along the way a lot of countries a lot of sites  a lot of experiences but more importantly it has  

taken us approximately 3 years from the time  that we entered boat life and I read somewhere  

that 3 years is how long it takes to get a  feel for a new life a new environment a new  

place and you read on the internet so it's  true clearly clearly true and here we are 3  

years later and we have some opinions about  boat life that we would like to share with

wrecks havoc on relationships and we've seen it  tear aunder many many couples so it's not for the  

faint of heart you can only spend so much time  with one person before they start driving you  

mad friends they just don't understand the life  we're living and the time zones and the locations  

and conversations just having conversations  about normal life we're living such a different  

life that just having normal conversations is  a struggle and then the relationships that you  

make with local people as you travel through their  countries are really hard cuz then you leave and  

then the relationships you make with other Sailors  are really hard because then you leave and you go  

different directions and that's hard all sorts  of relationships they're just tough number two  

something is always broken till we take a break  [Music] so I went into this lifestyle with such  

naive optimism that one day everything would be  done everything will be done and we'll sail and  

everything will be fixed and we'll just sail no  as soon as everything is done something breaks  

as soon as everything is done your ring needs to  be replaced or your hatches are now leaking or

not something broken there's something that  needs to be cleaned if there's not something

Bottom now this one gets its own category  because it is such a thing that is just  

kind of all consuming cleaning the bottom of  the boat the boat grows moss and algae and  

Barnacles and it just constantly especially  because you'll get so sucked into enjoying  

the cruising lifestyle and then you'll be  ready for the super exciting passage and  

you'll be ready to go and then you're all of a  sudden like ah we have to clean the bottom and  

or or you're sailing along and you have this  amazing wind and you're like wow we should be  

doing like nine knots and you're doing like six  and you're like all right we didn't clean the  

bottom get crabs in the ears the internet really  thinks that's going to happen to us explain a

lot this one's pretty obvious but it  gets on the list because it's obvious  

because it's super true the boat rocks  the boat rocks and sometimes you get  

seasick you mean like rocks no I mean  like it just rocks back and forth oh

constantly I completely am just like can't hear

anything Rocky depend yeah it's always kind of  rocking pretty much always rocking to some degree  

to some degree it's always rocking right now it's  rocking a lot I don't if you can see the Shadows  

but we're actually we're at a Marina and we're  rocking we're rocking a lot we're rocking rock  

on yeah and it's just uncomfortable and that's  whether you're on anchor whether you're sailing  

we're a monoh hole so just a single V and so yeah  we rock a lot and uh that often includes a little  

bit or a lot of bit of sea sickness I I tend to get a little  bit seasick on like the first day of a passage and  

and I get seasick on anchor Jade get seasick on  anchor I don't really get seasick on anchor but  

she does so we kind of we take turns being just a  little bit seasick I don't know that's better or  

worse yeah I don't know o this is a big one number  five is unpredictability oh that world will never

know down into this band we about to attack all  right because we are the life that we live is  

constantly moving we're sailing from Anchorage to  Anchorage country to Country City to City being  

able to tell people where we are and where we  are going to be especially is almost impossible  

it is so impossible that my mom got flagged as  a potential terrorist because when she would  

come visit us on the boat she was constantly  buying oneway refundable tickets for a single  

person she'd often be buying like last minute  harassed at the airport like crazy and that was  

why because of our unpredictable lifestyle she  had to pay the cost of that one and that's just  

the real that's just the reality of it is that we  just don't know I mean people say hey we want to  

come visit you in 6 months where are you going to  be and we legitimately can't even tell you what  

country we're going to be region of what side  of the ocean yeah we might be yeah we might be  

in the other side of the Atlantic we don't know  and that's just part of this life and maybe some  

people are better at it than we are but sure I'm  sure I'm sure some are better at like sticking to  

that schedule but for us just part of the way  that we live is that it's just unpredictable  

because because of the wind and because of the  weather and because of tides and currents and  

personality type of sailors and the personality and  in our personal life you know you go to sleep  

one night with your anchor all set and you think  everything's good and then the boat in front of  

you drags anchor or a Squall pops up or one of  your O-rings rusts off and now you're taking on  

water whatever it is you can't predict what's  going to break next if the weather is going to  

change if the Coast Guard's going to do a random  inspection if you're going to get SI whatever like  

it is the most unpredictable lifestyle there's  noas r i Now understand why there is so much like  

Superstition and like there's so many Traditions  around sailing want to believe you have some  

control you want to believe you have some control  but you don't this tattoo will make the weather  

good for me exactly what is it you never leave  on a Friday or a Monday I don't even know don't  

bring bananas on a boat yeah there's so many so  many traditions and that's why it's because it's  

so you have so little control that you want  to hope you have something thus Superstition  

is born yes yes it's why I only wear socks on my  left foot it was yours number six alcohol [Music]

careful you will consume too much there's  there's alcohol and every get together it's  

hey do you want to come over for Sundowners  hey do you want to come over for an espresso  

Martini you know it's 9:00 a.m. do you want to  do mimosas whatever there is so much alcohol  

just around it all and maybe that goes back to  the unpredictability it's yeah we are supposed  

to be sailing right now but we can't so let's  get drunk maybe I don't know maybe it is it's  

there but it's there it's definitely there number  seven this one is more you than me but I use it  

as well oceans Safe products where did gender  rule that one babe well I don't wash my hair

so give the camera to her and I'm going back to  bed rain is just [Music] the way our Boat Works  

when we shower when we wash our hands when we do  dishes all of that water goes out of the boat into  

the ocean that's just the way it works that is  every boat on the water 99.9% maybe there's some  

that store I don't think so though which means  which means that any shampoo you use any dish  

soap any hand wash any Foot Scrub whatever it is  that you use ends up in the ocean which is going  

to affect the fish and the Dolphins and the whales  and the reefs the coral all of it so you have to  

find super specific oceans safe usually a little  bit more expensive products to have on board so  

that you don't hurt the ocean and quite frankly  they all suck number eight living in a small  

space and down the road and then this is this is  our garage it's our boat cabinet and then throw  

it out here we have it a hanging Locker oh I mean  there's some really big boats but most boats very  

small square footage and a lot of NE netives  come with that when you live in a small space  

you can't have a lot of things you're not going to  be really storing Christmas decorations right and  

when living in a small space means that it gets  really messy really fast and you're kind of on top  

of each other all the time you don't have your own  space you can constantly hear everybody yeah it's  

a small space and so I mean yeah their dog hair  collects quickly human hair collects quickly they  

have to vacuum like seven times a day yeah I mean  you leave three dishes out and all of a sudden the  

whole boat feels overrun by dishes and so yeah it  it can feel crowded and if you want to go back to  

number one again uh number nine this one is kind  of a holding tank problem smoke and a lot of

grunting you know we were talking about you know  reef safe products when we wash our hair dishes  

things like that the exception is when we flush  our toilets there is a holding tank that holds  

the human waste if you just think about that  for some period of time there is going to be  

a storage tote full of your we don't really need  to get into it so much basically any lifestyle  

where you have to handle your own human waste is  an unfortunate yeah whether that's van life boat  

life plane life any kind of off camping life  I just like honestly it I don't think anybody  

enjoys it yeah at all yeah yeah that's it's kind  of gross kind of sucks number 10 the community  

ooh I bet you weren't expecting that one everybody  talks about how great the saing community is but  

here's some things about this community that that  really really really suck Gatekeepers people who  

think sailing needs to be a super specific way  and if you didn't grow up on it if you aren't  

in like the old boys club like you can't be part  of it and it's super unfortunate and it keeps the  

growing generation from accessibility to it  and it's just a little bit sour and there is  

a lot of that in this community especially online  especially among armchair Sailors and then in real  

life I would say one of the sourest things is all  of the in fighting Sailors just love they're like  

old married couples they just love to bicker about  literally everything like it's and everybody knows  

the right way to do it everybody knows the right  way to do it it's mon holes or it's catamarans or  

it's a heavy boat or it's a light boat never get  a sailor started on the correct way to take care  

of te but I will say the one thing we will all  agree on as Sailors though is the power voters  

that's the Saving Grace no we don't mean it  we don't mean it we love you guys we love the  

power just don't W us yeah we're just jealous  that you can go fast Newton's third law equal  

and opposite here's 10 things that absolutely  Rock about boat life number one the community  

this community absolutely rocks my socks off I  don't know just rocks your socks just and it's  

a really cool Community excluding the power  boers nobody rocks the boat you know what  

we actually our neighbor right here is a power  Boer and he seems really cool we actually really

yeah if anything happens in an Anchorage you  know somebody loses their dinghy uh somebody is  

dragging anchor somebody is there immediately  to help somebody runs a ground people rally  

together to help them out the community is really  really cool you have you have friends and family  

anywhere you go going back to you know alcoholism  go up in an anchor sh Rock up to your boat hey you  

want to come over for drinks like immediately  like that's pretty cool yeah it's super cool  

yeah we've made some of the greatest friends  and you know they've got your back and a lot  

of people haven't seen people for a long time so  they see you and they're like another person you  

know and there's just that oh okay going back  on the list holding tanks that will never make  

it on the positive list do you have anything  else to throw onto the list yeah holding tanks  

so because you are now fairly connected to your  bowel movements you really know how things are  

going so you know do I need more fiber do I need  you know maybe whatever it is I'm going back to  

number one you really know how well your partner's  doing lately exactly that's all space number eight  

living in a or number three of positives living in  a small space it cleans up real quick yeah it gets  

messy really fast but it cleans up really fast  you don't end up hoarding things yeah you have  

like one favorite pair of clothes and you really  take care of that pair of clothes because that's  

your one pair of clean clothes it only takes  five minutes to wipe down all the cabinets and  

you can usually always hear the other person  if they call for help usually usually number  

seven wait four number four do you mind I read  some of these sure number seven SL number four  

oceans Safe products yeah I because it is so much  safer healthier it's better for the environment  

it's better for the reef that's just better right  obviously we don't want to be putting chemicals on  

our bodies we don't be putting into the ocean so  even though maybe our skin isn't as soft or hair  

isn't quite as luscious not the Luscious Hair it's  healthier we're probably less likely to get cancer  

probably I mean for from that aspect at least yeah  yeah sun damage who knows who know H number six  

alcohol consumption number five even number five  alcohol consumption there's always a great party  

in the Anchorage it's true and like I said yeah  you rock up to an Anchorage you drop your anchor  

someone almost always is going to come up your  boat and say hey I saw you this other Anchorage do  

you want to come over for Sundowners or hey we're  all meeting up with the beach later do you want  

to come hang out by the fire ah rum the sailor's  equalizer number five number four we really should  

have just counted back down unpredictability this  life is unpredictable because we aren't living you  

know weeks or months or years in advance we are  really living now right so we are thinking about  

what is the weather today tomorrow and maybe a  week out but that's about as far as you can plan  

on weather and so yeah we're making plans for in  a few months but that's about it we aren't super  

strict on time right we aren't worried about is  it 9:30 that we started work is it 10:00 it's  

you just live a lot more connected in a way it  helps you not be so uptight yeah in a way it makes  

you more uptight but in a way it makes you less  uptight number four number three yeah I'm really  

confused these numbers don't seem to be working  I know it's cuz we're counting backwards but this  

was number 10 one still confused all messed up  anyways this one is boat rocking seven it should  

be seven seven seven seven we should just count  it back from 10 the boat rocking SL seasickness  

why is that a good thing I know sometimes it  rocks you to sleep like a baby sometimes it  

does also you're constantly working out just  standing you are constantly working out talk  

about the have to work for those stabilize your  muscles you know our knees our knee muscles they  

got all the little tiny muscles stabilizing those  tiny muscles those tiny muscles they get you yeah  

that's how it's a good thing and it helps you  keep your boat cleaner because you can't leave  

stuff sitting around on on the counter and on  the table put you got to put stuff away cuz you  

might get waked by the community whatever cleaning  the bottom is a fabulous opportunity to practice  

your breath holds that's not you swallow something  also it's a workout getting down and scrubbing the  

bottom sometimes it takes some scrubbing to get it  off if you've been in Anchorage for too long it's  

going to take some elbow grease and knee grease  and shoulder grease and then if you wait too too  

long and the Barnacles start growing and you get  down there with your squeegee and it's like the  

most satisfying thing like really satisfying  when you get it super clean and then you sail  

and you're like o we are just flying number two  something is always broken I'm going to take that  

one because I knew coming into this life that this  is going to be a big project and I love project I  

love working with my hands and so living this life  gives me the opportunity to always fix something  

and I always am almost every day I am fixing  something I'm really glad you still enjoy it  

and it hasn't broken you yet I do sometimes it's  a little redundant like fixing the same thing  

maybe I just need to fix it more right number  one relationships I don't think that there is  

any better Vision then sailing beautiful tropical  locations with the one that you love and continue  

to spend all your time with them sailing off  into the sunset I can't what what is that the the  

stereotyp champagne in hand yeah exactly little  champagne sailing yeah with the one you love into  

the sunset I love doing this life with you it's  super fun great you know if you can survive the  

relationship struggles the payoff is there for  sure for sure for sure our family gets to brag  

about us to everybody cuz we're doing something  so random and weird be like hey did you know  

my little sister just sailed across the Atlantic  Ocean how crazy is that yeah wild and anyway what  

you doing cabbage I don't know I was trying to  think of something to buy she telling the grocery  

clerk that's great that's great true story yeah  I believe it I can know exactly who that was too  

the friends that we make out here are like Soul  friends it is really really cool when we meet up  

with them again because we have so many stories  that we have to share and catch up and when we  

see a boat that we recognize we're instantly like  hey I know you from blank our I saw you wherever  

and you were immediately connected even though  you may not really even know each other you are  

instantly friends because you shared an Anchorage  during whatever storm and you both survived and  

now you can talk about it forever yeah so trauma  bonding you get a trauma bond constantly yeah be  

like ah we rode out that hurricane with you or  we did that storm with you or do you remember  

when that boat dragged anchor we thought it was  going to take us out yeah yeah it's great it's  

fantastic yeah solid actually it's pretty cool it  is really cool all right one bonus positive and

negative nudity it's a positive and a negative  when you get out here among the sailors and you  

get away from society and you unplug it's just  liberating to the point of of you just realize  

how much of the culture you grew up in and the  culture of society and industrialism and and I  

don't know everything it's all deconstructed and  goes just back to the essentials and you realize  

how honestly if you take any of these one through  10 you can apply it to the bonus pick any of those  

and you can you can see why tanks nudity we've  seen people peeing off the back of their boat  

this is a good point nudity all right there you  go I'm telling you like it all applies at some  

point you let go of all of the cultural stigmas  and then the human body is just that and it's not  

sexualized and it's not weird and it's just humans  being humans honestly it's really only a negative  

when you first enter the sailing world and you  haven't come to terms with that yet and then it's  

shocking naked people everywhere but not that many  but more than in like normal life more than what  

you'd seen prior in your whole life that's true  yeah at least mine yeah and and and then you get  

over it and and then it's just fine then it's  just li no big deal yeah the sun on your skin  

it's lovely a negative is that then regular people  come out and they think you're psycho hippie which  

is possibly true and that wraps up the 10 with a  bonus suckiest plus one plus the greatest parts of  

living on a CBO full-time cruising the world so  thank you for joining if you have any more that
