Q & A

  • What is the general expectation for applicants applying for postgraduate study in terms of their experiences discussed in their applications?

-Applicants should focus on experiences later in life, preferably during or after their undergraduate studies, rather than high school or earlier. The experiences should ideally be linked to the themes of climate change and sustainability, even if not directly related.

  • How important is it for an applicant's work or study to be directly related to climate change and sustainability when applying for these scholarships?

-While having a direct connection to climate change and sustainability is helpful, it's not essential. What's important is demonstrating how an applicant's skills and experiences can be applied to these issues.

  • Can leadership be demonstrated in contexts outside of formal positions like being the president of an organization?

-Yes, leadership can be interpreted broadly and demonstrated in various contexts, including instances where an applicant has influenced others and brought about change without necessarily holding a formal position.

  • What does the term 'demonstrated achievement' mean in the context of postgraduate scholarship applications?

-It refers to tangible actions and accomplishments that applicants have achieved, rather than just interests or aspirations. It's about showing what they have actually done, particularly in relation to the themes of the scholarship.

  • Why is it beneficial to put one's work in a broader context when writing an application essay?

-Putting work in a broader context helps to convey the scale and impact of an applicant's achievements, making the essay more compelling and giving a clearer picture of the applicant's capabilities.

  • How can applicants effectively quantify their achievements in their essays?

-Applicants can quantify their achievements by using numbers, such as the number of people influenced, attendees at an event, or the scale of a project in terms of time or budget.

  • What is the significance of reflecting on one's experiences in the application essay?

-Reflection shows the applicant's ability to learn from their experiences, understand the impact of their work, and how their perspectives or approaches may have evolved as a result.

  • Can you explain the STAR method mentioned in the script for structuring an application essay?

-The STAR method stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It's a structured way to describe a specific scenario, the challenges faced, the actions taken, and the outcomes achieved.

  • How should applicants address their financial needs in the scholarship application without appearing to beg?

-Applicants should focus on describing the challenges they faced in accessing education and how they overcame these barriers, demonstrating their resilience and the necessity of the scholarship for their studies.

  • What is the importance of linking past experiences, current activities, and future plans in an application essay?

-Linking these elements provides a coherent narrative that showcases the applicant's journey, growth, and how the scholarship fits into their broader goals and aspirations.

  • How can applicants avoid common pitfalls in their essays, such as lack of clarity or appearing desperate for the scholarship?

-Applicants should ensure their essays are well-prepared, free of errors, clearly explain their interest in the specific degree program, and convey a sense of having other opportunities, thus maintaining a balance between ambition and realism.

Transcripts

play00:00

something that's fairly recent uh we

play00:03

sometimes read um examples where uh

play00:07

applicants who are going for

play00:09

postgraduate study but they're talking

play00:10

about things that they did in high

play00:11

school or things where they or even

play00:14

earlier in life than that and although

play00:16

they can be interesting I think it's

play00:18

we're generally looking for things a bit

play00:20

later in life that you've done either

play00:22

during the course of your undergraduate

play00:23

study or since

play00:25

graduating uh as B mentioned our

play00:29

scholarships are themed around climate

play00:31

change and sustainability so although

play00:33

it's not essential that you've worked or

play00:37

have studied in an area that's closely

play00:39

related to climate change and

play00:40

sustainability though certainly that's

play00:43

helpful um it is important that you show

play00:46

how you might link your particular

play00:48

skills and experiences to these issues

play00:50

so perhaps you've worked primarily with

play00:53

issues relating to Refugee issues or in

play00:56

women's health you might want to reflect

play00:58

on how the particular skills that you've

play01:00

used in that area might allow you to

play01:02

help out um and address sustainability

play01:05

or climate change in some ways and and

play01:08

lastly I think sometimes people

play01:10

interpret leadership to only refer to a

play01:13

formal position that you've held like

play01:15

president of a of an organization or the

play01:18

chair of something but I think you can

play01:19

think about leadership in a much wider

play01:22

range of context to that anywhere where

play01:24

you've had an opportunity to show off

play01:25

your skills and to influence other

play01:28

people and to uh to bring about change

play01:31

so I encourage you to incorporate

play01:33

leadership uh interpret leadership

play01:36

broadly so let's think about these

play01:38

examples and and what El might make a

play01:41

good one and what you should be looking

play01:43

for um I think at postgraduate level we

play01:47

are as it's the first thing to say is we

play01:50

are looking primarily for people who

play01:52

have demonstrated achievement not just

play01:55

this is something I'm interested in this

play01:57

is something I'm aspiring to do I've

play01:59

read interesting things about

play02:00

sustainable energy I've read interesting

play02:02

things about this but we are looking to

play02:04

see things that you've actually done I

play02:07

think also um you know we appreciate

play02:10

that that comes in context we have some

play02:12

applicants who are uh you know quite

play02:14

young perhaps in their early 20s having

play02:17

just graduated and we have some older

play02:18

applicants and we understand that not

play02:20

everyone has had the same opportunity to

play02:21

contribute but we are looking

play02:23

for um things that you that you've

play02:26

actually done I think that um some

play02:29

weaker answers can often focus on and

play02:33

and give quite a good account of

play02:35

something but it's actually quite a

play02:36

small example it might be I organized a

play02:39

workshop or I I organized an event of

play02:41

some kind where it's interesting and

play02:43

it's and it's good but it's perhaps

play02:45

quite small in scale I think it can be

play02:47

better to try and put your work in a

play02:49

slightly broader context so for instance

play02:51

have you organized a range of workshops

play02:54

and and and try and tell the bigger

play02:55

story of that rather than just oh there

play02:58

was a dispute between colleagues and I

play03:00

use my leadership skills to resolve that

play03:02

I think try to think a little bit bigger

play03:03

than that I think something that goes

play03:06

along really closely with that and one

play03:08

that you'll see when I share some

play03:10

examples later on is that it's

play03:12

incredibly helpful for you to be able to

play03:15

quantify what you have done in some way

play03:18

and quantify by simply mean use numbers

play03:21

how many people did you influence how

play03:23

many people came to your event how many

play03:24

people were you managing how long did it

play03:26

go on for and sometimes we have um uh

play03:30

description of a project that sounds

play03:32

interesting but there's no way to tell

play03:33

whether this was a project that went for

play03:35

two weeks or for two years or whether it

play03:38

was a very small scale project or

play03:40

whether it was you hundreds of thousands

play03:42

of dollars so I think something that

play03:44

gives you some example of the scale of

play03:45

that is really

play03:48

important um I think

play03:51

also it's the leadership examples want

play03:54

to show ideally a bit more than just

play03:56

simply Your Capacity to deliver and

play03:58

organize something because leadership is

play04:00

a little bit more than just management

play04:03

it's

play04:03

also about reflecting your values your

play04:07

passions the things that interest you

play04:08

the things that drive you so ideally the

play04:11

example is not just I delivered on it on

play04:13

an impressive project but also the

play04:15

project represents something that I

play04:17

think is important and change that I

play04:18

think I want to bring help bring about

play04:20

in the world so I think that's an

play04:22

important aspect of that and lastly I

play04:26

would say this reflective capacity is

play04:29

very important an ability to not just

play04:31

describe what you've done uh and uh and

play04:36

and the skills that you use to do it but

play04:37

to say what you took away from that

play04:39

we're not expecting every example to be

play04:42

some kind of perfect version of of uh of

play04:45

oh everything went perfectly well it may

play04:47

be that it was a project that had lots

play04:50

of ups and downs in it complicated

play04:51

projects often do come within parts that

play04:54

go well and parts that go not so well

play04:57

and you may go in with an understanding

play04:59

of what the problem is but perhaps your

play05:02

understanding of the issue you were

play05:04

working on was changed by your work I

play05:06

think being able to show off that kind

play05:07

of those kind of skills are are really

play05:10

useful and the bit you can't see by my

play05:12

head there it says um oh let me see what

play05:14

that says it says yeah do you have uh do

play05:17

you have skills that you would like to

play05:18

grow and develop further so yeah are

play05:20

there things that yeah I felt like I was

play05:22

able to show off these leadership skills

play05:24

but there's more I have to learn as

play05:26

well so how do you do this thing is this

play05:29

if this is what's on your shopping list

play05:30

of different things you want to show off

play05:32

your reflective ability um some of the

play05:35

skills that you have but then also your

play05:37

passions and your values how can you try

play05:39

to do this well if you prepared

play05:41

professionally for a job interview or a

play05:44

similar opportunity like this you're

play05:45

probably aware of some of the kind of

play05:47

formats that are quite useful to to use

play05:50

um so what one format I would say is

play05:52

work through set out the context of what

play05:54

you're trying to do uh explain the

play05:57

problem of what the issue was that you

play06:00

faced explain what you did and and then

play06:03

explain what change happened and then

play06:05

have that reflective component uh you

play06:08

perhaps heard a very similar idea to

play06:10

this um used with a different acronym uh

play06:13

star for

play06:15

situation um task oh wait have I got

play06:19

that right situation and context I think

play06:23

the uh the task and then the action and

play06:25

then the result I think I've got that

play06:27

the right way around but this thing

play06:28

where you're taking us through in what

play06:31

is in it 250 words so you do have to be

play06:33

concise what happened what the situation

play06:36

was and how you attacked that situation

play06:39

and I think this is where it's really

play06:40

useful to particularly think about the

play06:43

context because your essays are likely

play06:45

to be read by someone who is not

play06:48

necessarily familiar with uh the country

play06:51

that you work in the country that you

play06:53

come from they may not immediately be

play06:55

able to bring to mind what it is to work

play06:57

in a Marketplace or to work in a

play06:59

business there so I think it's really

play07:01

helpful for uh for you to be able to set

play07:03

that out and that is an opportunity to

play07:05

showcase your skills for Intercultural

play07:08

communication as well so um let me look

play07:12

at a couple of different essay examples

play07:15

and talk you through those um and I'll

play07:19

I'll give you one example that I think

play07:20

is promising but that is underdeveloped

play07:23

and then I think a much stronger and

play07:25

better example there and before I do

play07:28

that just bear with me one minut

play07:41

okay let's look at that first

play07:43

example so I'm just going to read it

play07:46

it's not going to be the most exciting

play07:47

thing but I think it's important for you

play07:48

to get a sense of what we're talking

play07:49

about here okay so it's answering a

play07:52

question and these two examples are both

play07:54

going to be answering that same question

play07:56

uh and it's similar to one of the essays

play07:58

that you'll have to answer tell us about

play07:59

a scenario in which you've needed to

play08:01

show leadership how you approach this

play08:03

and what the outcomes were so it's this

play08:06

thing what we're talking about let's

play08:07

have a let's give us a single example

play08:09

and I think that's quite important in

play08:11

that it is asking for a specific

play08:13

scenario it's not asking for your

play08:16

general thoughts on leadership or what

play08:19

makes a good leader it's asking a

play08:20

specific question give us an example

play08:23

here so uh it's really important to take

play08:25

that away from the question okay let's

play08:27

go leadership being defined by how you

play08:29

lead it is inevitable your team will

play08:31

look up to you and remember how you led

play08:33

them as the women's commissioner for the

play08:35

department of social sciences 201617

play08:38

Academic Year it was my core

play08:40

responsibility to see to it that the

play08:42

welfare of the students especially

play08:43

females were addressed I realized that

play08:46

the students lacked basic knowledge on

play08:48

campus life upon gaining admission to

play08:50

the university and lack entrepreneurial

play08:52

skills hence during the Department's

play08:55

annual week celebration I invited a

play08:57

female dignitary as our resource person

play08:59

person for the program in the person of

play09:01

Dr Martina Smithson she delivered a talk

play09:04

on the topic and as a result result the

play09:07

students were able to understand the

play09:08

various mechanisms through which

play09:10

academic and social stress could be

play09:11

reduced for a better stay on campus a

play09:15

workshop uh was also organized for the

play09:17

students which gave them some

play09:19

prerequisite skills uh to help them have

play09:21

entrepreneurial opportunities aside from

play09:23

school

play09:24

work so when I look at this essay

play09:27

there's definitely some things I like

play09:28

about this it's showing an interest in

play09:30

the Affairs of others it's showing the

play09:33

ability to organize things and deliver

play09:35

something um and uh I think it's you

play09:40

know the ability to size up a situation

play09:42

and realize something was lacking and

play09:43

deliver that so I think there's quite a

play09:45

lot to like here um I think where it

play09:48

might have some limitations well for one

play09:50

thing there's a typo in there which is a

play09:52

little bit annoying a workshop was also

play09:54

organized should be organized so that's

play09:56

that's a little bit frustrating that it

play09:58

wasn't more carefully prepared comped

play09:59

there but I think more seriously it's

play10:02

quite difficult for me to judge the sort

play10:05

of the scale of this work it's talking

play10:07

about identifying an issue and then they

play10:10

organize a workshop now for the

play10:13

individual writing this it might be

play10:15

obvious to them that this was a really

play10:16

huge event but I don't know whether 10

play10:19

people came to the seminar or a thousand

play10:21

people came to it and I don't know if

play10:24

there was just a seminar or whether

play10:25

there was other events going on as well

play10:27

and because of that it's hard for me to

play10:29

give this the highest marks on this

play10:32

because I just don't exactly know enough

play10:35

about the situation and I would love

play10:37

also to see the candidate reflect a

play10:39

little bit more on what they've taken

play10:40

away from this situation if they were

play10:42

facing a similar situation in future is

play10:45

there an even better way they could have

play10:46

addressed it so I think this essay is

play10:49

okay it's certainly not disqualifying

play10:52

but I think it has its limitations here

play10:55

okay let me show you one that I think is

play10:58

better

play10:59

um same

play11:00

question uh but they've answered it in a

play11:02

different way it's a little bit it's a

play11:03

little bit longer too it's it uses the

play11:05

full 250 words I had an opportunity to

play11:09

demonstrate leadership skills during my

play11:11

internship experience as a startup

play11:12

fashion company relating to their

play11:14

manufacturing processes I was promoted

play11:17

to be the assistant manufacturing lead

play11:20

in three months where I took more

play11:21

leadership responsibilities by Leading a

play11:23

team of six so already here I'm starting

play11:26

to get a sense of scale um in that there

play11:30

I know how many people they're managing

play11:32

and and and I have a sense of what's

play11:33

going on here okay let's continue we

play11:36

were experiencing challenges within the

play11:38

team because the department lacked clear

play11:41

processes for tracking the use of

play11:42

materials such as dyes and other

play11:44

chemicals and because some members of

play11:46

the team had not been properly trained

play11:48

in the use of equipment this led to both

play11:50

additional costs using chemicals

play11:52

excessively for instance through fail

play11:54

production runs but also environmental

play11:56

problems where materials were not

play11:57

disposed of properly

play11:59

see I find this context quite helpful I

play12:01

don't know anything about fashion or

play12:03

clothing production or anything like

play12:05

that but they've explained the situation

play12:06

in a way that I can make sense of let's

play12:09

continue I worked with each member of

play12:11

the manufacturing team to identify and

play12:14

provide for their training needs and

play12:16

organized a series of five halfday

play12:18

workshops on using our equipment more

play12:20

efficiently five halfday workshops and

play12:22

starting to get a sense of the scale of

play12:24

the work that they did importantly I

play12:26

also asked the team to design targets

play12:28

producing waste I felt that the goals

play12:31

agreed by the team rather than imposed

play12:33

on them by a manager would be more

play12:35

inspiring and clearly understood I also

play12:37

participated in the recruitment process

play12:39

hiring and overseeing the induction of

play12:41

three new colleagues so I get the sense

play12:43

here also that this colleagues growing

play12:45

in

play12:45

responsibility and the way that they

play12:47

describe agreeing these targets together

play12:50

that's starting to give me a sense of

play12:51

their not just their capabilities but

play12:53

also their values as well and what they

play12:55

think what they see as leadership uh

play12:58

let's finish finish this example off

play13:00

over 6 months we were able to reduce our

play13:03

use of toxic d by 45% with a similar

play13:05

reduction in costs even as overall

play13:08

production increased since then I I've

play13:10

worked in a consultancy role with two

play13:12

other companies seeking to make similar

play13:14

changes this work has inspired me to use

play13:17

efficient business practices to make

play13:19

environmentally friendly changes and

play13:21

reminded me that collaboration and

play13:23

empowerment can be more powerful than

play13:24

top down management again I really like

play13:27

the way that I have a sense of scale I

play13:28

have a sense of what the change was but

play13:30

I also have a sense of the values and

play13:32

the passions of the person who's who's

play13:34

WR written this essay so I think this is

play13:36

a much stronger

play13:38

essay um okay let's uh let's let's wrap

play13:41

up here and make a couple of other

play13:43

observations on on what I think makes a

play13:45

strong essay

play13:49

uh um some of your essays are they're

play13:52

written in three different tenses some

play13:54

of them are asking you to write about

play13:56

things that you've done in the in in the

play13:57

past reflecting on past examples what

play13:59

you've learned from those some of them

play14:01

are will ask you to talk about things

play14:02

that happening now that you're working

play14:04

on now but it's also very important to

play14:08

show what your future plans are because

play14:09

ultimately the purpose of these

play14:11

scholarships is to help individuals

play14:13

bring about positive change in the world

play14:15

so I think that future plan is really

play14:18

important and I think for me the um you

play14:21

should be able to talk about what you're

play14:23

doing now what you've done in the past

play14:25

and what you plan to do in the future

play14:27

and it should all hang

play14:29

together um at least in the way that you

play14:31

tell the story there should be a thread

play14:33

that links these things whether it's

play14:35

skills that you've learned along the way

play14:37

or whether it's a particular interest

play14:39

that's been consistent throughout so I

play14:41

think it's useful now while you still

play14:43

have um a little bit more than well a

play14:47

month or so to submit these these essays

play14:49

and to prepare these essays to think

play14:51

about how do I want to tell my story in

play14:53

terms of what's happened in the past

play14:54

what am I doing now and what will I do

play14:56

in the future uh so think about that

play14:58

connection and I think also you want to

play15:00

be striking a balance between having an

play15:03

ambition that is impressive and to bring

play15:05

about change I think if you don't just

play15:07

want to be saying well I hope to

play15:08

graduate and I want to go back home and

play15:10

do the same thing that I'm doing now um

play15:13

but also you don't want to say I expect

play15:16

to become the president of of Nigeria

play15:18

within the next 18 months after

play15:20

graduating I think you you want to be

play15:21

able to show what is a realistic

play15:23

progression there I think just finally

play15:26

and I hope this is not finishing on a

play15:28

sort of negative note but it's worth

play15:30

noting there are a couple of common

play15:32

pitfalls and things that are unhelpful

play15:35

uh I think sometimes we do get a lot of

play15:37

essays that are just not prepared as

play15:39

carefully as they might be and I think

play15:41

it's really hard to give a score a good

play15:44

Mark to an essay that has lots of

play15:45

mistakes in it I think if you do have

play15:47

the opportunity to write it on a laptop

play15:50

where you can look through it carefully

play15:51

rather than doing it not on your phone I

play15:53

would encourage you to do that um I

play15:56

think also this this also is a big part

play15:59

of the future question we get a lot of

play16:01

essays where people say I really want to

play16:03

study abroad I've always wanted to study

play16:05

abroad and it would be really exciting

play16:08

for me it would take me to the next

play16:09

level in my career but they don't really

play16:11

explain why they want to study a

play16:14

specific degree program and it's you get

play16:17

the sense sometimes that they'd be happy

play16:18

doing almost anything so long as they

play16:20

got a chance to study abroad and I think

play16:22

the better applications show that

play16:24

they've done research into a particular

play16:25

degree program and they're able to

play16:27

demonstrate yeah this is this is how

play16:30

this is how this degree program will be

play16:32

able to help me I think lastly we

play16:34

realized that scholarships can be very

play16:36

important for uh for our applicants and

play16:39

there is a lot of pressure to get them

play16:41

but I think our strongest

play16:44

applicants um have opportunities

play16:46

elsewhere that because they have very

play16:48

impressive CVS they have very impressive

play16:50

accomplishments so I think sometimes

play16:53

when applicants communicate a sense of

play16:55

like if I didn't get get this uh there

play16:58

would be nothing for me it would be a

play17:00

disaster I think I understand um and I I

play17:03

want to be compassionate to where that

play17:05

is coming from but I think it is not

play17:06

helpful for us in that um we are are

play17:10

looking for applicants who are very well

play17:12

qualified and are likely to have

play17:13

different kind of of possibilities

play17:15

elsewhere so those are the main things

play17:18

that I wanted to share with you about

play17:20

things that I uh that I think make a

play17:23

really strong application essay as I say

play17:25

I haven't gone through all of the

play17:26

questions individually that's for you to

play17:28

do and to work out how you want to use

play17:30

those questions to tell your story but I

play17:32

hope it's given you a sense of the

play17:35

different things that would make a a

play17:37

really strong essay and and hopefully

play17:39

it's given you some ideas about how you

play17:41

want to write those questions I want to

play17:44

hand back over to faithy now as we have

play17:46

a little bit of time to both wrap up and

play17:48

answer some of your questions I

play17:55

think thank you very much pit uh we do

play17:58

have have a couple of questions in the

play18:00

Q&A um

play18:03

area which we are just going to respond

play18:05

to and then I'll wrap up the webinar so

play18:09

I'll summarize the questions real bit

play18:11

because I think they're very tgex to

play18:13

what your presentation so you spoke

play18:16

about a timeline as writing experiences

play18:20

within a timeline that is fairly

play18:22

reasoned what actually accounts for

play18:25

Fairly reason is it up to 5 years and

play18:29

then um the other question is about um

play18:32

it seems the focus of the Scholars

play18:35

Program uh in Edinburgh is big on

play18:37

climate and sustainability this year

play18:40

which anyone who has other experience

play18:43

for example you know enabling inclusive

play18:45

communities through women empowerment

play18:48

will they have uh a chance to you know

play18:51

um showcase their work in as much as our

play18:54

focus is on climate and

play18:57

sustainability

play18:59

great they're both really good questions

play19:01

and maybe I could answer the second one

play19:03

first and then come to the first one so

play19:05

yeah so question to that question that

play19:08

was like maybe I'm interested in working

play19:10

in climate change and sustainability but

play19:12

so far I've been working in a different

play19:14

area and the example you cited with

play19:16

women's empowerment and and something

play19:18

something like that have I understood

play19:19

that correct question

play19:20

correctly yeah so I guess what I would

play19:23

say there

play19:24

is um it's great and we don't expect of

play19:28

our applicants to have been climate

play19:29

activists or to have been working in

play19:31

sustainable energy or working in

play19:32

Environmental Protection or conservation

play19:34

for their whole lives people come from

play19:36

lots of different backgrounds and our

play19:37

current Scholars do but what I would

play19:40

like you to do is to show us what the

play19:43

link is shows the connection um shows

play19:46

why You' become interested in it but

play19:48

then also show how the skills that

play19:49

you've worked which could be in a very

play19:51

different area working on a different

play19:53

topic might help you for instance you

play19:55

might say one of the key things that I

play19:57

I've had to do in my current role

play19:59

working for an NGO on women's rights is

play20:01

the ability to build coalitions and to

play20:03

work with different groups of actors

play20:05

even though those they may have

play20:06

different priorities in and I think

play20:09

being able to make a case of that's also

play20:11

very important for working on climate

play20:12

change and conservation and I think

play20:14

that's one of the key skills I could

play20:15

bring or maybe your key skills are in

play20:18

Communications and presentation or maybe

play20:21

they're about rights based approaches

play20:22

and which are also very important in

play20:24

climate change so being able to show

play20:25

that

play20:26

connection um I think the other question

play20:29

was something like how long ago is too

play20:31

long

play20:33

ago uh I guess for that what I would say

play20:36

is

play20:38

um

play20:40

uh I think that we understand that

play20:42

people have taken many different paths

play20:44

including we have many applicants who

play20:46

have uh have have quite complicated

play20:48

biographies perhaps of are displaced or

play20:51

refugees work worked in different

play20:52

countries or have had other complicated

play20:54

events so we don't have a single

play20:56

template of we want to see what you've

play20:57

done in the last 12 months or we want to

play20:59

see what you've done in the last 3 years

play21:01

I think we want to hear your your

play21:03

overall story I think what I would say

play21:06

is the nature of the students that or

play21:08

the applicants that we're looking at

play21:10

people from in their basically from

play21:11

their mid 20s to mid 30s

play21:15

is uh we're asking you to reflect

play21:17

essentially on your working life and the

play21:19

things that you've done either while you

play21:20

were studying or since you were studying

play21:22

and I think if you're only citing

play21:23

examples from seven or eight years ago

play21:26

without giving some kind of of sense of

play21:29

what you've done much more recently that

play21:31

might make me think what have you been

play21:33

doing in The Last 5 Years so I think

play21:35

some kind of sense of of what you've

play21:37

been doing through your life and but I I

play21:40

I think still you can choose some

play21:42

compelling examples that aren't very

play21:44

recent but I think perhaps it's it's

play21:47

helpful to know what you've been doing

play21:48

more recently too I feel like I've not

play21:51

I've answered that question in a bit of

play21:52

a vague way but I think it depends on

play21:54

your own story I don't know if you had

play21:55

anything to add there faiy

play22:00

uh Pete you have answered the question

play22:02

uh comprehensively and I hope the other

play22:05

attendees uh feel the same so there's

play22:08

one last question um which has come up

play22:12

in other webinars and I think it will be

play22:15

important for pach to address as well

play22:17

it's around um you know the Scholars

play22:20

Program one of thep criteria is

play22:22

applicants must demonstrate financial

play22:25

needs I know you've touched on this

play22:28

but what is the best way to demonstrate

play22:31

that you are actually in need without

play22:33

appearing as if you're begging or how do

play22:36

you avoid the pitfall of begging and

play22:38

coming out as needy in this

play22:42

essay thanks it's a really interesting

play22:44

question um I guess perhaps before I

play22:47

answer it directly I just wanted to

play22:48

acknowledge that that this is a very

play22:50

sensitive question and that we're

play22:52

strangers to you you haven't had the

play22:54

chance to meet us and get to know us but

play22:56

we're asking some very personal

play22:58

questions for you and and we want to try

play23:00

to do that in a way that is respectful

play23:03

um we the foundation asks us to recruit

play23:06

students who wouldn't have an

play23:08

opportunity to study otherwise who

play23:11

wouldn't have the financial means to to

play23:13

to study overseas uh simply by asking

play23:16

their parents to pay for it um so I I

play23:21

think trying to do that in a way that is

play23:23

that feels dignified and respectful for

play23:25

you I think it is a bit of a challenge I

play23:28

think one way of doing that can be to

play23:31

talk about barriers that you faced for

play23:34

instance or barriers or difficulties

play23:36

that you faced in accessing education so

play23:39

far uh and that I think does not have to

play23:42

be told in a way where you're you feel

play23:46

like you're obliged to write a very

play23:48

emotional sub story of things that are

play23:51

of difficult problems that you've had in

play23:52

your life in a way that feels

play23:54

exploitative but it can be saying that I

play23:57

had to work parttime throughout my

play23:58

undergraduate studies and you know that

play24:01

was often very tiring and and you know I

play24:03

I had to you know I had to I had to work

play24:06

as in a restaurant to be able to afford

play24:09

textbooks or I had to do some other kind

play24:11

of work that was that was really

play24:12

difficult and that and that was

play24:13

something that was that was quite hard

play24:14

for me and I think something like that

play24:16

can both give some context to your

play24:18

academic achievements but also reassure

play24:20

is that uh you're you're somewhat

play24:23

appropriate for our scholarship in terms

play24:24

of you don't have the private means to

play24:26

be able to pay for it so think focusing

play24:28

on how you've been able to overcome

play24:30

challenges so far can be I think a

play24:33

dignified way of doing that again I

play24:34

don't know if you have anything to

play24:40

add yeah uh thank you uh thank you for

play24:43

that um well if I may add to that is

play24:48

um sometimes you know when you're when

play24:51

you're writing your there is a question

play24:53

about demonstrating Financial need you

play24:56

want to show how you don't want to

play24:58

really explain what the challenge you

play25:00

went through but mostly Dell your essay

play25:02

on showing how you overcome that

play25:05

particular challenge that just has P

play25:07

explained and so if you Dell on this I

play25:10

really um know that it will set you uh

play25:13

that particular aay part um for you so

play25:18

those are the only questions that we had

play25:21

in relation to essay um essay writing

play25:24

and um I just look through the Q section

play25:27

real quick and realize others related to

play25:30

the application process itself

play25:33

um I'm going to respond uh real quick

play25:37

but at the same time this webinar has

play25:40

been recorded and is going to be shared

play25:43

by all those who um registered to attend

play25:46

it uh we do also advise all um who are

play25:52

interested in applying for the

play25:53

scholarship to always you know check our

play25:56

socials uh and our website because we do

play25:58

have uh comprehensive information on how

play26:02

to apply for for the scholarship the E

play26:05

the FAQ section has uh a whole lot of

play26:08

other questions that uh you might uh

play26:11

find responses to as well and should you

play26:14

find that uh you have a question that is

play26:17

not responded to on the website or um

play26:20

anywhere else you always open to uh

play26:22

email us at uh mcfp

play26:26

at.

play26:29

UK thank you Pete very much and uh thank

play26:32

you all for attending uh the webinar

play26:34

today we hope that you find you found it

play26:37

very useful um in um you know Finding

play26:40

tips and strategies to submit a

play26:42

compelling application

play26:44

essay I do hope that these elements are

play26:47

going to set you apart and uh your

play26:50

applications essays are going to capture

play26:52

the attention of the admission

play26:54

committees and anybody else who will be

play26:56

involved in review doing your

play26:59

vacations thank you so much and uh have

play27:01

a good

play27:03

evening bye thank you everyone I

play27:06

appreciate your

play27:08

time
