Transcripts
- What is up Gearheads?
Welcome back to another episode
of Hammerhead Gearhead.
Noel here, and in this video
we are doing a deep dive
into this LG 34 inch, ultra wide, curved monitor.
So if you haven't seen my
quick unboxing and assembly video
click the link right here.
And as the person doing it, I assure you,
it was insanely satisfying,
and turning on that power button
for the very first time
was such a pleasure.
Now, if you have noticed something different
about image quality or my set up,
then ten points to you.
I am now using a Canon EOS R6
to film this video.
So the bad boys at Canon lent me the R6
and the Trifecta lens, so that is a 24 to 70
and they also lent me the 7200.
It is cute. It's very compact.
And the 15 to 35 lens,
so watch out for that review in this channel
so like, subscribe, and hit that
crush that notification bell.
So back to this monitor, let's dive right in.
(upbeat music)
First, the hard specs.
So it's a 34 inch ultra wide, curved monitor.
21 by 9 aspect ratio
so that's a lot of screen real estate
for those of you who need to multitask all the time.
3440 by 1440 resolution, so it's not 4K,
but for video editors, I always say that
it is a workspace monitor.
So we have the timeline, source monitor, program monitor,
and assumes that you have
a reference monitor for playback,
whether it's Atomos Sumo or your Atomos Neon.
But not to take away
from image quality though of this monitor,
it's still a stellar, so spectacular.
It's an IPS display, which basically means
that the image is consistent,
and the colors are consistent
from any viewing angle.
And then features HDR 10,
so the details from your highlights,
from your shadows, and the contrast
properly and accurately displayed.
Next, I want to highlight
some of the key features of this monitor.
So first, is the on screen control.
So once you have the software installed
all you have to do is pop it up.
And this is a very nifty tool kit, software
that you can control the monitor with.
So for example, the screen split
which I'll get into later,
monitor settings, so you don't have to
go into the hardware menu,
application presets so you can have
custom settings for each and every
application that you have so let's say for
Photoshop, for Premiere, for Word, for Excel,
that is very handy.
And game mode settings
if you're using this for gaming,
response time adjustment, and black stabilizer.
So what I love about this is that it reminds me
of the LG ThinQ App which I have on my phone
and that allows me to control
my air conditioning units, my LG TVs
even from when I'm not at home,
so I can turn on the ACU and keep the room cool
even before I get home.
So I love that about LG, because they have
incredible support software or control software
that comes with their products.
With the on screen control is screen splitting.
So this is a great feature that allows you to
compartmentalize your process
and subdivide your ultra wide monitor.
So again, with the software installed
all you have to do is click on the drop down here at OSX,
and you have preset layouts.
So for example, you can have like right now
one whole screen for one application,
or you can split it horizontally into two.
You'll have Lightroom on one
and the Photoshop on the right.
Or you could do four way so four applications,
and finally you can go up to eight even
if you so wanted to.
It's just that I only have four applications
open right now, so it's not representing
the different layouts properly.
But again, if you just want one
then you can also select that.
So this is great, because you don't have to
waste all that real estate on one application
and simulates having two monitors
and having one application for each.
Another ingenious feature is PBP
or picture by picture dual controller.
So this allows you to have two input sources
displayed at the same time on your monitor.
So right now I have my MacBook Pro
connected by a display port
and I have just off frame,
my Windows PC connected by HDMI.
So first, for it to work you have to have
one source by HDMI and another by Display Port.
So all you have to do is go into the menu,
go into PBP, just make sure the inputs
are properly configured, and PBP and split.
Takes a while to set up, but there it is.
So on the left is my windows PC
and on the right a continuation of my MacBook Pro.
Now, because they both have
the newer controller software this is why it works.
But also because they're connected via the same
WiFi or network, I can actually span both
Windows and Mac with just one mouse,
and control both with one keyboard.
So I just have this extra mouse right here
to set up the Windows PC before hand,
but you know I can just take it out and
I can continue to use it.
So, again, this is a great feature
for those who want to work with multiple sources
and as you will see later,
how I would use it for live streaming.
And of course, you can't not notice the physical features,
such as the borderless design and the arcline stand.
Which has a very small footprint,
and I love it because it allows me
to still have space underneath my monitor.
So whether I'm having a HyperDeck Mini
or my ATEM Mini Pro, or an Intuos,
I still have space and I don't have any of that
clutter that I really despise.
And it also has max audio,
because it has its own speaker system inside.
Before we move on to the practical applications
of this monitor on my work,
I want to touch on that long standing debate
or discussion between the dual monitor set up
versus the ultra wide curved monitor.
So for the record, I am of the old school.
I love my dual monitor set up.
It's really cool for me, and I grew up with it,
so I'm so used to it.
But, when I thought about it,
I realized that I do tend to turn them
slightly inwards towards me
for optimal viewing angle for two reasons.
One, that's just it. It's just better to look at.
I can see everything better.
And second, they're not IPS displays,
so the colors aren't consistent.
So I have to get that angle just right.
So basically, because I turn them inwards,
I'm simulating a curved monitor.
So when I got this, I was immediately a convert,
just like that.
But I did have some questions on Instagram
regarding distortion.
Are my images distorted when I work on them on this monitor?
Well, three things.
First, I don't notice it,
so if ever there are it's microscopic or negligible.
Second, I do tend to perfectly align this monitor
whether it's by height or by the way
it's twisted or turned towards me.
So, if you get that down right,
you tend to, I guess, forget that
there is a curvature at all.
And third, I'm a wildlife photographer, nature photographer
so no straight lines in nature,
but I do want to hear from architectural photographers.
Have you worked on your photos on a curved monitor?
What do you think, does it disrupt your
the way you perceive your images?
Or you don't like working with them entirely
or they're just perfect as it is?
So, if you are one of these please let me know
in the comments, I would love to hear what you think.
Okay, so let's get into the meat of this video
which is the actual review of this monitor.
So first, how does this monitor perform
when it comes to photography work
or photo processing to be exact?
I'm glad you asked.
So first off, this is an IPS display,
so you have here a photo of a hawksbill turtle.
There you go, oops sorry about that.
And you can see the vibrant colors.
Red, and then the blue, and green, right?
So let's put that turtle in the center.
So this is how IPS works.
So if I twist or turn the monitor away from you
or towards you, my range here is a bit limited,
but you can see that the colors remain the same
and are consistent.
You may see some differences in terms of
exposure or brightness, but that is due to this huge light
that's on me right now and reflecting on this monitor.
But that is how IPS works,
so I could be working from this angle
or the opposite angle, and the colors would remain the same.
Next, this monitor is SRGB 99% right.
So normally, you want a minimum of 96%.
What this means is that color accuracy is down pat.
So, it represents the color range or the image
as accurately as possible.
So this is how you would see it,
and it ensures that how this image will be seen
across all other SRGB devices will be almost the same.
So that is how you're viewing it right now.
And then last, is HDR 10.
So total range is very important for
underwater photographers.
Why? Because sometimes we find ourselves
shooting upwards like so.
So, you would see this big sun wall,
very very bright, but you would still want
some details on the surface.
And if you look down here in the shadows,
you still have some detail.
So it's one thing to have a camera that is
able to capture that, so I'm using a Nikon Z7,
but it's another matter entirely
for you to have a monitor that represents it
or shows it to you accurately.
So if you don't have that other part then
the battle is almost lost honestly.
So this monitor itself is professional grade.
This is what we ask for and this is
what we need for what we do.
On top of that, if I wanted to let's say,
work on Photoshop as well,
so I'd normally do my edits on Lightroom,
but I also do the sharpening in Photoshop.
So we go to screen split,
and now let's say I export this in Photoshop,
I can work on it here and then
see my edits updated here on the side.
So it adds that efficient, multitasking
capabilities to your work or to your pipeline.
Next up, is video editing and animation,
and I personally believe that
this is what ultra wide monitors are made for.
Because video editing let's say on Premier,
on Final Cut, or DaVinci, or animating in After Effects,
these are time based work spaces
where you need a wide canvas for your timeline,
so you can see more of your video at a glance.
So as you can see here, this is my last review
on the 8 to 15 fish eye for Nikon.
You can check the video right here.
And I can scrub through the whole thing.
Makes the process a lot easier, and it's more efficient.
And now I'm simulating how our reference monitor
would go with this ultra wide monitor.
So this is my workspace,
and then played back would be let's say again,
on an Atomos Sumo or Neon right here,
so it's the perfect tandem.
And if I wanted to, let's say,
add titles, I could use screen split again
to have both Premiere and After effects
on the same screen.
So it makes multi tasking so much easier, yet again.
Next, let me show you how this
ultra wide monitor is best suited, if not perfect,
for live streaming.
So when I do live streams, I have two work stations.
A control work station,
and a streaming work station.
And ever since I got this monitor,
I have both synced up or connected to this baby.
So, right here on this work station
or at least this display,
is my ATEM Software control for
controlling my ATEM Mini Pro and my HyperDeck Studio Mini.
So the ATEM is the Mini Pro is for switching HDMI,
and the HyperDeck is for playing back video.
And if you connect it to the Mini Pro,
it acts like another camera.
Now, I don't have the actual software,
because I don't have the gear here.
So this is actually an image from the web,
but you know, it should do.
And then, on the ultra wide itself,
I use clean split to subdivide it into four.
So I have OBS, and then I have my Script,
and then YouTube Live Studio,
and then Live Producer for Facebook.
So I can see everything at a glance.
And then finally, on the streaming work station
would be StreamYard, which is a cost efficient way
to show comments from YouTube and Facebook Live on screen.
So that's why I use that.
So what features make this work?
So again, screen split subdivides the screen,
and dual controller, because now I can control
both work stations with just one keyboard and one mouse.
And this enables me, this is it!
This enables me to live stream professionally
from the comfort of my own home.
Lastly, and it's going to be a sin for me
not to mention this.
The ultra wide is also great for watching films,
gaming, and other downtime activities.
So, for example, watching videos like the Mandalorian
that was filmed in 2.35 is to 1
or 21 by 9 aspect ratio,
there are no bars at the top and the bottom.
So it's a more immersive and enveloping experience.
Next, for gaming I am a big fan of
Thrones of Britannia or Total War,
the whole franchise.
So you can see I have a bigger space to see my map.
Again, more immersive,
and one thing though you have to be very careful of
is that a wider screen means more pixels.
So make sure that you have
a strong enough computer graphics card
for, let's say, playing FPS games and such.
Lastly, let's say I would like to watch a tutorial.
I could play the tutorial on one side,
and then using screen split I could have Photoshop,
or the corresponding software on the right.
So, again, I would have to say
I get to use this monitor 100% of the time,
both for work and for playing.
Okay, so I've outlined all the
features and strengths of this monitor,
and how it helps me a lot with my work.
How about improvements?
What are the aspects that I wish that
LG worked on a bit more?
Just one, and it's very minor,
and very polarizing and controversial.
It's just the manual.
I'm a big nerd, so I read manuals from cover to cover.
And this monitor did come with some documentations,
but it was more about flyers in the form of flyers,
and more on assembly warnings,
rather than the operation of the monitor itself.
It did come with a CD, but come on, it's 2020.
Who has CD drives?
Fortunately I did, or I do,
and I popped it into my Windows PC,
accessed it, and transferred it as well to my Mac.
And it was very cumbersome to access,
and it didn't have, if I'm not mistaken,
anything on the software features,
or maybe I had a hard time accessing it.
So when it comes to the PBP dual controller,
and the screen split,
I actually had to search online for
tutorials on YouTube on how to make it work properly.
So, I just wish that for future units or future models
LG would just have everything on one USB.
Everything accessible through that USB.
Although I know software can be dated,
you could download it eventually anyway,
but at least you have everything from the get go.
So, other than that,
there's nothing else that I'm crying about,
because this monitor is awesome as it is.
And so we've reached the end of this deep dive
into this LG 34 inch ultra wide monitor.
So, LG thank you very much for this.
It has improved all my workflow exponentially,
and it has allowed me to do more within this ecosystem
here in my home, just by myself.
So again, thank you.
For you guys, I want to hear your thoughts.
Is this something that you would like to
add to your studio or for gaming,
or is it an unnecessary expense?
Make yourself heard in the comments.
I want to hear what you think.
