Transcripts
I've recently come to the end of the
longest job that I've worked on in
nearly 5 years a three-part brand funded
mini documentary series about the future
of healthcare working with increasingly
longtime collaborators detail films over
an epically exhausting and arguably
rewarding 6-month period from start to
finish on this challenging project it
was the biggest overall budgeted job
that I've directed in a while with a
budget that ended up being in the region
of the
$370,000 Mark I wanted to share
everything that feasibly can with you
from the initial pitching of the job to
the extensive development pre-production
shoot challenges and post-production
hurdles getting into the real
nitty-gritty there is so much to share
so I'm going to split this breakdown
into a four- parter as it's going to
take a while to piece together this
first part is a look at the initial
pitching process and developing the
pitch winning
treatment my involvement with this job
began with a WhatsApp message from will
the founder owner and resident
cinematographer for when he's not off
shooting other things at detail
[Music]
films Scotty are you around next
Thursday there's a well it's a a pitch
in person we have to go and present our
ideas I'm off Wednesday Thursday Friday
to top draw but I'm around Monday
Tuesday next week they want to have a
cool just who eye contact work with him
before so he very kindly thought of us
for this one he wants to have a little
cool on like Tuesday afternoon just to
run through our pitch as it is so that
he can feedback before we then do it
with like the social media and the
marketing director you know obv yeah
it's an unpaid treatment but the the
reward could be pretty
legitimate I caught up with Will to ask
why as a production company that works
with a bunch of different freelan
directors why did you think of me
specifically to pitch on this job I
wanted to partner with the director that
I was fully confident would be
interested in fully owning it and not be
someone that just does the bare minimum
because we are a very small team in
house we needed someone that we could
really like rely on to not just build
the creative but be part of the Journey
of doing this whole project so you know
as we'd work together Scott we know how
each other works and enjoy working
together and as this could have been
something that was going to run for like
6 to n months to find someone and that
you trust and you have worked with those
before um was was pretty pretty key
going into this it was a bit of a weird
one because in all honesty the client
didn't really know what they wanted at
this point other than a three-part
series they'd done something the year
before that they were super happy with
in terms of its content but they didn't
think it was particularly engaging
visually so the brief is quite open
which was both a blessing and a curse
I'd found a title from one of the
briefing docs had been sent that said
Mission sustainable health I also had
Benji another detail films collaborator
that was going to be available over the
weekend to lend me a hand ahead of this
first soft pitch before the real deal to
the whole team on Thursday I set about
writing looking at some references and
trying to keep things vague whilst
talking about the different sorts of
things we could do in the world of
visuals to keep this interesting I began
by building the deck in Apple's free
keynote using one of my own treatment
templates as a starting point and
adapting it with branding and using the
Brand's colors and fonts let's look at
the first iteration of the deck I
created so after a few days of reading
up on some of the briefing documents
that they'd sent over as well as doing a
loot of my own research this is the
first kind of iteration of the deck
before anyone else had seen it there was
lots of gaps but I kind of started to
build something but it was mostly based
around visuals because they didn't
really know what exactly it was they
wanted so I've started with a brief
introduction this Series has the
opportunity to grab and Captivate a
global audience informing and educating
people on the amazing work going on
behind the scenes to create a more
sustainable future a more connective
future but Above All Else a healthier
future for both our civilization and our
planet the proposed subject matter here
is already fascinating but in a time of
copious Choice social media lives and
short attention spans it's more
important than ever how we package this
series to really capture and engage with
our audience how we going to do it a
kind of vague introduction here leading
to there some ideas about how I'm going
to make it look normally I'd have my
name on these decks as well as the
Director but the way that we were
approaching this was trying to feel like
a big organization like there's more of
a brand deck than a mi deck even though
it was a mi deck striking the correct
tone here is fundamental we want to tell
emotive stories that inform and specific
subject matter aside the most important
tool we have to do that is with the
visuals remember they've said that they
wanted more interesting visuals there
are four specific elements that we feel
will really Elevate these stories it's
good job this wasn't one that I sent
over because I can see that I've still
got my template text in there how have I
arrived at these points I looked at what
they made before assessed what I didn't
like about it previously they had a
presenter who was an unknown presenter
and they were kind of giving like a
daytime TV vibe that I just don't dig
and I don't think it's very good for
engaging content particularly online
where the audience aren't committed to
watching it even though we are making
like short form documentaries these
were're going to be between 5 7 8 minute
long runtime episodes how can we hook
people how can we keep them engaged the
structure of our narratives will play an
important role in retaining audiences
and leave them wanting to learn more
we'll do away with slow daytime TV
introductions that only prolong getting
to the meat of the subject and open each
episode with one scroll stopping
question I.E in the year 2053 how will
people give birth what hospitals look
like in the year 2073 obviously we'll be
hypothesizing but giving actual dates
rather than just referring to the Future
allow people to connect with a moment
they can visualize in their own timeline
and then I've just put in a note more
cuz I want to expand on this each
episode will end with a cliffhanger
leaving our viewers who is eager to
learn more language of cinemar way of
saying we're going to make it look nice
cuz quite honestly look quite corporate
what they made before to stri the
correct time visually we will do away
with traditional corporate feeling
Talking Heads and approach this with an
eye more akin to that of the dramatic
Art of Storytelling found in cinema I'll
let you pause and read cuz if I go
through all of this we're going to be
here for like an hour basically we're
talking about how we're going to make it
look nice but I'm not just saying we're
going to make it look beautiful I'm
saying that there'll be a purpose for
the way something looks like we're going
to frame it in a certain way to convey
sense of emotion because as we all know
and here time and time again
storytelling is the best way to engage
people rather than just hitting people
with interviews and hard cold facts
Healthcare can feel a bit scary if we're
just shooting in hospitals and clinical
maybe not scary is not right word but
it's not particularly sexy and it feels
clinical and cold I've taken some grabs
from a few things that I've watched in a
lot of more corporate videos of which
their previous series felt quite
corporate and maybe this isn't how
what's happened but it looks like they
were like okay we're going to do these
interviews let's rock up we'll find
somewhere to film do the interview I'll
see if there's something to film there
not planning like that is going to lead
to not the best outcome particular when
you're kind of tied for time and time is
money and you've got local crew that
you're hiring or whatever you not be
able to afford the time to just work it
out on the day so I was adamant that we
need to be conducting pre interviews
with everyone we're going to be
interviewing and just do our research
make sure we had beautiful locations
that we're going to be able to shoot in
and plenty of options for being roll not
to sound like a broken record but I
don't know what these docks are actually
going to be about yet I think animation
is a quick and easy get out of jail free
card so I suggested powerful resource we
have our disposal is animation oh look I
got a little gift in there talked about
gifts before some people love it some
people don't I think it's good then I
went uh I did a a cheat they want this
to be visually exciting this is a chance
to have some fun so I literally went to
I candy.com if you don't know about I
candy.com you should check it out cuz
it's awesome and it's just a website
full of gifts with all different types
of visual techniques and I've even named
this I candy here's another GIF so I
kind of pulled a few things I thought
okay well we can do this on minimal
budget these are simple techniques we
can do I just need to give a bit of
thought when honing in on a point which
any perspectives on a subject we can
visually demonstrate this by Shifting
the viewing aspect ratio it was an idea
it didn't make it to my later pitch as
you'll see collages could be used to
piece together a hypothesis I was
picturing item in a science lab or
doctor's surgery like a test tube and
then we capture that in lots of
different locations and build something
like the collage below transition wipes
could be used to piece together a
hypothesis rather than just cutting from
A to B we're doing
something cool I love a crash Zoom could
be used to introduce a person or to
emphasize a point I thought this is
probably going to be a bit fun but I'm
testing the water see what they're like
duplication if someone spoke about
multiplying of cells or literally
something focused around cloning for
example we could illustrate it this way
again I don't know I have no idea and I
need to stop saying again because we've
got the point I don't know what this is
going to be about but I was like yeah
split screen multiple people it's quite
easy thing to do and it can be quite fun
so maybe that's something we can do
match Cuts everyone loves a match cut an
alternate idea to the wipe there portals
we can use objects to create portals
from one scene into the next it's classy
it's cool when done well and I wanted to
get some portals in my real scream wipes
nothing revolutionary but anything like
this I think when you're talking to a
corporation that's not creative is going
to impress them they said that they want
something more visually interesting so
that's what I'm trying to give them
presenter we're on the lookout for a
young diverse female presenter ID
someone who's not British or American
that can appeal to a global audience
they wanted these videos that was
something that was in The Briefing deck
to appeal to the world and someone had
mentioned that they were less keen on
British and American
because we apparently are polarizing to
the rest of the world and I was
suggesting using young diverse female
presenter because our large number of
academic Professionals in the medical
field are white men so I felt like it
was important to try and bring in a
range of backgrounds of people to not
alienate others where we can and this
was an obvious easy win for doing that
more imagery trying to paint a picture
in people's heads cuz people have very
little imagination the edit is fund
mental and bringing all of our topic
learnings and illustrations together in
a cohesive structure that makes the
information easy to understand and
connect with blah blah blah blah blah
blah I just one example that I linked to
which I might actually I don't even know
if this is my example I think early on
talking with Benji he might have sent me
this and be like you should watch this
so I pulled that and there's an image
that I haven't replaced yet from my
working template talked about music and
sound design always talk about music and
sound design particularly sound design
to you and I film making type people
it goes without saying sound design
music um to create emotion to build
things but to the corporate types I
think it's worth saying cuz cuz they'll
be like oh yeah I didn't I didn't even
think about that thank you summary to
excited so this is where I got to and I
sent this to my friend and default
Mentor Tom Brown who is a super talented
director himself whenever you're sending
any treatment to anyone if you can get
eyes on it that are not the client you
good because feedback is invaluable I'll
always be running my treatments past
someone more often not the production
company themselves that I'm working with
ask them their feedback but I'll try
people whose thoughts and opinions I
value to let me know what they think and
Tom I really respect and like his work
and think he has a good brain so when
he's not busy he's often very kind with
giving me thoughts and feedback that is
not an invitation for you to go and
hassim on the tinet because he's a busy
man himself get your own mentor and yeah
those are some awesome very helpful
notes from Tom to me and now I'm going
to show you what we actually presented
to the client at this point I've also
had a call and some comments with Benji
getting his input mostly what we ended
up doing is delegating so I was like can
you get me some more examples of
story-driven documentaries so Benji went
off doing that and this is what I
presented to the client and for context
I did this remotely cuz I was already
booked in Switzerland but Helen the
producer will the owner and Benji were
all there in person for this initial
pitch and I was on a big screen in the
room zoomed in and trying to deliver the
best way that I know how to deliver
which is trying to be myself which is
always a bit of a risk cuz some people
like it and some people hate it um and I
probably deliver with a lot more
enthusiasm than I'm about to deliver to
you but here we are taking on you can
see Tom's feedback I found something
that's a bit more futuristic it's a bit
light it's got some green in there
talked about the client as a healthcare
company and how forward thinking they
are in a time of rapid changes in our
climate and health of new AI advances
announced seemingly daily and the ever
pending threat of global warming we find
ourselves feeling unsettled and
overwhelmed because we do and this is
this was me taking what Tom has said to
me about putting myself in into this um
and I was like well how do I feel about
this
about advances this series is the
opportunity to settle some of the
concerns that lie ahead to grab and
Captivate a global audience informing
and educating people on the amazing work
going on behind the scenes to create a
more sustainable future a more connected
future but Above All Else a healthier
future for both our civilization and our
planet and yeah you've heard this before
look and feel ah it's so nice and green
and striking the correct tone here I'm
pretty sure that this is exactly what I
put in my initial one but I might have
changed out the imagery I've talked more
about structure language of Cinema
here's our first gift I'm just going to
let you pause and read a lot of these
rather than me going through the whole
thing so this isn't become a 3-hour long
YouTube video but I talked about the
language of Cinema put in a nice GIF and
I've got some images from the movie Her
by looks of it as well as I think it's
French dispatch this is basically
exactly as you saw before animation bit
more context here we're very fortunate
on this job that details in to the
company wanted us to have a good shot at
winning it and he'd seen on LinkedIn the
week before someone moaning basically
about how like we put so much time and
effort into pitching and then we just
get told no and like that's it and you
never really get any chance for feedback
or like sort of constructive criticism
so he said that a few days before the
pitch he could give us some time on a
zoom call to look at where the deck was
currently at and give us some feedback
um so I kind of did like a soft pitch to
him it was overwhelmingly positive his
feedback but one thing that he said was
was they see so much Netflix explained
references all the time so maybe remove
that I think I actually kept a gift from
Netflix explained but I did get rid of
mentioning it in the text there eye
candy I've trimmed it right down faffed
with the layout a little bit love this
one of the ball on the right as I'm
presenting these I'm talking them
through and I'm saying how this is
really going to draw people in and I'm
probably swearing and making myself look
like a knob cuz that's how I talk so
I've spoken about presenter I've said if
a presenter is used but then on the next
page and this was actually written by
Benji cuz we'd spoken about how we both
thought a presenter was a terrible idea
so he wrote up why we shouldn't have a
presenter and I might have tweaked a
little bit but I'm pretty sure from
memory that this is just his words just
old school TV style like not necessary
for what we were trying to do not unless
they were going to be like the face of
the company or if they were a well-known
person that was going to bring in people
to watch it but they weren't going to be
story L these are some of the examples
that Benji pulled together some great
documentaries basically my images again
just trying to make it look all pretty
the edit got some more references by
this point I can't remember because it
did take a long time to go through this
deck and I think we only had it was
either 45 minutes or an hour for the
pitch if we watched through these I
might have asked people to watch them in
their own time afterwards more examples
of strong performing documentaries music
and Sounders I hadn't changed why us
this is something that either Helen or
will put together together with just
like some examples of cost- effective
but nice looking documentary work and
some of the big client names that
they've worked with and that's where it
ended we were out of time the picture
was done and actually at the end of it I
left it feeling really good because the
main boss lady on the board of whatever
this sort of Department was within this
organization content department or I
don't know marketing who really knows
she said that she loved my presenting
Style she said it was so
refreshing
and Will from detail in particular is uh
often
critiques me being me not because he
doesn't love me right will not because
you don't love me but because I
sometimes am a little bit inappropriate
and outspoken in a world
of not saying the wrong thing I just say
what I think but I think it showed my
enthusiasm for it so a couple days later
they came back saying that that they
loved it um however it was a little off
the mark because they wanted it to be
more future Focus they held up their
hands like we weren't very clear with
what we wanted um and you know you got
an old briefing document so could you
just pull together some more references
that are kind of more future focused so
we get an idea of how you might make it
look visually so with not much time I
immediately headed to my favorite image
referencing websites and the one that I
use the most is conveniently the sponsor
of this video Fram set I've spoken about
Fram set on the channel before I've been
using their database since I discovered
them a little over a year ago now one of
the things that makes them stand out
from other image referencing sites is
their large database of commercial work
to be honest it's a commercial
director's dream and two sick features
they've added in the past year that I
would have loved when creating the deck
for this job last summer is firstly the
addition of gifts in the database or
motions as they've named them and
they've also added similar search so
when I found this image of an operating
room for example that wasn't quite right
I can now just click similar search and
I get all of these awesome frames to
choose from I can't rate frame set
enough as a resource so thank you so
much to the team for sponsoring this
video and supporting what I'm trying to
share here on the channel if you want
help creating your own pitch winning
treatments then sign up to Fram set via
the link in the description below and
use the code Scott Pizza to check out
for 10% off your subscription here we
are future refs I didn't have to present
this I just sent this over as is crazy
scary looking images of babies in bags
and some of it's cold which is against
some of the notes that my friend Tom was
saying but it felt like it felt quite
futuristic and I like the contrast some
of the same imagery as before and some
new stuff that I found future-based
reality I wanted to write a little bit
about what this might actually look like
and how I wanted to approach it I didn't
really like the idea of doing something
skyfi in the Star Wars realm for example
I wanted it to feel more based in a
world that we know which I think is what
black Mar does so well it's always kind
of this could be in a few years time so
what I wrote was the best depictions of
the future are grounded in our present
day reality because it makes it
plausible it's relatable to objects and
processes we use and know today less
floating chairs and bubble Jetson flying
cars and more taking environments and
everyday objects we know and relate to
using creative art Department lighting
and well integrated V effects to create
a believable future firstly I love the
idea of illustrating Concepts that we
discuss with acting talent to in scenes
in a conceptual World secondly by
capturing any persons of authority of
the matter I'm talking about the people
we're actually going to be interviewing
there important to add that we shouldn't
always see any interviewees narration in
a in a powerful tool oh no I sent that
over with bad
English either in a striking setting
that screams progress or futuristic or
displays them in a futuristic feeling
medium there was going to be some
challenges here one getting our
interviewees into a space they're
working professionals getting their
availability and then getting them to a
space being able to afford to film in
that space even if we can find a
location near where they're based that
works then also the budget was more than
the 200 we've been told at the beginning
by this point they had said that it was
slightly larger than what we thought we
were going to have money but it was
going to be still limited when we were
talking about you know doing
dramatizations of things so it wasn't
really going to be on the cards to
travel to Australia for example to
interview people because that would have
just eaten into way too much of the
budget I was trying to come up with
creative ways that we could include
people that were in a non-cost effective
part of the world to film in so I
suggested doing Holograms which is maybe
against what I said about not using Star
Wars style imagery but I'm a massive
walking contradiction so there you go
then I start to talk about animation and
how the style of these animations might
look to feel a bit more futuristic
someone had actually mentioned on the
call that they love the series
extrapolations so I actually went and
watched this whole series as I guess
research but I just binged watched over
the weekend cuz it was quite
entertaining as well but the only thing
I really saw that I thought would work
from it was the way that they did their
opening title sequence because there was
likely going to be some statistics and
numbers and not very visually exciting
things that we going to have to present
here so I was looking for ideas of how
we might present them we got some more
gifts we love a gift more imagery some
images you've seen before coupled with a
lot more gifts one more thing on the use
of color this is a subtle but powerful
tool we can use to bring a future feel
into the work as well as to Aid in
creating moods for a scene to elevate
emotion where appropriate we're not
suggesting that we tur it into a
fully-fledged skyf fight epic but as we
craft our narratives it will become
clear where we can use what approaches
and techniques to tell these stories in
the most engaging and compelling ways
possible and here's my thank you that
you missed before Healthcare is a vital
part of Modern Life major concerns of
the future and direction in which our
Healthcare is heading that we would like
set aside and tying it back to me but we
but how it makes me feel the opportunity
to learn ourselves as as well as educate
on the journey to creating this series
for you makes us extremely excited about
the idea of working with in crafting
compelling emotion Le and beautiful
content to raise awareness for and
depict the future of

healthcare a couple weeks later and
we've not heard anything and we're
thinking well at least we tried and I'm
thinking well at least I spent like four
or five days of my life working on this
and not going to get paid
awesome but then Helen got an email
saying can we please get details company
information to set you up on the system
as a
supplier we're like What are we is this
a is this a confirmation turns out it
was a confirmation and that's it that's
the treatment that one us this pitch
coupled with a very detailed breakdown
from Helen on how we would spend the
budget and a bit of a song and dance by
all selling how detail films was the
perfect partner to make this series and
our enthusiasm was real cuz we thought
it was going to be something super
special there is so much more to share
on this Mammoth job so make sure to
subscribe for more semi tips and
interesting Insider industry knowledge
