it right behind me is the Kia ev6 GT

line which is the mid-grade trim for

Kia's latest sporty electric crossover

it has up to an impressive 310 M range

it can charge from 10 to 80% in just a

18 minutes it can fit your family

comfortably and according to most

everyone I've asked it looks pretty cool

too there's numerous advantages to an

electric car but of course there are

also quite a few negatives which we'll

get to later in this video but for now

let's look at the ev6 learn about what's

good and what's not that good and find

out if it's a decent choice for someone

that's looking to eliminate gasoline

from their

life I've had a lot of people come up to

to me and tell me how much they love how

this Kia looks even this paint color and

if you know me you're aware that I'm

soing tired of gray paint on cars it's

so prevalent nowadays can't we please

just have some color but even so it's

pretty nice for gray though it should be

it's a $700 option the front of the ev6

looks Super Rad with the bulging fender

flares the low Hood angling down toward

these pinched headlights I love it the

side profile is is pretty neat too this

all-wheel drive version comes with these

ginormous 20-in wheels and I'm not sure

about these door handles they look cool

but ergonomically they feel a bit odd

like your hand kind of has to be

positioned in an unnatural way to use

them I don't hate them they're just

strange now what about the design of

this rear end it's so weird I don't hate

it but it kind of reminds me of like a

frog or a snail or an alien or something

I do really appreciate that they went

off the rails here it's certainly unlike

anything I've seen on a car but here's

the thing I don't think a lot of people

realize the ev6 is a very large car much

like its Hyundai ionic 5 sibling it

photographs like a small car but in

person it's pretty giant it has the same

wheelbase as a Kelli ride so if you're

looking for a smaller car the ev6 isn't

it you might be better off with a

smaller Nero

so the first thing you notice when

sitting here in the ev6 is that it's

pretty comfortable and it's easy to find

a good driving position even if you're

tall the design looks super cool and

everything has a premium feel to it the

whole Space is a bit dark with lots of

black everywhere but look Racing Stripes

the seats have rather oddl looking

headrests that stick out pretty far but

overall the seats are pretty nice

eight-way power adjustable and they're

made from recycled mat materials

two-spoke steering wheels are pretty

uncommon today kind of reminds me of a

Mala ERA American car from the ' 70s but

it has a nice feel with intuitive

buttons and it's hard not to notice the

expansive screens right up front one in

the front of the driver and one in the

center of the vehicle Kia has done a

pretty good job of making the screen in

front of the driver relatively

distraction free simple straightforward

graphics and limited menu options okay

down here is where it gets a little bit

funky we've got another touchscreen with

contextual Dual Purpose controls by

default it's set up to control the

climate system you've got actual knobs

for the Dual Zone temperature selection

which is great and you interact with

this touchscreen for all of the other

climate functions then if you want to

access the infotainment controls you

press this toggle right here now most of

the climate controls are gone replaced

with a new set of controls for audio

radio navigation the left knob is now

volume the right is tuned and if you

press this toggle again you go back to

climate control I tend to prefer simple

controls that can be operated without

taking your eyes off the road so I was

pretty sure I was going to hate this

system but it works reasonably well and

part of this is due to the fact that it

has physical knobs you can turn and it's

certainly looks cool but it could be

better you have to take your eyes off

the road to operate it there is nothing

simpler than a few knobs that can be

turned by feel without ever having to

take your eyes off the road so Kia

system is fine but it's not better than

simple analog controls but as we know

the future looks like screens screens

and more screens speaking of screens Kia

infotainment system is easy to use with

intuitive controls and the Meridian

stereo system in this GT line sounds

awesome Apple carplay and Android auto

are standard and it looks great on this

wide display it's easy to see everything

it's positioned high on the dash so you

don't have to look too far down to

operate it right here on this center

console you've got the rotary gear

selector which is straightforward lots

of gloss black which gets icky pretty

quickly up here you've got the controls

for the ventilated seats heated seats

and steering wheel and a wireless

charger for your phone one USB port for

infotainment two for charging and two in

the rear average size sunroof above your

head speaking of head when I try to move

the sun visor from the front position to

the side position caret hits me in the

face I'm pretty tall but my seat is

almost all the way back and can't really

find a way around that in general the

ev6 is pretty roomy lots of legum big

storage pocket down below decent size

center console kind of tiny pockets in

the doors back seat has lots of leg room

and a fair amount of Headroom and hip

room a child seat fits well but it makes

seating two other adults a bit tight oh

you also get Vents and two heated seats

back here fancy cargo space is decent at

24.4 cubic feet pull these levers here

to fold the seats down and you can fit

50.2 cubic feet of your junk and up

front almost useless frunk storage it's

tiny with a car this large you think

there would be a touch more interior

space and cargo space it's still very

roomy but the exterior Dimensions don't

quite line up with the expectations of

interior space but in general even

though I have a few nitpicks Kia did a

nice job crafting a comfortable Unique

Interior let's take a look at the safety

and convenience features for the

occupants of the ev6 of course it has a

ton of airbags but there are a whole

Suite of useful features that help you

avoid crashes you also get Kia's Lan

keep and Lane follow Assist Technology

and it works really well the navigation

based smart cruise control also helps

minimize some stress on the highway when

talking about Vehicle Safety most people

think of their own safety behind the

wheel but with 7,000 pedestrians and

cyclists killed on us streets every year

car reviewers need to start talking

about the safety of those outside of the

car the collision avoidance systems in

this Kia are designed to detect

pedestrians and cyclists as well as

other cars it offers a warning system

and will apply the brakes in an

emergency situation but you shouldn't

let systems like this plate you into

thinking the car will avoid all

collisions the best way to not hit

another car or pedestrian is to slow

down to pay more attention and to be

very aware of your surroundings

especially at intersections the two most

useful safety features here are the

surround view Monitor and the blind spot

monitor when you use the turn signals

you can see a camera view of the side of

the car if you get too close to an

object car or person the surround view

will immediately turn on along with an

audible warning chime this is a

fantastic feature and if you want to

know why it's so fantastic it's because

it's pretty hard to see out of the back

of the ev6 visibility out the front is

decent because of the low Hood view out

the sides is okay but the view out the

back is just not good the windows back

there are tiny so you pretty much need

these cameras especially when parking

and when navigating around pedestrians

the ev6 is not nearly as large and

unwieldy as something like the new

Cadillac Escalade but it's still a bit

hard to see out of so these systems that

KIA has included are an extremely useful

workaround for the poor visibility out

the

rear

so compared to the Hyundai ionic 5 the

sister car to this ev6 this is supposed

to be the sportier option is it sporty

what does sporty even mean anyway it's

not like the average buyer of this car

is going to be carving canyons in this

thing or heading to the local racetrack

generally speaking sporty means slightly

firmer suspension crisp steering quick

acceleration and aggressive styling and

yes this ev6 has all of that sure it

handles better than the ionic 5 or the

Volkswagen id4 but in the real world

when you're driving your kid to school

or you're sitting in traffic on the

freeway does it really matter and for

some the sporty nature means more of the

bumps are going to be felt in the cabin

the ev6 doesn't soak them up quite as

nicely as the ionic 5 does so yes the

ev6 is sporty and if you're one of the

few people that appreciates good

handling and responsive steering you'll

probably love the ev6 it's actually kind

of fun on this back road but for

everyone else it likely doesn't really

matter that much for a family car let's

instead focus on things like range

efficiency comfort and safety both rear

wheeel drive ev6 trims can achieve an

EPA estimated 310 m of range which is

more than enough for most daily

activities and even some road trips this

gtline all-wheel drive bumps the

horsepower up from 225 to 320 so it's a

lot quicker off the line but the overall

range suffers quite a bit giving you

just 252 M range not bad if you value

the extra power or truly need all wheeel

Drive capability but if it were me I'd

opt for Less power and more range it's

estimated to get 96 MP gallon equivalent

saving you over $4,000 in fuel costs in

5 years over the average new car since I

have a Prius now it would take me a lot

longer to recoup on this investment but

if you're currently driving a gas

guzzling Suburban or Expedition jumping

up to 96 MP gallon equivalent is a big

deal right behind the steering wheel we

have two paddles and it's not to shift

gears because we don't have any gears

it's actually to adjust the level of

regeneration with Kia's ey pedal system

press the left paddle to Max and now you

have full one pedal driving drive like a

golf cart and it does come to a complete

stop I think my favorite setting is

probably level three where it has a fair

amount of regeneration it does slow you

down but it's not as aggressive as the

Mac setting if you're charging at home

on a 240 volt line it should take just

over 6 hours for a complete charge at a

DC Ultra fast charging station under

ideal conditions you can get from 10 to

80% charge in about 18 minutes that's

pretty quick with the charging port in

the rear you will have to back into some

parking spots for the charging cord to

reach the ev6 battery can also be used

as an onboard power generator so you can

annoy people in parking lots with your

terrible guitar

playing what is that what is that one

thing we should talk about is just how

damn quick off the line this vehicle is

stomp on it and you'll get pushed way

back back into your seat 0 to 60 occurs

in just about 4 and 1/2 seconds sport

mode I'm on an

uphill yeah that's just stupid that's

just ridiculous just a decade ago that

would have been Supercar territory now

we're expecting soccer dads to

responsibly wield all of this power

under their right foot but honestly it's

unnecessarily quick and this isn't even

the fast ev6 the GT is even quicker and

this is coming from a car Enthusiast

someone that likes fast cars with sports

cars you expect the vehicle to offer

overwhelmingly quick acceleration but

family cars that are this quick are

probably going to get a lot of people

into trouble but to be fair to the ev6

many of my nitpicks are about all new

cars in general lots of new vehicles

have bad blind spots and distracting

range ev6 light that starts at 426 but

it's only available in a few States so

for all intents and purposes the ev6

kind of really starts at 487 this

mid-tier GT line with e all-wheel drive

comes in at just under 58 Grand as

tested with destination charge we're

looking at over 60 Grand now this is not

an inexpensive car but to be fair the

average new car price in the US is about

48 Grand so a lower tier ev6 is right in

line with that what about monthly

payments and financing assuming you pay

MSRP with zero down a 72-month loan and

the average percentage rate for good

credit buyers the monthly payment for

this GT line as tested could be up to

over

$1,100 with a total of $80,000 spent

over the life of the loan for bad credit

buyers with the same terms the payment

could be up to $1,400 a month with

$2,000 spent over the life of the loan

It's always important to look at the

total amount spent including interest if

you have less than Stellar credit think

about if you really want to be spending

over a hundred grand for a car or if

maybe you should consider buying

something used or simply finding a way

to drive less okay so what about the

competition if you're looking at the ev6

you should probably also be looking at

the Hyundai ionic 5 which has a softer

ride but I'd argue a more interesting

exterior design you could also take a

look at the Volkswagen id4 which has a

cheaper base price and more cargo space

but the interior isn't as nice as the

ev6 or the Mustang Mach e which also has

a lower base price and arguably a nicer

interior but I think the ev6 looks way

cooler and if the ev6 is feeling a bit

too large for you the Kia Nero EV is a

good alternative so what do we think of

the ev6 there's a lot of good things

going for it yes the exterior dimensions

are a tad large compared to the usable

space inside but on the other hand it's

not stupidly large and unwieldly like a

lot of other new

SUVs Escalade I appreciate that you can

actually see out the front it's a bit

lower to the ground than other

Crossovers and SUVs the ev6 is not the

most efficient EV out there but it's not

the worst and 310 M of range for the

rear wheeel drive version is more than

enough range for most situations if you

want a practic electric car and you

actually give a about a car being

sporty the ev6 is one of the best

choices out there it's even pretty fun

on a deserted Canyon Road the interior

is nice it's comfortable it's got some

really good safety Tech and man I really

do like how it looks electric cars are

still really pricey and the ev6 is no

exception but if you can afford one you

too can get that warm and fuzzy feeling

every time you pass a gas

station

electric cars offer a range of benefits

Beyond simply avoiding gas stations

notably a positive environmental impact

through zero tailpipe emissions reducing

air pollution and greenhouse gases an

electric car emits almost three times

less CO2 than a gas car over its

lifetime and the eveve will be far

cheaper to operate over the long term

despite these advantages charging

infrastructure can still be quite

limited it really only makes sense to

own an EV if you can charge at home or

work if you live in an apartment and

only have access to public charging

stations an EV will be very difficult to

live with even with the environmental

benefits of EVS there are also some

drawbacks to consider production of

batteries involves resource intensive

mining processes that can destroy

habitat and pollute water hopefully in

the coming years we'll start to see

Greener Battery Technology emerge even

with the challenges of EV battery

production the carbon footprint of

fossil fuels is even more destructive

from crude oil extraction refining

distribution and finally burning it in

your engine and then once the fuel is

burned it's gone forever an EV battery

can be charged and recharged until the

end of its lifespan at which time it can

be recycled depending on where you live

the electricity Source used for charging

can come from fossil fuels however

renewable energy sources are on the rise

and in some places they're the primary

source of power even though there are

some significant challenges an EV is

still more environmentally friendly when

compared to a gas powered car over the
