Happiness and the Meaning Of Your Life | Episode #2
Summary
TLDRIn this thought-provoking video, Mike Israel explores the complex relationship between happiness and the meaning of life. He posits that happiness is an evolutionary mechanism designed to drive survival behaviors. However, in the modern world, certain 'hacks' to our happiness systems, like drugs and overindulgence in food or porn, can undermine our well-being. Israel suggests aligning happiness with progress by discouraging harmful sources of joy, being neutral towards neutral activities, and promoting those that enhance both personal fulfillment and societal advancement.

Outlines
😀 Happiness and Life's Meaning
In the second video for the Making Progress channel, Mike Israel explores the concept of happiness and its relation to the meaning of life. He posits that progress, which enhances survival, should be a core aspect of life's purpose. He humorously dismisses the idea of a cult and delves into the definition of happiness as a system that guides behavior towards survival goals. He explains that happiness is derived from activities that have evolutionary benefits, such as eating, drinking, and socializing. Mike also discusses how certain activities like music and art can 'hack' the happiness systems, sometimes in ways that aren't directly linked to survival. The video raises the question of how to integrate happiness with progress in a meaningful way.
😅 The Evolutionary Roots of Happiness
Mike Israel continues the discussion on happiness by examining its evolutionary roots. He explains that the happiness derived from activities like eating, drinking, and sex are psychological mechanisms that evolved to promote survival and reproduction. He also addresses how modern environments can disrupt these evolved happiness systems, leading to behaviors that may be pleasurable but detrimental to long-term survival, such as drug addiction and overindulgence in food and pornography. The paragraph highlights the tension between our evolved happiness mechanisms and the modern world, suggesting that some forms of happiness may no longer serve their original evolutionary purpose of enhancing survival.
🤔 The Three Types of Happiness
In this segment, Mike categorizes happiness into three types: those that are harmful to survival, those that are neutral, and those that are beneficial to both individual and societal progress. He suggests reducing activities that provide happiness but are detrimental, being indifferent to neutral activities that neither harm nor benefit progress, and nurturing activities that align with progress and happiness. Mike emphasizes the importance of aligning happiness with actions that contribute positively to one's life and society, promoting a balanced approach to finding fulfillment.
🛠 Aligning Happiness with Progress
Mike discusses strategies for aligning happiness with progress, suggesting that individuals should minimize harmful sources of happiness, maintain a neutral stance on those that don't impact progress, and actively pursue those that contribute positively. He encourages finding joy in productive work, cooperation with others, raising children, and maintaining physical and mental health. The paragraph emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility in choosing activities that not only provide happiness but also support long-term survival and societal well-being.
🌟 Promoting Progressive Happiness
The final paragraph focuses on the societal aspect of promoting progressive happiness—happiness that contributes to the betterment of society and the individual. Mike suggests that while humans have limitations in changing their happiness mechanisms, efforts can be made to discourage harmful behaviors, maintain freedom for neutral ones, and encourage those that are beneficial. He hints at the universality of preferences for policies that promote happiness aligned with progress, suggesting that there is a common ground that can be found across diverse perspectives. The video concludes with a teaser for the next video, which will explore societal outcomes that most people prefer, indicating a focus on policies that enhance collective well-being.

Highlights
Survival is the most important thing, and progress increases the chance of survival, suggesting that striving towards progress should be a core meaning in life.
Happiness is defined as the nervous system's way of directing behavior towards evolved survival goals.
Activities that make you happy, such as eating tasty food or enjoying the company of others, are evolved psychological mechanisms to support survival.
Some things that make you happy, like music or art, hack the systems designed for survival, but not necessarily in a bad way.
Drugs can activate the happiness systems designed as motivators, sometimes leading to negative outcomes like addiction.
The current environment can hack our happiness systems, leading to behaviors that reduce survival probability, such as heroin addiction.
Overconsumption of tasty food due to modern availability can lead to health issues, contrasting with the scarcity in our ancestral environment.
Porn addiction is an example of overconsumption that doesn't increase survival value and can detract from other life progress.
There are three kinds of happiness: those that are bad for survival, those that are neutral, and those that support survival and progress.
Reducing behaviors that make you happy but are bad for you and others is important for aligning happiness with progress.
Neutral happiness sources, like listening to music or looking at art, don't necessarily detract from progress and can be enjoyed without guilt.
Supporting and nurturing happiness that comes from productive work and contributes to society is ideal.
Finding a balance between pursuing personal happiness and contributing to societal progress is key to a fulfilling life.
Societal policies should discourage behaviors that are detrimental to happiness and progress, while promoting those that enhance both.
There is a universal preference for policies that promote happiness and progress, as most people agree on what constitutes a better society.
The video suggests that future content will explore specific societal outcomes and policies that align with the concept of progressive happiness.
Transcripts
hey folks Mike Israel here for the
making progress Channel video number two
happiness and the meaning of your life
so if you manage to watch the last and
first video we've ever had
I sort of concluded a few things
first because survival is the most
important thing
and that progress increases the chance
of survival into the future that's
striving towards progress to becoming
better in many different ways
should create the core or at least a
core meaning of your very life
now truth be told this is starting to
sound like a cult hold up I gotta do my
Marshall Applewhite eyes
join us progress
welcome Timmy
run run if anyone ever does that [ __ ]
for real
so like most Cults don't really mention
individual happiness we haven't done
that either what about happiness damn it
great question but before it let's
answer another very fundamental one that
a lot of people never get to answering
and just kind of imply and that is what
is happiness
and there is actually a non-mysterious
definition of happiness
happiness at the end of the day is your
nervous system's way of directing your
behavior towards evolved
ancestral drumroll
survival goals
what makes you happy
a warm blanket in a cold room
tall glass of water when you're parched
oh I'm so parched what a fancy way of
saying thirsty
eating tasty food when you're hungry
having yourself some sex when you're
horny
enjoying the company of others etc etc
etc
these are all sources of very deep
happiness
and they are also all evolved
psychological mechanisms to get you to
do stuff to get you Desiring to do stuff
searching for that happiness and that
stuff is stuff that helps you survive
and also make children that also survive
so that's where happiness comes from
now some stuff that makes you happy
hacks those systems to some extent uh
not necessarily in a bad way sometimes
in a bad way so it's kind of figure it's
hard to figure out but really it's those
same happiness systems that evolve for
survival that that's just all you have
to make you happy sometimes you can hit
them with weird stuff that kind of isn't
linearly related to survival for example
music
the [ __ ] does music make us happy
there's all kinds of ideas on it but I
trust and believe all of it ends with
the systems in your brain they're
designed to be goal seeking motivated
systems to bring you happiness to create
survival at least that's what they're
trying to do art the [ __ ] why does art
make you happy again it's kind of
hacking systems that were designed to
create goal directed behaviors that
increased your survivability
drugs drugs actually in many cases just
actively activate the happiness systems
that are designed to be motivators but
now you just hit them direct definitely
a hack and sometimes not the greatest
thing in the world
so that brings us to an interesting
problem set with the idea of happiness
even though happiness is evolved to make
us try to survive better
our current environment is way different
in many very important respects than the
evolutionary ancestral environment in
which many of those happiness systems
actually evolved
and parts of this current environment
can hack those systems and hack the
happiness circuitry and actually reduce
our survival probability uh which is
really bad for example heroin addiction
okay the opioid system in your brain is
designed to create happiness and comfort
it's designed to be hit up by other
neural Pathways that promote you getting
to things that actually help you survive
but you can just straight up put opiates
right into that system and you get
happiness in a needle and that's how
heroin addiction happens too much tasty
food
not a problem back in the day because
you would basically not run into too
much food because humans were all on the
verge of starvation and most of our
ancestral time now we have supermarkets
where food is nominally expensive and a
lot of people get really fat and
eventually unhappy because they have
that proximate system that tells them
more food will make you happy and it's
not wrong in the short term and long
term it's really really wrong
porn addiction like titties are supposed
to make you real [ __ ] happy because
them is the [ __ ] that's where
immortality lives God damn it
immortality so is I'm going to be
absolutely crystal clear about this if
you are male I'm relate to you a little
better than if you're female if you are
male the reason fundamentally the
ultimate reason that you are attracted
to females is because they have inside
them immortality engines that's what
replicators are they have the [ __ ]
moon in that [ __ ] and your [ __ ]
ass is not passing on your genes unless
you get into that [ __ ] so the reason
that sex is [ __ ] amazing and is
sublimely [ __ ] happiness inducing is
because your brain in a sense
evolutionarily interprets it as a window
to the immortality of your genes genes
that built the whole system by the way
that makes a ton of sense but porn just
puts a shitload of sex in front of you
really fast and sometimes you just kind
of don't know what to do with it and you
over consume it of course that doesn't
increase your survival probability
because you're spilling the sperm he's
all over the [ __ ] place hopefully you
got your [ __ ] contained when you jack
off but that's neither here nor there
you know what I'm saying you're not
making increased survival value in most
cases by consuming porn and porn
addiction means you're not doing all the
other stuff in your life that actually
supports progress so the system hacking
is not a great thing
many of our happiness systems are
essentially old as [ __ ] right and
they're very deeply ingrained into the
design of our brain so it's not so
amenable to just changing your mind and
be like I just won't be interested in
that right like it's weird if you say
like well I can just decide not to
listen to music anymore because it's not
helping me survive better like [ __ ]
that's really hard it might be close to
impossible for most people and not even
desirable for most people so where does
that leave us so we have a bit of a
problem right
it leaves us with the idea that there
are maybe three kinds of happiness that
you have access to right now in your
world
the first is things that make you happy
but that are actively bad for you or
others on your survival team
your family your friends your Society
Etc
things like deleterious drugs like you
can smoke crack it will make you happy
for a short time that it'll [ __ ] you up
it'll reduce your robustness and ability
to survive into the future
case in point crackheads you know look
at a crackhead and you're like God damn
that person's got it all figured out
that's [ __ ] Elon Musk right there
shooting people who disrespect you and
[ __ ] like that getting into pointless
arguments and violent fights and [ __ ]
that's bad idea okay so some things like
it can make you [ __ ] super happy to
beat the [ __ ] out of someone to
disrespect the [ __ ] out of you 100
but that's an old ancestral form of
happiness that doesn't lead to anything
good
so some things that make you happy are
bad and you don't want to do them
there are other things that make you
happy that are neutral towards your
ability to progress and progress here
again means increasing your ability to
survive into the future increasing your
robustness and your cooperation with
others
some of these things that are mostly
neutral are things like listening to
music you listen to music it does not
degrade your ability to survive into the
future in most cases
looking at art you know you're not
running through art museums like you
guys need to all go work at the factory
what the [ __ ] are you doing like Jesus
you're going to be in a mental
institution real quick if you do that
and you know like art doesn't destroy
lives or some [ __ ] my son used to be a
good person guided in that art museum
debauchery ensued
if you have a healthy relationship and
almost everyone does no offense if you
don't hopefully you work on your [ __ ] uh
healthy relationship with [ __ ] like porn
if I can look at porn jack off once or
you know a couple once every couple
other days and should usually hurts no
one's pretty neutral really just
defending my own habits at this point
uh [ __ ] like pickup you know like if
you're into like having consensual
sexual relations with other people and
they think it's fun and you think it's
fun and it just wastes a few hours of
your day every now and again it's not
the end of the world it's essentially
neutral
Etc et cetera there's tons of other
stuff in that category so two two
categories so far one hap things that
make you happy or can that are not good
for you they're not good for your
long-term survival or societies
certainly [ __ ] not yours then there are
things that are neutral uh they're not
good or bad for you really they take up
some time but uh other than that no big
deal and they make you happy but they're
not really like you know you're not
gonna listen to like a [ __ ] mixtape
and you're like hell yeah we're building
progress like okay
and then three things that make you
happy that are good for your survive for
example eating nutritious food
doing deep work to produce valuable
goods and services I'm sure [ __ ] happy
that [ __ ] Jeff Bezos gives his
happiness from [ __ ] making Amazon
because God damn I got the [ __ ] Mouse
from Amazon [ __ ]
having conversations that resolve
conflicts that can make a lot of people
happy and thank God those people exist
because then we have fewer confidence
and of course sacks between committed
partners that results in planned
children as both very happiness inducing
uh wholesome in the best possible way
and also really good for Progress
because more children equals more people
equals more members on our survival team
equals higher survival chances into the
future amazing all winners so Point
number three is really kind of sweet
that Third Kind Of Happiness is really
kind of oh chef's kiss
so how do we fit progress and happiness
together
to create a good intersection
of purpose which should be progress if
you've thought it through and happiness
you want to do a couple things first
you want to reduce generally the kinds
of happy things that are bad for you and
your team and by team I mean members of
your survival team which include your
friends family Society World ecosystem
Etc like if what gives you your kicks is
like
I don't know spilling toxic chemicals
Captain Planet style into a river that's
[ __ ] stupid and you should probably
stop doing that because if you really
thought about it it's not helping you
down the road or anyone you love down
the road it's hurting people and if what
makes you happy is hurting you uh also
not the best thing in the world so you
just kind of want to reduce the
behaviors that make you happy but are no
good
number two thing you want to do is for
neutral things things that make you
happy but have no real big effect
positive or negative on progress and
your life purpose of progress uh you can
just take or leave it's no big deal at
all I'm not gonna be a crazy moralist
you know puritanical psycho on this
channel and be like if it's not towards
progress you shouldn't be [ __ ] doing
it if it doesn't hurt anyone and it
doesn't even hurt you it's just some fun
thing you can do and then get back to
doing progress [ __ ] later totally cool
whatever and if you want to do less of
it and work more in progress that's also
cool
and number three is you probably want to
try to support nurture and really enjoy
the [ __ ] out of things that make you
happy and support your life now and into
the future by creating progress
things like working productively okay if
productive work your day job makes you
happy holy [ __ ] [ __ ] have you cracked
the [ __ ] Matrix I'll talk about that
later on its own video that's the
[ __ ] gold standard because you're you
get paid to be happy
and it's good for society and it's good
for you holy [ __ ] that's awesome
so anytime like there's movies and [ __ ]
or comic strips about how much people
hate their jobs I'm always like I giggle
a little bit like oh yeah [ __ ] that's
hilarious but then I'm always like
that's [ __ ] sad you shouldn't want
that you should want the work to be
ideally something you find happiness
with and that's not always up to you for
sure but but it's a good thing
you could try to draw happiness from
being cooperative with others
like a social worker can draw happiness
from getting people to get along better
amazing great for everyone great for
that person awesome
drawing happiness from raising your
children well what a [ __ ] great thing
to do
drawing happiness from supporting and
improving your physical health and
working out eating rights should I know
a lot about I guess on another Channel
Renaissance periodization if you want go
there click on links and buy stuff
that's good I have a Lamborghini
collection I need to tend to
and the Lamborghinis are not free
though I have petitioned my state
legislator to make a law that entitles
me personally only to hundreds of
Lamborghinis per year
supporting and improving your mental
health because if your mental health is
better your ability to make yourself
more robust and help other members of
society also grows a ton
so you want to try to support and
nurture and really enjoy out of all
these good things and 50 trillion others
that have that intersection of both make
you happy and cause progress in your
life and for the lives of others for the
things that don't really matter much
don't really affect progress but make
you happy you can do them as little or
as much as you like as long as you're
checking the big big boxes of you know
staying alive and have enough money to
buy food and have shelter and [ __ ] like
that and you want to probably do less of
the [ __ ] that's actively bad for you and
actively bad for everyone else even
though it makes you happy sometimes
people say just do what makes you happy
and it's like all right like having a
loaded gun and shooting you in the face
makes me happy now what they're like oh
except except that and whole other class
of behaviors which just file onto Point
number one right there
now would a one-to-one link
between everything that makes you happy
and everything that helps you and
Society progress be really sweet yes
[ __ ] yes no doubt
but for now we're just biological
organisms with very limited malleability
if we had a machine intelligence that
had certain happiness ability and it was
pointed in the wrong direction we could
rewire the code and then all of a sudden
the happiness we would generate would
rewire it into all the things that were
good for it and the system around it
amazing but humans man it's tough to
change people in many respects we can
change but only to a limited extent so
we have to do our best to align the
origin of where happiness of the things
that make us happy and the [ __ ] that's
good for us and good for society but we
can't expect miracles overnight and we
probably shouldn't sweat the small stuff
you're like okay I can watch TV for
another half hour or I could go to sleep
right now and and uh get well rested so
I can be better at my career and help
the world like [ __ ] half hour who gives
a [ __ ] if you're going to worry about
[ __ ] like that I'll tell you it's a
little secret
the worrying itself probably adds so
much psychological fatigue to your life
and it makes you worse the rest of it so
definitely don't sweat the small stuff
um we just kind of have to do the the
best when we're able to and really just
try to avoid doing the worst when we're
up against the ropes like but if you're
having a really [ __ ] day and someone in
the store bumps into you by accident or
you don't know if it's by accident like
just [ __ ] throwing hands with him
right away probably a stupid idea that
you know if you're at your very [ __ ]
Wit's End maybe just be like and like
what was that you're like nothing ah I
just keep walking
and even that is [ __ ] doing a lot of
real real good stuff just following your
happiness when you know what's going to
end in bad things for you and bad things
for other people you know like children
do [ __ ] like that but adults typically
were expected to think ahead just a tiny
little bit
now
what can we do because I just talked
about how we're limited and we can try
hard but sometimes we don't succeed what
can we do we can think of ways to act
that check a couple of boxes first
discourage pursuing happiness that is
anti-progress like if your friends are
like hey let's go [ __ ] rob a store
you're gonna be what the [ __ ] is wrong
with you guys [ __ ] that somebody who
[ __ ] worked hard for that [ __ ] and if
we all start robbing stores Society goes
straight to Hell dumb [ __ ] think
one second ahead of your [ __ ] dumb
ass stop doing stupid
we can think of ways to act that are
neutral towards sources of happiness
that don't hurt anybody hey [ __ ] let's
get into the politically correct
incorrect [ __ ] right away why are
recreational drugs that hurt no one
illegal why is marijuana illegal
anywhere you guys ever see a headline
crazy death rate for marijuana
legalization Society on its knees when
marijuana spreads to the streets what
and the same people that'll tell you
yeah out of a pot's bad they'll do that
while having Brandy and then beating the
[ __ ] out of their wife with the other
hand
I'm just kidding alcohol never makes
people violent
so some [ __ ] that we might not like
personally
it doesn't [ __ ] with Society it doesn't
[ __ ] with us it doesn't even [ __ ] with
the people doing it it's just another
way to live
if we can just be easy about it easier
about it and kind of Live and Let Live
Even in our own Hearts all I'm saying is
something to think about
you know like
I'll tell you right now I've got like
250 videos already planned for this
channel here's how many of them talk
about like trans people and [ __ ] [ __ ]
zero why I know because I'm saying you
do you I never had a trans person come
up to me and be like hey you got to live
this way if they do we're gonna have a
[ __ ] problem but for now no problem
and if that happens policy wise putting
your values on other people is total
[ __ ] right but it works both ways so if
someone's doing some [ __ ] you don't like
you're like that's bad for society or
anything it's really like no no it's not
I just don't like to see him then it's
probably not worth [ __ ] with
but it's a good idea to promote and
encourage sources of happiness that are
very much pro-progress that's a good
thing that's something we can all get
behind
we can do this thing of discouraging
being neutral and and promoting
discouraging the bad things being
neutral to the neutral things promoting
the good things to ourselves
individually in your own daily life all
right I am going to not try to punch my
landlord in the face because I hate him
punching people in the face is bad I am
going to yes watch a movie on Friday
night instead of going to sleep super
early because it doesn't really [ __ ]
matter on the grand scheme of things and
I like this [ __ ] movie and I'm also
going to go work out and eat right and
try to do good at my job because that
actually does support progress and makes
me happy okay sweet
you can do this kind of promotion to
your within your family within your
local community and in society on a
policy basis
policies that discourage doing
things that can make someone happy but
that are bad for them and everyone else
or probably good policies or better than
other policies
policies that promote neutrality also
called Freedom by the way towards things
that don't [ __ ] really matter much
are probably good and then policies that
promote things that are kind of really
good for most people are probably also
better than policies that promote bad
things right
and as it turns out this isn't so
controversial because way more people
are sorry people are way more alike than
they are different right especially
in what policies on a social level
promote Progressive happiness What
policies the government slash Society
slash economic system can have and
endorse that promote that category
number three type of Happiness things
that make people happy and are also
actively improving the survival ability
of the society in the future happiness
plus progress equals good things
and a lot of people from very different
walks of life can agree a lot on what
those kinds of policies should be
next time in the next video which will
be out in hopefully just a few days
we'll see what kinds of societal
outcomes almost everyone prefers
to give you a hint it's like you get a
room of 100 people all different kinds
of people from all over me like raise
your hand if you like high crime
some stupid [ __ ] raise his hand
someone next to him punches him in the
face he sits down I was like I'm just
kidding clearly I don't like it done to
me
who likes pollution
uh who loves homeless people being
around and having nowhere to sleep and
sleeping in the street and getting
[ __ ] up by a climate drug needles
everywhere nobody [ __ ] likes that
[ __ ] there's a ton of universals we'll
talk about in the next video that almost
everyone prefers and we can establish
that core is our kind of progressive
policy preference what we would like to
do on a social level what we'd like to
see that both supports progress of
society so that we can all be alive
later and makes many more people happy
than not happy because we pretty much
all like happy things that promote
progress for all of us
and what are those things well [ __ ] I'm
teasing the [ __ ] out of you guys I'll
see you next time for that foreign
