3 Forehand Topspin Drills
Summary
TLDRIn this informative video, the host introduces three effective drills to enhance forehand Top Spin in tennis. The first drill focuses on the sensation of brushing the ball for a controlled Top Spin. The second drill emphasizes getting the racket head below the incoming ball to achieve a low-to-high swing path. Lastly, the reverse finish drill is introduced to increase the upward angle of the swing, resulting in more spin. The use of a Proton ball machine is highlighted for its benefits in solo practice, but the host notes that these drills can be effectively practiced with basket feeds or hand feeding.
Takeaways
- đŸ Understanding Top Spin: Top spin is generated when the ball rotates forward, dipping back into the court and allowing for more net clearance and swing acceleration.
- đ€ Correct Grip Essential: To create top spin, it's crucial to have the right grip on the forehand racket and to start the swing beneath the incoming ball's level.
- đ Swing Motion: A low to high swing motion around the ball is key to imparting top spin, with the racket moving in an upward trajectory.
- đ Sensation Drill: Practice hitting the ball with a 'brushing' sensation, feeling the grip on the back of the ball to develop the desired top spin.
- đïž Soft Hands Important: Keep your hand relaxed while brushing to prevent the ball from flying long.
- đ Racket Positioning: Drill 2 focuses on getting the racket head beneath the ball, correcting common issues with club players' horizontal swing paths.
- đŻ Targeted Practice: Use a ball machine to feed balls for practicing the drill, adjusting settings for optimal training.
- đ Under and Over Swing: The drill involves swinging underneath the ball and then hitting it in the last second to train the brain for the low slot position.
- đą Reverse Finish Technique: Drill 3 introduces the reverse finish to increase the upward angle of the swing around contact, resulting in more spin.
- đïžââïž Versatile Training: Although a ball machine is used for demonstration, the drills can be effectively performed with basket feeds, hand feeds, or self-feeds.
- đ Progression and Adaptation: Start with simple drills to feel the brushing sensation and gradually progress to more complex techniques like the reverse finish.

Outlines
đ Introduction to Generating Top Spin
This paragraph introduces the video's focus on three drills for generating more effortless Top Spin on the forehand. It explains the benefits of Top Spin, such as increased net clearance and the ability to accelerate more with the swing. The paragraph also discusses the basics of how Top Spin is generated, emphasizing the importance of the right grip and a low-to-high swing path. The video utilizes a proton ball machine for training purposes, highlighting its advantages for solo practice at home.
đ€Ÿââïž Drill 1: Sensation and Brushing Technique
The first drill focuses on the sensation of brushing the ball, which is key to generating Top Spin. It distinguishes between the feeling of hitting the ball flat and the brushing sensation that occurs when hitting with Top Spin. The importance of a relaxed hand is stressed to avoid a tight grip that could lead to hitting the ball too hard. The drill involves practicing the brushing sensation with the ball machine, emphasizing the need to feel the gripping sensation on the back of the ball and to maintain a relaxed hand throughout the motion.
đ Drill 2: Getting Racket Head Below the Ball
This drill addresses a common issue among club playersâhaving too much of a horizontal swing path. It emphasizes the need for a low-to-high vertical swing path to generate Top Spin. The drill involves swinging underneath the ball to force the player to get the racket head below the incoming ball. The use of the ball machine allows for adjustments in delay and spin factor, providing more time to focus on technique and prepare for the next shot.
đ€žââïž Drill 3: Utilizing the Reverse Finish
The final drill introduces the reverse finish, which increases the upward angle of the swing around contact, leading to more spin. It explains how this technique can be practiced by pulling directly up and over the head after making contact with the ball. The drill can be done with self-feeding or with the help of a ball machine, which allows for further adjustments to focus on the mechanics of the swing. Transcripts
in today's video I'm going to show you
three simple drills which you can use to
help you generate more effortless Top
Spin on your forehand and for this video
I am going to be using the proton ball
machine this machine is fantastic it
really allows you to do a lot of stuff
with your training when you're at home
by yourself but the first question we
got to ask is what is Top Spin and how
is it generated the most simple
explanation of Top Spin the ball will be
rotating in this forward manner like
this so if you see the logo logo of the
ball here the head trainer the ball will
rotate forward in this manner now the
reason Top Spin is so beneficial it
allows you to have more net clearance
the ball will dip back into the court
and it also allows you to accelerate
more with your swing so you're able to
be more dominant with the swing now next
question how is Top Spin generated it's
very simple all that needs to happen
providing you have the right grip on the
forehand the racket Head Start beneath
the level of the incoming ball and then
you simply just swing lower low to high
out towards your target with the racket
moving in this low to high fashion
around the ball that gives the Top Spin
rotation okay it's very easy and it's
very simple to go out and do but now
let's get into the three drills three
simple drills to help you generate more
Top Spin the first drill is all about
sensation there's two main Sensations
you have when you hit the ball you can
all grab a ball right now and do the
same thing the first sensation is a hit
you just hit the ball flat like this now
the second second sensation is
brush and if you hear it you may be able
to hear it on my microphone hear the
difference in
noise and
then when you brush you hear that
gripping sensation your griping the back
of the ball that's what you want to
start to tap into when you're trying to
work on generating more Top Spin you
want to start to feel the brushing
sensation on the ball now one of the key
things you need to keep in mind when
you're brushing you have to ensure that
your hand is nice and relaxed
if the hand is tight it'll look more
like this hit and most likely the ball
will fly long just like it did there so
the first one is softening the hands and
feeling the brushing sensation up the
back of the ball I'll just show you a
couple now with the machine so turn
brush again turn brush up the back of
the ball really hear that gripping
sensation when I brush
up so if you're set up brush a little
close on that
one turn brush just like so so let's go
on to drill number two and drill number
two is going to help you get the racket
head beneath the level of the incoming
ball and this is the most common issue
we see with Club players when they
struggle to generate Top Spin they have
too much of a horizontal swing path that
they swing through what you want is a
good low to high vertical swing path
that's going to help you with the Top
Spin so drill number two what I'm going
to do do I'm going to have the ball
machine feed me the ball and I'm going
to hit a rotation of Two Shots the first
shot I'm going to actually swing
underneath the ball I'm not going to hit
it I'm going to swing underneath that's
going to force me to get below with the
racket head I'll just show you one with
the cell feed watch I'll cell feed her
up and now I'll swing underneath it and
you really feel how it forces you to get
beneath the level of the incoming ball
then on the second one that you hit
you're going to trick your brain you're
going to imagine that going to swing
underneath it the last second you'll
actually hit the ball so it gets you and
forces you into that low slot position
and this is where the proton ball
machine really comes into play because
it allows you to do things like adjust
the delay in between each shot so for a
drill like this I would need a little
bit of a delay so I can hold my finish
and focus on the technique gives me time
also to then reset back and be prepared
for the next shot and you have a lot of
variations also you can adjust the spin
factor and so forth so the ball is not
coming at you too fast so it just gives
you a lot more time to focus in on the
key mechanics that you're working on but
let's see a couple now with the ball
machine so let's see a couple here with
a ball machine I'll do one where I swing
underneath and one where I hit the ball
so let's just see a couple rotations
here set up swing
underneath okay now next one I'm going
to
hit just focus on getting the racket
head below the ball now this one I'm
going to swing
underneath
next one set up hit little bit too close
on that one one more rotation swing
underneath now the next one I actually
hit the ball just focus on getting below
and swing up okay so now let's get into
the last drill final drill which is
drill three and we're going to actually
utilize what we call the reverse finish
now obviously you see Rafa do this all
the time where he really pulls up over
his head and it looks great when he does
it but there is also some versatility
there with his swing path because what
happens when you utilize this reverse
finish it really allows you to increase
the upward angle of your swing around
contact and remember more spin you want
to generate what you have to do is
increase the verticality of the Swing as
you make contact with the ball that's
going to give you more rotation on it so
what you can do is just do a couple of
Shad swings first where you physically
just pull directly up and really feel
when you're doing it watch my racket in
hand I go up to contact and then I just
pull down directly up and over my head
so you can see how vertical this swing
is now going directly up after you've
done that a few times you can also grab
a couple of
balls and just try that just by self
feeding the ball before you even go onto
any basket feeding or ball machine just
pull up and see when I do it look how
how the ball really arcs up over that
net watch her again here I'm just going
to go directly up just like that and
after you've done that a few times then
you can go on more difficult Fe feeds
I'm just going to use the ball machine
please do keep in mind for all of these
drills you don't need the machine you
can do exactly the same thing with
either a basket feed or a hand feed or
even just cell feeds you know you don't
need a ball machine to do this but let's
see a couple now with the
machine okay let's see a couple more
here I'm just going to set up and pull
directly up the back of the ball you
really see how the ball really arcs up
over that net and it really gives you
the feeling of generating that Top Spin
on the ball now also keep in mind the
more I start to accelerate the swing
with this the more spin I start to get
so the more safety I have on this ball
show you one more going to set up pull
directly up do that again I'm Miss show
you one more up so there you have it
three simple drills to help you generate
more Top Spin on the forehand in summary
of them the first is all about sensation
feel as you're striking the ball that
you're brushing the ball hear that
sensation and feel it when you're doing
it drill number two is swinging
underneath the ball in the beginning
that forces you to get the racket head
below which is very important and then
drill number three is try out that
reverse finish where it really increases
the verticality of your swing around
contact and as I said for this video I
have been using the proton ball machine
if you want more details on that you can
check out information below the video
but as mentioned you can do these drills
just as well training by yourself with
just a couple of balls in your hands so
I really hope you enjoy this video go
out give the drills a try let me know
how it goes in the comments below also
