Transcripts
hey there everyone it's Damian here
running solo this actually week for
pixelated episode 10 yes we've had 10
episodes of this podcast and I'm sat
here kind of licking my wounds from the
week at iio in San Francisco Airport
ready to head home and I've got some
thoughts yeah I wanted to share some
thoughts Abner sadly not with me right
now because he's actually heading home
himself but we've had a really busy week
some really announcements I wanted to go
over a few things I've experienced as a
first time IO attendee um my bag's full
of Swag I'm ready to head home and get
some rest and re
relaxation but there's a lot I say
there's a lot to talk about it's going
to be super quick one today just want to
give you some fun fun thoughts as well
but let me get into a couple of demos
that I saw while I was IO that might
have been talked about before you might
think you know a little bit about some
of these projects but one of those was
Project Starline I think it's Starline
it's
the tech that basically is like
conferencing Tech or 3D conference in
Tech and I went to go see this on day
one of iio straight after the keynote
keynote was really good fun it was a
little bit different I don't know what I
expected ahead of time obviously there's
a big huge focus with AI and that's kind
of cool I'm not really a huge AI person
and I'm really interested to see what
Google does with AI moving forward in
terms of their actual product straty y
but it was it was a funny one because
youve I've gone from that straight into
something that is more let's just say
mundane mundane is the way that I would
describe it Starline is one of those
things that ahead of time I'm going to
say I was a skeptic we've all done video
calls all on video conferencing software
it's just one of those disappointing
things where you look at it and you
think oh this is no fun we all do we all
do these and we use them and we think
that oh it's pretty plain it's pretty
boring there's nobody there that
nobody out there probably who cares that
much about using conference in Tech but
with that said I was pleasantly
surprised as a skeptic I was I was going
into this kind of blind in some respects
like like you IO sorry like me you
probably watched that MKBHD video of uh
him using it last year so the Tech's
been around for a little while but I
believe it has developed quite a bit in
the last 10 12 months effectively this
is conferencing software that places
somebody in the room with you in 3D
using display in uh special camera Tech
and it I believe someone has told me
that it it's a bit like the stereoscopic
3D that the 3DS used to use but at a
larger scale and at higher resolution
and when that was first revealed I just
speaking to one of the uh demo people uh
before going into a little private room
where I could see it
I got to say I think I didn't expect it
to feel as realistic as it did it
actually felt like I was sat across from
somebody and a lot of that is to do with
the high resolution a lot of that is to
do with the fact that the 3D depth
within a certain frame or Zone when the
person sat across from you it genuinely
feels like you're making contact with
someone it's not like when you do a
video call and you're looking into the
camera you look into probably another
tab another window looking at yourself
almost like see do you look like you're
paying attention or you might even open
another another tab or do something else
and just leave it on the background this
is
more I don't want to say interactive
interactive is not the way to describe
it it's more
like you're more like you're in them no
this is going to sound really really
weird but it is in the moment that's the
only way to describe it because you make
you genuinely make eye contact with that
person and when you made eye contact
with a person you you're having a proper
conversation you're having you're not
just talking to a screen it feels like
talking to a person and
while it is excellent I will say there
are some there are some little drawbacks
let me let me get into some of the
drawbacks when I looked closely as high
resolution as the screen is as good as a
3D is because it genuinely does at times
if you brain like you flick between is
this a person or is not a person it you
can actually see like aliasing on the
fringes of say someone's shirt someone's
hairline someone's their facial features
that said it's really sharp it's
ridiculously sharp in fact I don't know
what the actual resolution is I don't
know how you could even measure that in
a 3 3D image but it's like it's like
three so 3D TVs back in the day 3D TVs
you saw something on the the the Z or
the Zed axis and it felt like you were
looking into the TV so the 3D was behind
the screen and obviously this is in
front of the screen and the range of
motion that they have is with I think
it's within about a foot or a foot of
the screen itself so using the tech that
they have it basically they reach out to
you and one of the demos that they did
is they they picked up an apple and put
the Apple towards me and for a couple of
seconds I said I actually wanted to
throw it at the screen but that would
have been quite funny but they obviously
don't want to damage their own Tech but
if someone threw an apple you a duck I'm
genuinely think you were duck because it
does look CU it tracks it tracks any
object it's not like the it's just the
person like I'm sure you'll have seen
the demos of uh uh what's the I can't
remember Apple Vision Pro Apple Vision
Pro so Apple Vision Pro has those like
3D avatars that are really onc Val and
there just weird looking this is an
actual person just fully rendered fully
realized and the the real even the real
time Shadows were ridiculous and it just
helps sell it with the fact that there's
a slight curve in the display as well so
you get even more 3D
depth I I'm a skeptic so I was basically
look coming into it thinking this is
going to be terrible I'm not going to
enjoy this or I knew what to expect and
in the end I was ridiculously impressed
I was looking at it
thinking I was looking at ahead of time
like oh yeah it'll be fine it'll be
pretty cool but it won't be like this it
won't necessarily be I'm going stopping
short of saying groundbreaking but it
was one of yeah it was one of those
things that you have to see it to to
kind of understand it that said another
negative I don't necessarily know where
this is going to be applied is it going
to be applied in business and for now
it's only one to one cuz if you put two
people in the room in front of the
screen it messes with the the um the
image and obviously there's limitations
as well in terms of like it's quite a
big piece of Kit so it's not something
that you poent you could potentially
have it in the corner of your living
room but might be a little bit weird to
have something like this so it doesn't
seem to be like a consumer element right
now so where does it where does it end
up Does this does it go anywhere do we
have anything that is going to be really
developed
upon that's probably a question to POS
of the guys and I kind of did allude to
that I was like yeah it's cool but where
are you going with this I didn't really
get necessarily a complete answer but it
definitely seems like conference calling
is is the is the end goal but I would
liken it to going somewhere deliberately
and speaking to someone so my thought
process was say for instance you got
family that live abroad and you haven't
seen something someone in a long time
sure you can do a video call and a video
call is cool but it doesn't necessarily
give you that connection in the same way
and I felt like I was actually speaking
to a person across the room and I think
a lot of that was to do with the eye
contact I wasn't looking for a camera it
was like seamless I was looking directly
at them and the the tech did the
rest if we could get even like 20% of
that with Google meet I think it could
be a big step forward for video calling
and people would use it more because I'm
sure like me you hate I hate doing video
calls I hate conference calls
specifically because nobody's really
paying attention apart from one or two
people and you come away with it
thinking why why wasn't that an email I
think for businesses this might be a
good way to do it or even interviews I
could imagine it being quite useful for
interviews or practicing maybe learning
the language that kind of stuff so there
there's definitely some elements I'm
thinking it could be used for education
and business but away from shiny things
that are not necessarily
new we had Android 15 beta 2 which
dropped yesterday with absolutely zero
unfair no mention in the keynote which
was weird kind of strange there was a
little bit about Android but there
wasn't anything in depth this is a bit
of an odd release in some ways because
this is actually the biggest release
that we've had for two years in terms of
betas there's it had the most feature
set it had the most interesting new
addition for me in terms of private
space I don't know how I'll use it but
it felt a little bit like the it's very
similar to what Samsung has had for a
few years now it feels like the locked
folder but for your actual Android
device itself so all of the on device
apps and stuff so there's something
there for people who want an extra layer
of privacy what else did we get we had a
new the Reed redesigned uh sound menu
which was probably my out andout
favorite edition we needed something
there but in terms of the overall look
and feel it is businesses usual I know
we've talked about in this pod before
myself and ab that we probably hit
platform
maturity a long time ago pre even pre-
Android 10 I think visually there isn't
that much that's changed massively
there's a few little tweaks here and
there and it's more refinement again
there's no massive liquor paint there's
no house redesign as as it were and I
know a lot of people disappointed by
that and I as someone who cares about
Android UI and Android beta updates that
was disappointing I think if you temper
your expectations there's a lot here
that you can delve into we've done a
huge Deep dive I say huge Deep dive
we've done a fairly substantial dive
into over on the YouTube channel and if
you haven't already checked that out I
urge you to do so I'm suitably impressed
there's a few things that I think we're
going to see developers their beta
progresses hopefully we have a couple
more updates I know that usually per the
timeline we're looking maybe two more
releases it seems like this laid the
groundwork for the rest of the rest of
the preview phase before hopefully we
get Android 15 stable sometime around
August September ahead of pixel 9 Series
in in in the in the Autumn or in the
fall do I think this is worth it in
terms of for wait people who are waiting
for all these major changes maybe not
necessarily there is
um there's a lot of things that I would
consider minor and I know that some
people out there will be disappointed
because they're still waiting on Google
doing a major overhaul but I think since
material ERS has has they hit that point
and Google have just really really
tightening it up I'd like to see some or
I'd like to see how AI is going to be
integrated a bit more I know that Gemini
is is almost decoupled from Android as a
system and that means that we're going
to have and Android updates completely
separate from Gemini and Gemini can be
added to devices through Play Store
updates and stuff or play updates play
system updates that's great but it
doesn't necessarily mean a great deal to
most people if you're not using
Gemini I'd like to see I'd like to have
seen Google mentioned some things in the
keynote on how we're going to see it
integrated more into various system
sections there was some demos I know
Dave was on stage and I've got to say
what I've got to pose another question
what the heck happened to Dave's Irish
accent yeah I thought it was an American
stood up there uh from my seating I
don't know whether it was the audio
maybe I need to watch the live stream
back on I'm really intrigued to see what
happened to his Irish accent it seemed
to have disappeared strange yeah he he
gave some demos of some cool stuff but I
can't say that Android felt like a focus
point this year as much it felt like a
bit of a side note I know that the meme
is that and even Sundar alluded to it
that AI is is what where Google's headed
and I completely understand that but you
got to service your uh one of your core
audiences or your core business areas
Android's still huge it's a little bit
disappointing I know ahead of time we
had some conversations myself and ab and
you may have heard it on uh the previous
podcast that we what we hoped what we're
hoping for and I got to say some of
those uh some of my wishes were met some
of them have definitely have been left
hanging on those but all in all can't
seem too disappointed in the grand
scheme of things we finally had a big a
big beta we had some big beta energy and
we finally got to see some actual UI
tweaks because hey and 15 developer
preview felt like well I don't even know
what it felt like
but maybe there's some of that is due to
the fact that we're getting pixel
feature drops and Android feature drops
that are completely decoupled from from
platform upgrades so yeah we have a rod
for our own back a little bit I like
pixel feature drops I'm sure you like
pixel feature drops but at the end of
the day we can't expect both to be huge
when uh there's technically months
between releases so maybe some of these
things will get enveloped into a a bit
like we did saw last year QPR betas and
then when we're coming to talk about
and5 it's another little mini step I
won't be surprised if Google pulled that
once again but in terms of uh Android 15
beta 2 cool stuff you should definitely
try it on your phone it's really nice
and stable I'm running that on a couple
of devices pixel 8A pixel uh 8 as well I
haven't put it on my pro model yet CU I
want to see how it how it ages and how
it fares but pretty thumbs up pretty
thumbs up in terms of like usability and
stuff like that but maybe we'll see um
maybe we'll see Things Fall Apart over
the next few days I've only really had
had on my devices for about 24 hours
now what else did I see at iio that I
really want to talk about well we went
to the a there was an AI sandbox area
which is almost like just showcase some
of Google's new tools like their Imaging
image generation tool from text prompts
there uh all I think it's all music
effects library that that that has been
touted and used for a little while
genuinely impressive to see Tech where
you can take a line of Pros or a line of
text from Alice in Wonderland and turn
that into turn that into an image and
then turn that get get a playing get
like a printed playing card from that
put some of them on social media when I
speak to Kyle he he went through that
demo with me and we were messing around
with it and genuinely impressed with
that I thought that was really cool and
I mean I'm ethically I don't know where
I stand on that I think it's a little
bit weird to have things generated from
existing bodies of works and then is it
really art I'm not so sure the there was
another cool uh although I have a bones
pick actually with with Google's AI Tech
they had a penalty shootout thing they
had this penalty sh I don't I can't
remember what it was called it was like
pixel top bins or something so let me
set set the scene for you if you don't
know what penalty is in soccer football
basically there's a spot in this in in
one of the boxes in front of the goals
where if there's a foul committed in the
Box the opposition team gets a or the
attacking team gets a penalty and and
you take a shot with just you versus the
goalkeeper the person trying to stop the
goal and so Google have made this piece
of tech which uses pixel 8 Pro camera
systems in tandem with an AI tool that
generates and assesses how you take a
penalty right so I took six penalties at
this and I've got to say really
disappointed it scored you on three
Focus points so power
style and I think it was shot accuracy
and then it gave you a score out of uh
100 I think it was technically 99 I
think there was 100 if you could
complete it if that makes sense
so I'm not throwing shade at people here
but I definitely saw a lot of people who
I would say toe poked it and I'm not
criticizing I understand that soccer
football's not your national sport but a
lot of you Americans out there tow punt
the ball you kick it the kicking stances
are it's not a football stands yet I'm
seeing people getting high 80s for a big
toe pooke barely hitting the
target so I'm going in pretty pretty I
I'll say pissed off I'm I'm pretty
pissed off as someone who loves the art
form I went up struck a penalty bottom
left
corner no keep it keeping no chance
Manuel no is not saving that and that's
a reference from my friend Abner who is
a Bayern Munich fan by the
way I get
I'm thinking I've struck that nice looks
good on the still image pretty good STS
strike the ball knees knees level the
ball I know I'm getting inside baseball
here or Inside Soccer but I get a score
of 70 I'm absolutely livid how could I I
I remember I spoke to a couple of the
guys I was like how are you an analyzing
this but it was fun I got to say it was
fun um trying to beat your score hey
Google you can bring this to every
single event and I'll just go and smash
penalties all day I don't care about new
devices just let me take penalties all
day it was interesting to see that Tech
applied with existing Hardware as well
like seeing pixels in the top corners of
the of the uh of the goal I'm sadly I
didn't take any pictures though because
I too busy taking penalties but if um if
I have one of the guys who who did take
some images I'll get them to share them
on socials as well thought it was really
cool to see that applied in some sort of
real time way even though I'm I'm I'm
going to be honest I'm
completely uh what's the way to describe
it completely arguing with the data I
think the way they an analyze data is
completely wrong because realistically
if it goes in it's good penalty got rate
out of 99 if you score a goal who cares
at the end of the day there was no
goalkeeper though so maybe they should
put a goalkeeper on net and we'll start
analyzing penalties properly if anyone
out there is listening from Google get
back to me on that send me a DM send me
an email I'm going to thresh it out with
you and um maybe we'll sort out a
penalty shootout and I'll show you how
people really take a penalty yeah
overall um some really cool stuff really
enjoyed my time and if you have any
questions about iio if you've never
attended before you want to know some
stuff definitely drop me a message on
social media we got to see got to meet
some people who watch the channel listen
to the podcast genuinely that was
absolutely awesome that was humbling
it's cool to to meet and see people in
person it's not something we do all the
time so I absolutely loved every second
of that that was probably the best part
of the week meeting people who actually
pay attention to what we do and love
what we do I I want to do more of that
so maybe next year at iio we can have a
meet and
greet I'd love to do that that would be
absolutely awesome um yeah I don't
really have much more to say about iio I
might have some more thoughts next week
when we do a proper debrief myself and
Abner but overall it was I'm suitably
impressed really good really good event
it was really hot we should have put
more sun cream on but yeah that's enough
from me uh thanks for listening this is
episode 10 I can't believe we made it to
episode 10 so far and this is trust me
to end up with episode 10 as solo I'm
sat in the airport just waiting to go
home tired but really really happy uh
yeah thanks for listen to pick L episode
10 and I will uh yeah next time I speak
to you it will be the Abner back on the
pod
