play00:00

hi everyone this is Kathy from House of

play00:03

TOEFL and today's video is going to be

play00:07

about the summary question in the

play00:10

reading section of the TOEFL IBT now I

play00:13

get a lot of requests to teach the

play00:16

summary question because it's worth two

play00:19

points so it's a big chunk of your score

play00:22

so people always want to know how to

play00:25

solve it so let's talk about that

play00:28

question in today's video now as you may

play00:31

know I wrote a book about the reading

play00:33

section which you can purchase on Amazon

play00:35

which I will link in the video

play00:37

description below but today I want to go

play00:40

over some strategies for how to solve

play00:44

this question that is worth two points

play00:47

now the first thing I want to say is

play00:49

it's extremely difficult to solve this

play00:52

question if you haven't done the first

play00:55

nine questions of course in the real

play00:58

test this won't be an issue you but a

play01:01

lot of students come to me and say Kathy

play01:03

I want to take a lesson and I just want

play01:06

to study the summary question

play01:09

to which I reply

play01:11

well have you seen the Harry Potter

play01:14

movies and if they say no then I say

play01:17

well summarize the Harry Potter movies

play01:19

they say but I can't Kathy I haven't

play01:22

seen the Harry Potter movies

play01:23

exactly if you haven't done those nine

play01:26

questions it's going to be very

play01:28

difficult to solve the tenth the summary

play01:31

question so I tell students I cannot

play01:34

really teach you the summary question if

play01:37

we haven't done the previous nine

play01:38

questions it doesn't make sense those

play01:41

questions are in an order for a reason

play01:44

so my first tip is don't try to get good

play01:48

at the summary questions on their own

play01:51

without doing the first nine questions

play01:54

the second reason for that is because

play01:57

there will be Clues along the way those

play02:00

nine questions actually do contain Clues

play02:03

they tell you what the important ideas

play02:05

of the passage are and I have found a

play02:08

lot of times the answers to the those

play02:11

questions actually appear as correct

play02:15

answer Selections in the summary

play02:17

questions so try to remember the answers

play02:21

to the questions that you answered as

play02:23

you go through questions one to nine try

play02:26

to remember what parts of the text

play02:29

ETS directed your attention to those May

play02:33

reappear in the summary now let's say

play02:35

you've done that you've done the first

play02:36

nine questions and you get to that

play02:38

summary question step one is to read the

play02:42

sentence they give you that's in bold

play02:44

that is almost like a title it tells you

play02:47

what the opening statement is about

play02:52

now the next thing you want to do is

play02:54

going to seem very counter-intuitive

play02:57

it's going to seem like the opposite of

play03:00

what you're used to or accustomed to

play03:02

it's going to seem strange but what I do

play03:05

is I look for incorrect answers now that

play03:09

seems weird Kathy why would you look for

play03:10

the wrong answers easy so I can

play03:13

eliminate them because for the first

play03:15

year or so I was teaching TOEFL when I

play03:18

got to the summary question in the

play03:20

reading I was looking for the correct

play03:22

answers that seemed logical to me but

play03:25

the problem was I was getting two out of

play03:28

three correct then when I reversed my

play03:31

strategy all of a sudden I was starting

play03:34

to do much better to the point where I

play03:36

am where I am now as an author of a

play03:39

reading book and I teach students okay

play03:41

let's look for the wrong answers now

play03:44

first of all one will usually pop out as

play03:46

very obviously wrong it will be off

play03:49

topic or it will be something you don't

play03:51

even remember seeing so it's really easy

play03:53

to eliminate now what I like to do for

play03:56

this one is actually write down the

play03:57

letter and put an X through it so if B

play04:00

is very obviously wrong I'll write down

play04:02

a b and put a big extra it and then I

play04:04

don't look at B again this is one of the

play04:07

very few times I actually use the pencil

play04:09

and paper during the TOEFL reading

play04:12

section I don't write down a lot during

play04:14

the reading section but here I do it

play04:16

helps me to keep track of the answers

play04:18

I'm no longer going to look at because

play04:22

again time is of the essence time is

play04:25

very important so once you've gotten rid

play04:27

of an answer you don't want to keep

play04:28

coming back to that answer

play04:30

now let's talk about how to identify

play04:32

those trickier answer choices that look

play04:36

like they might be right one thing that

play04:39

you want to look out for of course and

play04:40

this is true for the entire reading

play04:42

section is Extreme answers so those will

play04:46

have things like all Always Forever

play04:50

never those types of answers are

play04:53

typically incorrect you should double

play04:55

check because it's not a hundred percent

play04:58

of the time but ninety percent of the

play05:00

time extreme answers are not correct the

play05:03

other thing you should be aware of is

play05:05

comparisons those are also usually not

play05:08

correct that is true for the entire

play05:10

reading section when I say comparisons I

play05:13

mean X is bigger than y

play05:16

uh Z is more important than a uh B is

play05:21

less significant than D you know these

play05:23

kinds of things that compare two things

play05:25

look for as as big as as small as look

play05:30

for the word then

play05:32

t-h-a-n that word is a comparative word

play05:35

those are usually incorrect again not a

play05:39

hundred percent of the time but ninety

play05:41

percent of the time if you feel a

play05:43

comparison is correct that's fine but I

play05:46

would suggest you go back to the passage

play05:48

and you check just to be sure because

play05:50

typically those are not correct

play05:53

then there will be things that are not

play05:55

even mentioned in the passage but look

play05:58

good because they use some of the same

play05:59

language so if you have a big passage

play06:02

about raccoons and habitats and the word

play06:05

woodlands and trees and arboreal and

play06:09

those types of words the ETS might take

play06:11

those words put them in an answer choice

play06:14

but if you actually read that answer

play06:15

Choice carefully you'll realize that was

play06:18

not even in the passage at all so beware

play06:22

of just trying to match words we want to

play06:25

actually match content not just words

play06:29

the other thing is of course something

play06:31

that is a twisted meaning right so it's

play06:34

twisted in some way for example there

play06:37

might be a passage that says that the

play06:40

Alexandria library in Egypt was a

play06:43

cultural center that spread the Greek

play06:46

language throughout the Middle East

play06:48

maybe an answer Choice says Scholars

play06:51

came to the library in Alexandria to

play06:55

study the Greek Greek language now that

play06:58

reverses the fact that okay the language

play07:01

spread from this Library it reverses it

play07:03

to Scholars came to the library so that

play07:06

makes that answer Choice incorrect

play07:10

um then you're going to have answers

play07:12

that the ETS just simply makes up it's

play07:16

not anywhere to be found in the passage

play07:18

but you do have to be careful because I

play07:21

have one thing to tell you that's very

play07:24

important sometimes you might notice

play07:26

that there's a paragraph or at the very

play07:29

end a few sentences that you didn't have

play07:32

to read hmm well ETS has a little trick

play07:37

and this little trick they do is they

play07:40

won't ask you to read a paragraph you

play07:43

don't have to read it at all

play07:44

so you never answered any questions

play07:46

about it and then

play07:49

in the summary

play07:51

there's actually a question related to

play07:53

that paragraph you didn't read

play07:55

so my recommendation to solve that

play07:57

problem is take note you know I didn't

play08:00

have to read paragraph four or answer

play08:02

any questions

play08:03

better read paragraph four just to make

play08:07

sure that they're not trying to distract

play08:10

me because they think I haven't read it

play08:13

okay

play08:14

another tip is if there are two answer

play08:17

choices that are very similar then you

play08:21

one has to go they will not both be

play08:23

correct so let's say that there's two

play08:26

answer choices that both discuss the

play08:29

importance of religion in ancient Greece

play08:32

and they both discuss religion but in a

play08:36

different way well only one of those can

play08:39

be correct and I found that to be true

play08:42

in every TOEFL test I've ever taken so

play08:45

if you have the same topic only one is

play08:48

correct every answer choice you pick

play08:50

should be quite different now I have one

play08:53

more thing to say before I let you go

play08:55

and that is when you look at the

play08:57

instructions for the summary question it

play09:00

says that incorrect answers may be Minor

play09:03

Details

play09:07

true that I don't think is true now you

play09:11

might say but Kathy it's in the

play09:12

instructions okay fair enough but how

play09:16

many thousands of reading passages have

play09:18

I done

play09:19

that's not really one of their traps

play09:22

that it's a minor detail they know that

play09:25

you as the reader are not going to be

play09:27

able to distinguish a major idea from a

play09:30

minor idea that was in the passage but

play09:32

it's minor I mean how would you really

play09:34

know that you can't read the author's

play09:36

mind to know what he thinks is major and

play09:38

minor so what I have found is this idea

play09:41

in the instructions that you can

play09:43

eliminate something because it's a minor

play09:44

idea doesn't really apply but it traps a

play09:49

lot of my students why because they see

play09:52

a short sentence and think oh it's short

play09:54

it just has a few words let's get rid of

play09:58

it it's a minor idea because it's short

play10:00

no short answers can actually be correct

play10:04

because it can be densely packed with

play10:06

information

play10:07

like imagine the sentence that

play10:11

Alexander's Empire opened up new market

play10:14

economies for art artists and Traders

play10:17

that continued many centuries after his

play10:21

death

play10:22

short sentence but guess what it has a

play10:26

lot of information packed into just a

play10:27

few words so don't eliminate something

play10:30

just because it's short

play10:32

okay I think I'll leave it at that uh of

play10:35

course I'm gonna put a link to my book

play10:37
