one that is directly opposed to the Christian understanding of God.

Christians believe in a God that created everything in six days, while atheist scientists believe that we used to be monkeys or something.

In reality, the perception of a controversy both, by Christians and the wider society,

is actually much greater than any actual controversy, and more times than not, is the result of

misunderstandings in either science or theology. When we take a closer look at what scientists and Christians are actually saying,

what we find is that our Christian faith is in fact strengthened, not challenged, by the scientific theory. This is Catholicism in Focus.

One of the biggest problems that fuels this controversy is simply a lack of understanding of what evolution is even among fairly educated people

Scientific literacy is unfortunately low for some the word evolution conjures images of an organism transforming either rapidly over a course of a lifetime

Into another organism this portrayal of evolution can be found in the world of Pokemon and it is completely false

For others evolution is best typified by the famous march of progress image Illustrated for the time life piece in 1965

Depicting evolution as a direct linear process in which species exist mutually exclusive from one another

collectively change into something else and leave their old selves behind

This is also false when scientists speak about evolution

What they're referring to is not a change in an individual organism or the linear progress of a species as a whole

What they're referring to is a change in the gene pool over time

Which gradually produces offspring of a different genetic makeup. Think of it this way

If a gene pool had two possible dominant traits say green or blue eyes

And these traits were equally distributed among the population

Those genes would be randomly passed down to the next generation with the same probability of those traits appearing in their children

Evolution has not occurred

But often there are factors that get in the way of an individual's ability to pass on its genes and the probability of certain genes

Occurring changes scientists recognize five such factors the population may shrink in size because of a change in environment or disease

Certain traits may be less attractive in finding a mate

Mutations can occur in writing genetic data to an offspring introducing new traits or affecting old ones

populations can migrate to different areas increasing or decreasing the amount of particular traits in a given area and

adaptations can occur

promoting the growth of

individuals with traits that are better suited for their

environments when any one of these factors is present certain individuals are going to be less able to live long enough to reproduce and thus

generation when this occurs at a significant level over a long period of time the probability of certain genes existing in future generations changes and

These small fluctuations in the gene pool are felt in the overall population of the species

Resulting in new physical emotional or social features becoming dominant in future generations at the same time

This doesn't mean that the species has to change or that it will all change in the same way

Because the change occurs in the reproduction of genes and not in the individual organism itself

Changes may occur in multiple different directions or even not at all

We see this divergence when a population becomes separated and isolated

Some may migrate to another lands adapt to their new environment

And change in a particular way while others may stay put and remain relatively the same

after hundreds and hundreds of generations

There would be multiple distinct species of this organism related to one another through a distant ancestor

If you've ever heard someone ask if humans evolved from monkeys why are monkeys still around this is the answer humans

That is homo sapiens are related to modern-day Apes and monkeys, but we did not evolve directly from them

Each of the modern-day species are related to one another not in a linear path

But because we share a common ancestor from which we each evolved over time in different directions

Naturally, you can see how it'd be pretty easy to misunderstand this theory or to get parts of it wrong

It is definitely precise in its language and a bit complicated resulting in confusion

It takes two to tango as they say and the controversy over evolution is not entirely the result of people misunderstanding science

Part of the problem comes on the side of Theology namely the literal interpretation of parts of Scripture

Now I've covered a lot of this material in other videos

So I'm not gonna rehash it all now

But I do want to make a few quick points when reading the book of Genesis

We have to recognize that there are two stories both written in the style of myth

They explain how the current existence came to be who God is what humanity's relationship to God is and so on

Neither the story in Genesis 1 or the 1 in Genesis 2 are meant to be scientific accounts of the world

But rather reveal the mystery of God's power to create for centuries the Christian Church understood these texts were

Allegorical in nature not to be taken at face value in the 4th century

In fact Saint Agustin even wrote that taking such an unscientific stance as to claim

The literal nature of the stories was detrimental to the faith the shame is that people outside the house?

hold of faith think our sacred writers held such opinions and the writers of our scripture are

Criticized and rejected as unlearned men if they find a Christian mistaken in the field

Which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books

How are they going to believe those books in manners concerning the resurrection of the dead?

The hope of eternal life and the Kingdom of Heaven but doesn't evolution say that humans of all from single-celled organisms

you ask God may not have created everything in a literal seven-day period

But surely he did create humans as we are, right

This is where things get really interesting in 1950 Pope Pius the 12th neither affirmed nor denied the theory of evolution

But saw no intrinsic conflict between the theory in Scripture, and thus didn't forbid

Studying it so far as it maintained that the human soul was the direct creation of God

Subsequent popes have maintained the same position with pope benedict even referring to religion and evolution as complementary realities

So while we often take that part of the text literally that god created

Separate species of animals all organized and separated as we know them now why couldn't we take that allegorically?

What's the say that we didn't evolve from single-celled organisms?

But once we evolved God ultimately

Blessed us with a spirit and consciousness that separated us from the other animals for many such a stance causes

No problem at all

And in fact actually makes our theological view of creation stronger

You see if we hold to a world without evolution a world in which things do not change over time

Our notion of creation would remain static and in the past tense God created however many years ago and everything has stayed the same

But such a statement doesn't make sense when we think about the unchanging overflowing and fecund nature of God

How could God create one day and then stop creating?

Are we saying that God created the world but doesn't create today with an evolutionary worldview

What we see is not a contradiction of faith, but in affirmation God didn't just create in the past

Every moment of every day God is creating something out of nothing

With each new birth of every organism is a genetic code that has never existed on the face of the earth

With each new being driving the species forward changing it ever so slightly

God is continuing to create as God has always done

We don't live in a static world put into motion many years ago

We live in an ever new outpouring of God's creative nature

And once you accept that then you start going down an amazing rabbit hole with people like Karl Rahner and Terre de Chardin

Completely changing the way that we view God creation and our part in it

But we don't have time for that. What we do have time for is a simple statement

Truth cannot contradict truth as we find ourselves wading in the waters of uncertainty with seemingly

Contradictory worldviews we must remember the words of st

Augustine that have been echoed for centuries if people find us contradicting something for which there is empirical evidence to support

denying what the entire scientific community accepts

How will they believe what we have to say on things without empirical evidence?

If God is the creator of all then the truth of science

And the truth of religion are not at odds with one another

But challenge us to come to a greater understanding of God than we could with only one in isolation

The answer to how the reconcile these two may not be perfectly laid out yet

But we know that it can and should be done
