Lesson 2, Domain Overview.
Want to instantly see how your website fares
against the biggest players in your target market?
With the Domain Overview tool, you can do this with up to four
other competitors and get a clear picture of the landscape,
including who wins for Authority score, Backlinks,
Organic keywords, Traffic share, and more.
Let's show you how.
Exploring the Domain Overview tool.
To get started, just enter the competitor's website and hit search.
Note that you can use this report to analyze
the root domain and exact URL, a subdomain, or subfolder.
It'll give you a summary of that website's
performance covering three main categories,
organic search, paid search, and backlinks.
What's most useful is that you can go back historically
and see where your competition has been growing or declining,
which can tell you more about their strategy.
For instance, you might discover an increase in branded traffic over time,
paid keywords, or an increase in ad spend that
could potentially indicate something going on in your industry.
Another helpful feature is the ability to compose notes,
like you see here on the organic traffic module.
Semrush will automatically annotate when a Google update takes place,
or red notes when our Semrush sensor captures search volatility.
You can also create notes that include details
such as when a competitor made significant changes on their website,
or if some big event occurred in your industry.
Compare domains.
Now, let's move on to comparing your site
side-by-side against your biggest competitors.
Click on the Compare domains tab and
add up to four competitors you want to analyze.
You can select from the root domain, subdomain,
specific URL, or subfolder to get an instant report
that'll help you benchmark the most important metrics.
In the first table, you'll find how each
competitor fares an authority score,
organic traffic, the number of organic keywords,
backlinks, referring domains, and any paid keywords and their traffic cost.
This gives you an unambiguous snapshot of how
your website stacks up against your competitors,
including traffic share, whose running ads,
and who has the highest number of backlinks.
You can switch out any of the competitors at any time
if you want to analyze a different player in your market.
It's possible to underestimate or overestimate the competition.
For instance, a boutique client in the manufacturing space
was determined to compete against a multinational
firm for keywords related to 3D printing.
After seeing this comparison reports,
they realized that it was far more beneficial to compete with smaller companies
and make quicker wins within their geographic location.
They pivoted their keyword strategy to include more branded search terms,
which helped them gain more brand awareness and
recognition amongst US manufacturers,
and they found success there.
This report also shows you actionable data,
specifically related to keywords,
which is generated by the Keyword Gap tool.
We'll dive deeper into that and keyword Gap lesson,
but there you'll find all the keywords that your competitors are ranking for,
including shared and unique keywords that your site could be missing out on.
Now, let's show you how to compare a domain's performance
over time with the growth reports in the next tab.
Growth Report.
The Growth Report helps you see progress for organic and paid traffic
and backlinks across a selected time period,
giving you the most important data in one place.
Semrush's database provides historical data going back to 2012,
so it's a great resource that will give you a lot of context
on any domain and save you a lot of time in the process.
To get started, just enter your specific period,
such as the past three months, past six months,
season over season, quarter over quarter, or year over year.
You can use this report to analyze the growth of metrics,
such as estimated organic traffic, keywords, backlinks,
as well as estimated paid traffic and keywords.
You'll find this to be really helpful in
understanding the history of your competitor strategy,
seeing what worked in the past for them and whether or not
they made any drastic changes over time that impacted their performance.
If your industry is international, you'll see the organic traffic by
country reports where the most growth or stagnation occurred geographically.
Let's investigate this further by clicking the “show more” button.
Compare by Countries.
You'll be prompted to enter additional countries.
You can compare up to 5 in the Compare by Countries report.
This table gives you a bird's eye view of traffic share percentage,
plus fluctuations on organic and paid traffic,
keywords, and traffic cost over that designated time frame.
You have the option here to toggle between organic and paid metrics,
and to select a specific date range to display on the graph here.
With that said, let's put the Domain Overview tool into practice
and conduct competitive research in real time.
Using the Domain Overview to analyze your competitors.
Let's imagine you're a marketing specialist at an agency,
and your manager is asking you to perform
a competitive analysis for a new client.
They are in the business of high-end furniture
and interior design for office spaces.
The client provides you with a list of competitors,
and they want to know what kind of
organic traffic and paid traffic they receive.
After entering their domains in the Domain Overview tool,
we see which sites have the highest authority in traffic,
and we also note a few other changes.
Most of these competitors are receiving significantly
less organic traffic than the previous period,
and they've increased their paid traffic cost and response.
Right off the bat, you can use this competitive intel to let your
client know that within their industry there's a decline in organic traffic.
This might be attributed to a variety of factors,
such as economic reasons, supply chain issues,
or something else happening within the market.
You can also provide them with the estimated paid traffic cost
to help create a competitive advertising strategy
using these figures as a benchmark.
As for a client, this kind of information is invaluable.
You can easily share your findings with them
by clicking on the export button on the module,
or you can build out a formal competitive analysis using my reports.
