hi i'm john richardson-love director of

play00:02

mental health and lead trauma and

play00:03

resilience educator here at child savers

play00:05

i want to share with you a way to think

play00:07

about our brains and understand our

play00:08

brains particularly when they're going

play00:10

through times of stress and sometimes

play00:12

trauma too this comes from bruce perry

play00:15

who's a physician who has written a

play00:17

number of different books most recently

play00:18

with oprah winfrey the book called what

play00:21

happened to you he also created

play00:22

something called the neurosequential

play00:24

model of therapeutics that sounds pretty

play00:26

fancy but in the nmt model he created

play00:29

this idea that helped us understand how

play00:31

our brain functions brain states and if

play00:34

we don't understand people's brain state

play00:36

it's hard to understand how we can

play00:37

interact with them and help them be

play00:38

successful the first and most basic

play00:40

fundamental brain state that people have

play00:43

is their need to real to regulate and

play00:46

our regulating need is regulating our

play00:48

survival response when someone's not

play00:50

well regulated in this basic fundamental

play00:53

brain state they're going to be in their

play00:55

survival response that might be their

play00:56

fight their flight their freeze that

play00:58

kind of of basic animalistic response to

play01:03

the world around them because it's

play01:04

focused on survival and if i don't feel

play01:07

safe if i'm not well regulated then i'm

play01:09

going to have a hard time being

play01:10

successful and doing anything else once

play01:12

we help people be well regulated we need

play01:14

to help them feel related to feel

play01:16

connected with the world with other

play01:18

individuals so that they don't feel

play01:20

alone in the world because when

play01:21

somebody's not related someone is not

play01:23

connected to other people oftentimes bad

play01:26

things happen and then the third brain

play01:27

state and the highest level of brain

play01:29

state is reasoning and that reason is

play01:31

our ability to reason to learn to

play01:33

process to think to plan to

play01:36

operationalize to regulate and

play01:37

self-regulate all those kind of skills

play01:39

that we really need in that reasoning

play01:41

state and that reasoning brain state is

play01:43

where we want people to be 90 if not 100

play01:46

of their lives but sometimes they're not

play01:48

we understand these brain states we can

play01:50

understand how we can support them

play01:52

because when someone is in this need for

play01:54

regulation then i'm going to approach

play01:56

that individual with helping them

play01:58

regulate which might be about play it

play02:00

might be about movement it might be

play02:02

about music it might be about giving

play02:04

them food and rest it might be about

play02:06

just giving them time to to be peaceful

play02:09

a peaceful quiet space and we need to

play02:12

understand that because if someone's in

play02:14

that need for regulating then i'm not

play02:16

going to be able to help them and

play02:17

connect with them in a relationship if

play02:19

they are well regulated then i can work

play02:21

on that reasoning brain state and when

play02:23

we're working in the reasoning brain say

play02:25

that's when i can use my body language

play02:27

my voice tone my empathy my compassion

play02:30

um the words that i have and my

play02:31

relationship in general to help them

play02:33

understand that they're not alone in the

play02:35

world to help them feel connected and

play02:37

it's only after they feel safe and they

play02:39

feel connected that we can be in that

play02:41

highest level of brain state that

play02:43

learning brain state that

play02:45

reasoning brain state so that we can

play02:46

help people to do all those things that

play02:49

they need to do once they're there

play02:50

they're golden and we want to help keep

play02:52

them there and maintain their presence

play02:54

there understanding people's brain

play02:56

states is essential to this

play02:57

interpersonal communication to helping

play02:59

anyone whether adult or child to be

play03:01

successful in the world and to have good

play03:03

positive interventions with them and

play03:05

remember behavior communicates the brain

play03:07

state i hope this helps you understand

play03:09

the people around you that you serve

play03:11

that you work with particularly the

play03:12

children in your lives as we help them

play03:14

walk through those critical moments

play03:16

and we have the gift to be in being able

play03:19

to spend time with them and help them be

play03:20

successful thanks for listening
