However, before we begin I want you to get pen and paper because I want you to jot down the information that I will be discussing. And I hope that you can use it in your critique paper.

On my previous video, we differentiated critique paper and reaction paper. To refresh your mind

Before I teach you tips in writing effective critique paper. Remember to choose a topic that you are interested at.

For instance your teacher instructed you to write a critique paper towards an article, you should choose a topic that you want to discuss, and to evaluate

Because this will give you the motivation to read and write your paper but if you have no idea in mind on what to write think about dilemmas, questions and personal theories about events

As a way in reducing the ambiguity or the uncertainty. Where in by writing a critique paper you get to understand a topic or concept better.

Critique paper has three parts, Introduction, body and conclusion

Now, what should we include in our introduction, body and conclusion?

In the introduction, you have to write the work and the name of the author/writer. if its possible you should also include the date of its publication.

But why? what is the reason of putting the publication date and the name of its author? this will help your reader or someone who will evaluate your paper identify whose work, article, book, or movie etc. are you critiquing.

That's why it is essential to know the writer of the article or movie that you are critiquing.

Because you will use those information throughout your paper, specifically on the body part

it is also significant tow write and describe the main argument in the introduction. for instance you read a theory, an article, journal. What is the main point , bottom line explained in that work

The next that you have to do is to write the purpose of that article or paper. Why did they publish that paper, what is the purpose of that theory, movie, journal etc.

Did they publish that to spread consciousness, awareness, to describe, explain, to distinguish etc.

Therefore, the purpose of that article or book should be clear to you because it is where you will establish your evaluation.

wherein you will critique if the paper or movie was able to serve and meet its goal/purpose?

Another important thing to write in the introduction is you should be able to write and explain the context of the work

What is the condition or atmosphere of that work? is it in the context of history, sociology, economy, politics and so forth? so you need to know in what condition or aspect the work is circulating and discussing.

But but is the need in identifying the context of the work under study?

Context is not only a background or backdrop for you to understand the main point of the work,

This serve as a platform to stage and express ideas, actions and concepts.

And through the context you will have better understanding and effective interpretation of the work

For example, the movie General Luna. What is the context of the movie? What is the plot of the movie?

It is about history right. Now since the context is history as a critique you have to identify its historicity or what we call historical actuality of the things, information shown in that movie

How is the portrayal in the movie? the actions as well as the dialogue? are they based on fiction or inspired by real events?

The last part of the introduction that you have to write is a short summary of the goal of the writer or the work under critique and its main point

Thus, it is a short summary so it should be brief

It is important to include the summary so that your teacher or your reader no longer need to read the article or watch the full movie to know the work that you are critiquing

what about the body of your critique paper? what should we write?

Here we are going to write a detailed and systematic assessment of the work

You do not need critique the whole work, What I suggest is focus on a specific detail/parts of the work, wherein you will exert all your effort to come up with a sensible, precise, and critical assessment.

For example in the movie General Luna, you can focus your evaluation on the dialogue

You will evaluate if the dialogue or lines were effective in the portrayal of the real events. Was it effective in waking Filipino nationalism? With it you will understand and assess the significance of dialogues in historical movies

What about article and /or theory how should we critique it?

here you will present the evidences as well as persuasion used in the work

Was the writer able to properly interpret the evidences , facts in the article or in that theory?

what about the structure and its flow?

or what we call perspective?

was the perspective used in that work represent the point of view of an insider or an outsider to the subject being assess?

To give you a better picture, allow me to cite El Cano and Magellan the movie. This cartoon film was produced in Spain

When the movie was released in different countries some Filipino critics what to hamper or ban its showing here in the Philippines.

According to the news, critics pointed that the movie is not accurate in depicting what truly transpired during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines.

for the critics, the movie made Lapu-Lapu villain

As a critic you have to remember that the movie El Cano and Magellan was made by Spanish, naturally they will present what they think is correct or their point of view on what happened during Magellan's navigation

Since Lapu-Lapu defeated Magellan they presented him as villain because he hampered the expansion of Spanish colony in the Philippines

If we revisit our movies about Spanish colonization we also presented Magellan as villain right?

Being able to see the perspective used in the work, you can be able to identify biases, lapses and personal biases of the writer.

Explain your personal observation, where are you coming from in writing your point of view about your critique paper

For instance you are going to write a critique paper about a picture. In the picture there are volunteers giving relief goods to the people affected by the flood in Cagayan and Isabela

The context is about sociology because by looking at the pciture you will see the concept of "bayanihan"- Filipino concept of helping one another without expecting money or payment in return

For example we will write in the picture it is evident that bayanihan still is in the heart and action of Filipinos

Now what theoretical or conceptual points are we going to use to enhance our argument or point?

We can use the school of thought of Virgilio Enriquez "Sikolohiyang Pilipino" but what is this?

With Sikolohiyang Pilipino we can illustrate that Filipinos amidst calamities, social problems, and poverty Filipinos still manage to help and support each other

You can enrich your point by adding concepts related to sikolohiyang pilipino like Kapwa (us ) and Pakikipag-kapwa (creating relationship and connection with others)

With kapwa and pakikipag-kapwa (both concept of Sikolohiyang Pilipino) it will serve as your basisi in saying that bayanihan still exist in Filipino hearts and action.

And last but not least, what should we write in our conclusion?

it should be brief, write your key evaluation and how did you come up with that assessment
