hey guys thanks for joining me if you
weren't aware September is National
preparedness month and ecoflow is
actually getting started just a little
bit early here in August with their
disaster preparedness awareness campaign
and while eof is not paying me to make
this video they did recently send me
this Delta 2 max power station review
unit which is one that I have not
reviewed before so I thought it might be
kind of fun during the course of this
review to maybe talk a bit about the
Delta 2 Max and similar kinds of
products in the context of disaster
preparedness now you can think of the
Delta 2 max is kind of a big brother to
the Delta 2 power station which I did
review a little over a year and a half
ago but this Max version actually has
double the battery capacity at 248 hours
and a rated continuous power output of
2400 Watts which is about 35% more power
than the Delta 2 is rated at which I
think is 1,800 Watts continuous output
and in the context of disaster
preparedness you know having any kind of
power backup solution is better than
nothing and of course having more
runtime and maybe more solar input
capacity in that solution is certainly
better than having less because that's
going to keep your fridge running longer
or keep your air conditioner or your
furnace running longer maybe at a time
when not having those things could
actually be more than just a mere
inconvenience certainly if you happen to
live in a hurricane Zone you no doubt
know this firsthand but even pretty far
from the coast we're seeing an increase
in the outbreak of things like severe
storms and tornadoes or snow and ice
storms or even wildfires for that matter
all of which can take out grid power for
many days at a time and when grid power
is down in a large area having a gas
generator can certainly be an affordable
and convenient solution but if you've
ever had to run out of fuel in that
particular circumstance you know it can
be extremely challenging if not
impossible to replenish your fuel supply
to keep a gas generator running and
that's a big reason why I think power
stations like this Delta 2 max can play
a crucial role in ensuring that you have
critical power in a widespread grid down
situation just put down some portable or
rigid solar panels and you can fairly
easily keep your critical loads powered
up for just about as long as you need
them and since power Stations don't emit
toxic fumes and loud noises like gas
generators do you can safely store and
operate these things from inside your
house which has the added benefit of
keeping them from being easy targets for
opportunistic thieves who do seem to
come out of the woodwork during natural
disasters we've all heard the news
stories so yeah I don't think there's
any question that having portable power
and solar resources handy in a natural
dis disaster situation is something that
everyone can benefit from but getting
back to this Delta 2 max let's briefly
jump back in time and see what this
thing comes with in the
Box got a cable box got a user
guide and there is the guy there let's
uh find out what's in the cable
box right we've got a car charging cable
so car to an XT 60i it's got got that
little uh communication pin on it but
other than that it's basically an xt60
connector one uh heavy gauge standard AC
cable and then this looks like a an
adapter cable to go from a
dc5521 to a
dc5525 so there's no uh solar Cable in
the Box I think they assume that you'll
get the solar cable when you buy their
solar panel so this does have an xt60
input on it the question is does it
require the XT 60i connector in order to
take solar input so we're going to find
that out in the course of testing okay
zooming in here on the front panel you
can see we've got all of our USB ports
here on the front panel uh we have four
type a USB ports two of them are the old
style 12 watt two of them are the newer
style Quick Charge uh 3.0 these are 18
watt ports and then you got a couple of
PD 100 watt ports now I'm starting to
see more and more power stations come
out with 140 watt ports um these are
still using the 100 Watts which is still
plenty sufficient to be able to charge
things like a Microsoft Surface laptop
or maybe a MacBook Pro and uh the newer
Tech is is 140 Watts but these will
still certainly get the job done all
right if I take a quick look here on the
side these are the two expansion ports
for up to two of the smart expansion
batteries that'll allow you to take this
from a
2,48 w solution up to uh a little over 6
Kow hours or 6,000 wat hours and then on
the back here is where all of the other
inputs and outputs under this little
door here and hopefully I can zoom in
there and give you a look at that we
have got two xt60 connectors and those
are uh maximum of 500 watts of solar
input each so uh they both have a
constraint of 11 volts up to 60 volts so
no more than 60 volts on either one of
these ports and I think they're capped
at 15 amps
and that's per Port so 15 amps per port
and you have two ports then you got your
AC charge port little breaker reset this
little button under here is where you
set the uh AC charge rate from Fast to
slow we'll get into the details on that
what that means a little bit more a
little bit later you've got six full
three prong 20 amp ports here which is
really nice and on the bottom here we
got a standard uh 10 amp 12vt car
accessory socket and then a couple of
dc5521 accessory ports here on the
bottom and that is about it okay let's
do an AC discharge capacity test on this
Delta 2 max as I said before it's rated
for 248 W hours I do have a 8,000 BTU
floor air conditioner here and it's
going to cycle on and off as the as the
day goes but I'm going to go ahead and
turn this on we're going to run this all
the way down and log the wat hours here
on this little meter now because the
ports are
uh for the AC output ports are on the
back I can't see the front of the
display I do know that I have it turned
on so let me go ahead and turn on the AC
inverter that should activate that we
can see that the uh air conditioner
responded accordingly so let me go ahead
and fire it
up and I've got it set to a pretty low
temperature so hopefully it will uh just
start
running and we're going to let this run
all the way
down we're going to start counting up
the wat hours as we go
so we'll check back when this thing is
fully depleted and find out how many
actual wat hours we can get out of that
AC inverter all right the air
conditioner has shut off and clearly
it's shut off unexpectedly from the air
conditioner perspective the Louver is
still in the up position but uh let me
get a uh external power here so we can
check the watt meter and find out how we
did all right we got
1,810 wat hours that's out of a r
2048 so that puts it at 88% of rated
which would be about 3 or 4% higher than
average so better than average numbers
on the AC usable capacity test out of
this Delta 2 max let's get this thing
charged up and uh do some more testing
all right let's do a solar charging test
on this now as I mentioned there are two
xt60 I connectors in the back of this
Delta 2 max and I want to find out if it
requires an X xt60 I connector so I've
got this homemade uh cable here with
just a standard xt60 on it now each Port
is able to handle 500 watts or up to 500
watts Max and that is 11 volts up to 60
volts with a 15 amp cap now I have over
paneled this by putting four 200 watt
panels in a 2s 2p configuration which
means I put two pairs of panels in
series and these are going to be about
20 volts each so that's about 40 volts
uh times 2 but I'm going to then connect
those two series pairs uh in parallel
using a couple of parallel Branch
connectors which is going to take their
normal uh short circuit current rating
of about 12 amps and double it so
instead of 80 volts I'm going to end up
with 40 volts and about 22 amps now I'm
going to get clipped on that no doubt
because there is a 500 watt Max and a 15
amp current draw Max so that means that
uh I'm I'm not going to be able to pull
the full 800 watts which is to be
expected now I am going to double check
to make sure that my voltage does not
exceed 60 volts it definitely should not
but I just kind of wanted to show you
this step because it is super important
that you not exceed the charge
controller's rated Max voltage so let me
just see if I can get that on screen
here it's currently turned off but I am
pulling in 38.6 volt I don't know if you
can make that out 38.6 Vols well under
the 60 volt Max so we are perfectly safe
even though I have a total of 800 watts
hooked up now let's just find out if
this thing is going to charge so the
first thing I'm going to do is plug it
in with this standard xt60 connector
I'll just pick the bottom one I don't
think it really matters since there are
two connectors back there and let's turn
it on and see if it'll take a
charge guess we can take this off huh
there we
go and it's detecting something there's
our input category on the top there
let's just see if the charge controller
picks anything up looks like it is so we
have pretty indirect sun right now it's
way off to the side because it's uh it's
early evening right now it's about 5:30
p.m. and we're getting about 371 Watts
which is which is about right so that
confirms it with me you do not have to
have a special XT xt60 I connector it
will charge off of a standard xt60
connector so that's cool so what I'm
going to do is uh I'm actually just
going to uh shut this off for now I'm
going to flip it back on once the sun
goes down because we are at zero st%
state of charge and I want to see if
this unit will resume charging on its
own without me having to unplug or
replug anything or wake it up or
anything like that so I'll I'll
reactivate the solar connection once
we're not getting any input from it and
then see if it wakes up on its own in
the morning so so I'll see you in the
[Music]
morning all right it is the next day
it's about 9:40 in the morning um got
some pretty decent Sun conditions right
now but they are definitely not in
anywhere close to being aligned with the
panels I do see the uh standby light
breathing here so we're doing
something and we are at 5% state of
charge coming up from zero this morning
and it did resume on its own we're
pulling in about 191 Watts which is uh
pretty fair given the alignment of the
sun right now and yeah so this thing
definitely did pass the unattended solar
charging test so let's find out if we
can dual charge with this or not let me
go ahead turn off the solar connection
for
now and as you recall we were getting
just under 200 Watts let me go ahead and
plug this
in and see how much power we are pulling
in right now
and let's see how much power you can
pull in right now via AC I did move the
switch to the fast charge position so
we'll give it just a second here and
we'll see where it uh where it jumps up
to and we are only at 5% state of charge
so I'm not sure if we're going to get
the full input or not looks like maybe
we will yeah so while without going in
and tinkering with the app we are
currently charging at uh let's see
1585 so 1,585
Watts via AC let's find out what happens
if we add some solar to this see if that
will jump by a couple hundred Watts or
not if it will it'll take a second as
the charge controller yeah and it is so
you can definitely dual charge AC and
solar with this guy the manual says that
you can uh dual charge up to 2400 Watts
if you max out the solar and the AC so
up to 2400 Watts we're actually fairly
close to that uh we're at 1790 so we're
only H call it 610 Watts shy of the max
but at this rate we're only at 7% Z of
charge and we should be fully charged in
about an hour so excellent fast charging
capability on this Delta 2 Max and dual
charge is confirmed all right ecoflow
does have a mobile app and you can see I
turned it on and it automatically uh
detected the unit so I'm going to go
ahead and click
add and I can set up the Wi-Fi now I
have terrible internet connection for
the time being out here in the barn but
it still did take the setup so that's
cool if you do want to see more detail
about the ecoflow mobile app um I'll
tell you go ahead and I'll put a link
down in the description below to the
original Delta 2 video where I go into a
lot more detail on the ecoflow app I
don't think I want to waste your time
here with that U but it does basically
do all the same things so I'm going to
go into uh into settings here and
basically all I did was set the uh
screen timeout here to 30 minutes so it
doesn't keep shutting off on me all
right so what I want to do right now is
I want to find out how noisy or not the
AC output uh Power is from this AC
inverter I'm going to use my old craty
guitar amp here to do that so there's no
noise supression uh technology in here
it is a it is a crappy old pawn shop
crate mini guitar amp so first of all
I'm going to plug it and by the way
notice the plug doesn't even have a
grounding pin somebody clipped it off
before I got my hands on it so I'm going
to plug it into grid power first and
we're going to get a baseline on what
this amp sounds like now I'm going to
turn this on with the microphone right
up to the front so you can hear what it
sounds like so this is on grid power
this is our Baseline
all right so pretty quiet a little bit
of a pop very slight hum nothing major
all right so let me plug this into the
back of the ecoflow and we'll turn it
back on and see if it is noisier than it
is on grid power all right got the AC
inverter on I've got the amp plugged in
the back let's run the same test and see
how it sounds here we go
okay you can definitely hear a
difference there is a little bit more
noise out of the AC inverter than there
is uh coming from my other actually my
other AC inverter it's technically not
grid power it's just a pretty clean
power source that I use for my Baseline
so a little bit more noise I would give
this a partial pass on the noise test um
it's not a problem for anything that
you're likely to do with it except if
you're going to use this as portable
power for a PA system or a guitar amp or
some kind of AIC music setup this might
be a little bit noisy for that and I say
partial pass because I've definitely
heard worse and uh but it does it does
introduce some noise into your amp so
just be aware of that U if you were
going to use this as a portable power
source for that kind of application or
maybe ham radio you might want a line
conditioner in there to help clean up
that uh output for your sensitive
Electronics so you don't get that
audible Buzz all right moving on all
right let's do some load testing on this
monster 24 400 W rated inverter I've
already checked it does output a full
120 volts which is nice I noticed that
when we did our capacity test and I used
my uh 8000 BTU air conditioner so it
does provide a full 120 volts and I've
already got it outputting 735 Watts
right now let's see if we can get this
fairly close to that 2400 watt maximum
continuous
rating so I've got some oil heaters here
and I am uh keeping those outside the
room because it's already fairly warm in
here can hear the fan starting to ramp
up fact let me go ahead and uh check the
sound
level all right at even nearly maximum
output here we are just let's see at
2229 so we're about 170 Watts shy of
Maximum this thing is only outputting 50
DB right now which is uh significantly
quieter than it's uh smaller sibling the
Delta 2 so the Delta 2 max is a fair
amount quieter at a much higher output
so I was getting somewhere in the
neighborhood of 60 to 63 DB on that
Delta 2 even when I was outputting
around 1,00 Watts so here we are
outputting a significantly more than
that at a significantly lower volume
level so that's a welcome Improvement
versus the Delta 2 all right let's see
what happens if I add another couple
hundred Watts this is probably going to
briefly put us over the 2400 and then it
may settle us back down yeah so we're
right at that threshold so let's just
let that run for a while and make sure
that that will run for at least 25% of
its overall uh charge capacity and make
sure that um that it can sustain that
without shutting us
[Music]
down as you can see we're getting 19.6
volts even at 2400 Watts or
2394 all right according to my watch it
has been 10 full minutes we run it down
to 72% and the whole time we've been
right at that 2400 watt continuous rated
output so definitely passes the AC
inverter load test so let me go ahead
and try to to to push this a little past
400 watts I'm kind of curious what we
can get away with so we're kind of we're
going to keep our eye on that there I'm
going to turn this down so I can add
some additional Watts from the uh the
other oil heater I have outside now I
have X boost turned off and we'll kind
of see what the difference of that is so
X boost will pretty much keep it right
around 2400 Watts but it'll reduce the
voltage and that's that's handy at times
if you're running lights and heaters uh
maybe not so handy if you happen to be
trying to power televisions computers or
other sensitive Electronics potentially
so we're currently just below 2200 Watts
let's add probably another 5 or 600
watts and see what it does all right we
should see that Spike up look like we're
stuck at
2409 honestly it's acting like X boost
is
on and we can verify that let's just see
whether or not voltage has been
throttled and in fact it has so X boost
must actually be on so that's what x
boost does it dro the voltage to 110 in
order to keep the overall power output
below the overload
threshold and like I said that is not
necessarily something you want to do for
sensitive Electronics but it's okay for
things like heaters so let me go ahead
and take the uh the power demand back
down and I'm sure if I checked voltage
again it would read 120 again we're back
down to
2197 let me actually go into the app and
just a show you where that is normally I
do a screen record on this to make it
easier but X boost is down here and it
doesn't show on right
now okay that time I got the beep
confirmation that I turned X boost off
so we are back up to 2214 let me add
some load and see what it
does and we are at
2867 definitely going to shut us off at
some point let's just see what it lets
us get away
with all right so basically we got away
with 2800 and call it 50 Watts so about
450 Watts it was actually a little bit
more than that over that rated 2400 watt
continuous for a full 60 seconds before
the overload shutdown uh kicked in and
uh shut us down all right so uh load
test on this AC inverter absolutely
passes spec it performs exactly as it
should okay now that we've seen how the
Delta 2 max actually performs let's talk
about how you could use this as part of
your disaster preparedness plan
obviously just all by itself you could
simply plug in your fridge or freezer or
whatever your window air conditioner
directly into the back of the unit and
its portability and its 2,000 W hours of
capacity certainly make it a great
solution for that but since the Delta 2
max actually gives you the capability to
add up to two of their smart expansion
battery modules and each one of those
adds an additional 248 WS that gives you
the ability to expand up to a maximum of
6,144 w hours and that's pretty cool
because that gives you the ability to
maybe start with the base unit the max
the Delta 2 Max and then add battery
capacity as your needs and as your
budget you know allows you to and then
once you start getting into that 6,000
wat hour and up capacity range you can
now start doing a lot of other things
that you probably can't practically do
all that easily or all that functionally
uh at lower capacities and and that's
connecting this solution to a manual
transfer switch like this now this
happens to be a 30 amp manual transfer
switch for something like the Delta 2
max because of the inverter size I would
probably recommend a 20 amp manual
transfer switch but the idea is
basically the same it allows you to
manually transfer selected circuits from
your house from your main circuit panel
to the uh manual transfer switch where
you can then connect either a a gas
generator or a Battery Solution like the
Delta 2 max straight up there and power
those circuits from there instead of
having to drag uh extension cables all
around the house and things like that so
it allows you to power multiple things
and a really good use case for that
would be your gas furnace in the winter
time because gas furnaces don't actually
use all that much electricity they use
maybe when the blower is running
somewhere around 600 or 700 Watts
continuous but just when that blower is
operational so it's a very valid use
case for a setup like this and any
licensed electrician can install one of
these very easily so easily in fact that
you could actually do this yourself if
you have just a basic understanding of
common household wiring and you're able
to exercise uh some common sense safety
precautions but if that is something
that is out of your comfort zone uh or
your experience level you definitely
should have an license electrician do it
for you I've installed three of these
now I've actually done a video on that
and I'll put that down in the uh video
description below I'll put a link to
that if you want to watch it so you can
see how easy it actually is and decide
for yourself if that's something you'd
be comfortable tackling so yeah this
Delta 2 Max can definitely serve as a
starter home power backup system that
doubles as a convenient portable power
solution for rving or camping or
whatever but I would say that if you're
looking for more of a dedicated home
power backup solution ecoflow does have
a couple of other options that as you
might expect do cost a fair bit more
than this Delta 2 max but that would
probably be a much better fit for that
kind of use case while offering quite a
bit more overall capacity expansion and
two of the options that come to mind are
the Fairly New Delta Pro Ultra and the
very just freshly released Delta Pro 3
both of these would be very capable
power backup Solutions and if that's the
route that you're seriously considering
going I'll leave links to those systems
in the video description below along
with some discount information for you
uh so you can go check them out on your
own if you want to okay so to wrap up
there really is no better time to start
making sure that you're prepared for a
multi-day grid down situation than right
now because let's face it if you're not
already prepared when things hit the fan
it's kind of already too late and I do
think this Delta 2 max is a great option
to get started with because it has a
significant amount of capacity right out
of the box and as your needs change it
can grow with you so hey if you found
anything in the video helpful or
informative at all please help me out
and click that like button for me I'd
very much appreciate that and uh maybe
consider subscribing to the channel if
you're not already a subscriber I do
thank you for watching this video with
me and I hope you'll consider joining me
for the next one until then stay safe
out there
