now how do we connect this to the
investigation skills students require
investigation skills because this is the
ability to research analyze and
understand various aspect pects of
sustainability challenges now what does
this involve the first thing is data
collection and Analysis we need to
gather relevant data from diverse
sources it's not enough that we just get
the information through hey we need to
collect relevant and authentic data and
we should also be able to interpret
statistical information and identify the
trends and the patterns now to do all
these things students require critical
thinking everything cannot be spoonfed
in the classes they should be able to
assess the validity and reliability of
information especially because it is uh
information overload now because of the
easy availability of information on the
internet there can be information which
is not authentic so students should be
able to distinguish between facts and
opinions and evaluate the sources of
information once they do this this will
lead to problem identification recognize
and Define sustainability problems
understand what are the causes and what
is the impact of these so all these
require students to be up toate with
investigation skills now the second
skill that Learners should cultivate is
the skill to Envision alternative
Futures now that is very important we
can't do things in haste and then repent
at leisure because there is no chance
for us there is not going to be a second
chance we need to think carefully
whether what we are doing now is going
to cause harm in the distant future Now
by distant future I don't mean many
generations later it could even be 5
years from now 10 years from now at the
rate at which climate changes are
occurring at the rate at which many
different problems and challenges are
being seen and felt by all of us the the
time to Envision alternative Futures is
for our own betterment so this involves
the capacity to imagine different
scenarios and Pathways for a sustainable
future if I do this what would happen if
I don't do this now what can happen
later so this calls for creative
thinking because if you have to look at
problems from a future point of view you
need to have the ability to think
creatively you need to generate
innovative ideas and solutions that
challenges the status quo now and for
this we need to plan for the scenarios
so that's called scenario planning that
involves developing and analyzing
potential future scenarios
based on current trends and variables
I'll just give you an example we need to
think if I were to cut down all the
trees now what would I do would I be
sitting in a hot gas chamber I may have
a beautiful building I may have glass
buildings where my offices are housed
but what am I going to be doing sitting
there it's going to affect the climate
patterns it is going to increase the
temperature in the locality so is it
worth it
what can I do in order to prevent that
so we need to Envision that's called
visioning which means creating a clear
and compelling vision of a sustainable
future which can guide decision making
and action right now it's very important
for us to plan for our future we can't
act now and then without a definite plan
and then regret later the skill for
planning and action taking is very
essential because if you have to
implement Sustainable Solutions the
first thing that it should include is
strategic
planning that is setting long-term goals
we need to look at the long-term goal
and see what can
happen if this action of mind today what
can it result in later on and this would
help us to to develop the strategies to
achieve them and this would help us to
prioritize our
actions and for this what is very
essential is we need to have a project
management organizing resources managing
time and budgets and coordinating the
tasks to effectively execute
sustainability initiatives now only when
all these are in place can we move on on
to the implementation stage that is
putting the plan into
action then you mobilize stakeholders
you adapt to the changing circumstances
see without doing this if you start
doing something for just the immediate
present it is like building a road and
then you say no no later on many other
people would be using it therefore we
need to cut down this and do something
else we can't keep doing it when you're
planning for a city or when you're
developing a place so you need to put
all these skills in place and it is
important for our Learners to understand
the importance of each one of these
skills and then comes the evaluation
skill this involves the ability to
assess the effectiveness of
sustainability initiatives and then make
improvements if there is any Gap we can
fill in the Gap and make improvements
what would this include this would
involve monitoring and assessment we
need to continuously monitor track the
progress measure the outcomes and
compare these results against the
objectives that we had set in the
beginning are we achieving it what is
the feedback and learning from all this
after collecting and analyzing the
feedback we understand the successes and
failures and then we apply these lessons
which we have learned learned to Future
projects so this is our learning curve
this is how we learn and we avoid now
you can see how far from reality we are
when we are implementing different
things in this country and then of
course comes the impact analysis we
evaluate the environmental the social
and the economic impact of all these
actions to ensure that they contribute
to to sustainability goals in order to
make our Learners understand the
importance of these skills what is the
first thing that is important we as
Educators we should have the knowledge
and the skills if only if we have these
we will be able to plan the curricula
accordingly and we will be able to
select the Learning Materials according
to this plan and then we can of course
plan our learning experience es to build
around these goals and these objectives
it is important for us to do this as
Educators be prepared so that our
Learners can achieve a wide range of
knowledge they are able to develop their
thinking and decision making skills
cultivate the right values and also
exhibit the attitude that is required
for going through these skills and most
important importantly they should be
able to be a good citizen so citizenship
objectives also form part of this grand
scheme of things and as Learners you
should know that sustainability skills
are future proofing your
careers in a demanding job market it is
not enough for you to just come out with
your degrees just imagine the number of
graduates who come out of the
universities and colleges the portals of
higher education in this country in what
way do you have an edge over the others
Industries are increasingly prioritizing
sustainability they demand professionals
with sustainability skills they want to
know what is it extra that you know
apart from what is being taught or what
was taught in your
classes so knowledge in this area is
very important for all of you
students because it makes you more
competitive in the job market and gives
you an edge over the others who also
apply for the same job Innovation and
Leadership understanding
sustainability equips you all to become
innovators and leaders in developing
Sustainable Solutions when you are able
to come out with solutions that is what
every company expects every institution
expects you to do not just stand there
and say I don't know there is a problem
how do I go about it your manager would
appreciate and make you a valuable asset
if you go to him and say this is the
problem and these are all the solutions
he would appreciate that and
environmental sustainability you become
stewards because you are able to
understand about all these challenges
that are there in the environment and
you are trying to take steps to mitigate
it sustain ability skills would also
teach you to use your resources very
very efficiently and responsibly you are
promoting the conservation and you're
also reducing waste so this leads you to
a social responsibility you become
socially responsible see how wonderful
each one of you becomes you become an
asset you are doing something beyond the
call of your textbooks or beyond the
call of what is being taught in the
schools and
colleges you become ethically aware so
learning about sustainability Fosters a
sense of responsibility towards the
environment and Society now this would
help you to make ethical decisions and
this would definitely benefit the planet
in the long run and of course the future
Generations would thank you a lot for
the things for your consideration with
which you're using the resources now you
can also use these sustainability skills
to improve your
communities whether through local
initiatives or participate in global
advocacy programs all these make you a
valuable asset to your institution to
the place where you're studying to the
place where you're working and to the
society where you're living because you
are able to make an impact in your own
local community
and above all it leads to personal
development knowledge about
sustainability empowers you it forces
you to take action and your own lives
become an example for others because you
make choices which contribute to a
healthier planet that is very important
and of course you're able to look at it
with a lens of a Global Perspective your
able to understand that sustainability
would help you grasp the global nature
of environmental
issues it Fosters a sense of global
citizenship and you're able to
collaborate across borders we know now
that nothing can be done individually by
us the problems that we Face may be
because of something that has happened
elsewhere so we need to find a
collaborative means to find fight these
issues so this way these sustainability
skills will help you in your career
prospects but it also helps you to
contribute to creating a more
sustainable and Equitable world
