Have you ever lived the experience of time beginning to flow differently?
Have you ever lived the experience of time beginning to flow differently?
Noticing the completely open space.
Noticing the fully present body.
Noticing life, completely real.
Noticing that something extraordinary is happening.
A moment to let go.
A moment of total dedication.
A moment of full presence.
A moment of full presence.
Noticing the senses in a new gradient.
Noticing the smile drawing your gesture.
Noticing intuition clearing your mind.
Noticing that you are alive, happy, and awake.
This is mindfulness;
the art of living consciously.
And this poetry was what I felt when we had the visit
from Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of this clinic,
where I studied 11 years ago.
And he came to Barcelona.
And he came to visit us.
And we were lucky to have his company for a while
and inaugurate our space.
For me it was a great moment, and then I sat down and tried to pick up
a little of what he had felt.
Although I was also giving account then.
Jon Kabat-Zinn has the gift of having been taught
a monastic and traditional discipline, as Buddhist meditation is,
which was born to alleviate human suffering,
and had practiced it in a hospital,
because in hospitals is where people suffer.
And he offered this resource to those people that medicine
could not solve their problem.
People with chronic diseases or chronic conditions,
the diseases that had to do with the mind and body,
and gave rise to a new discipline, what is now called mind-body medicine,
which has to do with aspects of the mind which affect the body,
aspects of the body which affect the mind, and how it has to do with behavior.
Thanks to this innovative effort of 30 years ago,
now we have enough scientific evidence,
which explains how to direct the attention,
consciousness, and meditation having effects in different areas.
The most known is the field of well-being.
When people are aware, we take more care;
we pay attention and that affects health.
We take care of health, reduce stress, and we want a little more.
And that also has a positive effect at work, doesn't it?
When a person is well, he does his job better.
So what we have seen is that this development of consciousness
allows the improvement of the attention, concentration, and reduction of errors.
There is another benefit that has to do with personal relationships.
When someone is well, and does his tasks well,
then his relationships with others is better.
It decreases the aggressiveness, improves empathy,
And that combination facilitates collaborative relationships.
Something that, as we have seen before, is innate to humans.
So this triad is very powerful.
And it deals with how being aware, we can improve personal well-being,
have better quality at work, and improve relationships.
And I'm going to give you an example of each of these areas.
Personal well-being often is affected by trends
that we have in the mind of going back to negative things.
In psychology it is called rumination.
And it is an obsessive thought, which causes discomfort.
These thoughts can be reduced with the practice of consciousness,
because one begins to be aware of those thoughts
and he is reducing them
and here we have a chart of research we did in 2010
where in an eight-week program of mindfulness,
the associated discomfort was reduced with rumination
and lasted during the follow up.
We also saw improvement in the management of emotions.
This is more research which we did later in 2014,
here in Barcelona, with primary care physicians,
and we saw that the emotional disturbance the doctors had dealing with the patients
could be reduced with an eight-week workout of mindfulness
and that diminished in three dimensions:
in the tendency to anxiety, to depression, and hostility,
which are the negative emotions that were associated with their work.
And improved activity and decreased fatigue.
And that's what we all want;
how can we have more activity and be less tired,
if we decrease the amount of energy
that we dedicate to managing the emotional alteration?
And the third example has to do
with how we can improve the relationships
with others and make better decisions.
And we can articulate that with an array,
in which we observe the internal environment
in two dimensions.
There is a dimension that has to do
with the degree of energy a person has at any given time
and there is another dimension that has to do with the fact
that the moment is pleasant or unpleasant.
And to give some examples that can orientate us
we have a moment of relaxation when there is little energy
and it is nice or we call it excitement when there is pleasant energy.
When there is energy and it is unpleasant you can have a moment of anxiety,
or it may be a moment of frustration or anger.
And when we have a moment of a little unpleasant energy,
then we call it boredom.
This would be a bit the periphery of this map of feelings,
but the most interesting thing is in the center,
because there is an optimal zone that is not exactly the center -
I have put it a little as I have it for me,
but each one has to know how to identify it.
And in that area is where we take the best decisions,
in that area is where we listen better to our children,
where we have a better relationship as a couple,
where we can operate in a team,
where it unfolds the best version of yourself.
Not too excited, not too relaxed,
not too bored, not too anxious and angry.
Then, the key is to first give yourself
the account of where the internal medium is,
and resources to be able to recover the area when there are events
or situations in life of one that get you out of that area.
And a great resource for it is the practice of mindfulness.
Mindfulness - perhaps some know the English word,
because it's a word which is normally used.
But I like it more as it is expressed in Chinese
which has to do with two ideas:
The idea of presence and the idea of heart.
Heart as the affective part of the mind.
In Chinese they would say that mindfulness -
full consciousness in Castilian -
is when a person is present from the heart,
is living 100% in the moment.
And that's easy to say, but it requires a little training.
And training has three skills that we have to try.
The first has to do with having an intention.
The human brain has a tendency to disperse,
to go from one idea to the other easily.
With it we have to cultivate an intention that has to be more present,
of being more connected with what happens in reality,
moment by moment.
Do not let too much travel into issues of the future and the past.
The second has to do with cultivating an attitude of kindness to life,
and kindness to oneself.
Many times we face reality and we believe
that by struggling with reality, it can be changed.
Actually the things that happen are already happening
and it is easier to adapt to what is, and, in that way, establish a relationship
that allows us maybe change the things of the future.
So we have the component of intention and kindness,
and then comes the most important which is to connect with experience.
The experience in the body and the experience of being present.
Actually what helps us to be present is to remember the body and feel the body.
And that is much easier with practice.
So if you think it too, we're going to now do a little practice.
I'm not going to project anything, so I invite you to imagine,
and close your eyes for a moment,
and seek a position that gives you a sense of dignity, of stability.
The posture, namely.
And with the inner vision, look at that position.
Notice how it feels to inhabit a human body.
Look at the contact with the chair, the feet with the ground.
Notice what the experience is
on the chest, the shoulders, on the face.
Notice the effect of drawing a slight smile on the face.
If you simply change the gesture with a smile,
change the experience.
And then, we will pay attention to a wonderful process that we have
which is called 'breathing.'
And watch as the breath flows through the body.
How is there an air intake we call inspiration,
a moment that seems to give the return.
And another moment we call exhalation.
And how this process involves the body,
but it also has an effect on the mind.
Try to pay attention to the breath in some place that you can follow it well.
In the nostrils or in the movement of the abdomen.
Accompanying with the attention to the breathing.
As if this moment was the most important.
As if life depended on it.
If you notice that the attention goes to the future or to the past,
kindly return it to bring the breath.
At this point,
maybe you notice that the breath is changing a little.
Perhaps you notice that the mind and body calm down.
(Chimes bells)
You can open your eyes and simply notice what has been the effect of these minutes
paying attention to your breathing.
And you will realize that when we practice
exercises that connect us with the present moment,
a species appears of natural internal well-being.
Tranquility.
Relaxation.
It's like the body recovers that harmony a little,
and what we now know is that this well-being
that comes from the practice of mindfulness
is circuits, which we could say brain interns,
which have the neuroplastic capacity.
This means that if you practice, you get better at it.
Same as playing the violin or learn a language.
So these exercises become in a way to create wellness internally.
When one takes the habit of dedicating some minutes a day
to do these exercises,
he begins to generate a source of inner well-being.
And this source of inner well-being,
it also affects other engines of inner well-being that we have.
And another is resilience.
Resilience is the ability to live in adversity,
to function in adversity and even grow in adversity.
In order to be resilient we need to be aware.
Adversity itself can bring down a person,
but when we put awareness and resources for managing,
then we start to develop natural mechanisms of resilience --
as we have seen in the example of the doctors --
regulate negative emotions, manage depression,
anxiety, and hostility, which have to do with the profession.
And this also causes generosity appearence and kindness in a natural way.
Because when we are calmer, we are in a situation to be most grateful,
we are less bothered by things,
we worry more for others and we are more generous.
Kindness and generosity are other drivers of well-being.
We are social animals and those practices that do good to others make us feel good.
And this has to do with the latter motor of well-being,
which is the mood.
When we are optimistic, we see challenges, we see opportunities,
we look at the good things that are in life,
then we are also launching the motors of well-being.
And you see that they are related with each other.
When a person is more conscious,
he also begins to develop this kindness naturally.
He improves the mood because he realizes it does not make sense
to be complaining all the time about some things and others
that cannot be changed.
He realizes that human relationship are more enriching
when we talk about the things that connect us
and not what disconnects us.
When we take care, we are not bothered.
Then this begins to generate a form different from living.
It is not a new thing.
The ancients already knew.
Michel de Montaigne, who is a well-known French philosopher,
wrote this poetry that says,
"When I dance, I dance. When I sleep, I sleep.
And when I walk through a forest,
if my thought distract towards distant affairs -
which is what we call mindfulness,
I lead him back to the road, to the beauty of my solitude."
He practiced mindfulness in his own way.
And this idea has now been taken up by a car brand
that has made a very interesting announcement,
which is precisely run here in Barcelona and we are going to see now:
(Video) (Music)
Narrator: When you work, you work.
When you rest, you rest.
When you pedal, you pedal.
When you dance, you dance.
When you jump, you jump.
And when you scream, you scream.
If you have to fight, fight.
When you help, help.
And when you try, really try.
When you advance, move forward.
When you play, play.
(Music)
And when you dream, dream.
When you win, win.
And when you lose, especially when you lose, lose.
When you drive, drive.
I think it's great that a brand of successful cars
makes an announcement about, 'When you lose, you lose."
It seems as though everything is winning, but that is not the case.
Losing is very important, because if one loses with awareness, he learns.
If one gains with conscience, he does not believe it.
If you play with consciousnesses, you enjoy it.
If one rests consciously, he really rests.
And the problem we have is that we tried to make everything mixed.
So the key to me is:
Losing or winning is not the important thing.
The important thing is to live consciously
because that is the most interesting thing in life.
So thank you so much for your attention.
(Applause)
