himself Stephen King imagine a universe

where fear is the currency and Stephen

King is the billionaire Tycoon before

don't know how they used to entertain

children thanks to King chorophobia the

fear of clowns probably skyrocketed and

King has a knack for making even the

mundane things terrifying I mean if you

have a 1958 Plymouth Fury you should

probably keep an eye on it and let's not

Stephen King's influence in literature

is massive he's an author I've actually

just been getting into and really

enjoying uh but he is also a great

believer in the power of literature and

he's an Avid Reader who recommends books

to his fans I mean he even posted a top

10 over on good reads though he admitted

that any list like this is slightly

ridiculous on another day 10 different

titles might come to mind like the

Exorcist or All the Pretty Horses in

place of Blood Meridian but what the

hell I stand by these so these are the

10 books that Stephen King stands by now

I won't go through all of these but I

will point out a few details here so

number 10 we have the Lord of the Rings

by JRR tolken and in a separate list

Stephen King plays Sauron in his top 10

villains of all time so it's no

surprised to see his love for the series

here at number eight we have 1984 by

George or Orwell now King's own

dystopian tale from 1979 the lone walk

uh definitely has some influence in

there from Orwell with the story

following a group of contestants in a

walk-in competition in which there can

only be one winner and then at number

five is the hair of Harold Rue by Thomas

Williams now King actually dedicated his

1993 Story collection nightmares and

Dreamscapes to Williams and he described

the novel as one that he frequently

revisits having read it at least four or

five times and King appreciates the

novel's portrayal of a writer's life and

its House of mirrors type of structure

which he finds resonates with his own

understanding of what it means to be a

writer he also gives praise to its

truthful depiction of the complexities

and realities of Storytelling and then

at number three is Waters ship down by

Richard Adams there is something kind of

funny about the king of horror loving a

book about a bunch of bunnies I know if

you've read ship down it's not just

about a bunch of bunnies and in Stephen

King's number one spot we have Lord of

the Flies by William Golding now

obviously this one is a classic and of

course golding's exploration of like

human nature and societal breakdown kind

of resonates with King's own themes of

fear and survival now on other occasions

including a segment called what you read

in on The Late Show with Steven Colbert

Stephen King said his favorite book of

all time is Lonesome Dove by Larry

mcmurty he touches on the depth of this

classic Western and says that it is the

definitive Cowboy novel next up we have

George RR Martin now Georgie boy has

single-handedly taught millions that

it's perfectly normal to grow deep

emotional attachment to fictional

characters only to brutally sever those

attachments in the most unexpected ways

if there's one lesson we've all Learned

From A Song of Ice and Fire it's that no

character no matter how beloved is safe

from the author's ruthless pen I mean

everywhere now have trust issues

especially when it comes to wedding

invitations now Martin has said that a

reader lives A Thousand Lives before he

dies the man who never reads lives only

one I have lived a thousand lives and

I've Loved a thousand loves I've walked

on Distant Worlds and seen the end of

time because I read now as far as his

favorite book Martin has said that he

has read thousands of books since he was

a kid and he he can't choose just one

but that he has a long list of favorites

and that's fair enough I that's very

relatable it's extremely hard to choose

just one now one series he repeatedly

brings up as being one of his favorites

is the dying Earth by Jack Vance if you

haven't heard of these books you need to

become aware of them the stories of the

dying Earth series are set in the

distant future at a point when the sun

is almost exhausted humanity is near a

Extinction and technology has largely

been forgotten with magic now having

taken its place the moon has disappeared

and the sun is in danger of burning out

at any time often flickering as if it's

about to go out before shining again

mutated animals and monsters roam the

world along with the scraps of humanity

that are trying to survive and Powerful

Wizards controlling spells developed in

ages past one thing that's so

interesting is how the magic here has

loose links to the science of old and

advanced mathematics is treated like

Arcane lore these stories are very

strange in the best of ways and with the

world dying and all there is a lack of

Hope to the books but they also have a

lot of humor to them as well they're

definitely worth checking out not only

did Martin say that he returns to his

favorite Vance books every few years but

after Vance's death in 2013 Martin paid

tribute with an anthology entitled songs

of the D Earth which featured original

stories with writers like Neil gaimon

Robert silberg and Mike Resnik now he

also talked about another one of his

favorite series in an exclusive

interview just 11 months ago over on

Dominic Noble's Channel I highly

recommend watching the entire interview

because it was very enjoyable and here

he talked about one of his favorite

books ever being nine princes in Amber

by Roger zelazny now this is a 10 book

series but really it's like five books

split into two series uh and Martin says

that the the first five books are the

most important when Carl Corey wakes up

in a New York City hospital he has no

idea who he is or where he came from his

investigations lead him to discover that

he is really Prince Corwin of the world

of Amber the world he currently lives in

is just a shadow of Amber the true World

Corwin is one of nine possible future

rulers of Amber and now he will have to

find a way to prove that he is worthy of

the throne he just has to defeat his

brother's vast armies first so if you're

going to read any then you should read

those five books I've only read the

first two books just recently but this

is such a great series I can't wait to

read more so I mean the books are

actually pretty short because this is

like a bindup of all 10 of them and it's

about the size of one Stormlight Archive

book by Brandon Sanderson okay we need

to talk about Neil Gaiman he incredible

author right I mean he's the author

behind American Gods good Omens the

Sandman Coraline ocean at the end of the

lane and one of my favorites the

graveyard book he's basically a legend

in his own right he doesn't exactly need

an introduction but feel free to let me

know your favorite Neil ging book in the

comments because I know there's some I

haven't read yet and I feel I'm worried

that I'm missing out on something

amazing the editor Aaron hickin for his

book shop and his website one grand

books asked people what 10 books they

would bring with them if they were

marooned on a desert island and Neil

giman shared his top 10 which is very

helpful because not many authors share

their definitive top 10 so that's what

we're going to be looking at here in his

number one spot is Shadow and Claw by

Jean wolf and he praised this book by

saying it is one of the best science

fiction novels of the last century very

high praise uh now this choice is

actually a bit of a cheat because this

is actually two books in one the shadow

of the torturer and the claw of the

conciliator set a million years in the

future on a world with a dying son not

to be mistaken with the dying Earth

books by Jack Vance here the Moon is

green and daylight is red and rotting

jungles Circle the waste of the world it

follows the story of sarian an

apprentice of the torturer Guild in the

decaying Citadel who shows Mercy to a

prisoner that he's fallen in love with

rather than being killed for his crime

he's exiled given an ancient sword and

set to be an executioner he ends up

undertaking a journey through this

incredibly bizarre world now I've read

Shadow and Claw it is one of the most

atmospheric books that I've read one of

the strangest books I've read and I'm

very happy that Neil Gaiman put this in

his number one because I feel like the

book of the new son really does not get

enough love and there's elements in this

book that were an inspiration for me as

well that may have bled through into the

series that I'm currently writing I'm so

glad to see Neil game in recommending it

now he isn't the only one who has

praised book of the new Sun Publishers

Weekly has said the series is a

masterpiece of Science Fiction and that

it is comparable in importance to the

major works of tolken and Lewis and

Ursula Kaya gwin author of the earth sea

cycle has called the series a

masterpiece if you haven't read book of

the new Sun yet then you you should now

Neil gaiman's second favorite book is L

in the Mist by hope Merle now this one

is pretty much a forgotten classic from

1926 Gaiman has described it as one of

the finest fantasy novels in the English

language even calling it a little golden

Miracle of a book now I have only ever

heard good things about this one I

really want to get to it myself soon the

story is set in the fictional town of L

in the Mist which lies near the two

rivers the Doppel and the dowel now the

town once had close ties to the land of

fairy which lies just beyond the

debatable Hills but in the present day

its inhabitants deny the existence of

fairy and Outlaw anything associated

with it including the consumption of

fairy fruit now the plot revolves around

the mayor of L in the Mist whose world

is turned upside down when his son

consumes a fairy fruit and begins

exhibiting strange and troubling

Behavior now he has several other highly

acclaimed fantasy stories on here like

Jonathan strange and Mr norl by Susanna

Clark and Lord of Light by Roger alazne

overall this is a really solid list and

quite a few of these I still want to get

to myself moving on to Patrick rothus

now just like with Martin rothus has

turned the act of waiting into a fine

art you would think that his fan base is

like the most patient people on Earth

but but that isn't exactly the case with

the King killer Chronicle rothus has

captivated readers with his lyrical Pros

his intricate worldl buing and the

seemingly endless wait for the series

conclusion you know Roth's presence over

fantasy is kind of like an everm moving

moon it's captivating mysterious

appearing and then disappearing leaving

us wanting more jokes aside when Patrick

rothus writes he is a brilliant writer I

mean I guess it's the fact that he

revises his writing over and over and

over again so he is a brilliant reviser

the man's Pros is beautiful and he he

has written the best like music I have

ever read in fantasy just the entire

theme of Music in the king killer

Chronicle and how it's a story about

telling stories uh it it's wonderful

there's multiple stories within stories

in the king killer Chronicle anyways

it's no wonder that one of Patrick rus'

favorite books is The Last Unicorn by

Peter S beagle he cites the incredible

language of the story to be one of his

favorite elements along with the

smoothness of the narrative the story

follows the Journey of a unicorn who

explores the world in search for answers

to what happened to the rest of her kind

The Last Unicorn is a beautiful classic

I grew up watching the movie adaptation

if anybody remembers that which is

wonderful as well but I highly recommend

reading the book now Patrick rothfus has

given a long list of recommendations

over on his blog and on Goodreads with

titles including the riddle master books

by Patricia a mckillop he's also a big

fan of The Chronicles of Amber by Roger

alazne and the Sandman slim books by

Richard Cadre now rothfus has also

mentioned that he's a big fan of Ursula

kwin's Masterpiece the Earth sea cycle

and he considers it a significant

influence on his own writing which I

feel like you can clearly see with the

naming magic system in the king killer

Chronicle and even just the basic

premise of a young talented boy

attending a magic school and growing

into a powerful wizard all while

struggling with their own identity and

various problems obviously the two works

are very different from each other as

well but I can definitely see the

influence from Earth sea now rothfus is

also a massive fan of Terry pratchet and

his dis World Books however it seems

that one of his absolute favorite series

of all time is The Dresden Files by Jim

Butcher in interviews rothus has praised

the books and mentioned how he keeps

coming back to the series more than any

other and I mean I can understand why

the dresen files are so much fun it

follows private investigator and wizard

Harry Dresden as he pursues various

investigations around Chicago's

Supernatural underbelly the dress in

files if you haven't read it it is the

king of urban fantasy and really it's

one of those series that just keeps

getting better with each book if you're

a fan of gritty and Darkly humorous

fantasy then you're no doubt a fan of

Joe abomi abber crom's writing style is

kind of like a punch to the gut it's

brutal and unflinching and kind of

exhilarating he's taken the classic

fantasy tropes put them through a meat

grinder and serve them up with a

sardonic grin abber cromie has made it

clear that in his worlds there are no

true heroes thanks to abomi we've

learned to appreciate the finer points

of treachery and cynicism and viw the

greats Like A Song of Ice and Fire by

George RR Martin honestly if I was to

choose one author besides Martin to

finish A Song of Ice and Fire I would

probably choose abber cromie now fans of

Joe also know that he has a tremendous

amount of love for westerns abber cromie

mentions he doesn't read as much as he

used to but he was blown away by

Lonesome Dove by Larry mcmurdy I keep

seeing this book being mentioned by

authors and by fantasy readers that I

know and now I really want to read it

I'm going to read Lonesome Dove you can

hold me accountable the big nowhere by

James Elroy is another one of abber

cromie's favorites and this one is a

crime Noir drama taking place in the

1950s in Los Angeles and this book has

been described as being very Bleak and

focused on its complex characters

characters that you root for at times

then despise other times which sounds

very similar to abber crom's style of

characterization now over on abber cr's

YouTube channel he does a bookshelf tour

and he talks about a lot of his favorite

books in that video moving on to the man

who writes books faster than most of us

can read them oh wait I already talked

about Stephen King Brandon Sanderson his

productivity is the stuff of Legends

inspiring awe and envy I mean authors

everywhere have learned that compared to

Sanderson they might be slacking off on

the other hand his readers have the

delightful problem of having too many

books to read Sanderson my shelves can't

hold many more books you need to stop

this now obviously Sanderson is known

for his intricate magic systems and his

complex World building and all of that

he's one of the most widely recognized

and mainstream modern fantasy authors in

the genre now dragons Bane by Barbara

Hamley holds a really special place in

sanderson's heart it's one of the first

books that he read that actually got him

into reading fantasy the world would be

a much sadder place if Sanderson never

read that book and never got into

fantasy now unsurprisingly Sanderson has

read and re recommended a ton of fantasy

books and you can actually go to a

website called most recommended. comom

uh which has a page where you can see

all 122 books that Sanderson has

recommended now obviously I'm not going

to cover all of those but I will

highlight some of sanderson's favorites

now he has mentioned that dragon prins

by Melanie Ron is one of his favorite

books of all time now what Melanie Ron

did back in the80s with dragon Prince

was take all the awesome High fantasy

element

that make an epic story and mixed it

with the conventions of a romance novel

and this is something that was

groundbreaking at the time the core of

this story is the relationship between

Rohan and shaid the passion that draws

them together and all the dangers and

obstacles that try to block them now

Sanderson is also a huge fan of the

Dragon Riders of P series by an mcaffrey

he also recommends guy Gabriel K

specifically toana he says is a wondrous

work now I am a huge fan of guy Gabriel

Kay I think he is such an underrated

author and more people need to read his

books he also recommends anything by

Daniel Abraham under any of his various

pen names and he is a big fan of Robin

hobb's Realm of the elderlings now as

far as an absolute favorite novel

Sanderson has mentioned that Terry

pratchet is one of his favorite authors

of all time and his favorite disc world

book is the truth he says as a writer

and one who likes to explore the nature

of the truth truth in his Works a novel

that deals with someone trying to

publish a newspaper in a fantasy world

mixed philosophy and laughs in the way

that only pratchet can however guards

guards is the book where I suggest

people new to pratchet start now I

actually haven't read the truth yet but

now I am very interested in starting it
