Transcripts

play00:00

hi everyone welcome to episode 8 of Rick

play00:04

space Wednesday as I posted on Twitter

play00:06

yesterday I want to talk about digital

play00:09

minimalism

play00:11

at the beginning of December I wrote

play00:15

here about my current approach to social

play00:19

media where I evaluated the different

play00:23

platforms that I was using heavily at

play00:27

the time and I set out some guidelines

play00:31

and principles that I wanted to follow

play00:34

in order to begin reclaiming my

play00:37

attention

play00:39

and I went into a bit of detail here

play00:42

on the blog post

play00:44

identifying the benefits the drawbacks

play00:48

and kind of next steps and actions that

play00:52

I wanted to implement that I would

play00:55

Implement in order to begin changing my

play00:58

relationship with social media from

play01:01

being an more addictive one to an

play01:04

intentional one

play01:06

and at the time of writing this which

play01:10

was December 3rd

play01:13

I had not yet read digital minimalism by

play01:18

Cal Newport it was on my reading list

play01:21

and it was even on my Kindle but I just

play01:25

didn't get to it yet however around this

play01:28

time I was exposed to these personal

play01:32

websites that I linked here in the post

play01:35

and these would have sparked this

play01:38

evaluation or rather re-evaluation of my

play01:42

relationship with technology

play01:45

and I say re-evaluation because earlier

play01:48

this year I did do a social media detox

play01:53

where I didn't use any form of social

play01:57

media for one month I actually went

play01:59

beyond one month because I found that it

play02:02

was really really beneficial for my

play02:05

creativity and uh Carl calls this

play02:09

actually a digital declutter and at that

play02:14

time it was inspired by one of my

play02:16

favorite Talks

play02:18

by uh Terence McKenna which I have

play02:23

linked here and I also have it in the

play02:26

blog post as well

play02:28

but this is what would have sparked all

play02:32

of this and would have kind of had my

play02:35

gears tuning back to digital minimalism

play02:41

right so let's kind of get in to see

play02:43

what Carl defines digital minimalism as

play02:48

he says that it's a philosophy of

play02:51

Technology use in which you focus your

play02:54

online time on a small number of

play02:57

carefully selected and optimized

play03:00

activities that strongly support things

play03:03

you value and then happily miss out on

play03:06

everything else

play03:08

and my main takeaway from this was that

play03:14

the technology that we use and the way

play03:16

that we use it it should be directly

play03:18

influenced by our values and I found

play03:21

that throughout the first part of

play03:23

digital minimalism Cal really focused on

play03:27

the values right so that led me

play03:30

naturally to to ask you know what are

play03:34

our values and these are the guiding

play03:38

principles that are most important in

play03:41

our life

play03:42

therefore in order for me to interact

play03:46

with technology with an intentional

play03:48

mindset I needed to determine my values

play03:52

and basically let those guide how I use

play03:56

technology which clearly is not what I

play03:59

was doing before I'm not sure how many

play04:01

people maybe the people that Cal would

play04:03

have had in his little survey in his

play04:05

book they would have thought about this

play04:07

in an intentional way but

play04:10

most of us kind of got sucked into the

play04:14

addictive scrolling and the constant

play04:18

checking of notifications that social

play04:20

media essentially is built upon

play04:24

and in my last newsletter I wrote that I

play04:28

never gave much thought to values in my

play04:32

life of course it's not that there's

play04:35

nothing meaningful to me I just never

play04:38

took the time to articulate that meaning

play04:41

specifically so if for example someone

play04:45

were to ask me at that time what are

play04:48

your core values or what are your values

play04:51

I don't know who would be asking me this

play04:52

but if they did my answer would have

play04:54

been pretty generic basically that I'm

play04:57

not trying to kill anybody I'm not out

play05:00

here harming people so Do no harm is

play05:03

would have been a value that I would

play05:05

have said and I probably would have also

play05:07

remembered creativity because creativity

play05:09

has always been pretty important in my

play05:12

life

play05:14

and

play05:15

this this questioning of my values kind

play05:21

of led me and of course I would have

play05:23

researched this I would have looked

play05:25

online and looked in books where I would

play05:28

have uh read a similar views on this

play05:32

topic and in my research I realized that

play05:35

values are just one piece of the puzzle

play05:38

or one facet of a broader concept and

play05:43

that concept is having a personal

play05:46

philosophy

play05:48

I know it seems like we're going down a

play05:51

few different rabbit holes here but just

play05:53

bear with me okay so personal philosophy

play05:58

what is that well our personal

play06:01

philosophy is our North Star it is the

play06:05

compass that we live our lives by and a

play06:09

lot of the time we we essentially

play06:12

everyone has a personal philosophy

play06:14

it's just that it's not articulated or

play06:18

it's not something that we think about

play06:21

but

play06:23

this philosophy actually at least in my

play06:26

reading I'm not saying that this is

play06:28

wrote or written anywhere but in my

play06:30

reading whenever I read about personal

play06:32

philosophy these these facets came up

play06:37

right so

play06:39

our personal philosophy comprises our

play06:41

values and our values as we said before

play06:46

the guiding principles that are

play06:48

important in our life

play06:50

it also comprises our core beliefs which

play06:54

which is basically the lens through

play06:57

which we perceive reality so it's how we

play07:00

think it's our mindset

play07:02

and these our values under core beliefs

play07:06

influence our goals that we set for

play07:09

ourselves and of course to actualize

play07:13

these goals we need to have habits or we

play07:16

need to act in a certain way

play07:19

to achieve these goals so

play07:22

um

play07:23

essentially these are these are the

play07:25

components and I would have focused more

play07:28

on values at least at this point simply

play07:31

because that's what Cal also focused on

play07:36

in in the book as a as an important part

play07:39

of determining how we interact with

play07:42

technology

play07:43

so

play07:45

the values that I essentially

play07:50

I went through a list so James Clay has

play07:53

a list of his core values and there were

play07:55

other lists I will most likely in my

play07:58

newsletter this week I will compile all

play08:01

of these links that I would have used as

play08:03

sources but I will compile the put the

play08:05

link for James Claire's or you can just

play08:08

Google it James Claire core beliefs or

play08:11

core values that will come up first

play08:13

but in that list

play08:16

these are the these are the principles

play08:19

that stood out to me as being the most

play08:22

important in my life

play08:25

um

play08:26

so once I determined these values I then

play08:31

started to think okay how am I going to

play08:34

flash this out more how am I going to

play08:37

make some notes and to write down what

play08:41

these things mean to me in some more

play08:44

detail and also relate that back to

play08:47

digital minimalism using the concepts

play08:50

and the principles that Cal would have

play08:53

talked about in the book

play08:55

and that's where I went into my digital

play08:58

workspace and I went into Tana

play09:00

specifically and I began to really

play09:04

assess uh my technology use based on

play09:08

those suggestions from Cal in the book

play09:12

so here we are in Tana I created this

play09:16

sort of personal philosophy dashboard

play09:19

and right now it's pretty bare I'm not

play09:24

gonna lie it's pretty bad literally made

play09:26

this again this is these digital free

play09:29

space videos are what I'm doing right

play09:31

now in my workspace so it may not be

play09:35

completely oh well it is not fleshed out

play09:38

in any way

play09:40

but over time I go back and I work on

play09:43

these things as I'm thinking about it

play09:45

and as it pertains to my life so

play09:48

I have my core values goals and

play09:52

Technology use so I did create a super

play09:55

tag for values because I had a mind that

play09:59

there were a lot of different things

play10:01

that I would need to think about but I

play10:04

kept it very simple

play10:06

to begin with so I just have a

play10:10

description which is where I will type

play10:13

the why why is creativity important to

play10:16

me why is it essential in my life and

play10:19

how do I want to use creativity in

play10:23

different facets of my life life in

play10:26

terms of Life areas right whether it's

play10:29

career whether it's personal projects

play10:32

Etc

play10:33

and I also included a field for

play10:36

clarifying questions and that is because

play10:40

in James Claire on his website he does a

play10:45

an Integrity report where he asked

play10:47

himself uh different questions

play10:50

pertaining to each value and I did put

play10:54

some of them hair

play10:56

so these are directly from his website

play10:58

for one of his values it wasn't Ruth I'm

play11:02

not sure it actually may have been Ruth

play11:04

he asked himself these questions so

play11:06

these are the kind of questions that I

play11:08

want to answer in that this portion of

play11:13

the value super tag

play11:16

so I have my values I have my goals

play11:18

which I would have talked about in the

play11:21

annual review video last week and

play11:25

Technology uses what we are talking

play11:27

about today so as a list you can see

play11:31

it's just the type of Technology it

play11:34

could be social media it could be an

play11:35

application it can be a device but what

play11:39

we're doing here is an evaluation right

play11:41

so obviously I need the technology

play11:43

evaluation you can shorten that to Tech

play11:45

eval or whatever but

play11:47

let's go into what I have for for

play11:51

Twitter I like seeing this as a card for

play11:53

something for some reason but um I don't

play11:56

have any image

play11:57

Twitter

play11:59

so these are the these are the this is

play12:02

the default content here the fields for

play12:05

each for these technology evaluation

play12:08

super tag and this is kind of the guide

play12:12

that I want to use when I'm thinking

play12:15

about how I'm using this piece of

play12:17

technology I want to keep my core values

play12:20

in mind therefore

play12:23

when I fill this out I can compare okay

play12:26

how does this application impact on my

play12:31

creativity or how do I want my

play12:33

creativity to guide me in using Twitter

play12:37

that's the the mindset behind having

play12:40

this hair

play12:41

I have a direct file you feel now quick

play12:43

thing the only reason I have Fields is

play12:45

because of the how I want to see the

play12:48

information I don't have just plain

play12:50

nodes because I got frustrated with

play12:53

indenting and out denting and

play12:56

it's just easier to see the information

play12:58

side by side so I have it as a field

play13:01

Direct Value what value does this serve

play13:04

in my life for Twitter I know that I am

play13:07

able to meet people with shared

play13:09

interests I'm able to learn from these

play13:12

people I can share my own ideas and I

play13:14

can get feedback on my projects this is

play13:17

how Twitter this is why I haven't

play13:19

deleted my Twitter essentially because I

play13:22

still get some value from it

play13:24

now these questions here are all

play13:27

questions that Carl would have

play13:29

encouraged us to ask in the book before

play13:33

we did or after we did a digital

play13:36

declutter so he also asked how does a

play13:40

tool how does this tool in this case

play13:42

Twitter impact my time and attention but

play13:45

time during the week how much time am I

play13:48

spending on this you know so for Twitter

play13:51

I use it approximately 20 to 30 minutes

play13:55

a day and it's probably less than that

play13:59

because I literally just go on check my

play14:01

curated list of people that I want to

play14:03

stay up to date and keep in touch with I

play14:06

check my messages I check my

play14:07

notifications and then I'm off so I've

play14:10

really called down my use of Twitter

play14:13

since I deleted it from my phone and

play14:15

since I unboxed it from my web browser

play14:19

from Arc

play14:21

Cal also employs us to set standard

play14:25

operating procedures which is

play14:28

essentially how and when we are going to

play14:31

use this tool so for Twitter

play14:33

I do not have the mobile app on either

play14:37

my phone or my iPad or anywhere I use it

play14:41

via the browser within the fixed 20 to

play14:44

30 minute social media window that I

play14:46

have this prevents me from checking

play14:49

notifications constantly and it just has

play14:53

a restriction essentially to keep me

play14:56

where I need to be

play14:58

and to decrease my use of how long I

play15:01

spend there

play15:02

and I of course only well mainly

play15:05

interact with my curated list this is

play15:07

the compile list of people that I want

play15:09

to keep in touch with sometimes I do go

play15:11

back to home like once in a while to see

play15:15

if there are any new updates of

play15:17

different apps but generally I'm in my

play15:20

curated list

play15:21

alternatives are there any activities

play15:24

that I enjoy outside of the digital

play15:27

world that may be better than using this

play15:31

tool now this one is a hard one for me

play15:35

because I am not keen not that I'm not

play15:38

keen I just don't enjoy I'm very

play15:40

socially introverted so I don't enjoy

play15:43

necessarily going out on socializing and

play15:46

you know doing things face to face

play15:49

and very much a homebody so I wrote that

play15:53

I could consider if there are any

play15:55

courses or Summoners on things that I'm

play15:58

interested in although I can't really

play16:01

see that happening maybe I will have to

play16:03

be the one to make it because Trinidad

play16:06

um is not

play16:08

it's it's hard to find certain things

play16:10

but you never know it might exist and

play16:14

maybe that's a better use of my time or

play16:17

some of my time so maybe I can augment

play16:20

the daily use to

play16:23

once a week twice a week three times a

play16:26

week and the rest of my time I can put

play16:29

that into actually going to some sort of

play16:32

talk or course so this is the type of of

play16:36

thinking that he's trying to jog when we

play16:39

ask this question you know is there

play16:41

something else that you could do in the

play16:43

real quote-unquote world that might be a

play16:47

better alternative

play16:48

and lastly I just have an option field

play16:52

for the type of media so whether it is

play16:56

social media application or device

play16:57

because I would like to use this

play17:00

um do something similar to for iPad and

play17:03

laptop Etc

play17:05

and lastly I have an archive and the

play17:08

idea behind this is that this is going

play17:11

to change of course uh therefore I want

play17:14

to keep the previous

play17:17

versions of it so I can put the date

play17:20

here and there's just screenshot this

play17:22

and plug that in and that's kind of my

play17:26

little Archive of how I've how my social

play17:28

media use has developed over time

play17:31

and that's where I am currently as I

play17:35

said this is not a fully packaged thing

play17:38

ready to go but it's how I'm currently

play17:42

thinking about my social media use and

play17:45

how digital minimalism the book by Kyle

play17:48

Newport is helping me to interact and to

play17:53

further evaluate my technology use

play17:56

and um that is pretty much it for now

play18:01

that's what I've been up to in my

play18:03

digital workspace this week

play18:07

I fee feel free to let me know your

play18:10

thoughts on digital minimalism in the

play18:13

comments on Twitter via DM or commenting

play18:17

on the post or even sending me an email
