Q & A
What is the first step in growing sweet peas according to the video?
-The first step is to buy sweet pea seeds, which are available in most garden stores.
Why is it necessary to moisten the seeds overnight before planting?
-Sweet pea seeds have a hard coating that needs to be moistened to soften them up, which aids in germination.
How should you prepare the container for moistening the seeds?
-You should find a shallow plastic container, cut a piece of paper towel to fit the bottom, dampen the paper towel with water without submerging the seeds, and cover the tray with cling film.
Why is it important to water the compost before placing the seeds?
-Watering the compost before placing the seeds prevents the seeds from being washed away if watered afterward.
How many seeds should you plant per compartment in the seed tray?
-You should plant one seed in each compartment of the seed tray.
What is the purpose of pinching out the growing tip of the sweet pea plants?
-Pinching out the growing tip encourages new side shoots, resulting in more stems and potentially more flowers.
Where is the best location to plant sweet peas for optimal growth?
-Sweet peas should be planted in a location that receives plenty of sunshine, such as a south-facing fence.
How do you provide support for sweet peas as they grow?
-You can make a wigwam using 4 canes placed in a square pattern and tied together at the top, or use netting as an alternative method.
What is the significance of planting sweet peas on the inside of the canes?
-Planting sweet peas on the inside of the canes ensures that they grow towards and are supported by the structure as they climb.
How often should you water the sweet peas and at what stages do you provide additional support?
-Sweet peas should be kept well watered, with a good soaking especially after planting. Additional support is needed when they reach about 30 and 60 centimeters tall, by tying garden twine around the canes.
How long does it typically take for sweet pea flowers to appear after planting the seeds?
-It takes about 10 weeks from planting the seeds for the first sweet pea flowers to appear.

🌿 Supporting Sweet Peas and Encouraging Growth
This section covers the process of supporting sweet peas as they grow. It suggests building a wigwam with four canes or using netting to support the plants, which can grow up to 8 feet tall. The method involves planting sweet peas around the canes and tying the tops together. Regular watering and tying garden twine around the canes at different growth stages provide additional support. the first step is to buy some seeds they are available in most garden stores
step 2: moisten the seeds overnight
sweet pea seeds have a hard coating that needs to be moistened in order to soften them up
find a shallow plastic container and then cut a piece of paper towel to fit into the bottom
pour in some water - just enough just to dampen the paper
place the seeds onto the paper
it is important that the seeds are not submerged in water
cover the tray with cling film and leave it in a warm place overnight
next day the seeds should have absorbed plenty of water and are now ready for planting
step 3: fill a seed tray with compost
lightly press the compost to remove any air
step 4: water the compost. We are doing this at this stage because if you watered after adding the seeds it could wash them away
step 5: place the seeds on top of the compost
place one seed in each compartment
step 6: cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost
press down firmly to remove any air that's around the seeds
always plant more seats than you need in case any fail to germinate
step 7: keep warm and watered and in about 7 days the seeds will begin to germinate
step 8 when the plants are about 10 to 15 centimetres
pinch out the growing tip just above the top leaves
the reason for this is to encourage new side shoots so that for every stem we'll get 3
step 9: plant the sweet peas outside
they need plenty of sunshine. I've chosen this south-facing fence
step 10 dig a small hole
sweet peas require plenty of moisture. My soil is not very good
I'm going to fill the hole with compost
step 11: fill the hole compost and then cover it over with topsoil
step 12: make a wigwam using 4 canes this is to support the sweet peas
while they're growing as they can grow up to 8 feet tall
an alternative method will be netting.
place the canes in a square pattern about 30 centimetres apart
and then tie the tops together
plant the sweet peas on the inside of the canes on each corner planting 2 per cane
finally give the sweet peas a good watering
make sure you give them a good soaking
when the sweet peas are about 30 centimeters tall it is time to give them support
by tying a piece of garden twine around the Canes
make sure all the sweet peas are on the inside of the support
step 15: when sweet peas are about 60 centimeters you need to tie some more garden twine around the canes
to provide additional support
again make sure the sweet peas are on the inside of the twine
step 16: keep the plants well watered and keep adding additional support as they
grow up the canes
after about 10 weeks since planting the seeds the first flowers will appear
the flowers look beautiful and give the garden a lovely sweet smell
