the immune system is a pretty complex

system that includes a number of

different cell types and organs the

function is to basically block destroy

or at least neutralize any harmful

substances that can enter the body and

when we look at the immune system we see

that there are three lines of defense

play00:38

these are three different mechanisms

play00:39

that these foreign invaders need to

play00:41

overcome in order to get into our bodies

play00:44

to cause harm the first line of defense

play00:46

is the physical and chemical barriers

play00:48

then we have what's called the innate

play00:50

immune response which is non-specific

play00:53

and the adaptive immune response which

play00:56

is specific and more effective let's

deal with the physical and chemical

barriers first these are things like the

play01:03

skin that covers your body that's a

play01:05

physical barrier that pathogens have to

play01:08

find a way to cross in order to get into

play01:10

our bodies along with the skin we have

play01:12

sweat glands that secrete sweat and

play01:15

sebaceous glands that secrete an oily

play01:17

substance this helps to lower the ph on

play01:20

the surface of the skin making it more

play01:22

acidic as well as to wash away harmful

play01:25

stuff making it less likely that these

play01:27

foreign microbes will get into our

play01:29

bodies and have harmful effects then in

play01:32

our mouth we have saliva and saliva has

play01:35

different enzymes in it one of which is

play01:37

lysozyme now lysozyme is an enzyme that

play01:40

will actually break down the bacterial

play01:43

cell walls which is good because you're

play01:45

killing bacteria but let's say something

play01:47

makes it past your saliva and into your

play01:50

stomach well we have hydrochloric acid

play01:52

that's released in your stomach and that

play01:54

acidic environment makes it harder for

play01:56

those harmful microbes to even survive

play01:59

and then we have the mucous membranes

these are mucus layers that line our

play02:04

digestive and respiratory tracts let's

play02:07

say you breathe in some kind of pathogen

play02:10

well a lot of those pathogens get

play02:12

trapped in the mucus and they don't get

play02:14

far enough inside to cause any issues we

play02:17

even have nasal hairs some of y'all got

play02:20

a little more than me

play02:21

but we have nasal hairs earwax and those

play02:24

will also trap pathogens again the goal

play02:28

here is to stop stuff from getting in

play02:31

that's our first line of defense the

play02:33

physical and chemical barriers we're

play02:35

trying to stop foreign invaders at the

play02:37

point of entry now obviously some stuff

play02:40

is gonna get past those barriers and we

play02:42

need to have some more protection on the

play02:44

inside so let's move on to the second

play02:46

line of defense and that is the innate

play02:49

immune response this is a non-specific

play02:52

response to those pathogens that manage

play02:54

to get past the first line of defense

play02:57

and it involves a variety of specialized

play02:59

cells and proteins they recognize and

play03:02

help to get rid of pathogens but in a

play03:04

more general way in this response we're

play03:07

dealing with phagocytes that will

play03:09

recognize foreign pathogens and they'll

play03:11

basically swallow them up using this

play03:13

process called phagocytosis

play03:16

first they bind the pathogen and then

play03:18

they wrap their cell membranes around

play03:20

the pathogen to take them in and once

play03:24

inside they will destroy the pathogens

play03:26

when those pathogens are destroyed

play03:29

they're basically broken up into small

play03:31

pieces and some of those pieces are then

play03:33

displayed on the surface of the

play03:35

phagocytes to be recognized by cytotoxic

play03:38

t cells which will do their job of

play03:41

destroying those phagocytes with the

play03:43

pathogen inside of them now we spoke

play03:46

about this a little bit in a previous

video and we'll go into even more detail

more thing to mention about the

non-specific innate immune response in

addition to what we spoke about with the

phagocytes and the t cells there are

proteins that are part of what's called

the complement system and no they don't

go around like complementing bacteria

and microbes and that kind of stuff but

play04:13

these proteins will get activated that

play04:15

was a dumb joke they'll get activated

and when that happens they will recruit

play04:20

more white blood cells to the site of

play04:22

infection and trigger an inflammatory

play04:25

response which causes things like the

play04:27

redness and the swelling and the pain

play04:29

that's typical with inflammation really

the goal here is to flood the area with

play04:33

more of the immune system components

play04:35

that's gonna help to fight off what

play04:37

could potentially be a pretty bad

play04:40

situation all right let's get to the

play04:42

specific adaptive immune response we're

play04:45

calling this specific because we're

play04:47

trying to eliminate specific pathogens

play04:49

that our bodies recognize because we

play04:52

were previously exposed to them it

play04:54

involves two types of white blood cells

play04:56

b lymphocytes and t lymphocytes aka b

play04:59

cells and t cells now we've spoken about

these before and we'll get into a whole

play05:04

lot more detail in a later video but

here's the short version of how this

works b cells are part of our

play05:11

antibody-mediated immunity they

play05:13

recognize a specific antigen and then

play05:15

they bind to that antigen and digest

play05:18

that antigen and then they present

play05:20

fragments of that antigen on their

play05:22

surfaces to be recognized by helper t

play05:24

cells those helper t cells will then

play05:26

trigger those b cells to mature into

play05:29

antibody producing b cells aka plasma

play05:33

cells and now that we have more antibody

play05:36

producing cells the antibodies can do

play05:39

their part in helping to kill those

play05:41

pathogens this is called humeral

play05:44

immunity it's the specific part of our

play05:46

immune system that involves antibodies

play05:49

but there's also cell mediated immunity

play05:51

that involves the cytotoxic t cells aka

play05:55

killer t cells these are the ones that

play05:57

we spoke about earlier and they will

play05:59

recognize an antigen that's presented on

play06:01

the surface of a cell things like

play06:03

viruses and once they are recognized

play06:05

they will kill that virus infected whole

play06:07

cell so those are our three lines of

play06:09

defense the physical and chemical

play06:12

barriers the innate immune response and

the adaptive immune response now i'm
