Transcripts
so it wasn't like a perfect 365 day
streak that I used it for there are a
few days here and there that I missed
and I went on a bunch of very long
streaks but I know I used it for a year
because I paid for the subscription for
a year and when I stopped using it the
subscription ran out and I use it for
about an average I'd say about 15
minutes a day basically every day for a
year knowing what I know now I
definitely definitely regret using it
for that long so first of all I want to
clarify even though I do think that du
lingo can be one of the worst and
slowest methods to learn a language I'm
not saying that it's bad or even that I
wouldn't recommend it the app definitely
has its place and there's some really
good things about it uh I'll get into
that later in the video but first I want
to go over why I personally regret using
it for so long and regret using it at
all really based on what I know now so I
actually realized that after I started
doing other things to learn language
like watching TV and stuff um that I
actually hate using dingo but I didn't
even realize it when I was using it for
some reason but I honestly cannot stand
using the app one of the biggest reasons
I can't stand using it is because I feel
like it punishes you a lot for making
mistakes like you get something wrong
and it makes I don't know annoying noise
that's the opposite of when you get
something right and it really bothered
me it would actually make me angry when
I got it wrong it was like you know I
was trying to it was like when I play a
video game and get angry or something
and another thing it is a punish you for
making the tiniest grammatical errors
which in my opinion especially when
you're starting out is not really
something that you should be stressing
over like if your goal is to be able to
talk to people and have conversations
small grammatical errors are are
actually the last thing that you should
fix because you can have a fluent
conversation and have very bad
grammatical erors you should still learn
everything to do correctly of course but
I think focusing on Tiny grammatical
airs is a bad way to do it another thing
I felt is just the app was way too slow
um I had the most fun with it when I
skipped way ahead like kind of past the
level that I was at but they make it
hard to skip ahead because they make you
do a little test to try to skip ahead I
think is how it worked
and if you get too many tiny little
grammatical errors wrong then you can't
skip ahead like I said when I skipped
way ahead I felt like I've learned a lot
more it was more fun for me I like
challenges and it I felt like I was
being pushed more in learning new like
grammatical structures and learning new
words and stuff another thing I didn't
like about is that you run into the same
words and stuff that you already know so
well and they give them to you so many
times which yeah a lot of language
learning you do have to repeat that
stuff over and over but for some reason
just bothered me how it was done in the
app for me it's more fun when you get
the repetition a more natural way like
through stories and things like that
another thing that I don't like about
the app and this could just be my
opinion but it doesn't teach you really
any grammatical rules and when I had
come into using the app i' actually
started out by learning the basic
grammatic rules for Spanish when I was
using the app I felt like that a lot of
it could have been learned Faster by
learning these grammatical rules first
so for example in Spanish there are I
don't know there's like 10 or 20
different tenses for the verbs or
something like that and then there's for
each tense there's different endings to
the verbs but then for each for all the
verbs there's what there's we she they I
you there's like five different people
so there's a different ending for each
person and then depending on the tense
there's also a different ending so for
every verb there's really like a hundred
out there's a lot of different words you
have to learn probably over a hundred
now learning these but there's basic
patterns and basic rules for all this
stuff and I feel like not learning these
basic rules it's going to take you a lot
longer just seeing every verb as like a
different word and not understanding the
patterns at first but the number one
worst thing about du lingo is this if
anyone is saying that you can get fluent
by just using du lingo that is complete
horseshit like you are never going to
get fluent by only using du lingo it's
it's impossible I don't care if you used
it for like 20 years straight you're not
going to get fluent let me explain like
the the hardest thing to get fluent is
understanding what people are saying and
you are never going to understand what
people are saying through listening to a
robot voice and the hardest level of
understanding people is when you hear
like native speakers that are friends
speaking in a very informal manner to
each other that is like 100% the hardest
the hardest type of speech to understand
like you can get pretty fluent but then
if you hear two people talking together
especially if they're maybe they're from
a different country or a different part
of a country they speak with a different
dialect or different slang that you
don't know it is extremely hard to
understand like you can be pretty at a
pretty advanced level in a language and
hear friends talk like that how I'm
describing and not be able to understand
almost anything they're saying so
obviously listening to a little robot
voice you're never never going to be
able to do that and anyone who's gotten
at a high level will tell you that the
amount of hours that you have to spend
just listening to be able to have the
comprehension skills is insane like it's
so much it takes forever I have spent
hundreds of hours of watching TVs and
movies listening to audio books podcast
I have talked spent tons of hours
talking to people over the phone and in
person and I'm still not fluent I still
cannot understand a lot I still cannot
understand like specific people the way
they talk it takes forever okay so those
are pretty much all the things I don't
like about it and I really do think that
it is one of the worst and slowest
methods uh to learn a language if you're
really serious about it and you want to
like get fluent and you want to learn
really as fast as possible but I still
think that it's a great app there are a
lot of good things about it and there
are certain people that I would actually
recommend it to and I would even if I
could go back in time I'd probably might
even still use it just a little bit so
some of the best things about that like
first of all it's it's very famous so
actually it makes language learning it's
going to make it more popular more
accessible uh it's free you can use it
on your phone anywhere you can go it's
designed to just do a little bit a day
and I think the best thing about that is
that it builds up a habit the app can
teach you to build up a habit and the
that's kind of the number one thing that
will make you succeed and anything is
building up a habit and the and in my
opinion the best way to start building a
habit is by doing it in very small
intervals every single day you want to
do something that is very easy for you
to do every day like if you want to uh
work out for example you're really out
of shape you're like I'm going to work
out for an hour every single day you're
going to feel like crap after that first
day you might even not do the hour
you're not going to want to go back
again but if you say I'm just going to
do you know workout for like five
minutes and that's my goal to do that
every day for this week that is easy
it's not a time commitment it's not not
going to wear you out too much very easy
to commit to and the app is sort of
designed to create and start a habit
like that which is very very good it's
very positive thing and a lot of the
things I don't like about it are just my
opinion and they're not going to be like
that for other people I'm sure a lot of
people find the app very fun and it's
more enjoyable for them and I think one
of the most important things with
finding methods to learn a language is
you have to find something that's very
fun for you the more fun for it it is
for you the more you're going to do it
the more you want to going to do it the
faster you're going to learn and the
more you're going to learn and to be
honest a lot of the negative things
about the app are only relevant if
you're only using that app so what I
would recommend for people if they're
serious is use the app if you want but
do a bunch of other things as well and
know that like the comprehension and
listening is so important you have to
practice your listening skills so much
so anything that I would add in to using
the app if you're at least doing one
other thing with it it's just practice
the listening skills maybe you're a
super beginner you're like how can I
listen to like an audio book or watch a
TV show yet all you got to do is you can
even do it for free there they are
programs and stuff designed to do this I
dream Spanish I think is one of them I
think they have different languages but
it's called comprehensible input so you
can just Google or search into YouTube
like Spanish for example just put
Spanish comprehensible input and then
just put uh A1 or beginner and you
should be able to find some really easy
stuff that even as a very beginner you
can pra start to practice your listening
skills by only listening to everything
in your native language and I definitely
would still recommend the app to people
actually I think I recommend it to one
of my friends cuz he was just starting
out and I even told him I was like it's
one of the worst ways to learn a
language is like why did you give me
this but I'm like well it's perfect for
beginners like he doesn't even know if
he's going to commit to the language yet
this is the easiest way to just start
building the habit and to kind of test
the waters and see if you might want to
do it long term and the main thing I
want people to get out of this video so
the reason that I used du lingo for way
too long was part of it was I had a lack
of motivation I didn't have that much
motivation but obviously I was still
motivated because like I said I wasn't
enjoying it that much and I did it for
pretty much every single day for a year
straight so I think the real reason why
I was using this was that I just didn't
know about other language learning
methods the only other thing I had done
was I had watched like
grammatical uh grammatical lections on
YouTube and I had taken notes and I
would go over the notes but that's quite
a bit of work and I got sort of lazy and
less motivated and I just started using
du
lingo and I didn't know about any other
ways of learning and for some reason I
never thought to search in YouTube you
know how to learn a language the as fast
as possible optimal ways for learning
languages I never found a YouTube
channel like mine until after I'd found
this stuff out on my own and the only
reason I figured this out was because
I've been using dualingo so long and
felt like I was making a lot of progress
and then I traveled to Mexico City on my
own and stayed there for 10 days and I
realized that I could not understand
anything that anyone said and I realized
that the number one thing I need to do
was practice listening and then once I
got back and that gave me a lot more
motivation too obviously and once I got
back I started going through like
different TV shows and all these
different learning methods and I finally
found uh my favorite show that I liked
and I started going through that and it
was a lot more work but it was so much
fun for me I kept doing it I learned way
faster and learned way more and if you
want to learn about watching TV shows
and how you can learn to do that check
out my other videos
