play00:02

sometimes announcements for games are

play00:03

just too good to be true and they turn

play00:05

out to be well scams and we've all been

play00:08

burned so much that frankly it's easy to

play00:10

believe anything that looks really good

play00:13

is a scam but it's not always the case

play00:15

sometimes they end up being awesome

play00:17

games hi folks this Falcon and today on

play00:19

game ranks 10 games everyone thought

play00:21

worse games but turned out to be great

play00:24

starting off with number 10 it's black

play00:25

myth Wukong there are so many trailers

play00:27

that come out these days that are too

play00:29

good to be true I mean look at the day

play00:31

before those trailers were extremely

play00:33

impressive but uh you all know how that

play00:35

game actually turned out to be that one

play00:38

was a sandwich if I've ever t uh

play00:41

seen one not tasted one seen one in many

play00:45

ways black myth looked like something

play00:46

similar a flashy trailer from a studio

play00:48

most people have never heard of uh these

play00:50

guys started out as just a small team of

play00:52

about seven before ramping up production

play00:54

after that first pre-alpha trailer if it

play00:56

wasn't a scam these guys were just

play00:58

biting off way more than they could chew

play00:59

there was no way this was going to be

play01:01

anywhere close to what they were showing

play01:02

in those trailers right I mean it had to

play01:05

be at least kind of a scam good things

play01:07

like this don't just happen there's just

play01:09

no way not even big billion dollar

play01:12

companies were making games that look

play01:13

this good something had to be off here

play01:16

folks online were skeptical at first and

play01:18

after the day before crashed and burned

play01:19

the cynicism surrounding the game only

play01:21

got worse at least in certain corners of

play01:24

the internet when it became obvious that

play01:25

the game was at least coming out a lot

play01:27

of started to speculate based on

play01:29

previous the final product was going to

play01:31

be a little more than a Boss Rush and

play01:33

maybe more of a tech demo than an actual

play01:35

complete game I mean the devs managed to

play01:37

prove all the Skeptics wrong Blackmouth

play01:39

was a real game and it's huge and I do

play01:41

want to say that it was one of the games

play01:43

that I thought was going to turn out to

play01:44

be a good one a real one and it

play01:57

was sometimes game devs can pretty much

play01:59

come out nowhere with an amazing game

play02:01

it's rare but it

play02:11

happens at number nine is po world even

play02:14

more than Wukong the premise of Po World

play02:17

sounds like a big old scam I mean it's

play02:19

an open world survival game with guns

play02:22

and Pokemon it's everything uh you like

play02:24

all jammed together into one game that

play02:26

is very often the premise of a scam game

play02:30

and look at the first trailer looks like

play02:31

a scam it looks fake looks like the sort

play02:33

of thing a guy would make using CGI to

play02:35

trick non- Gamers into investing into

play02:37

his flyby night Kickstarter but pal

play02:39

world had at least two things going for

play02:41

it for one these guys have made a game

play02:43

before another key thing is that there

play02:45

was no Kickstarter they just made the

play02:47

game it's early access which is

play02:49

sometimes a red flag but the game they

play02:51

released was surprisingly polished and

play02:53

mostly featur complete for an early

play02:55

access

play02:57

game yeah

play03:05

that didn't stop some people from

play03:07

claiming the game was a scam though they

play03:08

claimed that the game stole assets from

play03:10

the Pokemon developer game freak well

play03:13

the Pokemon company said they

play03:14

investigate and nothing came of it most

play03:16

of the anger surrounding the game uh

play03:18

from Pokemon fans has died down but

play03:21

before and around release man some

play03:23

people were mad as hell about palor

play03:25

between the developers who by their own

play03:27

admission have no idea what they were

play03:28

doing and were in way over their heads

play03:31

and the Absurd premise of the game I can

play03:32

see why people assumed it was you know a

play03:35

scam but it wasn't uh through some

play03:38

miracle it came through and ended up

play03:39

being much better than it had any right

play03:41

to

play03:50

be at number eight is Kingdom Come

play03:53

Deliverance this is the first but far

play03:56

from the last Kickstarter game that will

play03:57

show up on this list unlike previous

play03:59

games where the extent of the scam was

play04:01

just that the game might not actually

play04:03

come out this game had the distinct

play04:05

possibility people who backed it would

play04:07

get nothing back from their investment

play04:08

kickstarters are risky by Nature you

play04:11

basically donate money to someone in the

play04:13

hopes that they return the favor once

play04:15

that money is back in their hands that's

play04:17

it if they don't deliver the goods your

play04:19

so out of luck by the time Kingdom

play04:22

Come announced their Kickstarter many

play04:24

high-profile failures had eroded

play04:26

consumer confidence in the platform and

play04:28

basically any high-profile file game

play04:30

like this was going to have people

play04:31

assume it's a scam to the skeptic's

play04:33

credit there was reason for concern I

play04:35

mean it was a firsttime team making a

play04:36

very ambitious open world medieval

play04:38

simulation their Kickstarter was honest

play04:41

about the difficulty of the project they

play04:42

were working on and the devs were

play04:44

actually made up of veterans of the

play04:45

industry who would work together on

play04:47

other projects like Mafia 2 but there

play04:49

are plenty of examples of misleading

play04:51

information on Kickstarter pages so

play04:53

there's no way to know if anything they

play04:55

were saying was actually true and uh the

play04:58

original release plans got potential

play05:00

backers guards up there was going to be

play05:01

this episodic multiple act release

play05:03

structure which didn't seem realistic

play05:05

the final game didn't end up being quite

play05:07

as big as they had originally promised

play05:09

and it was pretty buggy when it first

play05:11

came out but overall they managed to

play05:12

fulfill their promises from the

play05:13

kickstarter and made a pretty damn

play05:15

impressive

play05:20

game now you're getting

play05:23

it

play05:24

nice

play05:26

good at number seven was cuphead another

play05:29

one of those types of games that looks

play05:31

so ambitious in the trailer that it just

play05:32

can't come out there are countless

play05:34

examples of this sort of thing in the

play05:36

past radio the Universe shut up in Jam

play05:38

gayen 2 or heart forth Alicia the list

play05:41

goes on cuphead looked like the type of

play05:43

game that was faded to be vaporware just

play05:46

another exciting Indie that was never

play05:47

going to come out or it would come out

play05:49

and be nothing like the game they

play05:51

initially promised that's one we've seen

play05:53

time and time again discussion around

play05:55

the game was generally positive around

play05:57

the initial announcement but there were

play05:58

definitely people thinking this was

play05:59

never going to see the light of day well

play06:01

they did prove it was real by previewing

play06:03

the pre-release build and the

play06:05

overwhelming response was disappointment

play06:07

in the game's original short length

play06:09

Impressions were good otherwise but they

play06:11

knew they were going to have to make the

play06:12

game bigger which was going to take time

play06:14

and

play06:22

money this kind of ramping up in game

play06:25

development can lead to disaster a lot

play06:27

of Indie developers Buckle under that

play06:29

sort of pressure uh even major Outlets

play06:31

were skeptical about the game at that

play06:33

time wired put the game in its 2016

play06:35

vapeware list cuphead did managed to

play06:38

prove the doubters wrong though it's one

play06:39

of the landmark indie games of the last

play06:41

decade sold more than a million copies

play06:43

in its first two weeks there really

play06:45

wasn't anything to worry about but uh

play06:46

again big ambition small team it scares

play06:49

people

play06:52

[Laughter]

play06:56

[Music]

play06:59

number six is Auden Chronicles 100

play07:01

Heroes if there's one thing we've come

play07:03

to learn it's that a celebrated Japanese

play07:05

game developer attaches their name to a

play07:07

Kickstarter project uh don't don't put

play07:09

money in it if they do that if they do

play07:11

that just start running project Phoenix

play07:13

Mighty number n Red Ash shenmu 3 some of

play07:16

these things put out actual games but

play07:18

anything trying to make a spiritual

play07:20

successor to some classic jrpg or

play07:22

something it's going to fail the pull a

play07:23

project Phoenix and take all your money

play07:25

string you along for years and disappear

play07:26

into the night jrpg products made by

play07:28

veterans are just cursed they're either

play07:31

scams or cursed or both either way they

play07:33

never work minus the random outlier like

play07:36

bloodstained enter iodin Chronicles uh

play07:39

this game was sold as a spiritual

play07:41

successor to the saden series and the

play07:43

project was led by yoshitaka marama the

play07:47

creator of that series the the the suen

play07:50

guy it made a shocking amount of money

play07:52

it was the third highest video game

play07:54

Kickstarter of all time just below

play07:55

shenmu 3 in bloodstain but many fans

play07:57

were still extremely skeptical of the

play07:59

game would ever come out making jrpgs is

play08:02

hard these are huge games it doesn't

play08:04

matter whether they're 2D or 3D or

play08:06

whatever they just have tons of unique

play08:08

assets uh and if you're doing voice

play08:10

acting that's a huge undertaking it's

play08:12

pretty standard to do voice acting

play08:14

nowadays too um and this wasn't just

play08:16

going to be a basic jrpg it was

play08:18

following s in which it has multiple

play08:20

combat systems an entire base management

play08:23

aspect and more than 100 Heroes to

play08:25

recruit it was originally going to come

play08:26

out in 2022 but it got delayed due to co

play08:29

and for a while things looked really

play08:30

touch and go with the game The Game's

play08:32

director tragically passed before the

play08:34

game came out but they were able to

play08:36

finish it in 2024 and mostly to a

play08:38

positive response that the game came out

play08:40

at all as a minor miracle so it's kind

play08:43

of amazing it's complete it's a massive

play08:45

complex game with a lot going on and

play08:47

that's exactly what fans of the old

play08:49

sting games

play08:53

want I order a retreat

play09:00

at number five is vampire survivors this

play09:03

exploded in popularity out of nowhere

play09:05

and it looks like a phone game it's got

play09:06

to be a scam right it's so cheap it's

play09:08

got to be predatory somehow right where

play09:11

where's the loot boxes where's the real

play09:12

money currencies where's the gambling

play09:14

well there's none vampire survivors is

play09:16

exactly what it is nothing more nothing

play09:19

less the developer's experience in the

play09:21

gambling industry is actually used for

play09:22

good rather than evil here it's got all

play09:24

of the dopamine activating flashing

play09:26

lights and sounds to keep you hopelessly

play09:28

addicted without trying to get anything

play09:30

at all from you it's all just in service

play09:33

of a fun game

play09:35

play09:59

there were some grumblers about certain

play10:02

Sprites that the game used which are

play10:04

very similar to certain Castlevania

play10:05

Sprites but as the developer made clear

play10:08

they purchased a very popular asset pack

play10:10

without realizing how close some of the

play10:11

Sprites were it's a small mistake

play10:14

they're not ripping Castlevania off the

play10:16

game isn't even remotely similar so eh

play10:31

[Music]

play10:40

at number four is the System Shock

play10:42

remake the classic emmo of the scam

play10:44

kickstarters to put a flashy trailer get

play10:46

a whole bunch of money from gullible

play10:47

backers then procrastinate like all life

play10:49

depended on it make excuses say your dog

play10:52

at your homework who cares all that

play10:53

matters is that you have plausible

play10:55

deniability by the time the accusations

play10:57

of fraud start getting thrown around but

play10:59

but then hopefully you're gone you're

play11:00

you're You're gone you you've left

play11:02

you've disappeared that's how to scam at

play11:05

least that's what it looks like they do

play11:07

maybe they do something much more

play11:08

complex and clever uh it doesn't seem

play11:11

like it though for a few years though it

play11:13

was really looking like the System Shock

play11:14

remake was never happening it took so

play11:16

long with so many complete resets and

play11:18

development that I wouldn't blame anyone

play11:20

for thinking this was some long con you

play11:22

can only start over from scratch so many

play11:24

times before you start to look like the

play11:25

boy who cried bad engine that's only

play11:27

scratching the surface of the game's

play11:29

trouble development too at first it was

play11:31

going to be a very accurate remake then

play11:32

it was going to be a complete overhaul

play11:34

then it was going to be a modern uh

play11:35

thing then an old school thing

play11:37

eventually they decided on a kind of

play11:39

hybrid style that ended up working

play11:40

really well the game was stuck in

play11:42

development H for around 7 years but the

play11:44

completed game was an excellent remake

play11:46

SL remaster it modernized the game in a

play11:49

few smart ways with a mind on keeping

play11:51

everything that made the game unique

play11:53

intact um the game was very touch andgo

play11:55

during development it could have been a

play11:57

mess and I wouldn't blame anyone for

play11:58

starting to think the the whole project

play11:59

was a scam but they managed to reach the

play12:01

light at the end of the tunnel and

play12:02

release a game that was so much better

play12:04

than most of us assumed it would

play12:19

be I will kill what I

play12:25

find and number three is the Final

play12:28

Fantasy 7 remake no one thought this was

play12:30

going to be a literal scam more like it

play12:32

was going to be Vapor wear Beyond Good

play12:34

and Evil too at at worst it could have

play12:36

been one of those situations where

play12:37

Square Enix was purposely misleading

play12:39

investors keeping stock prices High by

play12:42

promising a Final Fantasy 7 remake that

play12:44

they never had any intention to making

play12:46

teasers for this thing go all the way

play12:47

back to 2005 like it was something

play12:49

people were speculating about for years

play12:51

and years it was like Kingdom Hearts 3

play12:53

but worse just this endlessly teased

play12:56

thing that seemed like it was never

play12:57

going to happen even after getting fully

play12:59

announced in 2015 skepticism was skyh

play13:01

high and you can't really blame fans for

play13:03

assuming the worst at that point Square

play13:05

wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders

play13:07

back then the strange and inconsistent

play13:09

Final Fantasy 13 series the mess that

play13:11

was the original launch of 14 the half

play13:13

finished mess that was 15 the series

play13:15

track record wasn't looking so good back

play13:17

then and it seemed like a distinct

play13:19

possibility the Remake would never see

play13:20

the light of day barely any information

play13:23

about that game came out between 2015

play13:25

and 2019 and the stuff they did reveal

play13:27

mostly came off as fake they were going

play13:29

to split the game into three parts uh

play13:32

yeah okay sure sounds uh very

play13:35

episodically Kickstarter and it's

play13:38

basically nobody believed it was going

play13:39

to happen until it did and even holding

play13:41

a physical copy of the game didn't seem

play13:43

real at the time it happened it's got

play13:45

the best battle system the series has

play13:47

seen in Gears and it's visually stunning

play13:49

now are they actually going to finish

play13:50

the trilogy who knows ask me again in

play13:52

20127 or whenever the final part is

play13:54

supposed to come out but uh I mean we

play13:56

got two of the three parts at this point

play13:58

so

play14:00

not bad not

play14:01

[Music]

play14:11

bad suck on

play14:17

this suck on

play14:21

this

play14:23

still now for the real

play14:33

you're up do your job m shut up the move

play14:37

over get ready see

play14:44

[Music]

play14:46

you how you like

play14:50

that I could have done that on my own

play14:53

sure you could and number two is omori

play14:56

the success of games like undertale led

play14:58

to a flood of minim Min IST Indie RPGs

play15:00

that just I mean you couldn't go on

play15:02

Kickstarter without seeing one one of

play15:04

the most interesting was amori it looked

play15:05

good but soon after the kickstarter

play15:07

ended the developer stopped

play15:08

communicating they'd pop back in

play15:10

occasionally to give a status update but

play15:12

it was the kind of thing that could

play15:13

easily be viewed as them trying to play

play15:14

K backers this went on for 6 years far

play15:17

longer than the initial Kickstarter

play15:18

estimates so most backers assume the

play15:20

project was dead either the dev ran out

play15:22

of money or they're just stringing the

play15:23

supporters along whatever uh didn't look

play15:25

good for the game I imagine everybody uh

play15:27

was pretty surprised when the game

play15:28

released least Christmas 2020 to rave

play15:30

reviews it ended up being the best in

play15:32

the new wave of Indie RPGs or at least

play15:35

one of the best depends on your

play15:37

perspective I don't blame Bankers for

play15:39

starting to think this was a kind of

play15:40

scam they were really long droughts in

play15:42

communication but sometimes you just got

play15:43

to let a guy cook

play15:46

[Music]

play15:51

[Applause]

play15:55

[Music]

play16:16

and finally at number one Kingdom of

play16:19

Amer Reckoning it's less that the game

play16:21

itself was considered a scam and more

play16:23

its reputation was damaged by

play16:24

associations with the sketchy dealings

play16:26

of its publishing partner 38 Studios the

play16:29

general narrative around 38 Studios and

play16:32

its founder Kurt Schilling is that they

play16:34

defrauded the state of Rhode Island out

play16:36

of a 75 million loan and nearly

play16:38

bankrupted the state and that negative

play16:41

attention often gets directed onto the

play16:43

game which isn't fair 38 Studios was

play16:45

definitely in over its head they had no

play16:47

idea what they were doing and honestly

play16:48

Rhode Island clearly did not either but

play16:51

the game this game specifically not the

play16:53

MMO they were planning on at the time

play16:56

was mostly insulated from that 38

play16:58

Studios didn't make Kingdom of Amer big

play17:01

huge games did and these guys had a

play17:02

proven track record of quality they made

play17:04

Rise of Nations one of the best RTS of

play17:07

all time and the actual game separate

play17:09

from all controversy is pretty damn

play17:11

solid it's got a fun real-time combat

play17:13

system a detailed and dense World sure

play17:16

it seems like playing a more active MMO

play17:18

a lot of the time but in this game's

play17:20

case it it works

play17:42

the game actually sold pretty well too

play17:43

it surpassed a million copies but 38

play17:45

Studios was bleeding money to make it on

play17:48

expensive real estate and big paychecks

play17:50

so the only thing they were going to do

play17:52

to recoup development costs was if the

play17:54

game sold 3 million copies minimum that

play17:57

that wasn't going to happen they never

play17:58

have a chance to hell of that and

play18:00

because of that it killed big huge games

play18:02

who were actually pretty talented

play18:03

developers the story around the game

play18:05

tends to overshadow everything else but

play18:07

it's a pretty darn good game actually

play18:08

it's pretty great if you can get past

play18:10

the bizarre Kurt Shilling Association

play18:12

and honestly I can I'm fine with it I

play18:14

don't care

play18:18

[Music]

play18:33

[Applause]
