and um so this is our all this our off

uh my name is Ryan McCormack uh I am a

kumula here on the island of Havi um I

live in Puna um just down the down the

volcano from us and this is where we

practice our our hola um at my house but

I was born on the island of Oahu in W

Manalo um I've lived here for 16 years I

came here to study with my teacher

tangaro and I became a Kula and now this

is my home I went on a journey and I

came to this island and started to learn

under tangar um and and now now I get to

teach

hoola

hoola has and continues to have a really

important role in maintaining ceremony

in

Havi um creating space to acknowledge

the sacred and prayer um acknowledging

the

ancestors and acknowledging the elements

the akua was a part of daily life in ha

so today hola is um sometimes used as a

way to bring ceremony back into our

lives today so what you saw today is not

necessarily um an ancient Hawaiian

ceremony that was done for centuries and

centuries um this

is us using some of the very old tools

that we have to communicate with our

landscape to communicate with our

ancestors so I guess um before I go into

what the ceremony means to me I think

it's important for me to state that um I

certainly do not speak on behalf of all

hoola people I can only explain the way

it makes sense to me in my practice so

we just completed um right before this

recording um a ceremony with some of my

hoola dancers uh to mark this day which

is the summer solstice but as I

explained though

um a long time ago we were much more in

rhythm with the land rhythm with the

rising of the Sun the falling of the Sun

the changing of the moon phases the

seasons um and we may not have needed a

ceremony to notice that because our

lives were timed in that way but today

because our lives the rhythm of Our

Lives comes from work from

technology um from a very different time

schedule

today um I believe we need different

kinds of Ceremonies sometimes to bring

us back into the timing of the cosmos of

the solar system of the earth we're

having to come to terms with our

relationship with quote unquote nature

um climate change is forcing us to

really really look at what we're doing

to the planet you know if we want to

survive here um and there's a lot

of uh there's some attention turning

towards indigenous life ways whereas our

kind of modern Western culture has

destroyed a lot of the planet very

quickly

but be living in harmony with a place

takes time and

practice so we might as well turn to the

people who have had thousands of years

of practice in a particular space and so

looking back to um indigenous peoples

for ideas of sustainability is important

now but that's not to say that

everything was perfect in Havi all the

time you know there were mistakes made

Lessons Learned but part of the idea of

ceremony is to carry those lessons

forward and remind us um of the

importance of living in balance and

living in harmony together with our

place we are all like like Japan like

Okinawa like Ireland where my ancestors

are from we live on an island and the

lesson of living on an island is

that things are

limited and so to survive we have to

share we have to be generous we have to

work together and that's easier said

than done it takes complex social

systems ritual systems um and

ultimately something that we like in our

tradition we like to call environmental

kingship which is the idea that the the

land the trees the ocean the plants the

animals they're not just things their

family that they have thoughts they have

feelings um they have Wis

that they can teach us so part of our

ceremonies are designed to

re uh remind us of that story that the

land is our family and if it's truly our

family then we have we have a

responsibility to care for in a

particular way as we would care for a

family member versus if this is just

rock and it's just a thing I can do

whatever I want to it right so the

ceremony helps to remind us that all of

these things are our family um and I

think we in modern society we forgot

that which is why we're able to destroy

the planet we don't see it as family

in reality right the whole earth is an

island though it's like an island

because around the earth is just

space and if we don't take care of this

Earth

this island Earth um we don't learn how

to work together as communities as

Nations we don't remember how to care

for our planet like our

family um it's the only one we have you

know so I so therefore I believe island

people have a lot to teach the Earth the

whole planet to remember that the Earth

is an island um and we have limited

resources we have limited space so we

have to share it with

aloh his question is so aloha is a word

we use all the time and it's very

associated with Hai and on one level it

can seem very simple right we say it as

a greeny a greeting yeah but what it

means is love so upon greeting we

exchange that love

Aloha love but to

live all the time from a space of Aloha

from compassion from Love is is quite

difficult as human beings because we

have a lot of our own desires and wants

and needs and so how do we interact with

the wants and the desires and the needs

of others and make sure that everybody

is taking care of in an island space um

it it I think it takes constant work

takes constant work um it takes certain

social structures like the family um

like the Hal hola um but but that is

really at the heart of why we do

ceremony to be able to express that

Aloha for the Sun the volcano the Earth

the plants and the animals for each

other um but also to recommit to that

Aloha

to um to come away from just the ego um

that can be that can dominate daily life

um and to reground in that as our

fundamental principle
