Transcripts
Hi Curious People! Maudy Ayunda, here.
Welcome again to my booklist,
where I'll share some interesting insights from the books that I read.
Of all the contents from the book, I'll be sharing 3 insights which I personally find interesting.
Today, we'll review a book titled "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport,
a computer scientist who's an expert of productivity and its topics.
Have you ever feel like you overused your gadget & social media?
Or probably you have experienced “The Social Media Paradox”
where you feel like you have a lot of "friends" (in the cyberspace) but still feel lonely?
Or perhaps you starting to feel disturbed and distracted
with these many technologies in your life?
Well, this book invites us to become a "Digital Minimalist",
someone who uses technologies only when it's meaningful
and only to support our life values.
And if not,
we're going to optimize the usage or even avoid it at all.
First insight.
Digital detox as the initial solution.
Technologies, gadget, apps;
actually these are all products that are designed deliberately
to consume our time and attention.
So imagine,
how much time did you miss
doing things that are meaningless?
To become a digital minimalist,
the writer suggests to do digital detox.
There are 3 steps:
First,
we have to determine our our philosophy of life regarding technology.
This might be a bit difficult.
Because here we have to make a list of all tech tools in our life
and we have to think:
Is this optional or is it necessary?
Should it really be in our life?
Usually, when it's just an option,
the gadget, apps,or whatever kind of service that is,
(the usage) can be put on hold for 30 days
without damaging or disrupting the flow of your personal or professional life.
But we have to be discipline and critical in this process.
Secondly,
leave them for 30 days.
After we have those rules and procedures,
we need to be discipline to stay away from all those technologies we just picked.
Usually, the first week or two is tough,
as we're so used to be accompanied with these social medias and all,
but remember, we're detoxing.
Discomfort is very natural.
When we have the urge to scroll our phone and so on,
the writer said:
fill that time with high-quality activities
such as reading, exercise or any activities of your choice.
Then, after 30 days
slowly we introduce these optional technologies back to our life.
But remember, be careful.
Every time you want to open an application, ask yourself first:
Is this the best way to spend time
that's also align with your life values?
and how to use it so we don't waste time?
By doing these 3 steps,
we ensure that
the technologies, or whatever it is, will always add values to our life.
Insight No.2,
don't fall in love with "like"
Okay.
Human is indeed meant
to socialize.
But do not confuse
social media interactions with real life socialization.
The more you use social media for interactions
the less time you spend for direct communication with people.
The pitfall is that
social media is pretty addicting,
as we're always looking for that small "happiness" in social validation
either from the "likes" or "retweet" of the things that we post.
According to the writer, we have to stop liking posts,
and make communications that are focused on discussion instead,
or conversation.
So that we can maintain a meaningful relationship.
There's a recommendation in this book:
take just 1 or 2 moments in our day for
replying Whatsapp, or any messaging apps,
or we can also make "conversation office hours"
in which this will be a scheduled time for us to chat with people who matter in our lives.
Well, this approach might need some sacrifice.
Certainly, the number of people who interact with us will decrease drastically.
But instead, every interaction we have will be deeper,
more meaningful,
and aligned with our life values.
Insight No.3, spend time in solitude.
There's a chapter where the writer discusses the concept
where human have "lost their solitude" .
A situation where we hardly ever spend time alone with our own thoughts.
So often times, when we're alone or feel bored,
people instead choose "recreational activities of low quality"
like playing games, checking messages from friends,
scrolling with no intentions.
These are activities that may be considered "low value"
because it has no intention.
We must avoid this by seeking solitude.
To practice this, the writer recommends us to start with:
Leaving your smart phone at house for instance,
traveling, or journalling
Or as we’ve discussed earlier, we can fill that free time with "high quality" activities
that contribute to
our well-being, our contentment, and also inner joy.
We might even create a “To do list”
for our free time
where we prioritize the activities with demand
instead of passive consumption,
such as something that uses skills
to create things that are valuable in this physical world.
Or doing activities that require social interaction in real life, that's more structured as well.
And, so what?
I read this book and feel called out.
Because sometimes I relate with the observation that's discussed in this book,
that when we use social medias, or just scrolling, it sometimes feel automatic,
and sometimes I just don't realize that time just passed like that.
And if I compare to the time when I was small,
before all these gadgets, technologies, social medias,
I feel my time is more filled with things that enrich my life,
like learning new skills,
I took guitar and piano lessons,
read books, and so on.
So after reading this book, I have new passion
to give more rooms for high quality activities
and also to give that solitude time
which is very valuable for me.
Okay, thanks for listening Curious People.
