at anfield fans players and pundits
alike are arriving still coming to terms
with the news that this will be clops
last season as Liverpool manager The
Show Must Go On though and the quest add
to his Hall of silverware continues this
afternoon it is Liverpool versus Norwich
in the fourth round of the FA Cup
kickoff is it
[Music]
2:30 welcome along to Match Day Live
we'll get the thoughts of Phil Thompson
and Tash Dow on today's cup Clash
shortly but first one story has
dominated the sporting landscape over
the past few days Jurgen klopp will be
leaving Liverpool at the end of the
season and this is how the news broke
when the manager spoke to James
Carol ah yeah I have
to
um I will leave the club at the end of
the
season I can understand that it's
uh
a shock for a lot of people in this
moment when you hear it the first time
and um but obviously I can explain it or
at least try to explain it
um
and I I love absolutely everything about
this club I love everything about the
city I love everything about our
supporters I love the team love the
stuff love everything that I still take
this decision probably will or shows you
that I'm convinced it's the one I have
to
take um it is that
I'm what how can I say that I'm running
out of
energy um I have no problem now
obviously I think I I I know it already
for for longer uh that I will have to
announce that at one point but um I'm
absolutely fine now but I um know that I
cannot do the job again and again and
again and again
and after all the years we had together
and after all the time we spent together
and after
all the things we went through together
um the respect grew for you the love
grew for you and the least thing I owe
you is the truth and that's the truth
you obviously offered a lot of detail in
that first answer but I'm sure you
appreciate how big this news is for our
supporters so we'll drill down into some
of the topics and the reasons behind
your decision I think the first thing
fans will want to know is as something
happens are you okay I'm okay I'm
healthy so as much as you can in my age
uh little bibs and Bops stuff like that
but um nothing anybody has to be
concerned about so that's absolutely
fine it's um I told the
club already in
November it is that I
um I have to explain a little bit the
the the the maybe the job I I I do it's
people see from the outside I'm on the
touchline training session stuff like
this but obviously the majority of all
the things happen around these kind of
things um that means a season starts and
you plan pretty much much the next
season already and
um when we sat there together talking
about
potential signings and the next summer
camp and can we go wherever I just
realized I'm
not I I I the thought came up I'm not
sure I'm then here anymore and I was
surprised by myself about that and then
I I started obviously thinking about it
and um it was all it started not it
didn't start but of course last season
was kind of a super difficult season and
for me was super super super important
that I can help to bring this team back
on the rails it was all I was thinking
about and when I realized pretty early
okay that happened then
I could start thinking about myself
again and that what that was the outcome
and um it's it's not what I want
to um it's just what I think is 100%
right um
and yeah yeah that's it are you at all
concerned this news could have a
negative impact on the remainder of the
season I understand the question 100%
that's up to us I would say I'm 100% in
the season and we can go through I think
we have in is world we have kind of 30
games coming up or something like that
that's in other countries a full season
so there are so many things out to play
for the way we grew together in the last
few years um is is absolutely
exceptional absolutely exceptional and I
always said it and especially now it's
still true nothing has to happen because
of me so nobody has to make the games
now about me please don't if I can ask
for that it would be really nice um
and we just support each other and I'm
fully here I I don't think anybody
realized any difference uh in the last
few months if there may be a positive
change um because I have to say when I
made the decision as hard as it is this
was a relief as well it was like okay I
um I I there will be is a Finishing Line
and not for not being here anymore if I
could stay here and and uh in that role
I would be over the moon I just can't
and that's that's it I really want to
um perform on the high highest level and
um we get only Disturbed if we let it
happen as a as as as a club and um I
really hope that it will not happen with
the team I'm I'm sure um that they that
they will be fine um with the crowd I'm
sure will be fine but um the world out
there is bigger and the social media
world and all these kind of things um
but I think it's worth that we really do
what we always did we live in a moment
we we we push each other as much as we
can and we go for absolutely everything
I just want to come back to your love
for the city of Liverpool you said
something recently and I think our
supporters would quite like to hear what
you said it was about what getting the
freedom of the city meant to
you getting the key of the city is one
of the special moment most special
moments of my entire life that I never
expected something like this to happen
makes you more special because I didn't
even know that you have something like
that when I got it when I heard the
speeches when I when I saw the ceremony
and all these kind of things it was so
special it was incredible um and made me
an honorable liver pudle and so or scow
however you want to see it and um I
couldn't be more proud on that but there
are so many things and I'm that's not
the moment to to talk about the
fantastic time we had because I actually
this wonderful book we wrote together
since we are here together um I I I
would love to
put a few more chapters um into it a
message to supporters I really I really
would
like you to accept the decision that
would be nice and then if I can ask for
one more for one more thing after
telling you don't sing my song too early
after telling you be loud in the stadium
stuff like I could ask you for one more
thing it would be don't make these these
games about me
because there's no need for we always
knew and the only thing I always wanted
is the full support for the team it's
not for me I know about our relationship
I don't need any kind of proof we will
have a
moment maybe last match day here or
somewhere else I mean in other countries
or other competitions there's enough
time to do these kind of things let's
now really go for it the outside world
want to use that this decision love
about it blah blah blah want to do want
to make want to disturb
us we are Liverpool we went through
harder things together and you went
through harder things before me and
let's make a strength of it that would
be really cool let's squeeze everything
out of this season um and have another
thing to smile about when we look back
in the future thank you there aren't
many interviews on which you hang
on every word but that is certainly one
the news on Friday I think blindsided us
all it's still difficult to try and take
in fully um but you can't argue Tomo
with the impact that J klopp has made
here so far and the difference he's made
he's made a massive difference and that
that interview you're quite right Mark
because where was look we always listen
a great wonder how he finds the words
and he he's not a politician he's not an
actor he's not he's looking straight
down the camera with all his answers and
there so much drama with it there's so
much passion with it there's so much
honesty with it you just you're
absolutely ignore of him the way he
delivers everything I think that's the
big thing that we've had from Jurgen and
we've loved every interview with L he's
been fantastic for the premier league
but what he's brought to us as fans of
our club is extra special that bonds
between fans manager staff players has
been brought even closer together than
ever since those 70s and 80s that we've
all talked about you see here with his
passion with his
commitment to Liverpool and it's been
special it's been special and then
there's the players what this guy has
given us he's given us but what he he's
done for their careers made them good
plays into great players not just the
fans believing but the players believing
in what they can do and he all these
accolades that are coming his way he
thoroughly deserves because he's given
it to us we need to give it back to him
in this you know in the games that are
remaining he said in the interview Tash
he's running out of energy he said in
his press conference later he says this
isn't a job that you can do on three
wheels so in some ways you can kind of
understand why he's decided to take a
step back because he's put so much and
we saw in the pictures so much of
himself into this job since he walked
through the door yeah absolutely and I
think he has he's invested so much for
himself not just on the pitch with what
he's brought us silverware wise but off
it you know he's an adopted Scout now
you know he is one of us and and I think
you can see that in the way that he
speaks way he is with the fans I mean
I've never met him and when I heard the
announcement I I really choked up you
know and I think that just shows the
impact he's had he said when he came
here he wanted to leave the club in a
better place and wow he has and we're
just so lucky I'm honored that I've been
here to be able to witness him being our
manager and I really hope in some sort
of way he can be an ambassador or he can
come back and stay involved within the
club that's what I would love yeah we
were chatting sort of just prior to
coming on her Tom when I was saying to
you this is one of those landmark
moments in the club's history isn't it
and we go back to the impact when when
shankley walked away the impact when
Kenny stepped down this is alongside
those moments oh it's seismic it really
is and I was there 20 year old just in
the side just changing the way Liverpool
played under Bill shankley thinking that
the years ahead are going to be
fantastic and then it was cut short he
retired and it wasn't spoke about this
all sort of Saturday and Friday when we
had the news but then the with Kenny
daglish after the 44 how close he was
with Kenny's values what he had had with
the club shank's values and this guy has
done it you know but this guy's not
British this guy is German and he's
coming here and I think it's one of the
biggest things that you can say is the
great values that the man
has it goes exactly with the fans and I
I say if you cannot just get the club if
you get our values if you understand us
we together can do dramatic things and
that's exactly what he has brought us
he's G us some great moments you know
all I things 30 years of ha ended
another European Cup done and dusted and
he just he he give and and as the song
goes what he promised he delivered well
that's the thing though isn't it Tash
it's not just about getting the club
getting the city it's about winning
things as well that's what this place is
about and he's certainly done that you
look at the fact he was able to bring
the Premier League title look at his
record in the Premier League only City
have picked up more points in the
Premier League since CL came into the
club you can't argue with with what he's
done no and I think that almost comes
second but I think I think exactly what
Phil said is that he came here and look
it wasn't something that just happened
overnight you know he invested in the
players and I think that's the most
powerful thing with cl when I look at
him and his relationship with the
players he puts the players first then
the player and I think that's the most
powerful thing his man management skills
the way that he tactically this season
for me has been phenomenal with some of
his decision making during games his won
US games was just on his own actually as
a managerial decision making but you
spot on but then moving on to that he
has brought success the Premier League
the Champions League all those things
and obviously he's going to be
remembered for that but I think more
than anything he'll just be remembered
for the person he was you know and all
of that is just an added bonus only
Kenny in his first spelling charge has a
better win percentage than Jurgen klopp
and I think the key thing from what he's
done here it's not just the fact he's
taking a group to the end of the run and
then he's walking away with with the
place in a mess the infr struct is
better the the the building blocks are
in place whoever comes in next inherits
a great Squad with huge potential ready
to go on to the next charge I think that
that's had a little bit to do with it
because I think the recruitment has been
probably better and settle better than
what he thought if You' have said to me
the middle this time last year I'd have
maybe got it cuz after after going for
the four Trophies the season before the
players were drained I looked at Jen and
I thought he was drained and it took so
much out of him but this season with the
sence I think he's been rejuvenated he's
gone wow these have settled in really
quick we're playing the brand of
football again these Lads have brought
energy back I can now leave I can do my
bit and I've done my bit and how can I
plan for the future when I don't feel
that I've got it so I do think he looks
at this squad and I think he's leaving
us in a better position than what he
even thought
okay guys well as the manager said in
his interview it is business as usual
though and the business at hand here
today of course is a fourth round FA Cup
clash with Norwich City McDow now has
the details of Liverpool's starting
lineup yeah it's always been the most
dramatic of ups and downs hasn't it
where supporting Liverpool has been
concerned but the roller coasters had
the steepest of ups and downs this week
but if we play our cards right we still
could have 30 games with Jurgen klopp in
charge and that Min season of course
starts today he's already negotiating
Chelsea then arsenal of course norch
today is the jam in the swi so what does
he have at his disposal reinforcements
on the way Thiago back training and uh
when we take a look at this substitutes
bench you will see that those
reinforcements of real experience are on
the way let's take a look at the team
then the headline being that there's
five changes from that team that secured
that Wembley final Allison returns in
goal as that dream anfield start for
James McConnell in that Liverpool
Midfield today sober slide Trent
Alexander Arnold not played since
January the 7th and Andre Robertson are
amongst the Liverpool substitutes so the
11 Allison Gomez canate who got his last
goal in the FA Cup at Wembley against
Man City Nunes Jones gakpo jotter
grenberg McConnell uh quano who's 21
tomorrow by the way Chang those summer
plans of Jurgen klopp with how his
progression has really come along like a
dream and uh and Bradley who again has
just been imperious the last couple of
weeks made his debut against Norwich in
the league cup and then the substitutes
bench just screams experience doesn't it
kellerer who has to take a break for
this game Virgil Van djk Diaz soas slly
this will be his first appearance in the
FA Cup Elliot Robertson Clark Beck and
Trent Alexander Arnold back in the squad
as well so five wins from Seven away
from home imperious home form as well
you do have the feeling that we could
really do with a straightforward win
here this
afternoon thank you Pete the Norwich
team is just breaking as well changing
goal for them long coming in for Angus
gun Stacy Hanley Gibson mallum Nunes
mlan Sarah Hernandez fash and barn so
maybe by my Reckoning maybe four changes
or so from that side that lost to lead
United in their last outing it will
drill into their team in more detail
though through the course of the show H
in terms of our team I guess McConnell's
illusion Tash is the headline what a
huge opportunity from his first start
what a stage what an opportunity he gets
today yeah absolutely and fully deserved
um you know with my new role as an
ambassador I've been working at the
Academy a lot and I've been following
his processes with the under 21s and
he's been performing really well week in
week out for them so I thought a start
or an involvement would be soon but what
a great opportunity at anfield in front
of the ground obviously off the back of
the clock news so I'm sure the crowd's
going to be louder than ever um and I'm
sure he's going to take it like all the
youngsters have done every single one of
them that stepped onto the pitch have
played beyond their years and I'm sure
he will yeah that's another Legacy of
Youngs is the way he's been willing to
give young players a chance and the
faith he's put in them and also how he's
utilized them to get the success he had
he's he's eak every little bit out of
the group he's had well he has and he he
makes no secrets and and you feel that
love don't you when you're listening to
him after the game you tonight the way
he's talking about Bobby Clark the way
he's talking about Quanza you just go
like that you think you know this this
fell has got he getting the word invest
great faith in them I think if you've
got the trust you can actually go out
and play James today will be thinking oh
my goodness he does and it's not just
like he's getting thrown in from the
academy he's been training with the
first team for quite a while so he gets
to know them on a personal side and so
that when he comes in today he's an
equal he's ready to sort of perform and
it's not just change Ben does of this
world Bobby Clarks Connor Bradley
everybody he gives these Lads a chance
and you just go Jal Quanza how good is
he been and he just it can roll on
because you can go back to when Trent
fair started and it was just magnificent
so this is what he is leaving us not
just a great sort of first team squad
but his boys there ready to step up no
better place done to play and make your
debut at home are you surprised at all
Tash that that he's not put Annie
Robertson in from the start and giving
Joe Gomez sort of half an afternoon off
or it's part of the reason he's not the
fact that Joe has played so well maybe
Joe wants to keep playing yeah I think
from the start it's always a little bit
risky you know the high tempo of the
game so I think you'll definitely see
Robinson maybe get you know normally
when you come back from an injury it's
maybe 30 minutes then you build up to 60
75 and then you get your full 90 that's
what tends to happen with the sport
sence side of things so I think Robo
should get either maybe second half or a
good third minutes today but Gomez has
been brilliant like you said left side
right side played that inverted Midfield
role and you know it's great to see
someone that's playing with so much
confidence with a big smile on his face
I thought he might have started him
today so that is's warm and he's ready
to to start no problems with the way it
is because Joe Gomez has been terrific
uh and I you could see from Wednesday
night van djk and K Quanza at center
backs and you knew today because with
the two big big games coming up that it
would be IU canate and Gerald Quanza
playing today so you could more or less
see that change so he is looking ahead
but my goodness the bench is looking
strong and as we heard there players
coming back from
injury it's interesting we look at
what's happened with the recent games
and just touched on the fact that that
uh Gomez starts today Quanza played in
midweek but K Quanza has actually been
one of the real success stories because
the way he's sort of come in now nobody
bats an island if he plays now cuz he's
been so assured it's unbelievable isn't
it it really is and I think Phil makes a
great point it's it's how the manager
makes you feel and the players around
him you see when he makes a tackle
you've got Virgil Van djk Trent all
those experienced players going up to
him high-fiving him getting around him
they've got a real brotherly
togetherness this year and Quan are on
the ball you know I think it's a huge
compliment to him that everyone was
talking before the season we need to
sent a half we need to Center half and
now klopp saw that the kid playing
preseason he's like we don't need a
center half you and he's not put a foot
wrong really since he's played and I can
say that honestly through all the kids
that have come through and I think it's
credit to Alex inglethorp the academy
what they're doing there you you don't
get a chance with the first team unless
you pass the academy you know and I
think it's just brilliant to see so many
coming through now you see these clips
there there's a variety of things there
what he does how composed he is out on
out on the left wing T and making making
good decisions is assist for the goal
which is across ball Al van DJ he has
brought so much he he's a great one
there which people wouldn't have seen
was just from the halfway line the play
trying to play a pass into the center
forward and he's ready early not too
early and won the
ball what comes across his is his
composure and to play at this level so
young i' seen it in at the Academy when
he was playing there this boy possesses
so much quality in what he do he is a
proper Liverpool player never ever looks
flustered I think that's the thing that
stands out most of all okay guys well
