask your

play20:49

parents uh to get you something for your

play20:51

birthday or for Christmas or anything

play20:53

like that be sure to pick up an omn Nest

play20:56

I promise you guys will love it anyways

play20:58

this video has gotten so long now thank

play21:00

you guys for watching my videos be sure

play21:02

to subscribe um and go go catch those

play21:05

queens and experiment there's only one

play21:09

way to learn about these ants and that's

play21:11

trying new things experimenting and

play21:12

learning from others who have kept ants

play21:15

thank you guys for watching my videos

play21:17

take care until next time

play21:21

[Applause]

play21:27

bye
