What alternative to traditional gas investments has been highlighted in the transcript?
-The transcript highlights renewable energy as an alternative to traditional gas investments, emphasizing its benefits of being faster, cleaner, and cheaper while also ensuring geopolitical stability.
How has the Russian invasion of Ukraine influenced the view on energy investments?
-The Russian invasion of Ukraine has made it evident that relying on a single nation for energy needs can be risky, thus reinforcing the argument for accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.
What is the speaker's view on the current momentum for energy transition?
-The speaker believes that the current momentum is very good for taking the right decisions to accelerate the penetration of renewable energy and storage infrastructure, which is essential for a stable and self-sufficient energy supply.
What role does storage infrastructure play in the context of renewable energy?
-Storage infrastructure plays a crucial role in renewable energy by providing the means to store excess energy for later use, thus ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of electricity even when renewable sources are not producing power.
How has the interest of investors in renewable energy projects changed recently?
-The interest of investors in renewable energy projects has increased significantly, especially in Greece, due to the government's efforts and the recognition of renewable energy's potential to meet the nation's energy needs.
What issues related to renewable energy investments are currently affecting investor trust?
-Issues like curtailments, which are the deliberate reduction of electricity generation from renewable sources, are affecting investor trust in renewable energy projects, highlighting the need for better planning and integration of storage solutions.
What does the ministry recognize as important in the energy sector, according to the transcript?
-The ministry recognizes the importance of storage infrastructure in the energy sector and is reportedly examining ways to accelerate its development, which is crucial for the integration and reliability of renewable energy.
What is the speaker's opinion on the necessity of gas in the current energy landscape?
-The speaker acknowledges that gas is needed today but emphasizes that the focus should be on accelerating alternatives to gas, particularly renewable energy and storage infrastructure, for a more sustainable and geopolitically stable energy future.
What lessons can be learned from the past regarding the acceleration of renewable energy and storage infrastructure?
-The speaker suggests that in the past, there was a missed opportunity to be more aggressive and faster in developing renewable energy and storage infrastructure, which could have prevented current issues and built a stronger foundation for energy transition.
Outlines
🌏 Geopolitical Stability and Energy Investment
The speaker acknowledges the uncommon nature of their presence on the panel and emphasizes the importance of geopolitics in energy investments, particularly in gas and pipelines. They note the lack of geopolitical stability in certain regions and propose renewable energy as a cleaner, cheaper, and faster alternative that also ensures such stability by generating electricity domestically. The speaker uses the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a case study to argue for accelerating the energy transition towards renewables, highlighting the shift in investor interests towards renewable projects in Greece and the need for supportive infrastructure like energy storage.

Transcripts
thank you for having me here um it's not
that common for me to be at the panel
with uh so many times expressing the
word g but uh let me differentiate a bit
and adhere a bit more to the opinions of
Minister skag gagis um I think that uh
as also the the title of the panel uh
implies geopolitics is very
important and uh when we talk about
investments in gas and corridors and
pipelines geopolitical stability is one
of the key uh parameters that we should
consider and unfortunately we live in a
world and especially in an area of this
globe that this is not taken for
granted
instead we have developed in the last
decades some other Alternatives in
generating electricity and this is
Renewables which is faster it's
cleaner and cheaper now and at the same
time it's
also assuring geopolitical stability
because you generate in your own country
the electricity you want
uh what we could see also recently in
The Last 5 Years is that after the
Russian invasion in
Ukraine this became more
evident being
somehow subject to the desires of a
Nation to
Electrify your needs and your people is
not maybe the wisest choice so in our
point of view
we should use this Russian war as an
example and as an incentive to
accelerate further all our efforts
towards the energy transition what does
it mean more Renewables and that's why
also you see a big difference in terms
of interests of financing such projects
I mean it's not comparable especially in
Greece with the efforts of the
government we have seen a tremendous
interest of investors to invest in
Renewables and Renewables also have
proven that they can
supply almost all the energy that the
nation
needs as long as they utilize the
contribution of supportive
infrastructure such as storage and this
is where we are today in my point of
view the ministry has realized the
importance of storage infrastructure the
ministry as far as we know from press
releases is examining seriously the
acceleration of storage infrastructure
in the country which combined with
Renewables can solve the problem in this
sense this is something that for sure we
could have done better in the past we
could would be more aggressive and
faster so that we don't face today
issues like the curtailments that affect
the investors trusts in Renewables but
at the same time I think that we are in
a very good momentum to take the right
decisions to accelerate the the
penetration of storage in the system
that will make sure that Renewables can
supply the majority of electricity in
the nation for sure we need gas today
but for sure the only way would be to
accelerate the Alternatives we have
towards gas
