made time to join me here and trust me
i'm really excited for today's session
because i'm having with me an individual
who had um
less a second class lower from um from
his undergrad and was able to secure a
fully funded scholarship and he reached
out to me
in the us and he reached out to me to
share his story and asked how he made it
through so that's all that we're going
to do here so no long talk okay so let's
proceed but before we proceed please if
you haven't subscribed kindly do so hit
the subscribe button and turn on the

in the comment section and i'll be glad
to respond to you so tada let's process
[Music]
all right guys so welcome back to this
session so um as you can see i'm really
happy for this session because i'm
having this with me this um i'm very
humble gentleman who just i mean who
just reached out to me to kind of i mean
be a blessing to this channel and
um
we will take it from there so i'll let
him introduce himself then we pick it
from there so he's very uh he's not
hyper like you so let's take it like
that yeah so let's go
hello everyone my name is
my master's in computer science
i'm in my second year final semester
when all of you
need to help anyone around the world
who's supposed to be willing to
communicate so this master's or come
from school
canada so um
that's how i
came across this channel i wanted to
share everything with you guys so yeah
yeah did you see you you'll be seeing me
across
the channel for a couple of times
because that's right a lot of
information to share with you
and i want you to say
thank you thank you william thank you
william so um so epic rundown so he's
doing his master's in computer science
at the university of central arkansas
and um more importantly as you can see
in the description he had i mean um um a
sk class lower just to kind of spice you
up and also didn't take the gre or i
mean the the gmat okay so that just by
the way so let's take it from there so
see when did you begin the process and
how would you go about it when i mean
when did you begin the process and how
did you i mean take it from there yeah
so um i i began the process in 2018 when
i was in my third year undergraduate
degree so as of 2015 before i came to us
i knew about the school i believe
undergrad and everything i didn't know
much about the current business because
in 2018 i i started i third my process
which is school selection because i
wanted to clean my schools before
so that i can accept that
so if i'm to get you right you began
from school selection before graduation
so that i will know the schools that i
want to apply
they have the application fees their
requirements and
so now once i'm in school i know what i
need to get
because one thing i realize is once you
graduate in school for one year two
years it's difficult to get references
and
transcript and stuff so i wanted to
prepare ahead before i graduate so
and i wanted to know every school has
its own i mean
most of them share the same requirements
the every school assistant so based on
the requirements that they share i was
searching for schools based on a setting
criteria and some some setting key stuff
one is was that the school
accepts all the school requirements to
evaluate my transcript before
they accept me for for my application
and eventually there's a school um i
said um require ielts for my english
proficiency because i'm from ghana and
our mode of education is english and i
use english when writes any behavior
again yeah so
i i i
plan to get a proficiency leader from
university so that i use that
of english
so in school because i i yield to years
or maybe yes i was not going to apply he
because so i i don't know it's helped me
to narrow down screw searches
so
and
one thing to and how i wonder about the
school circus is um if you look at his
channel he talked about how to search
for school switch so it's the reason why
even
which is searching for ust speak
invested by state and then searching for
the investors amazing
i checked their requirements for the
program the very school requirements and
yeah the requirements for international
students because we are international
students and our application process is
different our everything is different so
i wanted to make sure that so that's how
can i say from my schools
using these keywords it helped me to
build my skills so before i graduated i
knew a school that i wanted to apply to
and the requirements that they the
things that they need for my application
and everything so
as by the time i graduated i had
[Music]
yeah
that's amazing so that's interesting um
just the chipping this so um basically
he went through i mean if you can check
my previous videos i'll put a
description up there um that i mean
that's why that's why what made him to
even get in touch with me because we
kind of have similar pattern which we
use to scout for schools and just like
as he said i also had my schools before
i've been completing my four-year
bachelor's degree so yeah um after i
mean compiling the list of those seven
schools what happened after submitting
the application what happened next i
want to share with them what happened
so um
um
so
from january 2019 i started getting
rejections
i'll get one
[Music]
and if if you don't get any scholarships
it's difficult to hear this at some
point yeah so maybe
that i i didn't say that i would say
that for i mean uh for scholarship
seekers admission is going to quote
nothing because um you got an issue with
no funding i mean it becomes a burden
yeah
so because i i knew the u.s embassy
would then
pay thirty thousand dollars a year
so i knew
all the effort of putting into this
thing has just gone down the dream
because it wasn't easy i started
preparing in 2018
i started preparing preparing in 2018
and
2016. 2016. i started programming 265.
working so hard for two years and then
finishing an applying and you didn't get
any 10 out of it he didn't get anything
out of it so
it's it was very it was a very difficult
moment for me
because after all the
paying application fees so so so how
many rejections can we say you had him
oh how many rejections i had six
rejections and one
nice one so that is that
yes so
that is his story so when he began he
had i mean sex rejection straight
and one admission with no funding now my
story is what
did you do different at this time you
know people say that or don't give up
keep on i mean it's going to pay off
it's going to work out but the thing is
that sometimes your pattern or your path
you're taking this but it's not correct
or it's wrong so my question then is
what did you do differently at this time
around
so um thank you for the question and
it's one of one of the most important
parts so
once everything happened i just sat down
and then i just tried to analyze
whatever
and
i realized that um
applying to the school directly without
anybody name you he is it kind of makes
everything very hard it's like one
dimension there's no one there to
actually vouch for you or actually
so
i was just sitting down like very sad
like very hard working because i had
pita
i had invested every single thing that i
i need to do
plan very well everything i didn't work
out so
i was there and then i had this tour
that you know
what i'm going to do is i'm going to
search for professors who are looking
for students to work with
because most of the time professors have
research grants and they're looking for
students
most of these grants they give you full
funding yes so the approaches yeah let
me let me let me clarify this else
people might be confused i know my
people so here here the approach is
going to describe is that he now began
to search for professors who are looking
for students and who and those
professors are having funding available
to sponsor them they get it so that is
what i mean the approach is going to
what is going to use and there are some
schools
that you are applying to that you don't
need supervisor that case is different
his own he really is supervisor that's
not the case
so um i didn't need any progress now i
was just looking for it i was just
looking for a
a research program or a research program
yeah can an assistantship to a
scholarship to government but because i
know i can't afford
the cost of attendance in years because
it's very expensive so how did you go
about it yeah
so um what i did was i went back to the
approach that we talked about for
searching screws step by step
which he has already done on his channel
and i think one is second or second
video on this youtube channel
so i picked the states again i go to the
schools again so what i did i want
so i just went to all the professors in
the in the department their research and
i was looking for a reason that
interests me
as any of the professors
is basically the professor's being
respected actually interesting
so i really i just flashed through what
they are doing in their research areas
and some of the people that are working
if i have any interesting ideas for them
then their name and email and one thing
is most of them have their personal
website name yeah their profile page on
the screens for party page so you just
go they read about them and if you want
to find the information that they are
looking for students to work with it's
on their personal website and you can
only find it on the faculty
page on this department's website that's
right so if you go to if you go to their
profile and the faculties page on the
buttons website you see the link to that
personal website if you go to their
personal website you find that
information that they are looking for
students
so that's our camera i wonder about me
so
i want to when then the current
professor i'm working with i went to his
profile so i picked the step by step i
go to the school i go to the properties
if i find a result interesting then i
just reach out to the professor
yeah it's very important because one you
you have to make sure that the research
that you are you are reading about
content just because the professor has
run doesn't mean you have to just email
the professor
you may not have interest in what the
proposal is doing and if you
just reach out just for for funding say
you want to just because you want to
come here you're just reaching out to
any professor
you might not enjoy the work that you
have in my videos or something you might
use your scholarship so it's very
critical that you find
a reset area or professor some resources
that you're actually interested in
before reaching out it is going to help
you because he might ask you some
questions and you might not even know
how to answer but if you have an
interest in it it's going to make
everything simpler so that's how that
was my next output which is how to
process this yeah yeah so um to to to
kind of um be of help to them so what is
what motivated you i would like you i
mean share how you communicated your
interest but what really motivated you i
mean because
uh per your prayer results and if you
compare the standard it's normally 275
plus which is like skin class lower and
some schools consider 3.0 uh what what
inspired you what made you not to
digress we'll come to the research
aspect but what inspired you to keep on
going
so the thing was uh i had this i wanted
to do my master's after school
when i started being my master's i
wanted to commend him in the u.s for me
that the us was my main focus and i i
felt i've given so much to the point
that i can't just give up like that
so i have to keep pushing and keep
trying
and no give up so another day the only
thing is the goal is the same but i have
to just change the strategy of
going about it so instead of using the
same strategy i have to change the
strategy
what did i do
so that's how come i could i did okay
let me just
reach out to people looking for it
and the good thing about that approach
is
you might get a scholarship even before
you get admission and once you get a
scholarship you automatically get me
you're not going to be rejected
really let's clarify that so i was even
going to go there but you've already
mentioned it so he secured an assurance
of assassinship or funding before
submitting application to the schools i
mean former uh um and doing the schools
form application and put it away so
how were you able to communicate your
research interests then also how did you
when about your email structure
just compress that and summarize that
for us how are you able to communicate
your interest to the professor and also
ensure you keep
in touch with him as i always say at a
reasonable interval
to get that funding that's such a
competitive funding without gre where i
mean without let me say a high cwa as
people presume what made you stand out
how do you do about it yeah
so one key thing i'll say is um i i want
to go here i spoke with my professor and
one thing that i realized he was talking
about perseverance because um research
is not for anyone
if if you're not very like determined
very very impressive you can never do it
so and hiring people who are actually
committed and
that is very key to them because people
hire you and you come and you don't
deliver they've wasted money so they're
very particular about that so
the key thing was i found my professor i
went to his website and i saw that he
was looking for students to work with so
what i did was um
the subject of here i i drafted an email
but the key thing about email emailing
the prophecy is to subject
a subject of your email because when
someone opens it so i have a gmail up or
and the professor opens his um he's
wired
on his computer the first thing he sees
is the submit of your email which is
very very important again depend on
whether you're going to get a reply or
not so the subject is very very key
and then the the content sometimes the
subnet alone can you get your life
but if you don't if you don't take care
of your subject very well you're not
going to get any reply and the second
thing is how you intro how you actually
address the professor you can't just
when type hi
hi his second you know mr whatever he's
a professor who is actually any so you
can do a high doctor extending his last
name
and then the first paragraph is
introduce yourself who you are
you are done with school why you are
reaching out to your professor you come
and talk about a little bit about what
you've done and then you come to the
main reason why you are originally
so for example i i told him that i saw
an association that he was looking for
students to work ready and i think i
have interest in his riches his research
area and i've heard some of his
favorites
i would love to contribute what what he
is doing is what is this research yeah
so the first thing you want to prophesy
is you want an attention or you want to
reply if you don't go and send a long
email because they don't have time to
read it it should be a concise
straight to the point email
well addressed to the person because the
first thing is you want to get a
response
from the professor so sometimes they are
so busy that they might not even see you
but once you send their first email
try and then send a reminder at a
reasonable time maybe three or four days
if you don't hear back just try and send
a reminder sometimes you must kept skip
them because you have a lot of believer
first question session like you have to
teach a teacher class you really
have meetings like apply for grants and
all those that he also have families to
take care of them so sometimes escapes
them
you
you have to find a way of sending a
reminder to them the remainder should be
a short reminder
reminding them that you send them an
earlier email but maybe escape them and
you're listening a reminder just to make
sure so the email the most important
part of the invoice
is is a circuit and one key thing is you
have to show you know how you are
determined to actually
join the group
like you have to be you have to show
them the determination and how you you
want to join because they are looking
for people who are very determined he
don't give up
so
for example the reason i'm talking about
the subject is how i go about my
acceptance i talk about prospective
student the year that i'm trying to
apply for so i was i was trying to apply
for spring and 20.
i was trying to apply for spring 20
2020 so my subject was prospective
student spring 2020 and i added a column
and i ended up interested in joining a
research group
and i did a little bit of research and
then added the research group's name
into a bracket at the last part so
once the email goes he knows that this
is someone who's specific john yes who
wants to join his research group and
that you specify the reason why you are
writing the
subject
the
[Music]
[Music]
the subject is very key and the key
thing is your email shouldn't be generic
just saying in the same water progress i
know you sit down and then read about
the prophecies right
it's name and then draft your email
especially the
the introduction is very very important
how you address your professor you can't
just go and send high school yeah how
your professor
is lastly for high doctor his last name
and as i said the most important thing
about email is a subject
yeah
yeah so i mean just we've been shipping
this some people just uh
copy the email they sent to one
professor to your to the extent that
sometimes they even forget to change the
name of the professors i mean if
something will just i mean put it in the
trash and just find myself wanting so
guys so that is i mean we are supposed
scripts i'll give you a ga
congratulations even proud to in
submitting the application so guys so
that is that doesn't mean that we
understand the professors
okay so unless and i'll let him i mean
give us his general tips or his last and
i mean last tips or advice for we all to
kind of learn from his experience and i
believe we will be good to go so
yeah um so
so just just to retrieve further i
thought i've talked about it
it's very the process the expressions of
contacting successful u.s are giving it
to other people that tried it into it
one person that i know um she said she
would be professors were who are
actually looking for them just using the
email from one that i i
go back they come back to you so one one
advice i would say is but you don't you
should you shouldn't be biting them
once you send it at least you should
give minimum three days ago or four days
represent a reminder you
don't want to copy this and just send a
reminder that you send them
for example i was in ghana right and in
ghana and we are six hours ahead of the
use
and
the timing was very important because
most of the time during the day after
evenings don't get time to check that
most of the time the only
um as i was saying i scheduled my emails
to be sent early in the morning so that
once they come to the office your email
will be on top of the emails that you
receive but if you send it during the
day around in the evenings or they get a
lot of emails these will be at the
bottom don't get time to spread it
so the timing of your email is very
important so as i said the subject of
your name is very critical because
it talks about why you're contacting the
professor the subject is very important
the second part is the content of your
your first email to your professor is to
get the attention
once we get our attention you have to
convince him why
he
you have to convince him be persistent
in replying your emails whatever he does
he or she tells you to do if you're
sensitive
assistant because
i i i did the same thing with the one
professor at westminster university and
she told me the same thing she said
she agreed to do a skype call with me
because of how i was very consistent and
he likes that determination so it's it's
very very important because you're
looking for people who don't quit
because listen it's not for anyone
because it works but you have to be very
particularly very intentional
how you send it the timing the subject
and then the content you shouldn't go
and send a loan email to a professor
you're fake you you're not going to
better relax so just be a shot you know
who you are why are your contacts
straight to the point
straight to your point and then because
the key is you are trying to get the
person's respiratory once you get a
reply you can actually grow up from
there so
the key thing is the subject as i said
perspective and prospective students the
year that you want to go to the school
for example i wanted to go in 2020 so it
was prospective to the 2020 column and
then i added interested in joining a
reset group so once the email goes into
his inbox he says okay this is a
prospective movement work with me
so it will actually push into a once he
replaces it you introduce yourself who
you are you're done in school
and you read advice this or your
research and you have an interest in it
you love to join
if he's if he's looking for students to
work with sometimes you might even see
it on the side but even if you see on
there on the outside that like this is
the result
of them maybe they might have a grandpa
maybe they don't have time to upgrade
their website with the information so
just sending that enough email will
specific email to that professor
everyone should talk
the key thing is you introduce yourself
when you come and talk about
why what you are contacting which is
interesting gender reasoning you have to
talk about the research area that the
person is working
which means you've actually done a
research and you know what the person is
talking about not any generic email so
that's that's that's my
advice for you so the key thing is
number one the subject of your email is
very very important
it's very very important because for
example my professor that i recognize
sometimes it doesn't write anything is
in in his ego but he puts everything in
the subject because that's what you're
going to see first so once you do that
here the timing or when you send the
email is very very important make sure
you send it early in the mornings check
your time zone in the u.s time zone then
schedule the emails to be sent in the us
time zones so
um
there's a lot to share there's a lot to
share but we're trying to kind of um
um i mean break them into session so
guys so this is for today's session i
mean how he had an um funny before
admission um with a sky class low i know
g r e no g but he didn't take any test
um i think but you did the worst
evaluation right
yes um i did the worst evaluation
because i have got my scholarship
so there was a condition if you remember
the phase that i was talking about i
said if your school accepts words i'm
not going to apply that's true the
school is taking anything about you know
yet i'm not going to apply so right it's
made me cut down a lot of speech because
right so um guys so that is his story
and i'm sure you're going to apply to
yours pick out the ones that you think
will help you to write your own story
because at the end of the day the
destination might be the same by the
path we all
we will all take will be different okay
and i still had admission and finally
without being contacting any professor
so they're not saying that it is
strictly for you to kind of reach out to
these men if it's needed you do so if
it's not you then don't worry okay so
stay tuned and i'll be bringing away
videos on i mean
this whole process and also the life
abroad after you get here what you have
to i mean how you navigate your way
through so if you haven't subscribed
kindly do so subscribe and i mean ask
your questions in the comment section
and we are good to go so thank you for
passing through that is that so i had
with me here we are thank you for
passing through and and i mean he's
going to come through for other
he's having i mean great stories to
share with us so he's going to always be
on my screen sometimes for you guys to
learn from him so that is that so peace
out
