hi guys Paul best here and welcome to
the radioshop workshop and in this video
I'm going to show you how to do your P90
pickup height set in to get a better
sound from your guitar and we're going
to look at the pull piece height setting
as well because they're going to be sort
of quite linked really in a way now
there's a common misconception that you
know if you're not getting enough volume
out of your P90s just raise the pull
pieces but there's a problem with that
you need to actually raise the coil as
well so generally we're going to be
raising the whole pickup globally rather
than just pole pieces so I'm going to
show you where to set the whole pieces
for a really good tone and then how to
set your pickup height we're going to
use a measurement I know the guys out
there who say you know just use your
ears are going to hate that but for a
lot of us we like to have something
repeatable redoable so if you find a
setting that you like and it gives you a
great sound and then you change it later
on well you want to be able to go back
and also some of us just haven't got the
experience to just set
by ear so we're going to give you a
measurement that you can follow on the
measurement that I follow religiously
because I'm a pickup maker I like to
hear that the difference between two
sets of pickups is down to the pickup
not down to maybe a difference in height
and he used this guitar which is owned
by Paul Dunn the other political pickups
it's a lovely Gibson Les Paul junior
which he picked up and it's got soap
bars as you can see and I'm going to
talk later on about dog years if you own
dog ear pickups it's going to be a
little bit harder I'm going to talk
about that at the end of the show so
Bart is a bit more straightforward now
if we look at the soap bar pickup you
will see that there are two height
adjustment screws in the pickup so these
are body mounted pickups so basically
there are two screws which are going
into the body and that's how you go down
by screwing in you go down and by
letting the screws out you come up and
there's some material underneath the
pickups which is sort of pushing the
pickups up if you like it could be
either Springs or maybe some sort of
foam material in a lot of cases if you
can't get your pickups up high enough
you may need to get the strings off get
the pickups out and get more material
underneath which is going to push the
pickup up some of you will have to do
that some of you won't because the
screws and where the pickups are are
going to facilitate a good height
measurement what material to use if you
just have a little look on eBay or
Google and you put foam in there's lots
of foam that you can cut to the shape of
the pickup or close to the shape of the
pickup that you'll get underneath you
don't need a lot if you're in the UK
I've been known even to use a washing up
sponge obviously one that's never ever
been used I don't know what they're
called in the US but it can be cut to a
certain size and you can even pack that
material underneath and it will push the
pickup up now a little bit on P90s
before we start the hype measurement I
think it is the like the most underrated
pickup design out there the story of
P90s is basically you know it was the
first major design from Gibson and then
when they designed the humbucker they
saw this as a sort of lesser you know
older model which they would sort of
phase out and they've got a sort of
relegated if you like to the the junior
models Les Paul junior asked you Junior
and so on through time it's been seen as
a lesser pickup than the hamburger but a
great P90 has got this wonderful
expressive quality and I don't know any
pickup design which is so sort of
sensitive to volume changes as well if
you turn it down on the volume the
pickup changes character and there
aren't that many pickups to do that they
just get quieter so I think that the P90
is just such an underrated design and
you know we absolutely love them now
we're going to look at pole piece height
setting what I like to do is set the
pole pieces absolutely so that the top
of the pole pieces is flush with the
cover now you can do it that way so they
just completely flat across or sometimes
I like to do as well is put a little bit
of a radius in so I set all the pole
pieces so that the very top is just
flush with the cover
and then the A and the B are let out by
half a turn
and the D and the g are let out by a
full turn and you've kind of got a
polite radius or stagger that matches
the fingerboard do that on both pickups
and then do your height measurement now
looking at the height measurement for
the pickup we've actually got just a
very simple measurement we're going to
hold down the low E at the last fret
and then we're going to measure three
thirty seconds of an inch to the top of
the pole piece using that steel rule
like this where the measurements go down
to the bottom and we're going to set it
to 3 30 seconds on both pickups
we then repeat for the high e and again
three thirty seconds on both sides you
may need to go back to the other side
because obviously As you move one side
it does affect the height of the other
and you'll go back now to the to the low
E and you're going to just check that
it's 3 30 seconds so when you've got
both pickups set to that height again
with the strings held down at the last
fret you're going to end up with a neck
pickup which is lower and that is to
offset the fact that it's louder there
you may find that that works you may
find that it doesn't but I will say as
well as ours that is quite a common
height set in recommended by
manufacturers for their guitars I find
that it works I find that it's balanced
I hope you do too you should do the pole
piece adjustment before doing that
because it's going to affect and the
reason we got the pull pieces lower and
you can see in this guitar they started
off much higher it means that we're
bringing the coil into action so we're
bringing the whole pickup closer to the
strings not just the pole pieces and
that gives a little bit a really full
tone if you don't like the sound you can
tweak things I like to use the height
adjustment screws as a bit of a
reference if you look at where they are
you know maybe you're getting a little
bit too much bass so why not screw in
the base side adjustment by a quarter
turn play it play it for half an hour
see if you like it if you don't you can
easily undo it because you've observed
where the screws are and you can put it
back so there's lots of scope for
tweaking and I would just do little
repeatable also undoable tweaks if you
like so that you want a little bit less
treble then you screw in the travel side
adjustment by a quarter turn maybe a
half turn you don't like the sound you
can undo it and put the screw back to
where it was when he started that is my
recommendation for tweaking really your
instinct is usually to lower the pickup
if you want to affect the balance of the
tone let's say you're getting too much
bass then rather than raising the treble
you want to be looking to lower the base
side instead I have a little tweak but I
really feel that there's three thirty
seconds measurement for both pickups
gives it a great tone and it's a set and
forget tone in my book I like Saturn
forget because I'm a kind of guy you
know a bit of a geek who just wants to
go back oh I'm not sure that's quite the
right tone and I just there fiddling for
hours so having a measurement really
helps with that because it's set and
forget you put them there it sounds
great let's get on with playing and
enjoy it those are my height
recommendations I hope you find them
useful I said I would talk about dog ear
now
dog Year guys there's usually problems
when it comes to height setting you may
find that what whatever material is
underneath that pickup
facilitates you raising it up to the
right place
but you might find that your pickup is
too far away and that is very very
common don't raise the pole pieces to
get closer to the strings your instinct
is to raise the whole pickup so set the
pull pieces as I recommended for for
sober
and then look to raise the pickup to
where I've said to pull it if it won't
go up high enough you may have to look
at settling on where it is and maybe one
two three thirty seconds maybe you'll do
four thirty seconds that sort of thing
which is what
216s
um
I put some Metric stuff below as well
guys okay if you want to get it up
higher you're going to need some
material underneath the two screws which
is going to bring it up so there's lots
of things you can do you can cut out
tiny pieces of rubber tubing some people
sell spacers they're very expensive but
they're a kind of foam spacers they
would be ideal you need to get the
pickup up then you're going to need to
get something underneath good luck guys
because I tell you what I've never had a
P90 dog ear guitar but didn't need quite
a larger jiggery pokery to get in the
right place so you're going to need a
bit of luck there with it's much easier
with the soap bars I hope you found this
video useful if you have I'd love it if
you hit subscribe and also I would love
it too if you check out our Ranger P90s
as well because we've got a range there
which has been around for a long while
there's three general ones we do there's
the classic P90 which is just basically
aiming for that that classic Gibson tone
we also do the lapisola which is I'm
sure you can work out means the gun and
it's basically our nod to the late 70s
punk era it's a little bit more
supercharged a little bit more oomph and
it will really do that sort of I'll save
the queen and the Clash stuff as well so
that's we're big fans of the Clash in
the pistols so he's inspired by that and
we've also got the electric Spanish
which is voiced specifically for
semi-hollow and hollow body guitars so
yeah if you get a chance guys we'd love
it if you check out those if you've got
any questions about our pickups just
give us a shout see you in the next
