Q & A
What was the opportunity provided by the change in EU directives in 2019 regarding truck length?
-The change in EU directives in 2019 allowed for an extension of the overall length of trucks, which gave Volvo an opportunity to improve aerodynamic efficiency in their truck designs.
How does Volvo approach styling and aerodynamics when designing a new truck model?
-Volvo fuses aerodynamics with design in small increments, starting with sketches and merging technical engineering input. They iterate the design and technical parameters together until they optimize for both styling and aerodynamic efficiency.
What makes the Volvo FH truck iconic?
-The Volvo FH is considered the most iconic truck worldwide. Volvo's design approach with the FH focuses on keeping the styling simple, elegant and Scandinavian.
How did Volvo create a customer-focused area in their truck designs?
-Volvo created a customer partnership area in their truck designs where customers can feel proud of their brand and Volvo can also feel proud of their trucks.
What was the main ambition of the Volvo design team with the new FH trucks?
-The main ambition was to create a new visual strength on the road by extending the front for aerodynamics while also creating an efficient look.
How did Volvo collaborate across teams to optimize the design?
-Volvo collaborated closely across design, engineering, aerodynamics, thermal and manufacturing teams to iteratively refine the FH truck design to a point of perfection.
Why is meeting and understanding customers important for Volvo's design process?
-Meeting and understanding customers is imperative to Volvo's design process to ensure their products are designed to best meet the needs of their customers.
What pencil sketching techniques does Volvo use in early phases of design?
-In early concept phases, Volvo designers start by sketching concepts with simple pencils before merging with technical engineering input.
How did Volvo work to optimize aerodynamics in the new FH truck designs?
-Volvo optimized aerodynamics by extending the front of the truck to improve air flow while styling the body to create an efficient visual look.
What Scandinavian design principles were applied to the Volvo FH?
-Volvo aimed for a simple, elegant and Scandinavian look with the FH trucks, focusing on minimalist, functional design.
Outlines
😀 Introducing Volvo's New Truck Designs
Jonathan Disley, design director at Volvo Trucks, explains how recent EU regulations allowing longer truck lengths created an opportunity to improve aerodynamic efficiency in their new truck designs. He describes their design process, starting with sketches and collaborating with engineers to optimize form and function. Disley emphasizes keeping the iconic styling simple and Scandinavian.
👷 Creating a New Visual Strength
The Volvo design team aimed to take a different approach to create a new bold truck styling. By extending the front end for aerodynamics while maintaining an efficient look, they achieved a new visual strength on the road. Disley remarks on the beauty of the final product and the successful collaboration between design and engineering.
🤝 Understanding Customers Through Partnership
According to Disley, understanding Volvo's truck customers is critical to their design process. They created a customer partnership area in the trucks to showcase the brand and make customers proud. Meeting and collaborating with customers ensures Volvo designs products that meet their needs.

hi my name is Jonathan disley design
director for Volvo trucks so in 2019 the
EU changed the directives for the
overall length of a truck that gave us
an opportunity to extend the length of
our products to allow for a better
aerodynamic
efficiency when we're designing a new
product we fuse the aerodynamics with
the design in small
increments first we come with a concept
we sketch with a simple pencil and we
merge that together with the technical
input from the engineers slowly as we
evolve the design we changed the design
and we changed the technical parameters
to allow for production to allow for the
efficiency and to bring those two
elements of design engineering together
until they become finalized and until
they become perfect if you will the FH
uh truck is probably the most iconic
truck in the world world and of course
everything we do from a design
perspective should make that product
better in the way that we styled this
product we kept it simple we kept it
elegant and most of all we kept it
Scandinavian when we designed the trucks
our customers are in our Focus therefore
we created this customer partnership
area where they can feel proud of their
brand and we can also feel proud of our
trucks the design team wanted to really
do something different
which created a new visual strength on
the road to combine those things where
you have an extension of the front to
get an aerodynamic design but also to
create this efficient look was really
the main ambition from the design team
it's um beautiful looking product and um
when the design team looks back on their
achievements and uh how the
collaboration with the engineers with
the aerodynamicists with the thermal
team with manufacturing everything
together has come really to a point
where it's utter Perfection and I think
that this product will be a huge success
meeting with customers talking with
customers understanding our customers is
imperative to the way that we design our
