Transcripts
by late 2020 Shawn mandz announced his
fourth studio album wonder and by this
time he had gone from basically being a
nobody to becoming one of the biggest
and most profitable male pop stars of
Our Generation in basically like 5 Years
From 2015 to 2018 Shawn Manders released
Three Studio albums each debut 10 at
number one and selling progressively
more copies handwritten sold 119,000
copies in its first week his second
album sold 145,000 copies in its first
week and the self-titled Shawn Mendes
his third album sold 182,000 coffees in
its first week the handwritten era had
stitches which became his Breakout song
that reached number four on the billbo
Hot 100 shots then his second album had
even bigger hits with all three singles
peing in the top 15 treat you better at
number six Mercy at number 15 and
there's nothing holding me back at
number six on his third album he had his
first ever a number one single senorita
with Camila Cabo and another massive
achievement with if I can't have you
which debuted and peaked at number two
not to mention cumulatively Shawn mz's
tours grossed about $160 million from
just three tours all of the success even
before he was 23 so you would think that
going into his next album he might
experience similar successes if not more
well it's not what happened W his fourth
album Still peaked at number one but
with near nearly 100,000 less copies
than his previous album basically more
than 50% less and it barely had any hits
the lead single W up peaked at number 18
and quickly fell off the charts after
just 11 weeks the next single which was
the final single was a collaboration
with Justin Bieber called Monster and
that also underperformed massively for
years many of us believed that there was
tension between the two but this song
kind of dispelled those rumors however
it still failed to make a significant
impact it peaked at number eight in its
first week and fell off the charts after
just 14 weeks Additionally the follow-up
tour was cancelled so what happened why
did the Wonder album fail to connect
with fans this time around what turned
fans and the general public off which
pop star allegedly stole his spot and
what does sea need to do in the future
to maintain his relevance long term
let's find out number one poor single
reception and single choices the singles
from this album didn't really stick
around for very long like I said before
the first one W only stayed for 11 weeks
and the second monster which was
supposed to be a bigger hit stayed for
only 14 weeks and after the album had
been released a lot of people thought
that the wrong songs were picked to push
the album mostly the lead single a lot
of people were fine with monster people
just didn't like w as a lead single and
I kind of get it haa was one that a lot
of people thought would have been a good
choice and I kind of agree and I also
think piece of you would have been a
good single Choice Teach Me How to Love
was another option I saw as a potential
single to push the album but I don't
really know about that one it's kind of
corny and cringey to me but I still
enjoy it so whatever and I think it
would have done well with good promotion
number two bad promotion speaking of
promotion a lot of fans felt like Island
records did not invest as much into the
promotion of this album as they have
with his previous albums I saw a lot of
people saying that they could have
picked a really good song from the album
and given it a senorita treatment but
the thing with that is senior R already
had massive fan interest and general
public attention because of how he and
Camila were acting in the music video
and at the time their relationship
hadn't been confirmed publicly which is
why Ireland and Republic were able to
really push the song so hard it already
had interest because it fed into
people's curiosity and thirst for those
two being in a relationship none of the
singles or for that matter any of the
songs on the album commanded the same
kind of attention and in regards to the
album now being pushed a few things were
working against it in general it was at
the end of the year and the Christmas
songs were basically taken over radio so
no matter what they did they wouldn't
have been able to take attention away
from the holiday songs also usually
Sean's albums are followed up with a
tour but this time around Co was a big
deal so a tour happening wasn't really
in possibility and also usually during
his promotional Cycles there were a lot
of in-person performances and because of
Co those just were not very possible
number three Styles is the new Mendes I
have a theory it's not really a theory
it's just my opinion but it's basically
that Harry Styles replaced Shawn Mendes
and took his spot hear me out what I
mean by this is that Harry Styles
basically became the male pop star to
pay attention to Shawn Mendes for the
longest time was the guy to look to if
you wanted a relevant modern current
male pop star but we all know how 2020
was sort of like Harry's breakout year
as a proper pop star watermelon sugar
and adoi were all over the radio they
were basically like the biggest song by
a male pop star aside from you know
everything that the weekend came out
with like nobody could compete with the
weekend but aside from the weekend Harry
Styles was that guy I mean Harry was
already a big deal but in terms of pop
music and being a main pop boy Harry was
nowhere near that even looking at the
beginning of his career it looked more
like he was going to venture Down The
Rock and alternative route and I think
that kind of makes sense also Harry did
a far better job at being a main pop boy
than sea ever did like let's be honest
Harry definitely scratches that itch
that a lot of people are looking for
when it comes to being fully entertained
by a pop star let alone a male pop star
sea just didn't really command that much
attention he's kind of boring and that's
fine but it's not fine if you want to be
a main pop boy and you know that's kind
of what Shawn was going for or maybe
Shawn's label I think Shawn likes being
more lowkey but his label definitely
really wanted him to be like a main Po
Boy number four nobody cared aside from
Hardcore fans people weren't really
checking for this album like that a few
fans either really loved it or
absolutely hated it saying that he
hadn't evolved very much and was
basically doing the same thing that he
did on previous albums but with a
different sound in fact from my research
a lot of people agreed that self-titled
was better and although I don't fully
agree with that I kind of see where
they're coming from but the most
worrying thing I saw was that most
people just did not care like they did
not care and this is the most dangerous
thing an artist can ever experience I've
talked about this in my video about
Nicki Minaj and Ice spice it's better to
have people passionately hate your art
because at least that shows like a level
of caring on their side at least it
shows that they kind of care about what
you put out there and then maybe on your
next cycle you can improve and prove
your naysay is wrong but for people not
to care enough to have an opinion about
your art
that means you're basically on the road
to irrelevance and that's just not
acceptable obviously sea is not
irrelevant he's still very successful
but it's still not a good sign and for
those who did listen to the album some
described it as unseasoned chicken Bland
and
uninspired and one comment even said
it's the audio equivalent to moldy white
bread yikes some even hoped he would
adopt a more edgy image like a bad boy
image and I I kind of agree maybe for
like one era let's see whether that
works number five the Camila Caba
relationship I never realized how many
people hated sea and Camila together
like I knew a lot of people were just
hating on them but I didn't know that
like they hated them together like they
literally bothered nobody but a lot of
people felt like their relationship was
fake and even those who thought it was
real thought that it came across as
forced and inauthentic and people just
didn't like that he was with Camila and
the idea that he possibly wrote some of
the songs like the love songs about
Camila Loki grows a lot of people out I
literally never saw anyone actively
defend Camila throughout all the hate
the most people would say is that all
that mattered was that he was happy and
it didn't really matter that he was with
Camila as long as he was happy that's
all they cared about and their Christmas
duet that was added at the last minute
to boost sales for the album didn't
really help cuz a lot of fans saw that
okay they only did this because the
initial numbers did didn't really look
good so they attached like two more
songs to give people a reason to buy the
album to boost its first week sales yeah
that a lot of people do not like that
number six the tragic reception to his
documentary his n Wonder documentary
that came out a few months after the
album was released people dragged this
film to death they called it shallow and
self-pitying saying it lacked the
emotional impact and personal insights
that is seen in other pop stars
documentaries like Taylor Swift's Miss
Americana and that it came off as selfs
serious yet ultimately superficial all
this from a person whose content is not
particularly
distinctive I'm sorry wait a minute hold
on it says all this from a person whose
content is not particularly distinctive
that was brutal um and that was pretty
much the opinion of everyone who wasn't
obsessed with Shawn was saying like if
they were not a sha manda's fan if they
didn't already like him the reviews for
the documentary were pretty much across
the board negative straight up so those
were the main things that I saw which
contributed to this album flopping some
dishonorable mentions are the fact that
the tour was cancelled usually with
Shawn the tour would have at least
brought more light and attention to his
music it's kind of what happens for a
lot of his music he releases his albums
especially for his second and third
album after a few months he goes on tour
and during the tour session he'll
release like a standalone song which is
tacked onto a deluxe edition of the
album and it sees the album become a
little bit more successful with the
general public but this time around
because he wasn't able to tour because
of Co that opportunity to give more
attention to the album was kind of not
there also only fans really tuned in for
this album like there wasn't much
interest from the general public like I
said before but like it was kind of bad
like only people who were already
interested in sha and even with that it
was people who were really interested in
Sea who tuned in for this album so yeah
those are the reasons why the album
failed and did not connect with fans and
also the reason why the documentary
failed and did not connect with fans I
think like with this new era we're
seeing Shawn do something a little bit
different but not that different because
he's doing country music which is not
you know that evolved in terms of fans
wanting to see him do something new and
different and maybe a bit shocking to
maybe bring a little bit more interest
in his career but you know what I guess
I hope it's as a sucess for him I don't
I don't really know yeah but definitely
he needs to have like one bad boy era
maybe not full on bad boy he doesn't
really need to go like the Justin Bieber
route where he becomes like a public
nuisance but maybe something a little
bit more edgy edgy in a good way not
like cringy edgy yeah let me know what
you guys think about this and leave me
your opinions in the comment section
down below thanks for sticking around
and I'll see you in the next one bye
