would you like to know how to actually
increase Book Sales on Amazon here are
five critical elements to selling more
books and reaching more readers the book
cover design is the barrier of Entry the
biggest barrier of Entry that you could
possibly have in this business because
if you do not have a good book cover
readers are going to pass on it I know
there are a fraction of some readers
that don't care they just want to read a
book and they're just going to be done
with it but the fact is if you have some
JoJo looking cover then chances are
super likely that a vast majority of
readers are going to pass so this is
where you got to get it really really
dialed in in fact there's a really good
piece by a company called rezy over
rey.com it's called can a professional
book cover double your sales and now
they ran this experiment with two ads
over a week for seven different niches
and both ads were identical except for
the cover image they had the original
one which was kind of a DIY one and then
they have the professional one now each
variant was served to over 1,000 users
from the same audience set now they
measured the success by the number of
clicks because here's the thing when it
comes to paid ads if someone doesn't
click on that ad chances are likely
first of all they're the wrong target
which that's is very likely or it's just
not enticing enough they need to see
something you know with imagery that
could really capture their attention and
Spark imagination and go I want to go
take a look at that now with the the
exception of one Niche with a 9% decline
in clicks the rest of the niches
averaged about 64% increase in clicks
showing that a professional cover design
made all the difference in the world I
know there are a lot of folks that are
working on a fixed budget or they just
love being creative so where can someone
find affordable options for cover design
now my recommendations go for a good
better best model here you can start out
with a good with fivr Fiverr has a ton
of different cover design gigs out there
in fact I've done a number of videos
about them in the past you could start
out for about five bucks for an ebook
cover going up even more into the
hundreds if not thousands if you wanted
to over on Fiverr now I've got a full
list of curated designers that I've
worked with so if you see that they're
on my list then chances are they've been
vetted and I wholeheartedly stand behind
them now the next one is get covers this
one I don't know what it is but a lot of
people are sleeping on it it's get
covers offers
$10 and I think it's $20 and then $35
that's like literally how much it costs
for the cover designs now you can get a
bunch of extra add-ons but $10 for an
ebook cover design it's really good and
I've done a number of videos about these
guys again get covers fantastic my
preferred one this is on the best model
it's a bit more pricey yes I understand
but boy oh you get the goods on it it's
MBL now they're pack I could just start
I know hanging there for about $220 or
more now side note if you use the coupon
code Dale 10 you can get 10% off your
next order but mble art does fantastic
work in fact so much so that I have them
doing my entire upcoming series here for
self-publishing with Dale and they just
did my latest publication more about
that here in a little bit and by the way
these aren't the only options I totally
understand that there are other options
out there that are worth exploring just
consider what your budget is and think
about it time versus money if you must
do it on your own lean on your network
or peers in the industry to give you
honest feedback to improve your cover
design heck over on Discord in my
community I have an entire Channel
devoted to that come on over at D
links.com Discord now while I'm not a
fan of authors doing their own book
covers I totally understand that it
might be cost prohibitive of or it's
just some authors really like to do it
they have a good eye for graphic design
my buddy Ross bran he's excellent at
graphic design I I've seen him create a
couple of cover designs and thumbnails
for YouTube videos and I think man
that's really good but that's usually
the exception to the rule by and large a
lot of authors know how to write like
maniacs they do great at that but as
soon as you put them behind some type of
Photoshop or or photo or any of
those other things or even using canva
for a cover design it comes out looking
very amateur you save yourself the time
and the heartache High out it is so
worth it number two marketing copy all
right here's the thing you hear me say
marketing copy it's in reference to the
book description this is where you need
to convince browsing customers to buy
your book so we got the greatest barrier
of entry in the book cover design we see
that people are clicking through and
they're taking a look at our product
page but if they're not buying then
chances are you have not given them
compelling enough information to buy
your book so this is where I see a lot
of authors struggling because they treat
their book descriptions as a synopsis or
a summary and it should not be that so
how should authors treat the book
description well like marketing copy as
I kind of mentioned before here you want
to get it to where you're giving a
compelling reason for them to do that
now here are five tips to create
compelling copy for your book
description first of all number One
never give all the details just tease
the details I see far too often people
are putting full names in there and
talking about the whole premise of the
story you got to hook them you need to
get it to where you entice them because
if you give everything to them they're
going to say ah it's probably not my
thing and speaking of hooking them lead
with a short hook and when I mean a
short hook we're talking no longer than
five to six words in a single line to
open up your book description I know
there are going to be some other experts
out there that like to do it other ways
but I found by and large a short Hook is
always the best type of a hook the next
one is avoid giant blocks of text if you
have a giant paragraph and there's no
line breaks there's no actual space in
between some of the stuff it's not going
to compel readers to stop and well read
it and so that's where you're going to
want to make sure you're breaking up
those blocks of text and you're getting
it to where it's easily readable and
easily digestible at just a quick glance
number four organically weave keywords
into your book description that way you
make your book more discoverable now
there's some type of a narrative here on
YouTube of some content creators going
out of their way saying that book
descriptions are not indexable over on
Amazon I'm not sure where they got their
information from but to my knowledge it
is fully indexable it is fully
discoverable and despite any any type of
you know specific split test that you've
tried on your own there is actually a
word cloud Associated to your book
description which will make it more
discoverable not to mention the fact
that anytime a browsing customer
searches up your book description let's
just say it didn't come up by the
keywords but the nice thing is having
those keywords within your book
description validates that customers
search that gives them the irrefutable
proof that your book is the right book
so organically weave those keywords into
your book to description now I typically
man I used to grind it out and just bang
my head against the wall trying to put
some keywords into a book description
without sounding too rigid or robotic
now this is going to sound crazy when I
recommend this but artificial
intelligence helps out on this big time
you can get some free service through
chat GPT 3.5 versions totally fine and
you can get some assistance with chat
GPT just load it up with any of your
previous book descriptions or book
descriptions that you like in the format
train it on that give it the keywords
that you want and all the relevant
details and say hey make this book
description for me I want you to include
these keywords and then let it run and
you can always just go in and edit it as
you see fit I always believe artificial
intelligence always needs human
intervention and last but not least
close out with a call to action keep the
call to action simple don't treat your
readers like they're idiots yes they
know they need to scroll up and they
know they need to hit the buy button
just keep it simple three words buy it
now that simple number three
keywords okay so keywords this is almost
always the the point of contention for
many people um but you will notice that
I didn't put it at the top of this list
because those two are the most important
is if you are discoverable but have a
garbage cover and garbage copy it
doesn't matter what happens you will not
be able to build any relevance in Amazon
algorithms if you are not getting the
sales so keywords are going to make you
more discoverable but make sure you get
those first two elements dialed in now
keyword got to bring it back to the
basics here it's a term or phrase that
identifies what browsing customers
search online so this means it could be
as simple as a word like Fitness or at
home fitness workouts see how it's short
and long those keywords can be anywhere
from a single term to an entire phrase
so where do keywords go now the top
spots to kind of put them in will be the
title subtitle or series name for
whatever reason there's magic that
happens when you put some keywords in
your title subtitle and series name it
makes it more discoverable in that
regard the next spot you're going to
want to put it in is well the book
description I've already kind of given
you an idea about book descriptions and
putting the keywords in there with
something like chat GPT another option
you can look into is one of my favorite
companies in dibl create they also have
a book description generator and they
also have some keyword analysis tools
that you can look into or you can just
bang your head against the wall till it
all fits in um yeah well good luck on
that one I wouldn't recommend it now the
other spot that we have is the seven
backend keywords now I'm going to break
it down very briefly just to give an
overview of what you want to do in two
of these spots you want to have category
specific keywords now I'm not not saying
that you take a category you select it
and you find one of the keywords within
it think about any keywords that would
be related to that something that would
be similar you know uh a synonym if you
will that you're going to end up putting
into there because you don't want to be
redundant if you're already inside a
category or have chosen a browse path
with specific keyword terms inside them
now publisher rocket I'm going to
mention them here in just a second is a
great resource because you can research
your categories and then in the category
themselves they have some keywords
associated with it in fact the
kindlepreneur Dave chassen was one of
the first people to recommend doing this
so that way when you selected a category
KDP would not reject you using that now
the other boxes are going to include two
to three exact match keywords meaning
that you put a keyword in there and
that's it so let's just say for instance
it's home workout plans for seniors you
just keep it there you don't put
anything else in there now the other two
to three you're going to do a broad
match keyword where you can kind of
stuff it up to the brim just look for
any type of keywords with overlap and
put them into the same blocks I would
not recommend putting nonlinear keywords
into a single box because that could
potentially confuse the Amazon
algorithms you want to get it to where
it's less confusion less friction two
great tools for keyword research and
refinement I already mentioned one of
them in dibl create they have something
that's called Amazon keyword analysis
and book analysis and literally all you
have to do is drop in a keyword and it
will bring up all the different books
and all of the different keywords that
are associated with that given book and
the same thing happens for a book
analysis if for some reason you have a
competitor or or peer within your Niche
that you want to figure out what they're
leveraging for keywords you just drop in
they're Asin and then boom dibl comes
right back with it now the other tool
that I like to use in tandem with create
is publisher rocket now publisher rocket
does come at a bit of a higher premium
but I'm telling you it's lifetime access
you get all the upgrades it's fantastic
I will take the keywords that I have
picked up from dibl create and I pop it
on into publisher rocket for proof of
concept I'm looking for those keywords
they're going to have low competition
but High search volume at least having
the high search volume and I'm looking
for something that's anywhere
above 200 searches per month potentially
1,000 searches per month it just depends
on how popular your Niche is even as an
established author understanding the
fundamentals of self-publishing is
crucial to staying ahead in the ever
evolving publishing landscape in my
latest book self-publishing for new
Authors you get a comprehensive guide
that breaks down the entire process
making it an invaluable resource for
authors like you and even newcomers to
this business recent reviews shared how
the book is an invaluable resource for
anyone looking to navigate the often
daunting world of self-publishing taale
breaks down the process into manageable
steps making it accessible even for
those with no prior experience in
another one it said self-publishing for
new Authors is like having a personal
Mentor guiding you through the complex
journey of
self-publishing and live stream Universe
host podcaster and award-winning author
Ross bran shared once you read this book
you'll have a solid handle on what you
need to do to succeed as a
self-published author grab a copy today
at every major online retailer when you
visit da links.com new Authors available
in ebook paperback and hard cover with
audiobook on the way and a video course
in the works again that's Del links.com
neww authors number four promotions and
promoting all right so I think you've
heard me say this time and again that
you must stay visible if you expect to
get any type of sales being as visible
as possible is the name of the game when
it comes to marketing and promoting your
book and your brand a lot of people
think that you need to have money to do
this but the thing is there are so many
free promotional options out there heck
I've done so many videos about this over
the years just dip back into my my back
catalog I got like 900 videos here on
this channel the free promotional
options tap into those first I highly
recommend it the very first thing right
out the gate every author needs this
with no exception you can remove social
media that's fine I don't care about
that you don't need to go to all these
different forums and such but what you
do need is an email list email marketing
is dead simple it's really not as hard
as some people would make it out to be
even for newbies I'm going to recommend
a few of the different services and it's
up to you to kind of parse through what
makes sense for you I personally lean
into mailer light because they will
provide all you need to up to a th000
subscribers you hit a th000 subscribers
chances are super likely you'll be able
to monetize that and pay for that
upgrade so the part of Education though
if you're kind of reluctant on it mailer
light actually provides a free course
100% free free 99 if you will in fact
Dave chessen the kindlepreneur offers a
free course about mailer light as well
it is really simple even for those that
are not very techsavvy if you've made it
this far into this video on YouTube
itself then give yourself some credit it
is that easy you're just going to need
to take a little time to learn it and if
you don't learn it well you won't ever
be able to apply it and won't be able to
reap the benefits from something like
this MailChimp also offers uh a certain
amount of features up to a th000
subscribers and then more recently great
company uh convert kit they offer up to
10,000 subscribers they just unlocked
that recently like they just saw
everybody else doing a thousand
subscribers and they're like hold my
beer and they just put an extra zero on
there somebody somebody in the marketing
department over convert kit was just
like whoops did I put an extra zero
behind that and that's to say that
they're giving you as much as you need
to succeed and you'll be able to find so
many different tutorials whether through
mailer light MailChimp convert kit on
places like YouTube online forums even
through the services themselves so so
worth it and when you have an email list
you could start to work with author
collaborations now author collaborations
could be something as simple as a
newsletter swap where you will share
something of an author in exchange they
will share something of yours and
there's also group promos which is
essentially like newsletter swaps on
steroids where you guys all get together
for a giant promotion maybe it's like a
discount of all your ebooks and
everybody wins Big on something like
that there's also options like little
free libraries I had actually done a
full video about this where I took out
31 different books to 30 different
little Free Library locations throughout
my area here in Columbus and yes we
could make the argument that's not free
because you have to pay for the proof in
order to go ahead and deliver that but
chances are very likely if you've got
one book on hand and it's just sitting
there collecting dust um might I
recommend you put that into somebody's
hands and not just keep it for yourself
get it out there little free libraries
fantastic I've got a link to that video
down inside the description if you want
to go watch that because it's a really
fun little case study now speaking of
fun little case studies a former guest
of my podcast and also good friend Susan
Montgomery had shared in our Discord
Community recently how she's just
crushing it she landed radio interviews
she's been on podcasts this woman is
admittedly has said she's an introvert
she's not big into getting out there and
doing these type of things but when she
finally did it it was a rush for her so
re Rec L she published a book that was
very much cat themed if you will sorry
Susan if I got a little bit off but in
Bowling Green in her hometown there is a
cat rescue where she actually put
together a an event where it's going to
be an author signing and reading at this
cat rescue location so it didn't cost
her a dime and there promoting this
event for people to come in so this is a
win for everybody across the board think
about how you can reach out to any local
you know animal shelters if that's the
case or local businesses or even
libraries libraries are always looking
for workshops or even author signings or
even author readings if you're a
children's book author what are you
doing get over to the local libraries or
even schools uh local media also another
great option to to look into uh you're
going to want to reach out to any of the
radio stations TV stations anybody that
is relevant in your area that can get
you in front of more people the thing is
being an author is a very special thing
and all you need to do is share the fact
that you've got a book and it's
newsworthy information and especially if
you got good timing then getting
yourself in front of them is going to do
a great service to the news provider and
for you now there are other options you
can look into like blogs guest blogs
author interviews podcast interviews and
so much more but for the sake of keeping
things brief here let's switch over to
paid promotional options now there are a
number of options out there what I would
recommend to you very first thing right
out the gate this is off top of my head
here the alliance of independent authors
offers a service called Watchdog it's
the Watchdog list and you can get that
at D links.com
Watchdog and you can search through some
of these Services the paid promotional
options that are vetted and approved by
Indie authors because Alliance of
independent authors is run by Indie
authors for Indie authors they have your
best interests at heart and as long as
those companies are following the code
of ethics that Ally relies on then
they're going to get behind them so
you'll find certain companies like
written word media or crave books in
that list where they've been giving an
endorsement and I wouldn't say it's an
endorsement per se but more like it's
safe it's good to go so that is one
option and by the way I've used both
written word media and crave books
fantastic good results relatively
inexpensive now I've used Fiverr in the
past with some mixed results it's going
to vary from time to time I wouldn't
recommend putting a ton of money if
you're hiring somebody on Fiverr to
promote your book it's good to test out
some of it works some of it doesn't it
varies uh again I've already shared the
link for the Fiverr list that I have
there are a couple of those that I've
used in the past in that list now the
best option for paid advertising is
going to be Amazon advertising it is a
natively built you know service it is
perfect for that sure we could lean over
on Facebook ads or even Google ads of
some sort but Amazon advertising you are
going directly into the Amazon platform
where there is a warm audience an
audience that is ready to buy your book
and buy products I would recommend if
you're breaking into Amazon advertising
stick with a nice low budget when I say
low budget embarrassingly low $1 and
keep the cost per click very low I don't
know like 10 to 25 cents are you going
to get magnificent results no you're
just going to learn the process and
during that process of learning I highly
recommend that you take the Amazon
advertising certification courses
they're 100% free they're available
inside your dashboard and they're always
updating it every year and you can even
get yourself certified which is really
kind of cool now I would recommend you
start out with sponsored product ads you
could start it out with automated ads
which means the automated targeting you
let Amazon Take the Wheel when you're
doing that you're going to go through
and identify any low performing targets
or keywords or products and you're going
to put that onto a negative list and
then you're going to find any of the
targets like the keywords or products
and you're going to put that onto
another list if they are performing
really well if they're selling some and
then you can start to build out some
sponsored product ads with the manual
targeting which to me I believe manual
targeting is the best for best bang for
your buck uh or you could skip to the
manual ads with Publisher Rocket's
latest feature publisher rocket just
recently updated their Amazon
advertising feature and it's really cool
because you can take your Asin you plop
it into their little engine there and it
will recommend very laser focused
targets for your ad campaign it could be
something as simple as keywords it could
be books it could be authors it could be
categories and you can handpick those
things that's the thing that you need to
pay closest attention to is if you're
putting these ads together make sure
that you're not putting so many targets
together that the ad doesn't know where
to serve get it limited I mean we're
talking below 100 below 50 if you can
because the more specific you can be the
better that ad's going to perform number
five get more book reviews okay so the
value of book reviews every every body's
heard it time and again it's social
proof it's third-party credibility sure
you could tell the world that you are
the next best thing to slice bread and
peanut butter for crying out loud but
the thing is a lot of people are going
to look at that as being braggadocious
you're going to want to lean on readers
to do that and that's why book reviews
are so critical now if you've picked up
a copy of or read my latest book self
publishing for new Authors leave a
review at any major online retailer or
visit d links.com review self-pub all
right now that I've got the Shameless
self-promotion out the way why should
you be doing this third-party
credibility it is great but here's the
thing according to Amazon over
91% of customers on their platform read
the reviews before making a purchase and
they recommend in order to be retail
ready that you should have 15 reviews
and well hang on are you getting a sense
of deja vu if not check out this next
video where I explain the value of
getting reviews and what you need to do
to load up on as many reviews as
possible or check out this other video
where I shared how story ad provides you
with a database of over 40,000 people
businesses and services I'll see you in
either video
