but today we're headed in the 13th
century to meet a young girl with a
tragic story who lived during the
Scottish hordes of independence Margery
Bruce
[Music]
marjory Bruce was the eldest daughter of
Robert the Bruce the King of Scots by
his first wife a noblewoman Isabella of
Mothe Amara was born in 1296
Marjorie's parents were said to have
been very much in love but sadly her
mother passed away quickly after
Marjorie was born dying at the young age
of 19 it seems likely that Marjorie's
care was handed to one of her father's
sisters either Muriel or Christina
at least until Robert the Bruce
remarried in 1302 then he married a
young 13 year old courtier named
Elizabeth debur
[Music]
the daughter of one of King Edward the
first most prominent Anglo Irish
supporters on the 27th of March Robert
the Bruce was crowned King of Scots by
Isabella Macduff at Scone and Marjorie
aged nine became princess of Scotland
however three months after the
coronation in June
her father was defeated at the Battle of
Methven and he sent his female relatives
and Ward north to safety
but by the end of June after avoiding
capture twice they were caught by the
Earl of Rosse who handed them over to
the English as punishment King Edward
the first sent his hostages to different
places in England Marjorie and her aunt
Christina were sent to separate convent
Queen Elizabeth was placed under house
arrest and her aunt Marion Macduff one
of her father's supporters in the woman
that had crowned him King and scone were
imprisoned in cages for years exposed to
public viewers spectacles Mary's cage
was at Roxbury Castle and Isabel's was
at Berwick castle
King Edward also had a cage built for
Marjorie at the Tower of London but
reconsidered
when sent young Marjorie to a convent in
whatten instead
Edward the first died on July 7 1307 and
was succeeded by his son Edward the
second who continued to hold Marjorie as
a prisoner in the convent for about
seven more years and 1314 Marjorie was
finally released possibly in exchange
for English Nobles that had been
captured at the Scottish victory of the
Battle of Bannockburn Marjorie was
escorted back to Scotland under the
escort of Walter Stewart who king Edward
had awarded the adolescent princess's
hand in marriage to
two years after her marriage on March
2nd 13 16 a heavily pregnant Marjorie
was riding when her horse was startled
and it threw her to the ground
Marjorie was seriously injured and she
went into premature labor
being delivered of a son Robert by
cesarean section at Paisley Abbey but
sadly she lived only a few more hours
dying at 19 years old the same as her
mother she was buried at Paisley Abbey
and to this day the knock near where
Marjorie reputedly fell is still marked
despite not surviving to see her son
grow Robert eventually succeeded his
childless uncle david ii of scotland as
king robert ii in 1371 and Marjorie's
descendants include the House of Stuart
and all their successors on the throne
