The Cayman GT4 was an instant success, setting high expectations for its successor. However, the narrator feels that Porsche made some mistakes with the 718 Cayman GT4, which has led to it being somewhat forgotten despite its potential. The narrator has not driven the 718 GT4 but has experience with closely related models, and is now given the opportunity to drive and review the 718 GT4. The script then delves into the history of the Cayman, explaining its mid-engine design and how it was initially held back in terms of power to not outshine the 911. The Cayman GT4 was a breakthrough, using a detuned Carrera S engine and 911 GT3 components, making it a sharp and fast car.

05:01

🚀 The Rise and Speculation of the Cayman GT4

Paragraph 2 discusses the market frenzy that surrounded the original Cayman GT4, with people willing to pay well over the list price due to its limited production run. The discontinuation of the 981 model and the introduction of the 718 with its turbocharged four-cylinder engines led to controversy and unfavorable comparisons. The announcement of a second GT4 model surprised everyone as Porsche developed a new 4-liter engine for it, which was a significant departure from previous models. The narrator praises the new engine for its power and torque, and the car's overall performance. The script also touches on the car's design, comparing it favorably to its predecessors and highlighting its road racer vibe. play00:22

hello everybody I don't know about you

play00:25

but I remember the launch of the

play00:26

original 981 generation Porsche Cayman

play00:29

GT4 very vividly this was a big deal

play00:33

because at long last the company

play00:36

relented and built the car that we all

play00:38

wanted them to but they always said they

play00:41

were never going to finally here was a

play00:44

Cayman given its full potential and that

play00:47

car was an instant hit so naturally

play00:52

expectations for its successor were Sky

play00:55

High yet a few things happened that have

play00:59

meant that even now only shortly after

play01:02

that car has been discontinued it feels

play01:04

like it's already been somewhat

play01:06

forgotten and I think Porsche made a few

play01:10

fundamental errors with the 718 Cayman

play01:13

GT4 but I can't really damn the thing if

play01:17

I haven't driven it and though I've

play01:19

driven many of the cars very close to it

play01:22

including the 718 spider effectively the

play01:25

convertible version of the same thing

play01:27

and the mighty 718 G GT4 RS I haven't

play01:32

yet actually sampled the 718 GT4 full

play01:38

stop today courtesy of a lovely chap

play01:41

called Jim I am finally able to write

play01:43

that wrong I'm going to be driving this

play01:45

car telling you what it's like and also

play01:48

explaining just how I think Porsche got

play01:50

it quite so badly wrong

play01:58

[Music]

play02:11

to understand what it is that happened

play02:13

we must first understand what a Cayman

play02:15

GT4 is I am fairly confident you're

play02:18

already familiar with the Cayman

play02:20

Porsche's mid-engined entry-level sports

play02:23

car the hard top version of the boxer

play02:26

which we've had in some shape or form

play02:27

since 1997

play02:30

the Cayman then joined the boxer for its

play02:32

second generation arriving in the middle

play02:34

of the 2000s it was like the Boxster

play02:37

before it another instant hit because it

play02:39

gave people much of what they loved

play02:41

about the Porsche brand handsome if

play02:43

perhaps not beautiful styling though I

play02:45

have always had a bit of a thing for the

play02:47

first generation Cayman you had that

play02:50

classic Flat 6 engine but unlike the 911

play02:54

which is famously rear engined this like

play02:56

the boxer was mid-engined so just about

play02:59

any any and every journalist that drove

play03:01

it said that actually when it came down

play03:04

to it this was a better balanced car and

play03:07

maybe a more enjoyable Drive than its

play03:10

iconic older brother it is then possibly

play03:13

because of this very fact that Porsche

play03:15

were always a little bit weary of giving

play03:17

it anything more than modest amounts of

play03:20

power so at any and all points during

play03:22

the cayman's life it felt like it was

play03:24

being deliberately held back because

play03:27

everybody knew if it had the same power

play03:29

as a 911 it would easily outperform

play03:37

it which is why then when Porsche

play03:39

finally did relent and build the car

play03:41

we'd all been waiting for the Cayman GT4

play03:44

it was such a big deal it took them

play03:47

until 2015 to do it by which time the

play03:50

car was in its Third Generation Well

play03:53

third for the Boxster anyway the one

play03:55

dubbed 981 and the formula was fairly

play03:59

simple they took the already brilliant

play04:01

Cayman they gave it a detuned version of

play04:04

the Carrera s's engine making just shy

play04:07

of 400 horsepower and they took

play04:09

effectively the front end of a 911 GT3

play04:13

so it received a radically different

play04:15

setup for the suspension the brakes and

play04:18

various other components giving you all

play04:20

around a sharper Tarter and faster car

play04:24

it was brilliant

play04:26

[Music]

play04:34

but unfortunately or fortunately

play04:36

depending on your perspective everybody

play04:39

knew that and because circumstances at

play04:42

the time conspired to produce a perfect

play04:44

storm the Cayman GT4 became one of the

play04:48

Prime examples of a Porsche where people

play04:51

went mad for them and were desperate to

play04:53

pay overs for what previously would have

play04:55

been a relatively ordinary car very

play04:58

quickly vehicles that carried a list

play05:00

price of some £85 to 90,000 people began

play05:04

asking 100 105 £5 130 I even saw a few

play05:10

advertised for over

play05:13

£50,000

play05:14

and the GT4 I certainly don't think

play05:17

created this scenario because it really

play05:19

had been brewing in the Porsche world

play05:21

for quite some time but it was certainly

play05:23

one of the first cars I remember seeing

play05:25

and being annoyed about it because had

play05:27

that not happened I might

play05:30

have been able to afford one and I think

play05:32

one of the reasons that it was for such

play05:34

a long time such a sought-after car is

play05:36

because it was relatively limited never

play05:39

to specific numbers or anything like

play05:41

that but the simple fact is they didn't

play05:43

build it for all that long the car was

play05:45

in production for just over a year until

play05:48

the 981 as a whole was discontinued

play05:51

being replaced by the 718 and when that

play05:54

happened Porsche got really

play05:56

controversial because out went the

play05:59

iconic naturally aspirated Flat 6 and

play06:01

Inc came a series of still flat but now

play06:04

four cylinder turbo engines Q lots of

play06:08

unfavorable comparisons with Subarus and

play06:11

though sure the cars did bring with them

play06:13

inevitable improvements in both pace and

play06:16

economy this wasn't the engine that

play06:18

people had fallen in love with so when

play06:20

it was invariably announced that there

play06:22

was going to be a second GT4 people got

play06:25

asking what engine are they going to put

play06:28

in it the answer actually shocked

play06:31

everybody because Porsche went and built

play06:33

a whole new lump seemingly just for this

play06:37

it displaces 4 L it makes 420 horsepower

play06:42

310 lb feet of torque that's 420 Newton

play06:45

met and it is actually a heavy reworking

play06:49

of the 3 l twin turbo that you would

play06:52

have found in a careera but here

play06:54

stripped of its forced induction and we

play06:56

were all shocked because that made it

play06:59

very apparent the Porsche were taking

play07:01

this car really rather

play07:22

seriously okay it's still not a true GT

play07:25

engine for that we had to wait until the

play07:27

GT4 RS when they finally stuck that

play07:31

manic 500 horsepower lump into a Cayman

play07:35

and I have driven that car and to be

play07:37

honest with you I have a LoveHate

play07:39

relationship with that engine because

play07:41

when it's on song it is utterly and

play07:44

totally beguiling the rest of the time

play07:47

it's just frustrating on the road I

play07:50

think this is far better pulls hard from

play07:53

low down I mean I'm in fifth gear at

play07:56

2,000 RPM but you put your boot in and

play07:58

it resp bonds makes a darn good noise

play08:01

too even though these cars naturally

play08:03

were never going to be as rockers as

play08:05

their forbears on account of the fact

play08:07

that they had to meet ever tightening

play08:08

emissions RS so they were quieter fitted

play08:11

with particulate filters and the like it

play08:14

still sounds pretty darn good sure you

play08:16

won't hear it from a mile away but when

play08:19

it goes past you know it's something

play08:21

special and in here though I've no doubt

play08:23

there's a little bit of assistance still

play08:26

makes a good sound the car overall also

play08:29

still has all of the Hallmarks that made

play08:31

any and every Cayman brilliant first off

play08:34

it's a good looking thing this

play08:36

generation of GT4 is sharpened compared

play08:39

with the outgoing one a little more

play08:40

aggressive in the Aero department but

play08:43

still not dared for my money it gives

play08:45

you the exact right amount of road racer

play08:48

Vibes I love it that rear wing in fact

play08:52

even gives me hints of 996

play08:56

GT2 and it just so happens that this

play08:58

afternoon I am driving a 996 GT2 but I

play09:02

wager across country this is probably

play09:06

the faster car curiously it's not

play09:09

actually anywhere near as light as it's

play09:11

forbear this Allin depending on

play09:13

specification weighs around

play09:16

1,470 kilos and the older 981 again

play09:20

depending on specification could have

play09:22

been anywhere up to about 100 kilos

play09:26

lighter still you wouldn't call it a shy

play09:28

performance this and this particular

play09:31

example I think is a very very

play09:33

interesting one that Jim has brought me

play09:35

he has previously had a couple of boxers

play09:37

and found himself wanting something a

play09:39

little more special this was at a

play09:41

dealership local to him and he'd been

play09:43

eyeing it up for quite some time he'd

play09:46

always fancied the idea of a Cayman GT4

play09:49

specifically wanted one with a manual

play09:52

one big difference between this and the

play09:53

981 is that later during the model's

play09:56

life they did introduce pdk for this but

play09:58

of course the Driver's Choice is always

play10:00

going to be the manual and it's a

play10:02

wonderful box nice short throw beautiful

play10:05

action you can rev match heel and toe

play10:08

it's all set up absolutely perfectly as

play10:12

you would expect in any Porsche and what

play10:14

Drew him to this car particularly wasn't

play10:16

just the fact it's a gorgeous Cayman GT4

play10:19

in guards red but the fact that it was a

play10:21

2 and 1/2 yearold car with just 1,500 M

play10:26

on the clock today it has just over

play10:30

122,000 so I can't say that he hasn't

play10:32

enjoyed it but he has still kept it in a

play10:35

very very good nick it's not a car that

play10:38

really appears to have much at all in

play10:40

the way of options there's no extended

play10:42

leather there's no bucket seats or

play10:45

anything like that but actually in a lot

play10:47

of ways this car demonstrates that you

play10:50

don't necessarily need all of

play10:56

that I seem to recall that these seats

play10:59

maybe a bit like in the gt3s though they

play11:01

are the Comfort option they still aren't

play11:03

what you might term regular Comfort

play11:05

Seats they're quite nicely sculpted and

play11:07

actually do an excellent job of holding

play11:09

you in place how's the Turning Circle

play11:12

because I'm sure you're all Keen to know

play11:13

about that it's it's pretty good yeah

play11:16

[Music]

play11:22

[Music]

play11:29

in typical Porsche fashion the thing is

play11:31

ludicrously long geared so even in

play11:33

second you can break the national speed

play11:35

limit on a Motorway and that's a bit of

play11:37

a shame really now the truth is that

play11:40

when you drive it it doesn't feel like

play11:42

it is overly long geared simply because

play11:44

it can pull from Sol low down and I

play11:47

expect part of the reason for this was

play11:48

to try and make sure that the car would

play11:50

perform well on circuit specifically a

play11:54

very well-known and rather long one in

play11:56

the Northwestern part of Germany it is

play11:59

also also in situations like this where

play12:00

some of the other regular Cayman traits

play12:02

shine through it is still a fairly

play12:04

narrow car you've got excellent

play12:06

visibility out of the front those

play12:08

wonderfully sharp hunches are absolutely

play12:11

beautiful to look at and also help you

play12:13

place the car well between them up at

play12:15

the front you'll also find a generously

play12:17

sized Boot and of course as is came in

play12:19

and boxer tradition you've also got

play12:21

another one at the back meaning if you

play12:23

want to do a nice CrossCountry Journey

play12:26

this is an excellent companion around

play12:29

town like its GT3 cousins the ride is on

play12:31

the firm side though it hasn't thus far

play12:34

ever been crashy but it is a little

play12:36

harder than you might like it to be I

play12:39

recall going out in the 718 spider and

play12:41

feeling that was a car that was very

play12:43

much on the edge of what I would ter

play12:45

acceptable for a road car you could

play12:48

naturally have these cars optioned in

play12:50

all sorts of different ways and though I

play12:51

would say that if you put the bucket

play12:53

seats in the extended leather maybe the

play12:56

carbon Ceramics the car would look and

play12:58

feel a little more special even as we

play13:00

have it here it is a wonderful thing and

play13:04

doesn't really feel like it falls short

play13:06

in any particular way the brakes for

play13:08

example though sure yeah the Ceramics

play13:10

would ultimately be better these are

play13:13

still excellent I also love the

play13:16

beautiful Simplicity of this interior

play13:18

for me it is Miles better than that you

play13:21

would find in the current day 992

play13:23

generation 911 you've got a screen over

play13:26

here which all right by today's

play13:27

standards is beginning to look a little

play13:29

quaint on account of how small it is but

play13:31

it gives you most of what you would want

play13:34

with the exception of Android auto you

play13:37

do though still have physical controls

play13:39

for your HVAC which is nice and up front

play13:41

you've got a trio of gauges two of which

play13:44

are analog for your speed and your revs

play13:47

and then on the right a customizable one

play13:49

giving you all sorts of different

play13:51

information got your audio settings your

play13:53

mobile phone things trip computer tire

play13:56

pressures etc etc etc and so like its

play14:00

predecessor this car has all of the

play14:03

things it needs to be an absolutely

play14:06

excellent Road car but is it time to put

play14:11

it through my favorite little bit of B-

play14:13

Road and I'll report back in about 30

play14:15

seconds time

play14:37

[Music]

play14:46

yep no other way of saying it this car

play14:50

is

play14:51

fabulous I love it and you know what

play14:54

it's really reminding me of that first

play14:57

generation 996 GT3 that I drove this

play15:00

actually has a fair bit more punch but

play15:03

it's an engine that you can drive either

play15:05

off of the torque or using the revs and

play15:08

the top end power and both ways it

play15:11

delivers it is also a car where you can

play15:13

simply cruise but use the steering the

play15:16

handling and the wonderfully

play15:18

communicative chassis to just guide you

play15:20

through the bins if it has a weakness it

play15:23

is the steering and it's not bad but

play15:26

this electrically assisted rack well

play15:28

it's just not as good as those of old

play15:31

but if I'm being fair to it it is still

play15:33

better than a great many others I've

play15:34

driven including in things that cost a

play15:36

lot more that should really be even

play15:39

better and at no point have I been in

play15:41

any doubt whatsoever as to the car's

play15:44

capabilities again like in that GT3 it's

play15:47

not a hyper sensitive rack but the

play15:49

steering does have a nice waiting about

play15:51

it it moves in your hand a fair amount

play15:54

and it really does communicate to you

play15:57

okay not as vividly as before but it

play16:00

still does it and the joy of this is

play16:02

it's giving me all of the sensations

play16:05

that the 992 GT3 doesn't that is

play16:09

ludicrously devastatingly fast it's an

play16:12

incredible car but to try and get the

play16:15

most of it you have to be doing a speed

play16:17

that is simply put

play16:20

irresponsible this you can have plenty

play16:22

of fun in without really even having to

play16:24

bother the speed limit I love it one of

play16:28

my few complaints really is that with

play16:30

that long gearing I just don't get to

play16:32

hear the engine at the top end of its

play16:34

rev range anywhere near enough and in

play16:36

the practicality and the packaging of

play16:39

any and every Cayman that Porsche

play16:41

reliability and really you've got a

play16:44

winner here so why is it that I started

play16:47

this video by doing a bit of complaining

play16:49

and saying that Porsche really cocked it

play16:51

up well that's because it wasn't Porsche

play16:55

that got the car wrong it wasn't Andreas

play16:57

Pinger who made made a mistake instead

play17:00

it was the Porsche dealers because you

play17:03

remember I said that that first

play17:05

generation GT4 that was a reasonably

play17:08

limited car and people went a bit mad

play17:10

with it well as soon as this one was

play17:12

announced everybody thought that the

play17:14

same thing was going to happen and so

play17:17

you knew full well that a lot of the

play17:19

people putting their orders in early and

play17:22

more importantly those getting them were

play17:24

the ones that were particularly buddy

play17:26

buddy with their dealer and ones that

play17:28

had come to an Arrangement meaning that

play17:29

they were going to get preferential

play17:31

treatment these were the people that

play17:33

then listed their nice new Cayman GT4

play17:36

they said they really wanted with 100

play17:38

miles on the clock and that to me is not

play17:46

right but you see for those people

play17:49

things didn't go so well because this

play17:52

car wasn't in production for a year this

play17:54

car was in production for nearly four

play17:57

and though in that time there were some

play17:59

fairly troubling years which in a lot of

play18:01

ways did something to help keep prices

play18:03

buoyant the fact is this is a far far

play18:07

more common car the original 981 GT4

play18:10

today on AutoTrader there are 30

play18:13

examples for sale but of this generation

play18:16

there are

play18:17

34 GT4

play18:20

RS this one the plain old 718 GT4

play18:24

they're a 90 for sale and it became very

play18:28

clear predict ularly in sort of 2023 as

play18:30

the model was coming to its end and

play18:33

certain situations were sorting

play18:34

themselves out that if you actually

play18:36

wanted to buy one of these you could

play18:38

have simply walked into your dealer

play18:40

ordered it and got it and I do feel a

play18:43

bit of grieved about that because had in

play18:46

the early days Porsche said you know

play18:47

what if you want to game in GT4 you can

play18:49

have one everyone can have one but it's

play18:51

going to be about 2 years the

play18:53

speculators wouldn't have been

play18:55

interested instead all of the people

play18:57

that actually want to drive one would

play18:59

have been able to have afforded one at

play19:02

list price and because we didn't think

play19:05

that ever was going to be a possibility

play19:06

we went off and bought other things the

play19:09

Lotus at miror I think managed to

play19:11

collect quite a few people that were

play19:12

originally going to buy a Cayman GT4 and

play19:15

this really to me is a masterclass in

play19:18

mismanagement of customer expectations I

play19:21

think the Porsche dealers knew full well

play19:23

just how many of these were going to be

play19:25

but as long as customers didn't realize

play19:28

how common they were were going to be

play19:30

then they didn't know that they didn't

play19:32

have to play the silly game that they've

play19:34

been doing for a few years it's really

play19:37

really rather unfortunate and I think a

play19:39

similar thing perhaps to an even more

play19:41

extreme extent has happened with the GT4

play19:43

RS I've heard rumors that over the last

play19:46

few months if you'd actually wanted an

play19:48

RS you basically could have had one but

play19:50

in the early days people were asking a

play19:53

quarter of a million for £ 150,000 car

play19:57

and that's just grief

play20:05

and though I'm not so naive to think

play20:07

that the world will ever be without

play20:08

greed to me the whole point of a Porsche

play20:12

has always been that it's the car that

play20:13

unlike a Ferrari you can simply just

play20:15

walk into a dealer pay your money for

play20:17

get and enjoy you shouldn't have to run

play20:20

around in circles jump through hoops or

play20:23

do anything else to get one and as it

play20:25

turns out you didn't but because we

play20:27

believed you did people didn't bother

play20:30

but there is a good side to this you see

play20:33

because where the early came in GT4 Now

play20:36

commands at its lowest say £55 to

play20:39

60,000 these begin at just about 65 to

play20:43

70,000 granted they will be for lower

play20:46

specification cars or ones with higher

play20:48

mileage on but just about any and every

play20:52

718 GT4 is going to be a very very good

play20:56

car and at that money I would have

play20:59

really really struggled to think of an

play21:01

alternative Jim is considering moving

play21:04

this on he's thinking of moving into an

play21:05

airor because to his eyes it is the far

play21:08

prettier car it's also rarer more

play21:10

interesting a little bit special and he

play21:12

likes that sort of thing and though I've

play21:15

said to him look it's a very very good

play21:16

car the miror I think it's a bit of a

play21:18

sideways move and I've been trying to

play21:20

think of what may be to suggest to him

play21:22

instead but I'm coming up a little bit

play21:24

short I said about maybe an Aston Martin

play21:27

but that doesn't appeal to him an older

play21:29

Ferrari really compared to one of these

play21:31

is going to be a gamble to run this

play21:34

haager wouldn't really cause much grief

play21:36

at all for its owner this one's given

play21:37

him a couple of small issues but they've

play21:39

all been sorted by the dealer and under

play21:41

warranty so that's not a

play21:43

concern and the only other thing I can

play21:45

really think of as a suggestion is an

play21:47

old first generation Audi R8 V10 because

play21:52

there he can have his well not sports

play21:54

but Supercar with a manual and an even

play21:58

mighty engine as this is a high days and

play22:01

holidays thing for him but he tries to

play22:03

have as many high days and holidays as

play22:05

he can I think that's a car that might

play22:08

manage to achieve that feeling of being

play22:10

even more special and as he doesn't need

play22:13

the practicality this offers the

play22:15

compromised storage of an R8 isn't going

play22:17

to be as much of an issue but I tell you

play22:20

something if for a little while now

play22:22

you've been looking at Old 911 gt3s 996s

play22:26

997s and the like or even maybe newer

play22:29

911 GTS Carrera S that sort of thing and

play22:34

you haven't considered one of these you

play22:37

really really should because though it

play22:41

may have been the victim of a lot of Tom

play22:43

Foolery at certain dealers there isn't

play22:46

really anything that can take away from

play22:48

it just how fundamentally brilliant the

play22:51

718 GT4 is does it go across the road

play22:56

like a Lotus no not quite does it steer

play22:59

with the Beauty and the Precision of an

play23:01

old GT3 no not quite does it have the

play23:05

manic engine of one of those either no

play23:09

not quite but trust me this has more

play23:14

than enough in every Department to

play23:17

satisfy I think even the most Discerning

play23:20

of petrol

play23:22

heads glad I finally got to drive it so

play23:25

I want to say a big thank you to Jim for

play23:27

bringing it out and as ever to you for
