Models as an essential part of RPBW work by Joost Moolhuijzen
Summary
TLDRThe video script discusses the architectural design process, emphasizing the importance of opening a building to the west to allow everyone to enjoy the views. It highlights the idea of creating a single, unified floor where people can work together and share the same experience. The script also underscores the significance of models in design work, explaining that they offer a tangible way to understand scale, texture, and concept. It mentions the iterative and interactive nature of the design process, involving models, drawings, and technical sketches, allowing for flexibility and conceptual exploration.

- đ Small models focus on proportion and volume, while larger models emphasize movement and the flow of people within the space.
- đ The design team uses models and drawings to convey different messages, avoiding information overload by focusing each model on a single concept.
- đ ïž Technical drawings are developed alongside conceptual models, allowing for a balance between technical precision and creative exploration.
- đ The design process allows for returning to the basics if the team feels they are on the wrong track, ensuring the project remains true to its core vision.
- đš Music and applause are used to punctuate the narrative, adding a dynamic and engaging element to the presentation of the project.
Q & A
What was the initial concept for the building design in the project?
-The initial concept was to open the building to the west, creating an open arm that allowed everyone to look out towards the west.
How did the design team address the issue of collaboration among people working in different wings of the building?
-The team decided to design one big floor where people could work together, instead of having separate wings where people felt disconnected despite having views.
Why is it important to have a clear message in the building design according to the transcript?
-A clear message in the design helps to ensure that the building serves its intended purpose effectively, such as promoting collaboration and shared enjoyment of views.
What role do models play in the design process as described in the transcript?
-Models are essential as they allow people to physically interact with the design, providing a sense of scale, texture, and a direct way to capture the idea that 3D images or flat drawings cannot replicate.
Why is it recommended to use different models to convey different messages in the design process?
-Using different models for different messages prevents information overload and allows for a clearer and more focused communication of each aspect of the design.
What is the significance of creating small models in the design process?
-Small models are significant for understanding proportion and volume, providing a tangible sense of the design's size and shape.
What purpose do larger models serve in the design process?
-Larger models are used to explore movement, people's interaction with the space, and transportation within the design, offering a more dynamic perspective.
How do models and drawings complement each other in the design process?
-Models and drawings are created simultaneously, with each informing the other. This iterative process allows for refinement and ensures that the design remains conceptual and adaptable.
What does the transcript suggest about the nature of the design process?
-The transcript suggests that the design process is not linear but interactive, with constant feedback and adjustments between models, drawings, and conceptual thinking.
Why might a design team revert to conceptual models during the design process?
-A design team might revert to conceptual models if they feel they are on the wrong track, allowing them to go back to basics and reassess the fundamental ideas of the project.
How does the design team ensure that the building's orientation maximizes the enjoyment of the views?
-The design team ensures that the building is oriented to the west and that the layout allows all occupants to enjoy the views of the gardens, promoting a shared experience.
Outlines
đą Architectural Vision and Model Making
The speaker discusses the initial concept of a building project aimed at embracing the western view, allowing everyone to look out to the west. The idea evolved to create a unified floor where people work together, sharing the same views of the 'Imperial Gardens.' The importance of models in architectural work is highlighted, as they provide a tangible and interactive way to understand scale, texture, and concept. The speaker emphasizes the non-linear process of design, involving a dynamic interaction between models, drawings, and conceptualization.

The core idea was to have a building with open arms to the west.
The gardens are referred to as 'Imperial Gardens', indicating a significant design feature.
A revelation occurred with a model showing a different building orientation, leading to a change in design.
The design evolved to have one big floor where people work together, rather than separate wings.
The design emphasizes shared views of the gardens for all occupants.
Models are considered an essential part of the design process, providing a tangible sense of scale and texture.
3D images are not as effective as physical models for capturing the full idea.
Different models are used to convey different messages in the design process.
Small models focus on proportion and volume, while larger models emphasize movement and transportation.
Models and drawings are created simultaneously to explore different aspects of the design.
Technical drawings are developed alongside conceptual models to refine the design.

well we started the project the first
idea was to open the building to the
West like
this like open arm so that basically
everybody could look out to the west and
then we had our core back so here's the
West the gardens are here emperial
Gardens because we did a lot of other
other models uh different ones and we
had one where we actually had shown a
building more like
this and here that's was actually a
revelation because instead of having the
people sitting in this wing and this
Wing they don't feel working together
yes they have the views but they're not
sharing the same we said no we should do
it like this builds
one
big floor where people work together we
repeat them and then we
have the services all back but everybody
is here at the same
place and they all enjoy the same views
to the to the gardens and that is a very
stor clear

the models are essential part of our
work you can have uh 3D images but in
the end it's still
flat
it's never comparable with a real model
people can touch they can turn they can
look they can sense the scale they sense
texture they have that
direct capacity of capturing the
idea if you try to tell the whole story
with one model it becomes too much
information so it's nicer to capture one
message with one type of model and then
you can another message with another
type of
model so the small models is about
proportion
volume and then there's the bigger model
it's about movement it's about people
movement it's about
transportation we do models and drawings
simultaneously we do the models then we
draw then we start doing more technical
drawings but and we still can do
conceptual models if we feel we're on
the wrong track so you go back to the
basics in the
sense it's not a linear process that you
do a drawing then a model uh no it's
it's not at all like
that it's more
