Takeaways
Q & A

okay guys I want to talk about bloating
so whether you're a coach or whether
you're an individual who experiences
bloating I want to talk about some ways
we can start to narrow down a
troubleshoot kind of what might be going
on now I'm not going to talk about all
the solutions to bloting in this video
now but I I I guess what the point of
this is is to start to uh show you guys
how to be a little bit more like I guess
a detective and how to actually
ascertain maybe what could be
contributing and causing that bloating
so I'm going to talk about it as if a
client came to me and said that they
were experiencing bloating now a lot of
the time the way the conversation might
go is someone might say I get bloated
what should I do and often I work with
coaches who they get asked that question
by their client and then they come to me
and they're like what do I do my client
gets
bloated and the first step is always to
ask more questions okay so the kind of
questions I would ask at that point
would be when is the bloating and its
worst okay so is it on a scale of 1 to
10 10 being your like N9 months pregnant
about to birth you got a beach ball in
your belly and one being you can feel it
but you probably can't see it or no one
else can really notice it how severe
does it get and then someone says oh it
gets to n out of 10 I look massive okay
cool now I want to know is it like that
every single day is it like it one day a
week is it like that after you eat pizza
once a month like when is it like that
so someone may two people may say I get
bloated and one person may mean I get
bloated 10 out of 10 all day every day
and the other person might mean I get
like a two out of 10 blow where I feel
uncomfortable but you can't see it it's
not distension and I get it when I go
out on weekends so we really need to
know what it is we're talking about so
that's step number one is it distension
how severe is it and then how often is
it okay then what I know I want to know
so someone says okay it's it's 9 out of
10 and it's every single day okay is it
all day or is it at certain times does
it get worse after you eat is it do you
wake up 9 out of 10 or do you eat and
then it's 9 out of 10 or does it start
at a one out of 10 and Bill throughout
the day and by the time you go to bed
it's a 9 out of 10 that will help as
well and I'll talk about one in a moment
um and then the next question I've got
would be is there are there any triggers
Okay so from a dietary perspective do
you notice that it's worse after certain
meals and often someone will say oh no I
don't think so it's any time I anything
and then I I still want to ask more
question I say okay so it's any time you
eat is there anything that makes it
worse though what if you to eat onion
and garlic and they'll think and they'll
say you know what actually that does
make it worse or maybe it doesn't okay
but but I always want to ask what about
onion what about garlic other fod map
Foods okay you can you can ask whatever
fod map Foods you want but I want to
ascertain our fod Maps making it work or
not okay and they say no no no it's not
that okay cool what about what about
protein what about if you to eat a steak
does that make it worse or or would it
actually be a little bit better and then
they think oh no it's about the same you
know that's that's not an issue so then
what I want to do is I want to ascertain
is it maybe a stomach acid issue are
they struggling to actually break down
their food so now we know okay is it fod
Maps is it protein and now I'll just ask
you know junky food you know if you eat
pizza does that make it worse if you eat
ice does that make it worse what if you
eat something really clean what what if
you just ate chicken or what if you just
ate you know whatever it is but I just
ask like a few different meal ideas and
just get an idea is it literally after
anything you eat is it only after s
because sometimes what you'll notice on
the five M question someone you you
might say does anything make it worse
and they'll say no and you say if you
ate onion and garlic would have make it
worse and a lot of the time I get this
answer they go H I don't know
I don't eat anything garlic I think it
made me I think it made me feel worse I
stopped eating it a couple years ago and
then it's like okay so you haven't told
me you got a fall up sensitivity because
you've intuitively cut it out but that's
helpful information yeah chili would be
another one night shades how do you go
with tomato how do you go with eggplant
chili capsicum stuff like that oh I
don't eat them they don't really make me
feel good you know that's we need to
know that stuff so even if someone says
nothing makes it worse still ask those
questions okay
and then the last one I would mention is
and and a really obvious one is what are
bow movements like because if someone's
not having a b movement if someone's con
oh yeah I go be second or third day well
that's probably why you bloated and if
we don't know that and we're starting to
think well could be what they're eating
it could be this it could be that but
they're just not having bow movements
that's such an easy fix so those are the
questions we want to ask okay now we've
now gathered all the data okay step one
is to gather all the data we can and
again I'm not going to talk about every
single possible solution Under the Sun
but once we have those rough ideas it
gives us some options okay so let's say
someone let's say someone's not actually
distended they're bloating they say
they're bloated and what they mean by
that is something different okay they
say well so the question I asked I said
you know is it is it like a beach ball
are you pregnant kind of thing um I take
that a step further and I say could
someone else see the bloating okay cuz
if they're not sure they're like oh it's
like a five out of 10 that's what I say
put someone else there and sometimes
they say no no no you can't visually see
it I just feel bloated and I'm not
saying this all the time but sometimes
that can be a psychological thing where
maybe someone's had a history of
disordered eating and maybe that
sensation of feeling full is is
essentially being mistaken as bloating
so that can be a whole separate thing
okay um but if we're actually going with
a bloating and they said yes it's
distension and it's whatever you can you
can see it
so let's work backwards bowel movements
so a we want to make sure they're having
regular bowel movement at least one
bowel movement a day if they're not
having at least one decent bowel
movement a day I'm going to begin with
that it's often a really easy fix and
there's things we could do like make
sure that they're hydrated we could add
in stuff like partially hydrolized gu
gum really safe form of fiber um we
could use magnesium citate it's not
really El laxative per se but it can
help with motility we could use if we
needed to some a little bit more potent
like magnesium oxide which does actually
pull water into the bowel and
essentially stimulate a bowel movement
we could use Pro kinetic AIDS like a
buas we could use Center T there's a
whole lot of different options there
okay but Step One is okay I want to make
sure you're having a b movement did that
fix it no okay so now we go to those
trigger foods did they identify any did
they identify fob maps and issue did
they identify n Chad issue they whatever
it might be okay and now not that it's
going to be a long-term fix but we can
at least modify
the diet and see if that helps it we can
try a lower fob map style diet or we can
cut out the key offending fob Maps or we
can try let's say they said you know
what meat is really what's making it
worse okay maybe it's a stomach acid
issue let's try Apple side vinegar let's
have a tablespoon of apple vinger with
your meal at the end of your meal when
you feel bloated sip on some ACV and
some water does that make it better okay
so we can start to troubleshoot so we've
troubleshoot troubleshooted troubles
shot um diet troubl shot um bound
movements constipation stomach acid and
then if it's still none of those things
sometimes it won't be like sometimes it
won't be an easy fix okay but you know
this this at least lets us identify
those those low hanging sh it it could
still be something a little bit more
significant you know it could be sibo
small intestinal disposes
or any other form of disposers could be
parasites could be sea like there could
be other things going on and
unfortunately in in a percentage of
cases like we will need to do
antimicrobials we'll need to kind of
create that that imbalance um obviously
there's stuff we can try initially yeah
there's more safu options we can try
probotics
saes Spore based probotics really like
that combination um sometimes adding in
some stuff like partially hyd hydrolized
Guam can be a really safe option there
even if it's not like a fiber issue per
se so there's still some Safeguard
things we can use if we do suspected SEO
before we jump into
antimicrobials but the point I want to
make is sometimes we don't even need to
get there yeah a lot of the time people
he bloting they think must be sibo must
be disposes therefore we need to do
antimicrobials and at least 50% of the
time you don't need to at least 50% of
the time if we modify if we support
stomic acid we make sure that they're
eating enough maybe there's a fiber
issue or maybe there's an issue breaking
down protein or whatever it might be if
we support those things probably half
the time we don't need to jump into ANS
so like I said that's not going to be a
fix for every single person every single
call of bloating but if you are a
coaching the space I think one of the
one of the underrated but most important
things we can do is ask questions and
that'll give us data and over years or
over over time of doing this you'll find
out what the best questions are for you
okay there's questions that a my goto
questions for any symptom and that helps
me ascertain kind of what could be the
cause of that symptom these are the
questions I ask for bloating um but
you'll kind of find out what you need to
ask to elicit that information from your
client because if you don't ask you're
not going to find out yeah sometimes
client will off up everything you need
to know but a lot of the time clients
won't do that and so you need to know
what's the data I need and how do I draw
that
out
