Q & A
What is the points test for general skilled migration visas in Australia?
-The points test is used to assess eligibility for general skilled migration visas, such as the 189, 190, and 491 visas. It calculates points based on factors like age, English proficiency, skilled work experience, qualifications, and other criteria.
What are the minimum points required to apply for a 190 or 491 visa?
-For a 190 or 491 visa, the minimum points required are 65. However, additional criteria such as studying or working in a regional area or having certain work experience can influence the application.
How are points awarded for age in the skilled migration points test?
-Points are awarded for age based on the applicant's age at the time of invitation. For example, applicants aged 25 to 32 receive 30 points, while those aged 33 to 39 get 25 points. Applicants aged 45 or older are not eligible.
How is English proficiency measured in the points test?
-English proficiency is measured by tests like IELTS and PTE. Competent English (IELTS 6 or PTE 50) does not earn points, while proficient English (IELTS 7 or PTE 65) earns 10 points, and superior English (IELTS 8 or PTE 79) earns 20 points.
What are the maximum points an applicant can receive for overseas and Australian work experience?
-The maximum points an applicant can receive for combined overseas and Australian work experience is 20 points. Applicants can earn 5 points for at least three years of overseas experience and up to 15 points for eight or more years of experience.

-Points for qualifications vary: a diploma or trade qualification earns 10 points, a bachelor’s degree earns 15 points, and a doctorate degree earns 20 points. Additional points are awarded for Australian study and specialist education.
What additional points can be awarded for regional study and specialist education?
-Applicants can receive 5 points for completing two years of full-time study in regional Australia and an additional 10 points for completing a PhD or master's degree in a STEM field at an Australian institution.
How can partner qualifications affect an applicant’s points?
-If an applicant is single, they receive 10 points. A partner with competent English and a positive skills assessment can also earn the applicant 10 points. If the partner has competent English but no relevant skills assessment, 5 points are awarded.
What is the professional year and how does it impact points?
-A professional year is a structured program related to an applicant’s occupation, typically lasting 12 months. Completing a professional year in accounting, IT, or engineering in the last 48 months can add 5 points.

not be given any partner points for the

eligible for five points for a
professional year if the program is

Engineering so with we've gone through
the basic points now let's look at a
case scenario Ben is turning 25 on the
20th of September 2022 he is holding a
bachelor's degree in marketing 3 years
full-time course from a University of
South Australia Ben has never worked
outside of Australia in marketing but
has two years in Australia as a
marketing specialist he has not
completed any credential language test
or professional year he has a partner
who got proficient English and a
positive skills assessment in ICT
support engineer Ben also has a
proficient English language test result
so how many points does Ben have if he
lodges an expression of Interest now for
a 190 or a
491 firstly 30 points for age because
he's just turned 25 years old he has
proficient English so he gets 10 points
for that he's completed a bachelor's
degree in South Australia Australia so
that would be 15 points for the bachelor
degree and five points for Australian
study and five points for studying in a
regional area the skilled employment
Factor gives Ben another five points his
partner will further boost his points to
a total of 10 points nomination for a
190 would give him five points while
nomination for a 491 would give him 15
points in total Ben will be able to
claim 85 points for a 190 or 95 points
for a
491 so that's the end of today's video
