play00:00

Hi guys, welcome back to another episode on Beauty Within!

play00:03

It's your greasy girl, Fel!

play00:05

And today is another episode in our acne series.

play00:09

Because if you guys haven't been following along,

play00:11

or you're just new to the channel, welcome!

play00:13

And today we're talking all about serums!

play00:16

And there's kind of like a family of serum products because it does actually include -

play00:21

or we like to lump serums, ampoules, and essences together.

play00:25

And I'm going to explain a little bit more about each of these and how they differ,

play00:29

but also how they might be very very similar

play00:31

so that you can also, you know, decide which one to choose from.

play00:34

And this is following on from our toner video.

play00:37

Because I broke up the previous two episodes of toners into, you know,

play00:42

chemical exfoliating ones that really help to slough away dead skin,

play00:45

prevent breakouts, and deal with active breakouts.

play00:48

But then in a skincare routine, you also want very soothing and calming ingredients

play00:52

to work with the chemical exfoliants that are really great for all and every skin type

play00:56

because we definitely should have our calming, soothing friends in life and in our routine.

play01:02

And the serums that I'm going to be mentioning today are personally my favorites.

play01:06

Some of them I've used for years and years.

play01:09

I'm in love with the formulation, in love with the key active ingredients that really help with,

play01:13

you know, redness, calming inflammation,

play01:16

and then also dealing with those darker brownish acne marks that come from, you know, scarring.

play01:22

And then there are also ones that I've recently discovered

play01:25

that I think are really great for you guys if you're looking for something affordable.

play01:29

So there is definitely something for all of you across all price ranges.

play01:32

So if you haven't joined the Beauty Within family yet, make sure you do.

play01:36

We would love to have you on board our skincare journey.

play01:38

And press the notification bell so you stay up to date on all our new updates.

play01:44

So let's just get into it. See what we have today because I have a lot!

play01:55

All right, so quick general overview on what serums, essences, and ampoules are

play02:00

and how they might differ slightly.

play02:02

So starting off with serums.

play02:03

Serums are a booster shot that contains high levels of active ingredients

play02:07

to really target specific skin concerns that you might be facing.

play02:11

Now these concerns -

play02:12

as we know, we have a lot of concerns, right -

play02:15

can range anywhere from hyperpigmentation from either sun damage or even acne marks.

play02:19

And then there's dullness and dehydration, even flaky skin, which needs hydration.

play02:25

So all of these are different skin concerns that all of us kind of have differently.

play02:29

Blah blah blah...flah.

play02:31

That all of us will face from time to time.

play02:33

It's not going to be the same every week or every day.

play02:37

This is why sometimes we use serums, sometimes we don't.

play02:39

And this is why we use some ingredients, and sometimes we don't.

play02:43

Now serums can come in two different types in terms of formulation.

play02:47

And that's water-based and also oil-based,

play02:49

which determines the texture that you feel.

play02:52

But also it really comes down to your preference in what you like on your skin,

play02:56

that works well with skin types.

play02:58

Now water-based serums absorb very quickly into the skin

play03:01

and usually contain potent water-soluble ingredients, like vitamin c and hyaluronic acid.

play03:07

On the other hand, oil-based serums contain skin-nourishing oils.

play03:11

For example, botanical oils can take a little bit longer for the skin to absorb.

play03:16

And that's why you might experience your face being a little more greasy and shiny.

play03:21

Not in a bad way, in a very healthy way.

play03:23

And also water-based and oil-based carries active ingredients differently throughout the skin.

play03:28

So it actually comes down to your skin type, your personal preference, and also the active ingredients

play03:33

that's all working simultaneously to build this little serum that we have in a bottle.

play03:39

So if serums were a booster shot,

play03:41

ampoules are like the booster shot to the booster shot.

play03:46

They're typically formulated with even higher concentrations off these active ingredients

play03:51

and are intended to be used when your skin is undergoing a very specific crisis.

play03:55

Okay, so the definitions are pretty general.

play03:57

But how I understand ampoules is it can offer you a very effective fix for a short term skin concern.

play04:04

And in Korea, you'll find them packaged in very small vials because they are quite potent.

play04:09

So you can definitely use ampoules as your serum because they are essentially in the same family.

play04:14

Now moving on to essences!

play04:16

This one, to me, can get a little confusing

play04:19

because depending on which brand you're looking at,

play04:22

every brand will kind of define 'essence' differently.

play04:25

The essence can fall into the category of toners,

play04:28

but they can also be an essence serum.

play04:31

For example, the Tatcha essence, to me, I featured in the toner video because it is so watery.

play04:36

It's just like, you know, straight up water from a well.

play04:38

And then you have essences that are more goopy in consistency,

play04:41

which, in my mind, is a....

play04:46

a serum.

play04:47

But generally, they're more lightweight and less concentrated

play04:49

and really add that layer of hydration to parched dehydrated skin.

play04:54

Great for oily skin as well because, as we know, we need hydration.

play04:57

Now what you all came here for!

play05:00

The product reviews of some of my favorite serums, ampoules, and essences.

play05:05

Because there are so many types, I'm gonna split them up into the active ingredient.

play05:09

So first, we're going to go into chemical exfoliating serums, ampoules, and essences.

play05:14

So typically when I find myself reaching for these chemical exfoliating serums

play05:19

is when I feel that's it starting to bubble to the surface.

play05:23

There's little bumps on my skin or I know that time of month is coming.

play05:27

So I have to kind of prevent anything from coming before it might have been coming

play05:32

Or even in the stages of active breakouts, and I really need to calm it down.

play05:37

Now as I said before, I don't think you need to double up on a toner that has AHA/BHA,

play05:43

as well as a serum with AHA/BHA.

play05:45

I would say choose one or the other - balance.

play05:48

So if your toner already has chemical exfoliating, use a soothing and calming serum and vice versa.

play05:54

So let's start off first with one of my favorite brands.

play05:57

And boy, do I have a kicker of some information for you for this one!

play06:02

This is the Some By Mi, the AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Day Miracle Serum.

play06:08

If you watched the toner [video], I rave on and on about their toner version of this

play06:13

because I think it's wonderful!

play06:14

It contains niacinamide and all the three types of chemical exfoliants.

play06:18

But what this is is a bi-phase serum,

play06:20

which means there's a layer of oil and also a layer of water.

play06:24

And you have to shake it to kind of activate them together so that you get a very, you know,

play06:29

well-dispersed spread over the face.

play06:31

And I think this entire line is made specifically for people who are dealing with breakouts,

play06:37

but are also very sensitive to certain ingredients.

play06:41

Which is why there's PHA, which is the most gentle form of chemical exfoliant.

play06:44

And why this is the most gentle is because it's got a larger molecular size,

play06:49

which means it won't penetrate as deeply as something that's smaller, like glycolic acid.

play06:54

Now here's the kicker.

play06:56

When we were looking into the ingredients to find what the BHA is,

play07:00

we actually couldn't find the BHA component.

play07:03

This is like a murder mystery without the murder.

play07:08

I only say that because I've been watching murder mysteries.

play07:11

So normally if you look at it, BHA will come up as salicylic acid, any form of salicylate.

play07:16

Or even willow bark, which is more of that natural component of BHA.

play07:21

But in the ingredients, although this contains very wonderful things,

play07:24

we couldn't find the BHA for the life of us!

play07:27

So if you guys can solve the mystery and help us find it, leave it in the comments.

play07:33

Because we literally looked through different websites, their own website,

play07:37

you know, resellers, other retailers, and we couldn't find the BHA, oh my god!

play07:43

It's like Casper the ghost.

play07:45

I find this one really great.

play07:47

Although it's got the oil on the top, it's very lightweight.

play07:51

It doesn't leave your skin feeling sticky.

play07:53

It's more watery than oily.

play07:55

If you have oily combination skin, this would be really great.

play07:59

It just sinks into the skin,

play08:01

and it just has a very very light scent of the tea tree water. It's really great.

play08:07

Now moving on to more of a recent addition and discovery for me.

play08:11

Is the AHA+PHA Correcting Serum.

play08:13

Now this serum is pretty straightforward.

play08:16

In terms of AHA, contains glycolic acid.

play08:18

And glycolic acid, to me, is just one of those really effective chemical exfoliants

play08:23

because it can really help to shed the dead skin and, you know,

play08:26

unstick the glue that's holding and trapping bacteria in your pores that does cause breakouts.

play08:31

And then in terms of PHA, it contains gluconolactone, which is another gentle chemical exfoliant.

play08:36

So they work together.

play08:37

And the ingredient list of this is very simple to me.

play08:41

So everything else that this is formulated in has to do with the hydration purposes, like glycerin.

play08:47

But right at the end, it does contain tea tree leaf oil, as well as peppermint oil.

play08:51

So if you're super sensitive to those ingredients, that's something to take note of.

play08:55

But this is a beautiful lightweight consistency.

play08:59

It doesn't have that goopy texture like The Ordinary serums have.

play09:02

And it blends into the skin like a dream.

play09:04

There's no fragrance in here.

play09:05

This is great, especially if you're kind of starting out into the realm of chemical exfoliants.

play09:12

It's not as potent as some other formulations. So that's this one there!

play09:17

Okay, now moving on to one that I'm really excited to share with you guys.

play09:22

Is the Bliss Clarifying Toner + Serum.

play09:25

Okay, so this has BHA, witch hazel, niacinamide, as well as zinc, and also centella asiatica.

play09:31

Why I'm so excited about this one is because, you know, you can find this in the drugstore.

play09:36

You can find this at Target.

play09:37

But if you look at the ingredients, it's the greatest concoction of ingredients that I would ever want!

play09:44

For things, like controlling your sebum production if you're super oily,

play09:47

for breaking down dead skin that could be,

play09:49

you know, cooping up the bacteria, causing your breakouts.

play09:52

You know, there's also ingredients that really help to brighten the skin.

play09:56

Niacinamide is the all-star ingredient.

play09:58

And then it's got salicylic acid, as well as willow bark, for the BHA components,

play10:03

which really help to go down into the pores, because it is oil-soluble,

play10:08

to break down any of that gunk that's inside, stuck in the sebum.

play10:12

Then it's also got zinc pca, which is a great ingredient for any acne-prone skin gal or guy

play10:18

because it helps to regulate sebum production.

play10:20

And you guys know I love The Ordinary Niacinamide and Zinc.

play10:24

So it's just a great ingredient for blemish-prone skin.

play10:27

And then my favorite, centella asiatica extract, which helps to calm inflammation.

play10:33

I can't even believe that the concoction of these ingredients is in such an affordable drugstore product

play10:39

because it is really hard to find so I'm really impressed with the formulation of that.

play10:44

Now the consistency is also quite satisfying.

play10:47

It almost comes out like a gel moisturizer.

play10:50

So you pop the cap open, and then you pump it out a little and it's this clear gel.

play10:54

Woopblepblepblepbloopbl!

play10:56

And it's very refreshing.

play10:59

And it kind of bursts on your skin like a gel moisturizer does.

play11:02

And it doesn't leave the skin feeling tacky or sticky at all.

play11:05

It just glides over the face really nicely.

play11:08

Now moving on to probably one of the first chemical exfoliating serums that I ever used

play11:14

when I was in the pits of desperation!

play11:17

It was like popping up two pimples every day, and I didn't even know what was happening.

play11:21

So I went to Sephora, picked up this thing. I don't know how.

play11:25

But it's the Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum.

play11:30

Now this one is a pretty penny because all of Drunk Elephant products are pretty expensive,

play11:36

but I do have to say that out of the entire range of Drunk Elephant,

play11:40

I would say this one is the only one that I would probably buy, as well as the Polypeptide Moisturizer.

play11:45

But anyway. So this one contains 12% AHA and BHA.

play11:49

And it is a night serum because it is very effective for resurfacing the skin.

play11:53

You know, helping with texture, hyperpigmentation, and active breakouts.

play11:57

The AHA, it contains glycolic, tartaric, lactic, and citric acid.

play12:01

So it's a pretty well-formed AHA family.

play12:05

And then the BHA is the salicylic acid.

play12:07

Then it's also got raspberry fruit extract,

play12:09

which is an antioxidant that can also help to soothe the skin.

play12:13

And also sodium hyaluronate for hydration and allantoin for soothing and nourishing.

play12:17

So this one is a clear gel, and it also spreads really easily over the skin.

play12:21

It's not sticky.

play12:22

So I think from memory, I did use this three years ago.

play12:26

I really haven't used it because I was kind of scared for it to run out because it was so expensive.

play12:31

Um, but I can tell you that it works.

play12:33

But I think it did tend to dry my skin out at that time

play12:38

because at that time, I just wanted to blast away all my skin!

play12:42

This was when I was less educated in soothing, calming ingredients

play12:45

and just use this by itself.

play12:47

It's not scary. It's not going to peel your face.

play12:50

But if you're more combination or you're more dry, then it can definitely have drying effects

play12:57

because of the rapid exfoliation of dead skin.

play13:00

Now following on the train of the more potent chemical exfoliating serums

play13:04

is the Farmacy Honeymoon Glow!

play13:07

This is one that Rowena and I really loved back when it came out,

play13:12

and we were really into chemical exfoliating.

play13:14

And it really does help to shed any flaky skin, any unevenness

play13:20

because it's formulated with 14% AHA and BHA.

play13:24

So if you guys know, Farmacy is known for their echinacea.

play13:28

But they also use a lot of honey.

play13:29

And this one contains flower acids, including hibiscus flower extract.

play13:33

And hyaluronic acid to hydrate and, you know, plump the skin so it looks nice and glowing.

play13:37

And on top of that, it's got the honey royal jelly extract and propolis,

play13:42

which is probably one of my favorite soothing, calming ingredients

play13:46

and something that Farmacy is really known for.

play13:49

I love their mask, love their mask. It's my holy grail mask.

play13:53

And honey just acts as this really great antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

play13:57

And delivers hydration and that suppleness to the skin that is unmatched!

play14:02

So this one, I do remember when I applied it, it was really strong

play14:07

because my eyeballs could feel it.

play14:11

And there is a little bit of tingling, and that tingling subsides.

play14:14

And then in the morning, you're literally glowing.

play14:16

So you definitely want to try this one if you're already quite well versed,

play14:21

and you know your skin can handle chemical exfoliants.

play14:24

Maybe you look for that once a week glow.

play14:27

I feel like this serum is awesome and probably one of my favorites.

play14:30

If you're about that intensity!

play14:33

But if you're just beginning out, I would definitely say start with something more like the Beauty Bay.

play14:38

Or even the Good Molecules because the formulation of that is a little bit more gentle.

play14:42

It's got more hydrating ingredients formulated in it without being so potent.

play14:47

Now we have the Naturium one.

play14:50

This is the Vitamin C Super Serum Plus and probably one of my top serums in their range

play14:56

because it is formulated with all the ingredients that I really love, including salicylic acid.

play15:01

It's even got retinol. It's got vitamin c, glycerin, niacinamide, and then glutathione for brightening.

play15:07

So it is more of that goopy texture, but it spreads on like a dream.

play15:11

It's super lightweight.

play15:12

It doesn't completely dissolve to a super watery consistency, but it's very very close.

play15:18

In terms of what it does, it's very similar to the Some By Mi.

play15:21

But the stand out to me is that it's formulated with all the very well-researched ingredients

play15:28

that are known to help with acne, with controlling pores, and with really just evening out skin texture.

play15:35

So if you're going to use this, I would say I only use my chemical exfoliating products at night

play15:41

because I feel like that's the rejuvenation time.

play15:44

I don't want to subject my skin to potential damage,

play15:48

which kind of defeats the purpose of even using these products in the first place

play15:52

if you're going to be going outside in the sun.

play15:54

So just stick to vitamin c in the morning, you know what I mean?

play15:57

But if you are going to use it during the day, you still can.

play15:59

Just make sure you load up on that sunscreen.

play16:02

Now moving on to the niacinamide potent serums.

play16:08

Now there's a few.

play16:10

And as we know, in my mind, niacinamide serums or boosters are just synonymous with Paula's Choice

play16:15

because it's just one of my favorite and one of the first ones I ever used.

play16:19

Still my holy grail is the 10% Niacinamide Booster.

play16:23

This one contains vitamin b3, which is niacinamide, as well as panthenol, which is vitamin b5.

play16:28

Now niacinamide is well-researched.

play16:31

And anywhere between 2% 5% 10% can really work wonders on any skin type.

play16:37

And why it's so great is because it's not as acidic as something like vitamin c.

play16:41

So it doesn't have the irritation that acidic ingredients can give.

play16:46

Why I love this is because 10% is a very effective amount.

play16:49

But the fact that you can add it into a serum or use it by itself or add it into a moisturizer

play16:55

just gives you so much flexibility for an ingredient that is already very flexible

play17:00

and gives you the most.

play17:01

And it's like water. It's almost like a toner.

play17:04

But I added it in here because sometimes I'll use the toner and then, you know, mix it with niacinamide.

play17:09

And I love using niacinamide with, you know, if you're using a retinol moisturizer at night.

play17:14

For me, it works really well.

play17:16

Mine is a little old so i'm not going to...oxidized.

play17:21

I've kept this one for a really long time.

play17:22

I actually have three bottles open at once.

play17:25

But this one I think has lived its life.

play17:28

It's probably oxidized a little too far so I'm probably not going to use that anymore.

play17:32

So just a little example. Bling!

play17:34

So if you guys are also like me and you love your niacinamide, then you might not know.

play17:38

But there is a 20% Niacinamide Treatment as well.

play17:41

This is definitely more of a treatment so I would use this only with other soothing toners and soothing serums.

play17:49

And then I'll use this baby as a treatment and then moisturize.

play17:53

Because 20% is a lot.

play17:55

And although I say that niacinamide is not irritating, at a percentage like this, it definitely can be.

play18:02

And they both actually contain ascorbyl glucoside, which is a type or a derivative of vitamin c.

play18:07

And for all those wondering, "Can you use vitamin c and b together?"

play18:12

Ding ding! Yes, you can, especially when they're formulated together.

play18:16

So if you guys have any hesitation about mixing the two,

play18:19

just find a product that actually formulates it together and you're good. Done and dusted!

play18:24

All questions answered. Free as a bird.

play18:27

Do you like my tassels?

play18:30

Okay anyway,

play18:30

There's also [something] I want to mention, which is a newer product to me.

play18:34

Is the Versed Just Breathe Clarifying Serum.

play18:37

I personally love Versed because I love their cleansing balm.

play18:40

I've used all of their vitamin c, which was really great texture.

play18:43

And then this one, specifically, is newer to their line

play18:46

and contains niacinamide for soothing and brightening, as well as willow bark.

play18:50

And then in that one, there's a zinc blend.

play18:53

So there's yeast extract, horse chestnut seed extract.

play18:56

I always find it funny when there's this horse ingredient.

play19:00

I'm like, "What is a horse doing in [here]? But it's a chestnut."

play19:03

Anyways. And then there's licorice root,

play19:06

which is really great for brightening, for calming inflammation.

play19:09

Really great for oily combination, acne-prone skin.

play19:12

And i'm still testing it out so I will have to you the result in probably a future video.

play19:17

I'm definitely going to do another video for serums because there's just so many,

play19:20

and I can't cover it all in time.

play19:21

Can you say i'm talking so fast because there's so many!

play19:23

Now moving into our last section are the retinol serums.

play19:28

Before this, I would have only thought of using retinol as a moisturizer.

play19:32

But there have come a lot of affordable retinol serums

play19:36

that I think can really help with acne and blemishes and breakouts without causing a lot of irritation.

play19:43

So the first one is from CeraVe, a drugstore brand that I really love.

play19:47

It's their Resurfacing Retinol Serum.

play19:49

This one also contains an encapsulated form of the retinol.

play19:54

Because, as we know, it can have irritating effects,

play19:56

but when it's encapsulated, the encapsulated form helps to deliver the ingredients

play20:02

in a much more controlled and slower method

play20:05

so that overnight it really releases and works its magic rather than just being like a shock to the system.

play20:11

And so if you love the ingredient, but you find that it can be a little drying or anything like that,

play20:16

finding a encapsulated form of that is a really great option.

play20:20

I love this one because of its affordability.

play20:22

it spreads really nicely over the skin.

play20:25

It comes out in this like weird little *Fel and her retinol noises*

play20:29

The top looks like a little R2D2 thing.

play20:32

It didn't give me any side effects so that was really great.

play20:36

Now one that we actually mentioned very recently in my interview with Nafisah.

play20:41

We discussed The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane.

play20:45

They also have one that's 5%, and it's also formulated in squalane oil.

play20:49

So this is a really effective serum that can help address signs of aging, as well as acne.

play20:54

And really just to control all of that inflammation that is going on.

play20:58

Because vitamin a, or retinols, are studied to be very effective with dealing with breakouts and acne.

play21:05

The fact that this is formulated in an oil-based makes it much more nourishing to me

play21:10

because it creates a buffer to the skin.

play21:13

And I just think it's very pleasant to apply. And you only need a little bit.

play21:17

And squalane really helps with nourishing. It's 100% plant-derived.

play21:21

It's great for people with oily skin because oil and oil actually work really well together.

play21:26

And another great oil that it's formulated with is jojoba seed oil,

play21:30

which is also a great oil for all skin types, especially oily skin.

play21:35

So just depending on how familiar you are with the ingredient, 2% is a great starting point.

play21:41

I didn't find any irritation at all.

play21:44

And if you're done with that [and] you're like,

play21:46

"Yeah, this is good. I want to maybe try something a little bit more."

play21:50

Then you can try the 5%.

play21:51

So we did our chemical exfoliants. We did niacinamide. We did vitamin a's.

play21:55

Now I just want to end on one of my favorites as well.

play22:00

It is another booster, but you can use it alone as a serum

play22:04

because it's almost like a moisturizer consistency, a very lightweight moisturizer.

play22:10

Once again, you can add it into your moisturizer, add it into your serums.

play22:14

But I actually like using it straight after my toner as a serum.

play22:20

And then I'll follow with a moisturizer.

play22:21

And azelaic acid is just so great if you enjoy the effects of chemical exfoliants, but you can't stand it.

play22:30

Maybe you have super sensitive skin.

play22:32

Then I would suggest trying azelaic acid because it does actually work slower, but longer term.

play22:38

But gives you very similar effects.

play22:40

It also contains triglycerides for replenishing the skin and, you know, building and retaining moisture.

play22:47

It's also got a tiny bit of licorice extract, as well as salicylic acid.

play22:51

And so this concoction, all together, really just helps to control problematic skin in the most gentle way.

play22:59

So I absolutely love it.

play23:01

It's probably one of my favorite boosters of the Paula's Choice range.

play23:06

So now guys, I was going to talk a little bit more about the hydrating ones

play23:11

'cause they're muy importante,

play23:14

but I think this is enough for one episode for you guys to all digest.

play23:18

You know, go back to the drawing board, see what it is that you need,

play23:22

and then we'll come back with a soothing, calming serums video to work in conjunction with these serums.

play23:28

Personally, I really love calming serums.

play23:32

It's just like self-care to me because the texture is so plush.

play23:36

It's so hydrating. It's like a little gel bubble. I love it!

play23:39

So make sure you check out our two previous videos on toners if you haven't seen it already.

play23:43

And make sure you stay tuned on the channel because our next episode is all about double cleansing.

play23:48

And there's much more to come in terms of the serum, ampoule, essence family.

play23:54

And just a reminder, if you're feeling down, you guys are all doing great, sweetie!

play23:58

*kisses*

play24:00

What did I learn today?

play24:02

Rowena is not here to ask me the question. Hmm.

play24:06

This is awkward doing it by yourself, let me just tell you.

play24:15

Do you like my gladiator sandals that I paired with this twinkle twinkle dress?

play24:23

How do I say something motivational?

play24:27

Bye!
