You Are Your Own Limit | Minh Tran | TEDxWellspring Saigon School Youth
Summary
TLDRThe speaker uses the metaphor of coffee cups to illustrate the concept of dreams and mindset. They tell a story about a boy who fills a cup with coffee beans as a symbol of his efforts towards his dream. Outlines
📊 Understanding Dreams Through Numbers and Coffee Cups
The speaker introduces the topic by connecting numbers to dreams, using a story of a boy filling a cup with coffee beans. This metaphor illustrates the boy's obsession with fulfilling his dream, symbolized by filling the cup, and the realization that he can simply get another cup instead of being fixated on the first one. This segues into a discussion about coffee cup sizes representing different dream sizes, emphasizing that people's dreams and efforts vary just like coffee cups.
☕ Starbucks and the Essence of Effort in Dreams
The narrative shifts to the story of Starbucks' growth from a small company to a global brand. The speaker highlights the importance of taking risks and putting in effort to achieve dreams, using the example of Starbucks' expansion. He stresses that people often focus on the size of their dreams (or coffee cups) rather than the quality of their efforts (or coffee). The message is to prioritize the quality of one's work over the perceived size of the dream, as an empty cup, regardless of its size, remains worthless without effort put into it.
🎉 Applause and Conclusion
The video concludes with applause, signaling the end of the presentation. The final message encourages listeners to take control of their dreams and efforts, likening themselves to baristas who can create any kind of coffee they desire, symbolizing the power to shape their own dreams and futures.

Transcripts
and today I have a very interesting
topic to talk with all of you
numbers take zero + 4 you get four
double it you get eight plus two you get
10 plus two again you get 12 16 and 20
now you might be wondering what does
number has to do with
dreams well before we dive into that let
me tell you a little story so there's
this
boy and he has a cup not a big one not a
small one just a cup and he dreams to
fill it up how you may ask well for
every task or choice that he's done he's
going to put in one little tiny e easy
coffee bean in it and after days he's
finally filled it up so F to a point
that you couldn't even put a pinch of
sugar in it anymore and now he faces a
challenge how do I put in one more
coffee bean how do I do
this and he fingures out whole sort of
way to fill it just one more bean and
you see people this is the problem the
problem lies in his mindset he is so
focused on fulfilling that dream that he
forgot he could just get another
cup and coming back back to the number
they are actually sizes of coffee cup
and now another question pops up in your
head okay cool now why does coffee cup
relate to
dreams well you see coffee cup
represents something more than just
coffee
cup because since this is the sizes of
coffee cup gu what also have sizes dream
big dream small dream or medium
dream and there are billions of people
in this world there are billions of
dream there are multi-billion dollars
company who sells coffee every day and
the amount of coffee cup compared to
dream they are so
similar so what does Big Dreams has to
do with coffee cup well let's take my
friend Joe over there for example this
is his dream and that cup represent his
dream and this little dot over here
represent the work that he's going to
put in it and after years of walking he
one day he looks into a cup and he told
tell me that why there's nothing in it
what is empty is void and I told him
that because you did practically
nothing and then when he heard that he
start blaming everything he start
blaming the community he sto blaming the
society he sto blaming me because I
wasn't a good friend huh and he stopped
blaming his environment because he
didn't get to go to
Harvard and surprisingly enough when ask
him what are you waiting for why are you
not putting in work and he said to me
I'm waiting for the moment and I say
what moment are you waiting for the sky
to rain to fill up your cup
huh and even if the rain is going to
fill up his cup it's still water I ask
for a cup of coffee not a cup of rain
water and why do people work so little
despite their huge cup of coffee it's
because the fear of failure the fear of
taking
risk people doesn't understand that to
win you must fail first because failing
is like the momentum of the Swing when
you push it back it pulls you up front
again that's just how gravity work
that's how life
work and let me ask you a
question what do you think makes a great
cup of coffee is it the ingredient is it
the milk is it the ice is it the cup is
it the brand it could be anything all
those premium ingredient are like big
dreams they make your coffee cup taste
better they make your life better they
make everything better even you
and you are the one in control of these
ingredient you are the one who's
controlling what to put in your cup
you're the one who's controlling what to
put in that
cup and the fact that most people they
often overlook this they only look at
how long do I have to F this cup how how
do i f the scup they don't look at the
actual progress they are so focused on
feeling the big cup filling the small
cup filling the medium cup they forgot
about the quality of the coffee that
they have to
fill
and that people I want to tell you
something Starbuck speaking of which
wasn't always this multi-billion dollar
company this man right here is how SCS
he is the one who made Starbuck that
Starbuck we know today because when they
started it was a small company it didn't
have that thousand of coffee store all
over the
world and when this man stepped into the
company he saw the potential the chances
the possibility of everything
possible and he try to make it bigger he
took all the risk possible to think of
the economy and the environment the
stock market everything and he took the
risk to make Starbuck the company
company we know
today and even if I state that example
people are still not going to understand
they are still going to focus on how
small their cup is how big their cup is
how they going to f it they will never
pay attention to the
coffee well now I'm here so I'm telling
you that forget all that cup you just
need to have a cup forget the big cup
forget the small cup forget the medium
cup just have a cup
because no matter how big the cup is
it's going to be just a empty cup if you
put nothing in it no matter how big the
cup is it's still going to be worthless
without any coffee in it your cup can be
a toilet your cup can be a d i I don't
care as long as as long as you're
willing to put coffee into it it's all
that matter as long as you are going to
put work into your dream the all that
matters
and those mistake those spill spills in
life those failure stop being afraid of
them because failure and success is like
an espresso cup espresso cup give you
that energy energetic to in your heart
motivate you to work more more more and
harder and there's also that bitterness
that goes with the energy there's also
failure that goes with
success and even if you fail at least
you did something to fail even if you
spill your coffee at least you made your
own coffee and then it spilled again and
now imagine that you are the one who's
controlling your own cup are you going
to let it spill all over the place and
then sit there complaining oh no I
tripped oh no I fell oh are you going to
pick that cup up and then redo
everything
because you are your own
Barista you are the one who's in control
of your own coffee cup are you going to
let the society decide your cup are you
going to let them give your mission and
then you have to do it obeying like a
robot no you are not a robot you are not
a coffee bean you are not a cup you are
a human you can change you can grow you
can adapt to be better
you are your own Barista making your own
coffee you can choose what type of
coffee are you having you can be you can
make an espresso you can make a
cappuccino you can make anything you can
mix all the type of coffee together and
call it a day just like how your dream
is you can choose how big it can be you
can choose how small it can be Society
will challenge you but it's all on to
you that are you going to accept that
challenge are you going to fail that
challenge are you going to fail
yourself now listen to me even if you're
losing for Society at least you're still
winning for
yourself
so because you're the one who is in
control of your dream choose whatever
you want to choose your duck can be just
as ridiculous as the kindergarten your
coffee bean can be the best of the best
you can not make a coffee but at least
make something to F in that cup but make
sure that every single drop in going in
that cup is the best of the best that
you can
offer because you only live once so make
that worth
it and so what kind of coffee are you
bringing in life right now is it an
latte is it an espresso it could be
anything as long as a good coffee and
remember this you are your own bar sir
you are the one who's making your own
coffee thank you for listening
[Applause]
