Transcripts
Hey, people, you probably already heard about my new book 50 Amazing Places in Bulgaria
but today comes another surprise related to it.
For the first time in two years, dear friends
there will finally be a city-by-city presentation and a meeting with me.
I invite all of you to meet me in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas.
The dates, places, and times you see written next to me.
The meeting is completely free. Free entrance, as they say.
We'll take pictures and talk, I'll sign your books, and if you want to prepare
you can order your new one right now from the link below in the description.
Thank you so much for your support.
Let's get started with the episode because I know you can't wait.
Albania is probably the most neglected Balkan country
and although it is close to Bulgaria we don't know much about it.
You are probably familiar with the phrase “It warms up like an Albanian rheotan”
but let's break the prejudice and see what it hides.
Before that though, give one comment below on which country should be next for 50 Amazing Facts.
Let's see which one gets the most votes.
And now are you ready for your head to go boom?
Nothing to do with Balkan languages, bro.
50 Amazing Facts about Albania after which you will warm up quickly.
To the world, this country is known as the republic of Albania
but to the Albanians themselves, it is better known as the Republic of Shkiparisa or Shkiparia for short.
It translates as the land of eagles and that's why it has a double-headed eagle on its flag.
The total area of Albania is about 29 thousand square kilometers.
And the population in recent years has melted to 2.8 million people.
I say melting because more Albanians live outside Albania, which is a worldwide phenomenon.
It is estimated that 3 million of their compatriots have fled the world.
The way I see it, we may soon catch up with them.
The capital Tirana is the largest city in Albania with a population of about 550 thousand people.
Its name actually comes from the Greek “tyros” meaning dairy products.
It is believed that in the past there was a center for their production.
Tirana is considered one of the greenest capitals of Europe and does not suffer from overdevelopment
like most major cities in post-socialist countries such as Sofia for example.
Almost the entire center of their capital was designed by Italians in the 1930s.
Albania's coastline is 362 km and only slightly larger than ours which is 354.
They are starting to develop their seaside resorts quite seriously
and tour operators are preparing it for the next Bulgaria.
70% of Albania is covered by mountains known as the Albanian Alps.
Similar to those in central Europe.
Because of the inhospitality of the massif in its Albanian part
the mountain is also known as the cursed mountain.
The highest peak in Albania is a large Korab (ship in Bulgarian).
It probably sounds familiar to you and it is.
We said it in the facts about Macedonia
and this peak is divided between the Macedonians on one side and the Albanians on the other.
Its height is 2,764 meters which ranks it fourth on the Balkan Peninsula
after our Musala in Rila, the Greek Mytikas in Olympus, and again our Vihren in Pirin.
Prespa Lake is the strangest lake in the Balkans.
It is shared between three whole countries: Albania, Greece, and Northern Macedonia.
By the way, a whole third of the famous Macedonian Lake Ohrid is actually Albanian.
Albania is a unitary parliamentary republic headed by a president
who, however, is elected by the parliament and not by the people
and incidentally their parliament is called the Kuvendi.
The official currency of Albania is called Lek and one lek is equal to 0.017 BGN, which is less than 0,02 BGN.
The lek is divided into 100 units which are called kindarki.
This word literally translates as 100.
If you want to save a lek or a lev
you can use the promo codes for ozone.bg discount CLASH11 and for Ardes.bg THECLASHERS.
Entering them every time helps the channel a lot for which I thank you.
I don't know how the Albanians will get along with the northern Macedonians
about Alexander the Great because they also consider him their hero.
The Albanians abbreviate the name Aleksandr to Lek or lekar
and that is actually where even the name of their currency comes from.
They have him depicted on their coins.
Albania is a Muslim country as 59% profess Islam
17% are Christian, 9% are atheist, and 15% refuse to name their religion.
This is data from their latest census.
Strangely enough, another country in the world used to be called Albania
and its inhabitants were Albanians.
It is now extinct but was located on the territory of today's Caucasus
between Azerbaijan and Daghestan.
It arose in the first century.
Like the northern Macedonians, the Albanians are considered descendants of very, very ancient people.
This time, however, of the Illyrians.
According to some scholars, the Albanians bear the name of the Illyrian Albani tribe.
Like Bulgaria, Albania was also under Ottoman rule and its population was forcibly Islamized.
It was liberated in 1912 during the Balkan War.
Albania then became a constitutional monarchy
but its independence lasted too little because the First World War came in 1914.
It was occupied first by Serbia, and Greece
then by France, and finally by Austro-Hungary, and so on until 1920.
They just deal with the Serbs and Albania starts to develop and again
the second world war comes and this time the country is occupied by Italy.
Right, for a change.
However, intense resistance begins beginning with the communist party led by Enver Hoxha.
Later he led the country and turned it into a rather unprosperous totalitarian state.
He stayed at the helm of power until his death in 1985.
Incidentally, after Stalin died, Enver Hoxha denounced Khrushchev's reforms
and departed from the orbit of the USSR in favor of China, however.
The country then became more and more isolated
and maintained minimal contact with the rest of the world.
Even with the socialist republics.
It is turning into a sort of North Korea of the Balkans.
In 1991 the communist regime finally fell and the country opened up to the world
after 45 years of total isolation.
Then international organizations were allowed into Albania to investigate the situation
and it automatically became the poorest country in Europe.
In 1991, there were only 3 000 cars in Albania
that were owned only by senior party members and army officers.
Today almost every family has its own car and the most preferred brand there is Mercedes.
You must have watched Top Gear.
Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes.
On April first, 2009, Albania became a member of NATO.
In the same year, it applied for membership in the European Union
but as it is put in the same group as Northern Macedonia
and they have historical problems with each other negotiations are complicated.
The Balkan peninsula is not known as an oil-rich place, but Albania belies this stereotype.
The country has oil reserves, which some say are the richest in Europe.
As well as coal and natural gas but all deposits are poorly developed.
In Albania, there is still a blood revenge for an insult inflicted by one family on another.
In order not to die in a vendetta, many Albanians
including children, are forced to live in isolation and in fear.
Blood revenge has a name among Albanians and it is Canun.
There are many minorities in Albania, including Bulgarian.
Even in two villages near the border with Macedonia, they have defined themselves
as Bulgarians and Macedonians but with the special proviso that there is no difference between the two.
That brings us to the middle of the video, and if you've liked everything so far give it a thumbs up.
And if you want, you can press the thanks button.
But let's continue with the more interesting facts.
People with Bulgarian roots in Albania are about 50 thousand
and live mainly on the shores of Lake Ohrid.
There they are not subjected to state pressure as is the case in northern Macedonia
and have registered several organizations.
Did you know that Mother Teresa actually has Albanian roots
but was born in Skopje under the name of Anesa Gonja Boyadiu?
I don't know if I'm good with accents.
She is the only representative of her ethnicity to win a Nobel Prize.
In some parts of Albania, just like in Bulgaria
nodding your head means “no” and turning it sideways means “yes”.
It is believed that this custom comes from the distant past when there were more Bulgarians there.
In Albania, they have their own McDonald's or national fast food chain
similar to the American one but with the name Kolonat.
Even until recently their logo strongly resembled that of McDonald's but they had to change it.
By the way, there is not and never has been a McDonald's in Albania
making it one of the few European countries where the American chain has not set foot.
The largest preserved amphitheater on the Balkan Peninsula is in Albania near the town of Duras
which by the way was ours during the first Bulgarian state and is known as Drach.
There are 173,000 bunkers in Albania built during communism
because of the paranoia of Enver Hoxha that his country would be invaded by the evil capitalist west.
In 1967, the same Enver Hoxha declared Albania
the first fully atheist country in the world and officially banned all religions by law.
The penalties for offenders caught in churches or mosques were between 3 and 10 years in prison.
Today, Albania is one of the few Muslim countries in Europe
alongside Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
Albania produces a good deal of its electricity from water power plants.
but in recent years a drought has set in and the country is now reorienting itself.
The growth in tourists to Albania in recent years alone is 740%
despite its undoubted success in attracting holidaymakers
there is only one international airport in Albania
located next to Tirana and named after Mother Teresa.
By the way, no wonder it attracts so many tourists.
Have a look at the Albanian Riviera near me.
Many of the beaches are still untouched and not covered in concrete, and by the way
the prices there are much more reasonable than some other riviera around Europe.
In Albania, the main meal is at noon.
Their dinners are quite light as Albanians mainly eat vegetables and pure meat.
This by the way makes them the least obese nation in Europe.
One of the most developed sports in Albania is weightlifting.
The country has had a lot of success in international competitions
but unfortunately still has no Olympic medal.
Albanians have a tradition of a formal evening walk
where they burn some calories and naturally hang out or share a gossip or two with the neighbors.
It is called Ksiro. I don't know if I'm saying it right.
Even some streets are closed to cars so people can walk in peace.

And you can get my mystery-filled books from the link in the description below. Thank you.
If you happen to travel to Albania get ready to see an awful lot of scarecrows
and in the most unusual places like cities for example.
Albanians hold the belief that these scarecrows protect them from the envy of their neighbors.
But lately, people have started to replace them with teddy bears.
Albanians are terribly undisciplined drivers
and everyone there follows their own individual made-up rules.
So be especially careful if you have to drive around Albania.
In 1995 a special law was passed in Albania
according to which all citizens are obliged to pay a tax for traffic lights.
However, this caused protests in many places, including Skodra
which is a medieval town with very narrow streets and where there is not even one traffic light.
After realizing that they had made a big blunder the authorities repealed the law.
The national drink of Albania is raki, which is brandy, but it is much stronger than ours.
It goes up to 60-70 degrees and some people even drink the pre-product of it.
Albanians as well as northern Macedonians
learn that in the Middle Ages they were under Bulgarian rule.
However, Albania has no bad attitude towards Bulgaria at the expense of the North Macedonians.
The second most spoken language after Albanian is not English as you probably assume
but Italian and in fact trade with the Apennines is the largest.
Intercity buses and coaches in Albania do not leave on schedule, but only when they are full.
So you can seriously wait if you sit first.
In Albania, there is still the so-called gender abortion which is even legal.
Meaning if you really want a boy but the baby turns out to be a girl
you can force your wife to abort and try again.
Despite the progress in recent years
Albania is still considered one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Alongside ours.
There it's quite normal to pay a tip to the policeman to keep him from writing you a ticket.
A lot of people think that Albania is some kind of gangster state
but that mainly comes from the immigrants in Western Europe
who are involved in drugs and prostitution.
Albania actually turns out to be one of the safest countries to travel to.
If you liked the video give it a thumbs up. If you didn't, press that button next to it, it is up to you.
