Outlines

that's
[Music]
it pause believe it or not the sauna
that you're looking at is here at Dai
this historic temple here smack dab in
the middle of the Forest in
[Music]
Japan when people say they want to move
to Japan most people mention Tokyo or
other places with big jobs and even
bigger city life not here Okawa is a
remote Village in Nai katsura a deep
green little corner of rice patties and
Farms tucked into the
[Music]
mountains statistically every other
person you meet in this Village came
from somewhere else turning empty
temples into stays and empty houses into
homes in Japan you hear a lot of stories
about declining population or uh
abandoned homes and abandoned temples
even we'll get more into that in a
second but this is kind of fresh this
new take of people who are moving to the
city because it has something new to
offer or something
old most people know the name Nai for
Nai Falls and the famous pilgrimage at
kumano
[Music]
Coto hello bet you weren't expecting
this huh welcome to the Kumo C the
sacred site of pilgrimage and
destination for a lot of people here to
the NACI area dress like
royalty my God I have a long journey
ahead so this outfit is supposed to be
the
pilgrimage of the Royals that's what
we're envisioning
here these walks are no joke but they
[Music]
are onward as much as I usually like to
check out all there is to do in a place
today I'm more interested in the why
behind the people moving
here today I'm joining up with a group
of Scouts from across the world who've
come to stay and learn more about what
daily life actually looks like here you
don't come on
[Music]
[Applause]
these Stones these stairs these are
actually carried up by hand one by one
by one by
one this one of the great charms of
places like do here is that you're
really you're walking through not just
history but really like the hands of the
community I'm going to have to say I'm
going to take a couple photos
oh wow good morning this is actually a
temple there used to be kind of like a
head monk who lived over in there but
now it's more of the community that
comes here takes a hike up through the
patties and the ways and the rivers I
just woke up and took maybe like a
10minute walk and came up here and
honestly it's like I think this is the
type of place that just kind of makes
you a morning person like even if you're
not a morning person you're just like
did you see those sunbeams though just
looking over like the cliffs side view
over there you can actually see the
ocean glittering like on the last little
bit of Hills over there it's so like
otherworldly
[Music]
there's a Japanese word that's used
around here pretty often utang or uturn
just like it sounds it refers to this
kind of reverse migration or people who
left the area and for whatever reason
decided coming back was better than
saying where they
were for
so one of the activities over hand on is
sort of revitalizing rice cultivation
here just because generally there's no
real commercial rice production done
here in these Terraces anymore it's if
you want to make it you make it yourself
most people realize it's actually
cheaper to buy rice in the stores as
with a lot of places in Japan kind of
the biggest hurdle to really Revitalize
an area is the Aging population problem
there's all this land and there's all
this beauty but there's not you know not
that many generations left to do the
traditional handpicked ways of
cultivating rice Etc that's one of the
main problems and questions that we're
sort of venturing into today
one key difference here is that yes
people are filling empty spaces but the
community really stays
involved The Growers the makers and even
the hunters who make rounds every
morning providing local food like wild
game while protecting homes and
Farms this evening we met one Hunter who
welcomes new faces from the city by
explaining how Okawa manages especially
with its higher number of deer and wild
boar for
oh and now we
[Music]
Feast feel
[Music]
I can't understand why I my
[Music]
[Music]
own it's good morning hello
everyone can you see that it's 8:06 good

Thai where we ate dinner the whole
cohort there's a there's a bunch of
people staying at the temple tonight and
I'm in one of the rooms one of the very
nice very nice rooms with amazing uh
calligraphy on the walls
I'm telling you D is immaculate I don't
know how they got such a historic
building to look so fresh but it is
unlike the very
[Music]
frish
bonus
say yesterday there was a sort of like
Mochi making experience with the
community in Okawa and imagine that
gorgeous rice Patty Heavenly backdrop
making muli and snacks and this one has
uh the white and then the green one back
there also has like on it has red beans
and K on it so it's just like a full
little protein snack that I smuggle
okay got to get out of bed get up laa
get up you there are a couple activities
you can do in the temple to help you
wake
up so first I serve you a morning fridge
you can put miso into
morning here's a picture a day or
morning in the life of the monks your
biggest B with your both hands yes and
then please put it on my hand and then
me
a little bit eat this rice and Missle is
taste
better eating authentic rice por
breakfast Tippy tapping through the
temple and deep into the tales of
[Music]
History this PO was built more than 600
years ago originally May
sometime maybe this uh building is the
oldest building in this town yeah I
think or just take a total reset With A
Moment's Peace and
[Music]
meditation why
thinka just concentrate on breathing out
okay
[Music]
I heard there's like a sauna available
so I might just go ahead and dip it dip
good morning everyone we made it made it
out of bed and we are trying the SAA I'm
actually here in the Hondo the main hall
of the temple here at da but they said
to write your wish on this little
beautiful piece of wood here and we're
actually going to cast it into the
Flames we're going to cast it make a
wish everyone what should we say this
will sound like really cheesy but hey
YouTube Maybe
