Outlines

Transcripts
You will learn how your off-page optimization needs to change as a result of the insights from
the Google leak.
Have fun!
The leak clearly shows:
Links are one of the central ranking factors.
Perhaps shortly after user signals, but in my view clearly before content or what a document says
about itself.
Of course, content is still extremely important, because great user signals are the result of users
being satisfied with content.
One thing that Google kept denying was that they had something like domain authority.
After the leak, it's quite clear: There is this authority metric at Google.
It is part of the Compressed Quality Signals that are stored per URL.
Then, of course, something that is every SEO's dream.
You want to know: What are the best backlinks now?
Which backlinks should I focus on?
And here is the short answer from the leaks according to my interpretation:
Really concentrate exclusively on backlinks and mentions from the top-tier websites in your niche
- i.e. those that also bring the combination of relevance, but perhaps also from the really big
media, which may not be relevant to your topic, but can still publish a relevant article on your
topic and mention you there or refer to you.
And here's the exciting thing: Google's index is divided into layers, with the most important,
regularly updated and retrieved content being stored in flash memory.
Less important content is stored on solid-state drives and irregularly updated content is stored
on standard hard disks.
And depending on where your link comes from - so your link should ideally come from fresh
content on an authoritative website, so those are the best links.
The funny thing is: These links that many SEOs have focused on, namely that they end up there in
some resource lists, etc.
- if it works the way it seems in the leak now, these links do little to nothing.
What becomes very clear is why, for example, if you are now doing Black Hat SEO...
So I used to work a lot with private blog networks many, many years ago and what the leaks show is
why it works so well when you use links from the home page of expired domains.
It's quite clear when you read through this leak.
But now, to get back to practice - w hen w e look at Ahrefs - that's one of the metrics w e should
pay attention to, these 'best links'.
Here we should collect more best links, editorial links.
Das ist... This is what moves the needle.
And w hat you can set yourself as a bit of a benchmark is:
If you now jump into the SEMrush backlink audit, there is this item "Referring Domains by Authority
Score" and then there is "Show insight" and there is this list where they have simply made
benchmarks using probably a lot of data on how many links you should have from each category with
which authority.
I think the focus should be - in this very highest authority level, here we want to be
overperformers, that means between 60 and 100, we want more than what the benchmark is.
That should really be a goal to get here in SEO and not collect a lot of junk.
That should not be the goal.
And if we jump back to these animals:
The higher the level, the more valuable the link.
Pages that are considered fresh are also considered high quality by Google.
We want links from sites that are either fresh or otherwise in the top tier of this index.
So. And what is also very exciting, you can see in the leak:
Thanks to Clickstream, Google is good at assessing which links and mentions count and which do not.
So, and I don't just mean external links, even internal links.
But it simply shows that link building, as offered by most agencies, and all this link
broking is all bullshit, worthless, a rip-off.
You want relevant top-tier links, everything else is of little to no use from an SEO perspective.
I don't know if it does anything in any other context, but nothing in the SEO context.
Digital PR has become 10 times more important as a result of the leak.
We now know that mentions also count and definitely flow into the whole topic of entities.
In the context of Generative AI, it's about being quoted.
Digital PR is super important for this and perhaps making it into the training data via top-tier
media. And at the end of the day, these are the links you generate via Digital PR - these are the
links that have influence and everything else is nothing.
To give you an example:
Through our market research in the context of AI, for example, the AI Act trend has quoted us,
quoted our study and these are the links SEOs should live for and not for all this link broker
spam bullshit.
So.
Then - this is a super funny part, but it's true:
The authority of your start page is taken into account for all pages.
So I think the logic behind it is simple:
How else do you classify new pages on a website?
I think that's why they take it with them.
That's quite exciting .
And Google decides on the value of a link depending on how much trust Google has in the
homepage of the linking website.
T hat means that, for me, this also shows a bit about the topic of authority and relevance in
links - we already knew that this was important anyway, but I found it quite interesting.
I found this reference to the homepage of a website quite exciting.
Dann Linkspam.
We've talked about Penguin many times before on this channel.
A historically good link profile protects you on a certain level from Penguin and thus probably
also from things like Helpful Content Update and the like.
Because we know that Helpful Content Update is user signals plus link signals.
And in this context it becomes clear again:
If you have a business now - you don't have a churn and burn affiliate business now, you have a
real business - it's never worth building any low-quality links because Google stores a history
of link profiles, of user signals.
This means that all shortcuts will catch up with you at some point.
We want to build backlinks naturally, because the speed at which new links are gained is measured
and compared.
On the one hand, this is exciting in terms of the speed at which links are built up.
And now 1000 questions will pop up on the YouTube channel 'Yes, how fast can I build links?
As long as you don't build links automatically, you won't be able to build links as quickly - and
that should be your rule.
As soon as you build automatically, you are a spammer anyway and then Google will catch you at
some point. But in combination with this point, this is exciting for me: The first point is such a
protective mechanism and then there is this speed measurement and that is, I think, the reason why
Google is not afraid of negative SEO.
Negative SEO is always an issue, but I think these two mechanisms are what make them so confident in
recognizing whether or not something should have a negative impact.
So. Then, there really is such a thing as toxic backlinks.
So it's not something that link detox tool providers have used as a selling point, it
actually exists. I therefore recommend - others are of a completely
different opinion - but in my opinion it is little effort and can do no harm:
Continue to use the Disavow Tool .
We talked about this in a recent episode about the Helpful Content Update anyway.
I think it's important to simply maintain your link profile regularly.
Then, a huge part that I wouldn't have expected so much and which, for example, makes one of my
predictions at the end of last year, yes, a bit wrong, is mentions.
I say 'Hey, you should go more for mentions now, because mentions will become more important in the
future'. After studying the leak, it seems more like this:
Mentions are not dreams of the future, they are already a reality today, and Google uses them for
many things.
And that's why I think you should focus on that, not just links - so of course links are probably
the best, but mentions are also super important and I wouldn't focus on being mentioned as often
as possible now, but just as in the context of backlinks as prominently as possible in the most
prominent places in these top-tier media.
But I found it really exciting and that makes something like this super exciting for us:
A mention in the horizon by Irena Simakova from Similarweb has mentioned our brand.
Now it's not like 'Oh, that pleases my ego', but it probably pleases my rankings as well.
Super nice!
You should definitely consider this in your off-page optimization.
Finally, let's take a look at your website and from this perspective we'll look at internal and
external links, i.e.
links within your website and links from your website to other websites.
And here applies: Also pay attention to anchor text diversity for internal links.
According to the leak, Penguin also acts on your website and accordingly you should also pay
attention to anchor text over-optimization here.
Does this mean that you are now making a fuss with the anchor texts?
No, the anchor text should still be very relevant.
You can also see in the leak how important this is, because otherwise Google simply ignores the
link completely.
Of course, I also want to pay attention to cannibalization, which does not mean anchor text
diversity and I now link to the same page with different anchor texts that are actually relevant
for different pages.
No, I don't do that.
It's called simple - let's make it simple with an example:
We have the page "What is SEO?", our guide "What is SEO?".
And if I now want to improve the internal linking to this page, then I will not link to this page
every time with "What is SEO" or with "SEO", but I will link to this page with "SEO", "What is
SEO?", "Search Engine Optimization", "Search Engine Optimization" etc., with all these
different anchor texts.
On the one hand, this protects me from any Penguin stuff, on the other hand, it naturally increases
and expands my portfolio for which keywords this page can rank.
This is good best practice.
And the second thing, which is important in this context and which I have said completely wrong on
this channel and many of my SEO buddies have also seen completely wrong:
According to the leak, outgoing links are actually only important for the spam score.
A brief explanation: Spam score simply means this value, which I think goes up - so if you have
outbound links from your website to spammy websites, then your spam score goes up, if I have
it right in my head.
But there doesn't seem to be such a thing as trust links.
Uh, I think trustlinks were an illusion.
So everyone who does SEO knows the "Hey, I'm linking from my article.
.. I publish some guest article and then you link to an authority, then you link to your website and
then you link to another authority.
So nothing in the leaks feels like that to me.
Outbound links are actually only evaluated according to spam score, so they only have an
influence on the spam score.
I found it really exciting and I always think it's really cool when you see it:
I was very, very right about a lot of things, but I was wrong about some things.
In any case, many, many thanks for watching and see you next time.
Bye!
