Transcripts
then of course we have pest and disease
control technologies that have been
improved over the years and today our in
contemporary agriculture our aim for
pest and disease control is really to
reduce infestation or infection without
really affecting yields on the
environment so we have to apply our
technologies or other our strategies in
trying to control pests and disease in a
very environmentally benign manner and
of course ecologically sound manner so
so what has happened over the years is
we there's been a lot of work that has
improved pesticide properties in terms
of selectivity so we have pesticides
that are very specific to the target
these days so this kind of pesticides
will not harm non targets so this kind
of pesticides would be safe for use in
in the field without you having to worry
whether it's going to hurt beneficial
organisms and so on okay
and so selectivity of pesticide has been
improved because we have biological
control agents that have been developed
over the years this is an investigating
piece of technology because instead of
using chemicals we use another
microorganism or an insect to control
say another insect so insect versus in
sack so this is an insect war and the
beneficiary of this is the plan or the
crop because we are also saving the
environment in terms of environmental
pollution we are not using chemicals but
instead we are using a biological agent
and this is a strategy that is gaining a
lot of credence today in sustainable
culture systems simply because it is a
clean technology then of course we also
have cultural control methods that have
been improved over the years then of
course we have integrated pest and
disease management which is as the name
suggests it integrates biological
control chemical control cultural
control and also physical control and
this integration is seen as
environmentally friendly and that is
basically a major element in sustainable
agricultural systems and the good thing
about integrated pest and disease
management is you you apply your control
methods if and necessary you know on
that basis not really on a prophylactic
fashion meaning to say you do not have
to apply it like an insurance okay you
don't put the chemicals or you don't put
whatever technique you are using say
biological control as an insurance to
prevent the pests from coming in but
rather you are using this approach or
the control techniques only when you
have a situation where the damage is
above a particular threshold so an
injury threshold that is necessary then
you will apply this technique and then
of course there has been improvements in
the application techniques of of these
methods for example people are today
using drones to actually spy on weak
disease okay and this is very
fascinating because you have this little
flying objects we call it drones that
can get into any of these farms and it
has got imaging
gadgets fitted to it and that it can
capture
the visuals of this particular disease
symptoms and it also has the electronics
to transfer that information to your
ground control and you can actually come
up with material procedures you see so
so this is a very advanced technique of
investigating the crop problems in the
field and initiating interventive
procedures okay now another piece of
technology that has been evolving in a
fascinating way is irrigation irrigation
has the single aim of increasing water
use efficiency we all know that water is
a resource that is depleting we we have
water issues in many parts of the world
one of the reasons behind it is because
of climate change you know we have
prolonged periods of drought and you
know agriculture is not going to move
without water so we have technologies
that have been formulated new
advancements where the water use is much
more efficient than what it used to be a
good example is we have sprinkler
techniques which are available in most
parts of the world where you can
actually apply your water using a
sprinkler mechanism where water is
spread around the field and and you can
control the timing and so forth and then
we also have another fascinating
technology that is drip irrigation drip
irrigation is has been reported to be
very efficient in most cropping systems
simply because it constantly provides
for moisture and there is no problem
about water logging and and so the
plants are able
use the moisture in a very efficient way
so drip irrigation technologies are not
cheap there are many variants of this
technology but it is highly official and
it pays off in the long term of course
these technologies allow us to
automatically schedule and monitor our
our progress in the field with regards
to moisture requirement so there are
gadgets that you can actually physically
fit into a field and that gadget can
really record your humidity and wind
speed temperature and all of this
information can then be transferred to
the manager of the field you know in a
very instantaneous manner and this will
allow for the right kind of intervention
to be exercised if and when necessary
then we also have a new technology
called precision agriculture and this is
a whole new set of I would say paradigm
shift when we say paradigm shift this is
a classic mirror of what agriculture has
changed into precision culture is really
a holistic farm management strategy
which allows for adjustment of
agricultural inputs so as to match
varying soil and crop needs and also
feel attributes so essentially what's
really happening here is you are varying
the inputs
according to what the plant or the soil
needs okay so you are customizing the
input requirement according to the plan
or the soil so there are two huge
protocols in precision agriculture the
first is the ability to quantify spatial
or temporal variability and quantifying
spatial and temporal variability is a
basic requirement in
precision culture that's the first step
now when you have established that
variability then you have to be able to
link such variability to management
actions so there's a complete suite of
technologies that are involved in
achieving these two goals of positional
culture so there are two types of
variability which we commonly deal in
agriculture one is spatial variability
and spatial variability is really the
differences across space or distance
differences here meaning it could be
yields it could be soil parameters it
could be the response of crop to a
particular environmental factor so in
this case here we have an example with
crop yields and this is actually rice an
example with rice you can see higher
yields are denoted in areas that are
dark green and and then you have lower
use in areas that are red so in between
there's two clusters of yield
profiles and out of this whole segment
of field you can see there are four
clusters of you intensity so so what's
really being shown here in this field is
the fact that you use are not
homogeneous now when your yields are not
homogeneous it really doesn't make sense
for us to apply our inputs in a
homogeneous manner so that's what
precision agriculture enforces you have
to apply your inputs based on what your
crops in the field really want or rather
how your soil really responds so in this
case here it is very obvious that we
have four clusters of he'll operating
within that field and so we should apply
our
inputs in response to this pattern okay
then of course we have another
variability which is very important in
in position a culture that is temporal
variability
now temporal variability really is the
differences across time or season so
with this example which I have here you
can see the crop yields in one
particular year if you look at the
distribution of use the high yields are
the ones denoted in in dark blue and
then you have the lower yields in brown
and and different gradations of you to a
yellow and green and the following year
you have from the same plot you have a
different yield distribution so this is
a classic example of how the yields are
different from one year to another or
other from one season to another so
again you cannot really apply a
homogenous strategy in your input
application when you have a manifested
variability like this you know so
