we will look at Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical idea of eternal return and see
how Kundera challenges this idea we will explore the concept of lightness and weight and how it
relates to the characters in the novel this is The Unbearable Lightness of being by Milan Kundera
[Music]
Milan Kundera was born in the Czech city of Brno in 1929. He went into exile in France in
1975 and has lived there ever since His works were banned in the Czech Republic until the
late 1980s although he personally claims that his works belong to French literature he's generally
regarded as an important novelist for both Czech and French literature there have been several
calls for him to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature but this has yet to happen The
Unbearable Lightness of Being was first published in 1984. it follows the lives of two women two men
and the dog in the late 1960s and early 1970s it is set during the Prague spring up to the
invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact the novel unfolds in several European cities including
Prague Paris Zurich and Geneva it is the story of an unfaithful love by Tomas and his wife Tereza
and how their lives are affected by the Soviet occupation there are four main characters in this
novel five if you count the dog Tomas is a surgeon and intellectual and a womanizer who's always
looking for a new affair for him sex and love are not connected they are two separate things
while he has sex with many women he only truly loves his wife Tereza
after the invasion he and his wife flee to Zurich but they eventually returned to Prague
he loses his job as a surgeon after refusing to retract an article that led the police to believe
he was a dissident Tomas also has a son called Simon as previously mentioned Tereza is the wife
of Tomas she is the photographer and later becomes involved in photojournalism during the occupation
although she struggles with Tomas' infidelity she doesn't hold it against him she has always
waited for someone like Tomas to come into her life but his repeated Affairs force her
to keep waiting since her mother was very open about her bodily functions Tereza perceives the
body as something disgusting and shameful Sabina is Tomas' main lover she spends her life as the
ultimate illustration of lightness she rejects the idea of kitsch and resists the limits forced upon
her by both her upbringing and the Communist party this struggle is expressed in her paintings she
was in a constant search for freedom and this freedom finally left her isolated in America
as her life is a long series of betrayals she often wonders what her life could have been
without them Franz is sabina's lover a professor and idealist from Geneva
he falls in love with Sabina and eventually ruins his marriage because of it he has dedicated his
life to books and science overall he is a kind and compassionate man who could also be termed
a dreamer the dog Karenin is also an important part of the novel Karenin is named after Alexei
Karenin the husband in Tolstoi's Anna Karenina although Karenin is female her name is masculine
Karenin struggles with change and only becomes more content when Tomas and Tereza move to the
countryside towards the end of the novel as the title of the novel already suggests lightness and
its counterpart heaviness are the central theme it is accompanied by Nietzsche's philosophy of
eternal return as well as other themes such as the Soviet occupation and sex and love there are
also two very prominent recurring symbols in the novel a bowler hat and books lightness is mainly
represented by Tomas and Sabina while heaviness is represented by Teresa and France lightness
refers to a particular philosophical question that deals with the understanding of existence
and the human condition as it is contrasted with eternal return an idea that explores the concept
that all events in life return infinitely it shows that life is fleeting and lacks meaning what's
interesting is that Kundera rejects the idea of eternal return and uses his novel as a tool to
explain his own philosophy the opening sentence of the novel reads as follows the idea of eternal
return is a mysterious one and nature has often perplexed other philosophers with it to think
that everything recurs as we once experienced it and that the recurrence itself recurs ad infinitum
what does this mad myth signify in short this means that a life that would be repeated eternally
is of a heavy nature while a life that occurs only once is weightless and therefore meaningless
according to Kundera all life is meaningless it's also important to note that Kundera doesn't see
heaviness or weight as something purely negative or lightness as something purely positive the
burden of heaviness is what gives our lives meaning while a life without meaning is unbearable
which leads us to the title of the novel this is also what makes Tomas and Sabina light characters
they live a life of fleeting encounters that don't have any significance the sexual encounters are
meaningless and Tomas sees his love for Teresa as a burden making it something heavy while Kundera
is supposed to eternal return he also sees it as the only possible way to achieve true happiness
Teresa's heaviness is exemplified by her belief in love and commitment for her sex cannot exist
without love which convinces her that Tomas cannot truly love her if he is always looking for other
sexual encounters she even goes so far as to see if she can relieve herself by having sex
with another man But ultimately she's unable to see love and sex as two separate entities Franz
is constantly searching for heaviness to give his life purpose he desperately tries to find this
meaning by seeking new relationships or going to protests but his attempts are all in vain his life
is meaningless here is the quote that illustrates how Franz searches for heaviness in his life
the fantasy of the Grand March that Franz was so intoxicated by is the political kitsch
joining leftists of all times and tendencies the grand March is the splendid march on the road to
brotherhood equality justice happiness it goes on and on obstacles not withstanding for obstacles
there must be if the March is to be the Grand March it highlights how Franz sees this Grand
March as something meaningful but since kundera calls it political kitsch it is actually the
opposite of meaningful power and politics are ever present in the novel as the novel is set during
the Prague spring a period in which the people of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic pushed for
political liberalization and the subsequent Soviet occupation in August 1968 it has a significant
impact on the lives of the characters and even reflects the characters themselves Tereza for
example can be seen as a personification of Czechoslovakia and Tomas as the Soviet Union
there is also a recurring dream sequence in the novel that highlights the power dynamic
between Tomas and Teresa I was at a large indoor swimming pool there were about 20 of us all women
we were naked and had to march around the pool there was a basket hanging from the ceiling
and a man standing in the basket the man wore a broad-brimmed hat shading his face but I could see
it was you you kept giving us orders shouting at us we had to sing as we marched sing and do knee
bands if one of us did a bad knee bend he would shoot her with a pistol and she would fall dead
into the pool which made everybody laugh and sing even louder you never took your eyes of us and
the minutes we did something wrong he would shoot the pool was full of corpses floating just below
the surface and I knew I lacked the strength to do the next knee Bend and you were going to shoot me
I mentioned at the beginning of this section that a bowler hat is a recurring motif it is used as a
symbol for eternal return Sabina has inherited the hat from her grandfather what is interesting about
this motif is that its meaning is fluid while it is used as a symbol of power and violence during
a sex scene between Tomas and Sabina it can also stand for Sabina's individual nature there's even
a scene where Sabina wears the hat in front of Franz and he is simply confused by its meaning
books also have a significant place in the novel like everything else in the story it is linked to
eternal return it is no coincidence that Teresa's favourite novel is Anna karanina in Anna karanina
the setting at the beginning of the novel is also the setting at the end of the novel Kundera does
the same in The Unbearable Lightness of Being books are also used as a sign of comfort for
Teresa when she has a sexual encounter with a stranger she is comforted by the side of
his library thinking that someone with such a library couldn't possibly hurt her this novel
was great the philosophical ideas presented were thought-provoking and interesting Kundera has
managed to provide a fascinating philosophical discussion within a beautifully written work of
fiction it has interesting characters a vivid and dreamlike style that stimulates one's
imagination while reading and occasionally makes one stop and think it also offers an
insight into the political turmoil of the late 1960s and early 1970s without overwhelming the
reader it's a great novel that deserves a place among the very best novels of the 20th century
