Transcripts
verbal communication
before when we communicate with people
we use some form of language whether or
not it is the written language
whether or not it is sign language
whether or not
it is body language
language is defined as a system of
symbols that we use to communicate our
thoughts
our ideas and our feelings
so the question is what is the nature of
language language is symbolic
words that we use are symbols and evoke
certain responses i would like for you
to think about what responses do you
evoke with the language that you use
what responses do you evoke with the
symbols that you use
think about what responses are evoked in
you when you see
certain symbols and or hear certain
words
words also represents people ideas or
are things
so we think our thoughts
and we express our thoughts through
words we express our thoughts
through symbols
words also have multiple meanings so we
have to be mindful of that
especially when we're communicating with
others and because words have multiple
meanings
it is your job as the communicator to
make sure that everyone
knows exactly what it is that you intend
on conveying to them
and if you don't do that our interaction
amongst people can be miscommunicated
because when we're dealing with words
and because they have multiple meanings
once again it's so easy for our messages
to be miscommunicated and or interpreted
differently
than how we intended so there are three
different types of
meanings that we're going to discuss the
first type is denotative meaning which
is the dictionary definition
so when you're having the conversation
once again you would like
to make it clear as to the meaning of
certain words that you were talking
about
a second type of meaning is conducted of
meaning and this is just the people's
interpretation of a word
so everybody has a different
interpretation of a word and what that
word means to them
based on their individual experiences
a third type of meaning is the
etymological meaning
which is the true meaning and the origin
of a word
this type of meaning is so so important
and we all shall operate from this type
of meaning however if you are amongst
a group of friends and you're speaking
slang then it's a common rule and it's
understood that you're speaking
in that type of language and even with
slang language
words can be misinterpreted based on the
region that you're from
so once again always be mindful of the
words that you're using
the context in which you are using the
words and the people with whom you are
communicating with
because messages once again
can and oftentimes do get misconstrued
so equivocal language
is
so equivocal
equivocal language is open to more than
one interpretation
it's also ambiguous and oftentimes
when you listen to certain people
maybe some politicians maybe somebody
who is trying to influence you
they use equivocal language because it's
subject to
more than one interpretation they're not
very very specific
and or the words are so ambiguous and
vague to where
it can mean anything to anybody
so be mindful of using equivocal
language
and when you're dealing with someone
who's speaking equivocally to you
you have to ask questions you have to
require them to be very specific in what
they're
talking about
so what language is equivocal that we're
dealing with
every day
english english is a very equivocal
language because when you look at the
dictionary
you have more than one or two meanings
for a word
so when you're conversing with people
how do we know exactly what meaning
you're talking about so it's best
to deal with the etymological meaning of
a word because that's the true meaning
and if we deal with the true meaning
there's only one true meaning
and everybody will be on the same page
thought forms into language so our
thinking affects
the language that we use if i'm thinking
in a righteous manner
nine out of ten times righteous
unrighteousness will not come out of my
mouth
if i'm speaking in a unrighteous manner
or a wicked
manner then nine out of ten times
wickedness would come
out of my mouth our language also
influence our thoughts so
if you tend to speak a certain way you
may sit back and meditate
on what it was that you said
and if you meditate on something long
enough you will
at some point start to attract that type
of energy
so once again be mindful of the words
that are coming out of your mouth
and we're dealing with verbal
communication so now we're dealing with
sound vibration
so we all are energetic people we all
are energies we all are spirits
energy and motion and all that deals
with vibration so once again
when you are speaking and we're dealing
with sound vibration
we are transferring that energy to that
other person
functions of language
language is used as a means of control
certain people use language to control
others whether or not it's through
bribery
whether or not is through threats
there are so many different ways we can
use language to control
people it could be written in a contract
for example
if you would like to purchase a
particular car and
if we actually read the terms and
conditions a lot of that information
that
in these contracts we would not
we would not sign off on and or agree
however because we would like to
ride off the lot with that car we're
definitely going to sign
so in a way language is a means of
control especially in written contracts
we agree to a lot of stuff that we
really do not agree with
a second way that language is used we
use language to share information
when we interact with people every day
what are we doing we are sharing
information
we also use language to express our
feelings
we use language to be creative
and we use language in rituals
so there are many many problems with
language
one of the problems is by its language
the second problem is
sexist language the third profane
fourth ruled and the fifth uncivil
and we're about to look into each of
these different
types of problems that we deal with in
language
bias language is derogatory language
used to exclude certain groups
or imply something negative about the
group or a person
so we have all experienced
or have witnessed gender bias
one example of a gender bias would be
someone telling a woman that they can't
be a plumber because they're a woman and
that's a man's job
or if a man tell a woman her
position is to stay in the kitchen and
take care of the babies
that would be an example of gender bias
sexist language this is excluded a man
or a woman when the topic refers to both
sexes
think of how many times people have
engaged in the conversation and they use
sexist language unknowingly
this is something that we have been
taught indirectly so
it just becomes the norm but for people
that recognize what it is
they still go along with the flow
because they they look they still go
along with the flow because they don't
want to
scratch all that sexist language
is excluding a man or a woman when the
topic refers to both
sexes so this
means that
if i'm having a conversation with my
daughter
and we're talking about women things
and my husband may want to chime in
if i say to him oh this don't have
anything to do with you this
is between women and only women can be a
part of that because you wouldn't
understand
that would be an example of sexist
language
profane language is language that is
considered insulting
rude vulgar or disrespectful
now this definition is so interesting
because
you can use profane language
if you are insulting somebody you can
insult somebody without using so-called
curse words or
cuss words
if you are rude that is considered being
profane
if you are vulgar and or disrespectful
that is
considered being profane so it's not
just about
speaking certain words that we deem to
be
curse words however
whether or not people
deem a word to be profane is based on
the individual now if you consider
yourself
to be sacred then
nine or ten times you will call people
to the carpet
when they are insulting or being rude or
being vocal or disrespectful
so once again profane language
is just not saying cuss words so let's
look at this
image that we see for some people
this type of talk may not be insulting
or rule
oh my gosh ho
did you hear what that just said
to me
now if people talk like this every day
this type of language may not be
considered profane because that's just
part of their environment and that's how
they talk
however if somebody is not exposed to
this type of language
a lot and when they hear this for them
this may be deemed to be
profane so once again we have to have an
open mind
and realize that everybody do not see
everything the same way
rule this deals with words of behavior
that are impolite
blunt unpleasant harsh and tacky
as i just said
determining whether or not something is
rule
is an individual thing
straight like that and it's
all dependent on what you are exposed to
your upbringing your environment and
what you have been taught
so we have to keep an open mind
once again that when we are interacting
with people
something that you deem to be rude may
not be rude to another person
so the the blueprint for
what is rude
is based on what has been
communicated within a person's household
so words of behavior that are impolite
blunt unpleasant harsh and tacky
this is the definition for rule
uncivil is language or behavior that is
inappropriate
ill-mannered or accrued
i'm pretty sure we have
listened to certain people
and we had them deemed them to be
uncivil
i'm pretty sure at some point you have
been uncivil
if your order at the drive-thru
is wrong sometimes people tend to be
uncivil
we tend to behave inappropriately
