Outlines
🛠️ Employee Buy-in for MES Success
The speaker emphasizes the importance of generating employee buy-in for the successful implementation of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). They suggest that providing employees with their own terminals or interfaces to view tasks and their sequences is crucial. This approach is likened to a to-do list, where tasks are marked off as completed, ensuring that the system remains up-to-date and that employees are engaged with the process. The speaker also stresses the need for employees to be able to adjust priorities and notify the system of any issues, thereby ensuring data accuracy and task completion.
🔍 Choosing the Right MES Vendor
The speaker advises on the selection of an independent vendor who has a deep understanding of the MES software. This vendor should be able to provide a clear view of the software's capabilities without being biased towards specific physical issues the company might already have. The focus should be on finding a vendor who can offer a comprehensive solution that fits the company's needs rather than just addressing existing problems.
🎯 Defining Goals for MES Implementation
The speaker highlights the necessity of having a clear vision of what the company wants to achieve with the MES system, both in the short term and in the long term, such as five years down the line. It's important to determine whether the goal is to solve a specific issue or to have a system that fully controls and tracks every aspect of the manufacturing process. This understanding will influence the choice of MES system and the approach to its implementation.
📈 Starting Small with MES Implementation
The speaker recommends starting the MES implementation with a small, concrete issue such as managing broken parts, rush order processing, packaging, or shipping. This approach avoids the pitfall of scanning the entire factory and performing unnecessary scans. By focusing on critical areas, the company can ensure that the MES system is accepted by the shop floor and that it begins to yield benefits with a limited initial investment, leading to immediate profits and a successful project start.

how can you turn the implementation of
an mes system into a success do you have
any practical tips
uh
yeah i've got about if i think about it
but roughly three tips um
one thing we've noticed is uh you need
to generate buy-in from your employees
definitely the people onto the shop
floor and one of the best ways to
achieve that is giving them insights
into the system um
so if they have their own terminal or or
a place where they can consult what
their tasks are and the sequence in
which they must be doing that it works a
little bit like the tasks list you
receive on on the saturday morning of
your wife um where she says you did this
that and then that and then as soon as
you go through the day you're going to
be striking through those items and
hopefully at the end of the day well
depending upon your wife you're going to
be striking through all or not and it's
the same thing with an mes system it's
the same thing with the operators on the
shop floor it's good that that they have
insights into the system because you can
switch with the priorities
you can change them but on the other
hand it will make sure that your data is
up to date they know what they are doing
but they make sure that the system is
right and if something is wrong they're
going to notify it and they know okay
that task is completed so it should get
out of my list isn't it
so that is really a major one that we
see to to get those by and or the buying
of the the employees and make that
project successfully another one is um
making sure that you have uh
an independent vendor who really knows
what software it is how it goes etc etc
that you really are looking with
wide-eyed open view and not looking to
uh to dedicated specific physical issues
that you have already
and then
the last one and i think the most
important one is really knowing what you
want
and then i have
i should say there are two two main
things if you first of all you need to
know
what you want to achieve not only
tomorrow but also in five years let's
say so you need to know okay i'm at our
company who only wants to
solve a specific issue or do i want to
have a system that fully controls and
tracks every single bit and piece of the
process and then
in your choice that would also influence
your choice but on the other hand
always start small
make sure you have a plan to make it
faced and i know they sell they tell you
that always in software but specifically
with an mes system as we already
discussed it's it's not a one two three
thing
but on the other hand if you can really
start with
very
a very concrete issue like for example
broken parts like rush order management
like packaging and shipping start with
that
don't don't start scanning with the
whole factory and do a lot of
unnecessary scans no make sure that you
do the ones that really matter and with
that type of system you're gonna make
sure it gets accepted by the company it
gets accepted by the shop floor but as
well that you um that you start having
profit on it with a limited investment
you start to have profit of it straight
away and i think those are three things
which are really key in keeping into
your mind
