Two Monkeys Were Paid Unequally: Excerpt from Frans de Waal's TED Talk
Summary
TLDRIn a renowned fairness study conducted with capuchin monkeys, researchers observed the animals' reactions to receiving different rewards for the same task. Monkeys were content with cucumber slices but displayed dissatisfaction when their partner received preferred grapes, indicating a sense of inequity. This experiment, which has been replicated with other species, highlights the complex social and emotional responses to fairness, even in non-human primates.

Q & A
What is the main focus of the experiment mentioned in the transcript?
-The main focus of the experiment is to study the concept of fairness in animals, specifically capuchin monkeys, by observing their reactions to receiving different rewards for the same task.
Why did the researchers choose capuchin monkeys for the initial experiment?
-Capuchin monkeys were chosen because they live in groups and are known to have a social structure that allows for the study of fairness and inequity among individuals.
What is the simple task that the monkeys are required to perform in the experiment?
-The simple task involves giving a rock to the researchers, after which they are rewarded with food.
What food items were used in the experiment and why?
-Cucumbers and grapes were used as rewards. Cucumbers were considered a baseline reward, while grapes were preferred by the monkeys and thus created a sense of inequity when compared to the less desirable cucumbers.
How did the monkeys react when both were given cucumbers for the task?
-When both monkeys were given cucumbers, they were perfectly willing to perform the task, indicating that they did not perceive any inequity in this scenario.
What happened when one monkey was given grapes while the other received cucumbers?
-The monkey receiving cucumbers became upset and refused to continue the task, demonstrating a sense of inequity and dissatisfaction with the unequal rewards.
How did the researchers ensure that the new monkeys in the recent experiment had not been influenced by previous trials?
-The researchers used new monkeys who had never done the task before to ensure that their reactions were not influenced by prior experiences or observations.
What was the reaction of the monkey receiving cucumbers when it saw the other monkey getting grapes?
-The monkey receiving cucumbers showed clear signs of discontent, refusing to continue the task and even throwing the cucumber back at the researchers.
How does the transcript suggest that the food preferences of the capuchin monkeys correspond to human perceptions of value?
-The transcript implies that the monkeys' preference for grapes over cucumbers mirrors the higher value placed on grapes in supermarkets, suggesting a parallel between monkey preferences and human valuation of food.
What broader implications does this experiment have for understanding animal cognition and social behavior?
-The experiment suggests that animals like capuchin monkeys have a sense of fairness and can recognize inequity, which provides insights into their cognitive abilities and social dynamics.
Why does the transcript refer to the monkey's reaction as a 'Wall Street protest'?
-The term 'Wall Street protest' is used metaphorically to describe the monkey's refusal to accept the unfair treatment, similar to how protesters might demonstrate against perceived injustices in the financial sector.
Outlines
đ Inequity and Fairness Study with Capuchin Monkeys
This paragraph introduces a renowned fairness study conducted with capuchin monkeys, which has since been replicated with other species. The experiment involves two monkeys performing a simple task and receiving food rewards. Initially, both monkeys are content with receiving cucumber, but when one monkey receives grapes, which are preferred and considered a better reward, it creates a sense of inequity. The study highlights the monkeys' awareness of fairness and their reactions to inequitable treatment. The video script describes a recent iteration of the experiment with new monkeys, where the one receiving cucumber reacts negatively upon seeing its partner receive grapes, which is a more desirable reward.

Highlights
A renowned fairness study with capuchin monkeys was conducted.
The study has been replicated with various animals, including dogs, birds, and chimpanzees.
Capuchin monkeys were used in the initial experiment.
Monkeys were tested in pairs, taken from their group and placed in a test chamber.
A simple task was assigned to the monkeys, involving food rewards.
Cucumber was given as a reward, which was accepted by the monkeys.
Grape was introduced as a superior food reward, creating inequity.
Monkeys showed a preference for grapes, reflecting their natural food preferences and market prices.
A recent experiment with new monkeys was videotaped to observe their reactions.
The monkey receiving cucumber initially accepted it but later showed dissatisfaction.
The monkey's dissatisfaction was evident when it saw its partner receiving grapes.
The cucumber-receiving monkey rejected the task by throwing the cucumber back.
The experiment demonstrated the monkeys' awareness of inequity and their response to it.

Transcripts
so a final experiment that I want to
mention to you is our fairness study and
so this this became a very famous study
and there's now many more because after
we did this about 10 years ago uh it
became very well known and we did that
originally with capuchin monkeys and I'm
going to show you the first experiment
that we did it has now been done with
dogs and with birds and with chimpanzees
umizara Blossom we started out with
capuchin monkeys
so what we did is we put two capuchin
monkeys side by side again these animals
they live in a group they know each
other we take them out of the group put
them in a test chamber and there's a
very simple task that they need to do
and if you give both of them cucumber
for the task the two monkeys side by
side they're perfectly willing to do
this 25 times in a row so cucumber even
though it's really only water in my
opinion but cucumber is perfectly fine
for them now if you give the partner
grapes the food preferences of my
capuchin monkeys correspond exactly with
the prices in the supermarket and so if
you give them grapes it's a far better
food than you create inequity between
them
so that's the experiment we did recently
we videotaped it with new monkeys who
had never done the task is thinking that
maybe they would have a stronger
reaction and that turned out to be right
the one on the left is a monkey who gets
cucumber the one on the right is the one
who gets scrapes the one who gets
cucumber note that the first piece of
cucumber is perfectly fine the first
piece he eats
and then she sees the other one getting
grape and you will see what happens
so she gives a rock to us that's the
task and we give her a piece of cucumber
and she eats it the other one needs to
give a rock to us
and that's what she does
and she gets a grape
and she said the other one sees that
she gives a rock to verse now gets again
cucumber
she tests her Rock now against the wall
she needs to give it to us
and she gets cucumber again
so this is basically the Wall Street
protest that you see here
