hello and welcome to France May 4's
weekly music show I'm marre hash and I'm
delighted to welcome acclaimed Israeli
American violinist guy Brownstein who
not only developed a solo chamber music
career but also officiates as the Berlin
philarmonic orchestra concert Master now
always up for a musical challenge guy
has decided to revisit the work of The
Beatles
[Music]
[Applause]
in the past he's tackled the white
album's Blackbird but it's the Abby Road
concertive that he's just has on offer
in his new uh record gu thank you so
much for joining us in the uh France May
4 studios with big pleasure now it's
great to have you and I'm really excited
to talk about this because obviously as
a classical musician you're no stranger
to revisiting The Works of uh past uh
musicians and um groups and but I was
wondering how did this one go from Bak
for example to The Beatles is there a
difference I I I I don't know either I I
I remember watching an interview by Paul
McCartney mhm where a taxi driver told
him that's Mozart that's the high artist
not for you oh and he said okay I mean
and and he he said he never really
noticed the difference and and neither
neither did I for me there is there are
only two generes of music good music and
bad music that's it and the Beatles and
and uh um and Ste you wonder they belong
there with with bethoven or or or WC or
or Bak or whatever some of the great
yeah I mean this I I just for me it's on
one it's all one world and and I just
try to to go fishing for the for the
best part of it and I I read that what
drove you to this was your your your son
kind of going through his first Beetle
Mania phase tell us a bit more about
that yeah no I mean he one day he comes
home and and and he saw
John lenon High School for the art or
something on in Berlin on the way and he
asked me Papa who is who who is John
lenon MH so make a long story short I
explained to him I showed him some some
some clips John lenon The Beatles
whatever what a terrible mistake um that
was a severe B Mania only be at home we
were talking belittles hearing belittles
um breathing beetles and you never got
sick of The Beatles
uh look I mean I mean for me it was the
Revival of an old Story I mean I grew up
with the whittles but uh but
um he would every time I would pick up
my violin and practice my BTO violin
cono for for the coming tour he was
saying stop this crap play Beetles for
me so so so he would just shoot names of
songs and I would do my best uh and how
old is he he's now 11 but but then he
was then he was six mhm uh you know you
know exactly the age that you you
capture something and you just don't let
go yeah and and and so I I I started as
a joke you know taking some Beetle songs
and and making a solo violin like jokes
or or or anchors out of it
MH then came the uh covid-19 pandemic
and uh had plenty of free time uhuh and
I said let's find one of the late Beetle
songs and and do it with piano yeah so I
played some some of the last albums and
I remember one evening I decided today
I'm listening to ABI Ro the whole album
yeah and and I said oh I like them
all oh well how about we take a little
listen to to one of the tracks this is O
darling from the ABY Road conto
[Music]
oh taken from the ABY Road concerto now
guy can you imagine Ringo and Paul
McCartney listening to this or have they
listened to this and reacted uh I I have
not
I had no way of making contact with
either either of them um I don't know
them I think somebody should tell them
that they composed the violin conto it's
time for them to know that how hard was
it for you to to rearrange this because
the beauty of the The Beatles is the
Simplicity sometimes of their their
Melodies so how hard was it for you to
re adapt would did that come just so
naturally well
um it just it just comes without without
thinking about it mhm it's as as as pure
thing that that goes from your inside to
the outside and
backwards it's as simple as it as it
gets mhm of course of course writing
this is is a very complicated issue why
um because I I I didn't like to make
this kind of uh Wiggy Waggy uh crossover
violinist like you know there are many
like that I wanted to to to Really take
uh the the the color and the original
nature of of this music and and and and
interpret them as a totally classical
work oh well you seem to have done that
very successfully I think uh I had a
question as well because I don't know if
you've noticed there's a lot of period
drama coming on um streaming platforms I
think of bitin where they revisit you
know with classical uh instruments um
pop songs of today I don't know if
you've watched that series what do you
what do you think you know it could be
like hip hops Usher or Beyonce Revisited
that
look I I listen to all kinds of music
and and whenever something uh catches me
and uh and and uh teases me
to to try to redo this using the my
violin or or a symphony orchestra I do
of course not not every type of music is
suitable for for a classical o for a
classical violin like for example you
know I was when I was growing up I was
crazy about lead Zeppelin mhm m i until
today I adore their music but there is
not much I can do with a violin or a
symphony
orchestra uh this is just another animal
huh yeah and who would you like to
revisit you know you've done a bit of
The Beetles already um but is there
anyone else that you're you're curious
to to look
at uh I think I I was born very curious
and and I'm going to die very curious
uhuh and and uh uh I can I I I do a lot
of a lot of uh
um arrangements and and
adjustments um for a lot of pop music
but a lot of also classical music you
know I play I play uh I play
uchini or Dak or chaikovsky operas and
Aras that I conducted yes and found
myself jealous jealous at the singer so
I adopted that so why not do it with you
know I'm just next week I'm going to
play a couple of Billy Joel songs and
piano well I love the variety and the
fact that you're able to bridge all
different jars that's great it shows
it's very good musicianship uh we're
going to look up some new uh releases
maybe there's some that you might be
interested in covering or revisiting
yourself um yeah so we're challenge me
so we're going to start off uh with uh
someone who's just released an album
It's the Return of Bon Joi the 80s band
with beautiful hair are back with their
14th studio album entitled forever
featuring this track it's called
legendary
Frid night com around like a song
Sweet we all sing along about our Girl
She Believes In
Me
[Music]
legendary and singer bon John bonjovi is
unsure whether his vocal cords are
currently able to handle Stadium tours
like he used to uh that if you're not a
fan so if you're not a fan of bie do
note that there are there's a
documentary entitled thank you and good
night that's available on hululu or
Disney plus now guy um Boni are famous
for their track Living on a Prayer is
that one that you could imagine
doing I was considering but I I just
don't think it would be interesting
enough uh interesting enough for for for
what I would be able to to pronounce uh
using the tools that I have yeah um so
we'll see what about man CH who's our
next next right so he's a French artist
who has just dropped a new song it's his
first in 17 years Manu cha Rose to Fame
in the 1980s with his band L Manu
and garnered a huge International
following as a solo artist thanks to
songs like King of The Bongo and migas
to his new song is an OE to love and
solidarity it's called vivu let's take a
look at the video
[Music]
so this one a bit more complicated or
more enticing no I think I think uh uh
it's it's kind of it could be a
challenge it could be a challenge you
know I think it's doable I think it's
doable well yeah another and while we
wait for Manu Chow's next album please
note he'll be touring small festivals uh
around Europe which highlights the fact
that he still much prefers humaniz
events you've got a lot of tourists
coming up especially in the Autumn I
think you're going to China you've got
Europe so uh that's a good chance to
catch you with your ABY Road conto right
yeah uh going to China going to America
going all over Europe uh I'm going
to do the first first edition of ABI
Road in in the UK oh wow that's pressure
yeah with the uh city of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra mhm no that's not
pressure oh no pressure that's not
pressure you recorded in ABY Road as
well this ABY road concer which is quite
something to we pointed out but I'm
afraid that's all we've got time for
because the news Bolton is coming up in
just a few minutes guy thank you so much
for coming on the show to tell us about
I see you next time yes absolutely I'm
not done with you 100% still Lov more to
talk about and remember to check out his
fantastic Abby Road concerto the latest
France 34 News is coming up as as I was
saying and to wrap up the show we've got
Eminem's latest music video which
dropped at the weekend Houdini is one of
the first tracks taken from his upand
cominging album the death of Slim Shady
and he's in battle with his white trash
Ultra ego of his early days with
parodies of previous videos and
featuring Dr Dre and 50
[Music]
Cent I'm about to reach in my back BR
like Abra Abra Cabra
and for my last just like inra
