🌐 Understanding Cultural Impact on Communication

The speaker discusses the significance of cultural differences in communication, emphasizing that misunderstandings often stem from unacknowledged cultural norms. They recount their initial lack of awareness when consulting with First Nations organizations and the communication challenges that arose. Through experience, they learned that recognizing and respecting these differences is crucial for effective communication. An illustrative example is provided where a conference call with First Nations clients led to a misunderstanding due to cultural differences in communication styles, particularly regarding the use of silence. The speaker suggests three strategies to mitigate such breakdowns: avoiding assumptions, asking open-ended questions to clarify cultural norms, and sharing the responsibility of adapting communication styles rather than expecting the minority culture to conform to the majority.

đŸ€ Fostering Collaboration Through Cultural Sensitivity

The speaker concludes by advocating for a collaborative approach to communication that involves mutual understanding and adaptation. They stress the importance of not expecting individuals from minority cultures to solely adapt to the majority's norms. Instead, they propose a balanced effort where both parties strive to comprehend each other's communication nuances and meet halfway. The speaker highlights that organizations that practice this philosophy not only experience fewer communication breakdowns but also foster an environment conducive to creativity. They invite listeners to share their thoughts on how culture influences communication in the workplace, suggesting that embracing diversity in communication can lead to innovative and effective teamwork.

play00:00

i've seen a lot of times where

play00:02

communication breakdowns

play00:03

have really just been related to

play00:06

underlying cultural

play00:07

differences you know we're all raised in

play00:10

a family and within a certain culture

play00:12

and we learn how to interact with one

play00:14

another based on the societal norms

play00:17

and sometimes when we don't understand

play00:19

that someone's someone else's

play00:21

communication norms are different from

play00:23

our own

play00:24

that's where we run into communication

play00:26

problems so today i want to talk

play00:28

about how cultural differences can

play00:31

impact communication

play00:32

and what we can do to ensure that we

play00:34

minimize the impact that this has on our

play00:36

ability to work well together

play00:42

so i've consulted extensively to first

play00:44

nations organizations

play00:47

and when i first started consulting

play00:51

to these organizations i did not at all

play00:54

understand or know

play00:55

the cultural differences and i didn't

play00:56

realize to what extent it

play00:58

impacted how people communicated and it

play01:01

led

play01:02

to communication challenges so despite

play01:05

being an expert in communication yes i

play01:07

still experience

play01:08

communication breakdowns at time times

play01:12

uh and so one of the things that i

play01:14

wanted to talk to you about

play01:15

to you about today was some of the

play01:17

lessons i learned through that journey

play01:19

because what i learned was that the more

play01:20

i could learn about those cultural

play01:22

differences and how they impacted how we

play01:24

communicated

play01:25

the more we were able to get around the

play01:27

differences so let me give you an

play01:29

example

play01:30

i was once on a conference call a bunch

play01:32

of people from montreal

play01:34

a bunch of people uh who are up north

play01:36

who are first nations clients

play01:38

and um someone from montreal asked a

play01:40

question

play01:41

and then there was dead silence on the

play01:43

line for a good period of time well

play01:46

over a minute it was an amount of time

play01:49

that makes most

play01:50

north americans extremely uncomfortable

play01:53

right we're not used to big

play01:54

pauses and big silences now

play01:57

because i've been consulting with first

play01:59

nations clients for a long time i was

play02:01

used to them at this point

play02:02

so i knew to just give space that they

play02:05

were thinking

play02:06

and they would speak when they're ready

play02:08

but what happened is that somebody else

play02:09

on the line from montreal

play02:11

who was not familiar with working with

play02:12

first nations client started saying

play02:14

hello hello hello are you there hello

play02:19

because they thought that we had a

play02:20

problem with the phone connection

play02:22

now had that been me when i had started

play02:24

consulting i would have done the exact

play02:26

same thing

play02:27

but i'd grown to learn some of the

play02:29

nuances in my cultural

play02:31

communication norms which are don't

play02:33

leave big long spaces

play02:35

is what's more typical versus some of

play02:37

these

play02:38

uh different cultural norms up north so

play02:40

there's three different things that we

play02:42

can do to help make sure

play02:44

that these different cultural

play02:45

differences in communication don't lead

play02:48

to breakdowns

play02:49

the first is don't make assumptions

play02:54

so often i see communication

play02:57

differences linked to culture as being

play02:59

viewed through a lens of

play03:01

a characteristic of the person so for

play03:04

instance

play03:04

this person isn't assertive enough or

play03:07

this person is too aggressive

play03:09

or uh this person isn't organized enough

play03:13

and when really you look at it sometimes

play03:14

it's those cultural norms that

play03:16

underlie how that person was raised in

play03:20

the culture they were raised in so be

play03:21

very sensitive to this if you're working

play03:23

with someone

play03:24

from a different culture don't assume

play03:26

anything about that person based on how

play03:28

they're communicating with you

play03:30

second and it's related to the first is

play03:33

ask

play03:34

questions the biggest way to get around

play03:36

those assumptions

play03:37

is to clarify them by asking open-ended

play03:41

questions the more you can understand

play03:44

about somebody else's cultural

play03:46

expectations the more

play03:48

you're going to be able to work

play03:49

collaboratively with them

play03:52

and then my third tip is don't expect

play03:55

the other person

play03:56

to do all of the work to adapt their

play03:58

style to yours and i see this a lot when

play04:00

there's a majority culture

play04:02

and a minority culture that there's

play04:04

often an expectation that the person in

play04:06

the minority culture has to adapt

play04:08

to the larger majority culture

play04:11

the problem here is extremely stifling

play04:14

imagine if you were suddenly asked to be

play04:16

somebody completely different

play04:17

from who you were raised to be and to

play04:19

come to communicate completely

play04:21

differently

play04:22

just because everyone around you is

play04:24

what's important here is that we all

play04:26

learn to take a step towards the other

play04:28

person so instead of there being an

play04:30

expectation on the other person to adapt

play04:32

what if you both looked at trying to

play04:34

understand one another's communication

play04:36

nuances

play04:37

and taking a step towards each other and

play04:39

kind of meeting in the middle

play04:41

and what i can tell you is that

play04:42

organizations who who embody this

play04:45

philosophy

play04:46

they're really the ones who have the

play04:48

most collaborative communication

play04:50

which leads to far fewer communication

play04:52

breakdowns that cost

play04:53

tons of time and money they're also the

play04:55

organizations that i

play04:57

see having the most creativity because

play04:59

in that middle ground

play05:01

as we all start to be able to shift our

play05:03

thinking that's where pure creativity

play05:05

lies

play05:06

so give it a try and i'd love to hear

play05:08

your thoughts on how

play05:10

culture impacts communication in the

play05:14

[Music]

play05:22

workplace
