so some of the work that community
lifeline does is that we offer again
classes that help families become more
stable such as parenting classes
job readiness job training skills we
also look at what direct services can we
provide to help our families in our
community some of those direct services
might be transportation it might be
helping them get uniforms for work or
school or
just some of the other programs that
they might need to become a very stable
family in our community
[Music]
what i want you to know about east st
louis is that east st louis is not what
you hear again east st louis is a
community of loving people who again who
have experienced a lot of destitute in
this time it's just like it's a city
that need to be constantly rebuilt but
we are a city that is loving it's not
the murder rates we are not um all of
the negative things you hear we're not
the most dangerous city we are a city
that consists of champions and a city
that consists of families who again have
just lacked opportunities sometimes and
again exposure to the positives that are
happening throughout our community
[Music]
when we speak of the broader work and
work racial equity and injustice i think
that we have to consider east st louis
as one of those foundational areas for
that work and the reason is is that
because we are in the middle of the
country we're in the the middle of
everything and so again when we bring
along east st louis and we bring along
areas like this we're all going to rise
and i think so for so often we talk
about like you say the northern parts of
the state or we talk about the northern
areas of the state but again east st
louis is a pivotal bedrock to uh the
community and what we're going to
experience and we're we're
located right across from st louis
missouri and again so how often do that
regional approach need to be taken in
order to fully um advance this the work
of east st louis and what we're trying
to do here
[Music]
it is my hope for the the radical
reimagining of east st louis for me is
that again kids are outside playing you
have grandmothers that are able to sit
on their porch and watch
the leg their legacy live again to be
able to watch businesses thrive and
survive to see families again with their
houses in order and then to have the
cars their families around them dinners
picnics celebrations just being healed
throughout the community i can imagine a
riverfront that is thriving and and just
lively i can imagine just us being able
to just go and walk down the city
streets and enjoy uh company and i can i
can see uh older men sitting out with
chess boards on the sidewalk reaching
out to the younger generations i think
again for so much of this reckoning of
our seniors have withdrawn they've gone
in and so again i can just i'm excited
to see them come back out and we'd be a
family again
if i had a magic wand and if i could
turn east st louis into anything i
wanted
i first i'm getting rid of all these
abandoned buildings
and turn it into something that
everybody could use like maybe
housing for example for homeless people
and
maybe
a mall
i know a lot of people
uh in this area don't really appreciate
that there's not a lot of
places for them to go
as far as like entertainment goes so
they have to go like out in
st louis or belleville for example just
so they can have fun
just i would probably add like parks and
stuff too
just to make the whole area a lot more
beautiful you'll be surprised how much
going bowling or to the movies it has an
impact on a teenager that's very
important those things that you can do
to more enjoy life and not try to make
sure that you can live life those are
very important those luxury or leisure
things we need more of those i would say
less buildings i don't mind
the amount of buildings that come in a
normal city but i think east st louis
would really benefit from having more of
a
in touch with nature perspective as far
as designing goes more parks maybe even
a zoo
something like that that really teaches
people about the environment around them
so they can have more of a focus on that
